I was chatting with a very exhausted House Andrews last week, after they finished signing the thousands of special editions of Iron and Magic and Blood Heir (which will be shipping in March from Arcane Society).

And because I am of the Horde, as I was looking at these really beautiful books, I couldn’t help but think about how much I wish Hidden Legacy would get the same special edition treatment.

Imagine, the hardcoverage! The box-settiness of it all, everything the same size! The ART! Grandma Frida’s motor pool vignettes! Ferrets!

So, that’s my question for the you for today: who would you like to illustrate a collector edition of Hidden Legacy? How do you imagine it? Do you have a favorite current artist who would match the style of the books?

I know it’s not real, and wishes, fishes, horses and all that. But maybe if we Horde it into the universe…?

  1. Honestly I just love Luisa Preissler so probably her? I have her prints framed on my library walls at the moment. Just love her style. Somehow it’s like she managed to pull all the IA characters out of my head

  2. Mod R I am imagining House Andrews inserted their poor hands and wrists into cold plunge baths to help with all the inflammation from signing all those books and you are subtlety planning even more work? You are indeed a member of the Horde.

  8. For shame Mod R, such diabolical scheming you’re doing to HA. I can see you rubbing your hands together to get the rest of the Horde onboard with the scheming. I agree, you are definitely one of the Horde. 😀

    Luisa Preissler’s art is stunning! She captured the Baylor sisters and others perfectly. It would be interesting to see renderings of Rogan, Augustine, and Cornelius. 🙂

  9. I haven’t got a favorite artist, though Luisa Preissler is wonderful.

    However, I’d *love* a special edition with extra art (Yay art!) by any of the great artists we see on the blog.

    I have to admit that I am part of the reason for HA having sore hands. I’d apologize but “Sorry, not sorry”. I am looking forward to the Arcane Society book box. (Again, yay art – and extras!) Thank you for pointing out it could be acquired without a subscription.

    Thank you, HA for your sacrifice and enduring the pain of sore hands, so we could have lovely books to read and hoard.

    I love the Louisa Preissler art above. If she illustrated the books, I’d be more than happy.

    When it comes to books, or other goodies from House Andrew, we are the epitome of MissV from Willy Wonka “I want it Now!” lol
    Seriously, you know we want it all-even stuff we haven’t thought of yet- ASAP!
    I enjoy all the artists that I’ve seen on the blog. I suppose I like consistency, so L Pressler for hidden legacies, whoever did the picture of Oro with donuts and the space chicken for innkeeper…
    All the stuff, all the stories, all the time 🙂

  23. I would love a special edition with art, gilded or sprayed edges, smyth sewn, quality paper and endpages, with ribbon and clothbound/leatherbound! All the pretties to do such a fantastic series justice please. The special edition Innkeepers from Sub Press have spoiled me! alas I don’t know any illustrators though. Beth Gilbert is a digital one. I love Omar Rayyan but he’s not really this vibe. Arantza Sestayo does amazing artwork.

  25. I would love special hardback editions of the Hidden Legacy books! Not really sure about the artist, but I love the soft-cover hardback books with designs in gold or silver foil and then illustrations on the inside.

  26. In love with Luisa Pressler’s art, so there’s that. But I’m sure there are other amazing artists I would also love… I would buy the heck out of magical Hidden Legacy stuff!

  27. I’m canada, so I don’t know if that applicable to me but I was waiting for the new edition to buy hidden legacy. If there was extra art,I will probably buy the special edition if I can, but I want all the books in the serie so maybe a special edition paperback so is not to pricey

  28. I am not very familiar with different artists but have loved all the design choices. So just saying I fully support the special edition continuation and happy to add to my book horde!

  33. I think i must be the only one who bypasses all the workings outside of the original books. I enjoy the words. I enjoy the stories and my imagination fills the gaps in. x

  38. I did a gasp because OMG that would be incredible 😍 I just cleared shelf space over the weekend for the upcoming Arcane editions and the thought of Hidden Legacy with the SE treatment would be amazing.

    No artist suggestions but to happy to help Horde it into the universe ☺️🙏🙏

  39. Yeees! Exited to get my copy and so greateful that Arcane Society was able to add my country to the shipping possibilities. Soooo, a thousand yes for any further collector editions, I would love to have both Hidden Legacy and Kate Daniels in my library.

  40. Oh, man. Regardless of who the artist would be, I’d break the sound barrier with how fast I would click buy! Luisa Preissler is amazing (I love the art she’s already made for the Hidden Legacy universe) but since we’re speaking of wishes and fishes, I think Dan Dos Santos would also do an amazing job. (He does the cover art for the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. Here’s his portfolio: https://www.dandossantos.com/gallery) That being said, I have no idea if he’d have the availability for a project like this or what he would charge.

    • I am looking at Luisa Preissler’s calendar on my wall at work right now. (Curran – Feb 2022 – yum!) Luisa is one of my favorites! Doris is very talented, and Dos Santos – love the Brigg’s and Saintcrow covers! I also like Chris McGrath’s work. Difficult to choose!

  43. I would absolutely buy hardcover special editions of Hidden Legacy which is my #1 all-time favorite series (Innkeeper, the Kate universe, & Kinsmen are all tied for #1A, lol). I’m enamored with Luisa Preissler’s artwork and have purchased her Hidden Legacy, Blood Heir, and Kinsmen illustrations for my home library. I’d be all over hardcover special editions for any/all IA series and am sure whatever artist you ultimately get would be amazing!

  44. I have the Luisa Preissler prints, including the Baylor sisters, framed in my study. Love her work. I’ll also put in a word for my favorite Tolkien artist whose work is hauntingly lovely. I believe she is Russian and works on commission-I’ve never seen a cover by her.   45. I love Luisa Presslee, but I adore Doris Mantair even more. I would buy it all, but I vote for Doris.

  46. Also, if wishes were fishes (particularly regarding books from House Andrews – or even snippets, or that is was FRIDAY already 🤣😭🤣) I’d have a LOT of fishes. Enough that no one would ever need fish again. LOL.

    I only have digital copies of HL so I would love a fully matched set of ✨pretty✨ books! Just let us know before the new cover versions are out so there’s no buyer’s remorse… Who am I kidding, I could never regret getting any HA books 😁
    The main reason I didn’t go in on the Arcane Society set is that they are not completed sets/series yet.

  49. Well- to be clear I am not into collector additions so I dunno how much my opinion matters. BUT if I could have a scene illustrated I would want two:
    The entire family around the dinner table eating delicious-ness. They are so close knit and they have several meals together throughout the book that I kinda want that.
    I would also love to see the scene when Nevada told Conner about her pregnancy. I can picture a shocked Rogan with shattered glass in the background.

In terms of artists my First pick would be Luisa Preissler as love what’s she’s done so far for these characters & Kate Daniels world. 2nd choice Dan Dos Santos if he would even be available & affordable. 3rd choice Carissa Susilo who did the gorgeous cover art for the Grace Draven covers for Arcane society editions.

  51. I am a huge, huge Luisa Preissler fan – incredible artwork, incredibly kind individual. I would snatch up a hidden legacy box with her artwork in a second. I also think she does particularly well with urban fantasy aesthetics that are hard to get right.

  52. I love the above artwork too, but I guess she may not be available. I find Mathia Arkoniel fantasy artwork captivating. I ran across her fan artwork for Chronicles of Elantra years ago and loved the detail in her work. I like they included their character designs and funny doogles. Their use of color and lighting are phenomenal. I like a more muted color palette.Good Luck!

  55. I love Luisa Preissler! I would be so excited to have special editions of HL. My issue is the cost of postage to Australia 🙁 especially from the States.

    I hope that this interval of mindless physical effort was the mental rest y’all needed to get your creative juices flowing for the next project on the list (that we know nothing about until you announce you’ve finished)… or at least a good start on recharging.

    My overall favorite Andrews series.

  59. I would suggest to hear if Doris Mantair (Innkeeper illustator) was available again!
    Other cover illustrators I follow have a more webcomic/graphic novel style…

    But also here to say, I will take any type of collectors edition of HL. Please take my money!

  62. Hidden Legacy special edition – yes, please!! Any way to have it include both trilogies plus Diamond Fire? Hahaha. The Horde wants it all!

    I wish I had artist recommendations for you, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head besides Luisa Preissler and you’re already well aware of her. 🙂

  64. In my 5 years of working in digital comics, I saw a lot of great art though since I was working with the French language bandes-dessinées content. Just a note, I’m not an artist or comic book author myself, I worked for a digital comics distributor which has since folded and I had to stare at comic book pdfs all day long as part of my job.

    Out of the hundreds (thousands?) French graphic novels I looked at, the Magda Ikklepotts graphic novel art stayed with me, so much I ended up buying the print editions (only available in France). The artist from those titles is named Krystel, I dunno her full name but here is her personal website (the Magda character is on the main page): https://krystelart.weebly.com/ She came to mind because Magda’s character is a witch and does magic and I won’t go into more details because the graphic novels got very complicated.

    But Krystel’s art is so beautiful and I know she’d do beautiful work for anything magic related so she gets my vote!

    Also, if there anyway to get a print of some of the innkeeper artwork? I really want an Innkeeper print for my wall.

  66. I can’t even tell you how much I would dish out for a box set of the hidden legacy series. I would use my CREDIT CARD just to make sure it was mine.

  68. Since I am lucky to own some of Luisa Preisslers Prints&Calendars I would love to have her create the wishful-yet to be manifested-potenial HL Edition.
    I like your other artists, Doris Mantair and Isabeau Backhaus too. Nevertheless Luisas versions of the Baylors are HA chsracters come to life. Kate, Julie and Kinsmen too.

  69. My time has come…I follow a million artists online and am always happy to spread the love for art. And it goes without saying I am all for an illustrated edition of anything! I really wish more adult books had illustrations.

    Rovina Cai does awesome textured, more monochromatic stuff. I think it would suit a more detectivey vibe? But honestly I’m thinking her work is probably better suited for what we’ve seen of Maggie.

    I also love Charlie Bowaters work! And she’s done fantasy type book covers before.

    Also Thomas Chamberlain-Keen! They have done a wide range of styles, from a more anime style, to creature design to dark and gritty bloodborne concept. I love how dynamic their characters are posed sometimes.

    Also also anninosart on IG! Their stuff is fun and the characters feel like they have such personality! They posted an illustration of an OC with a cloud jacket and a baseball bat that very much makes me think of hidden legacy vibes. (I linked it under the my website option)

    I’ll just list one more. Evyn Fong! Her work is so so good! She does art for MTG so obv lots of magic/sorcery and such!

    Is there, or can there be at some point in the future (the magic point when IA isn’t busy, yes I know it’ll never come), a story about the origins of the bond between Tomato and Prysen Ol? Pretty please? 🤗

  74. I am a digital artist and I would like to sign up, I am an unknown because I really do not have the discipline to grow a following online but I would like to make official art. I love everything House Andrews makes and I have a similar style to Miss Presler. If I were to make an unsolicited fan art of the magic legacy world how do I turn it in? Is just emailing it okay?

      A clarification here that if a Hidden Legacy special edition were to happen, Ilona Andrews would not be the ones commissioning it or deciding on the artists. It is a traditionally published series, so Avon (the publishing house) and the special edition publishers who bought the rights would be the ones with the power.

  75. I bought from the Arcane Society box and would LOVE to buy a Hidden Legacy special edition!
    Unfortunately not helpful on suggestions for artists, but sign me up on the wish train for the books!

  76. I haven’t seen a great variety of art/fan art to compare but I do like Luisa’s version of Kate – it feels very true to the descriptions in the book and how my mind had interpreted them. The Baylor sisters also feel very authentic. But I guess everyone will interpret these things differently…

  77. No matter what it ends up looking like, I will buy it! And speaking of fishy wishes, I am just going to throw mine out there — I REALLY want Arabella’s story. These books are among my very favorite comfort reads, and all that unfinished business makes me itchy sometimes.
