Friday’s chapter of Sanctuary (tomorrow) will be the last one of the blog serial. I know, I know. Morena understands our sadness.

Is it really the end?

Not really, no hehe. The manuscript has a juicy, volhvylicious, not to say Rubenesque, epilogue that will only be available in the published book. We like big epilogues and we cannot lie, you other Hordes can’t deny and so on.

Published book? When?

Sanctuary will be published in summer. It will have all usual formats, ebook, print (POD paperback) and audio.

Will it have audio?

Chris Brinkley is doing Roman homework as we speak! He has awesome comedic timing, which is crucial for our favorite Volhv, and wants to learn everything about the character, I firmly believe we’re in good hands. (In good vocal cords?)

The preorder for the audiobook will be available at the same time , but the release probably slightly delayed from the other formats because of distributor and retailer audio file checks admin I won’t bore you with.

How long is it?

::checks manuscript:: Currently 33 k. Edits are likely to shift that, so we’ll end up just a bit short of Magic Tides length.

Wait, you have the manuscript? Because we have some ferrets we can harness!

Yes, the manuscript is with me for the first round of edits. My dryer vents are pressurized and impenetrable, so don’t even try.

Sure, Ilona means it’s mine for edits. But I’m still having it cross-stitched and put on display.

That’s all great, but what have you done for me lately? Why can’t the chapters be on the blog until publication?

The blog chapters will be archived next week for two reasons:

Firstly, because the edits will change the book, and having two versions of events and details only leads to reader confusion. Ilona explained more about the process online serials go through in this post– it addresses Innkeeper serials specifically, but the same considerations apply to Sanctuary. It was written week to week, the content is not likely to change too much, but some things can be clarified, transitions smoothed etc.

The second reason is that we want you to forget as much as possible before the book is out.

      “Romandora”is a perfect name.

    • We could switch it around and put her first: Andoroman. Sounds like a kind of robot, though.

      I do like the Romandora someone suggested. It’s close to romantic. Although it also sounds like it could be a country name.

  10. I just wanted to mention two things. First off, I want to thank you, Mod R. Ilona, and Gordon for continuing this blog. It’s really special that you continue to have so much open communication with us. I know BDH is a headache inducing LOT, I for one am grateful the beasts of the internet that come all too bloodthirsty for creators have not chased you away to hold on to your own sanity.

    Second, I may be an oddball out here, but I appreciate the archive decision. I prefer to forget to I can read the book relatively fresh.

    Lastly, I hope Ilona is up and back to fighting shape quickly!

  20. I am so happy! Ever since we learned why Roman served Chernobog way back, I thought that he deserves tons of happiness for selflessly dealing with all that darkness.

    One question, I don’t know if I missed this: when does Sanctuary take place in the Timeline?

    • You didn’t miss it, it hasn’t been specified, other than Ilona saying she has a feeling it’s “after Magic Triumphs”. It doesn’t seem to influence or cross-reference with the Kate plot at all, so it’s probably not that important.
      Roman is 34 in Sanctuary, that gives us a bit of a clue 🙂

      Roman mentions “New Shinar”, which doesn’t exist until Erra & Aurelia start it in SoCal… a few years after the great battle.

    • I agree. I also have another problem that makes me so very grateful for the blog: extremely limited funds.

      My computer has been dead for nearly eighteen months, all of my e-readers have been either lost or died, and this free phone won’t do e-books. I have no way to replace any of them.

      Thank HA ever so much for professional quality writing that the best web authors only approach but never equal. And they just give it away, if only for a limited time. You give me hope.

  26. So my sister and I were talking… Plotting… Fixating… On this book and we are prepared to speak with our pocketbook on how much we love this. We were thinking about Roman shirts, Roman swag, other scandalous Roman items. Might we drag a Christmas tree to inspire the gods to support sales? Yes. When it comes out, we shall speak with our pocketbook to encourage more Roman delight.

    • Just so you know, we’re not making bootleg Roman merchandise. Perhaps some incredibly artistic interpretations of Roman and his new beloved with puff paints? If you have a Patreon or something else, we’d be happy to donate. Also, any money that we spend at Michael’s to create our fan girl, non-licensed (and not sold to anyone lest Morena freeze our hearts and finances) , 2 T-shirts we will donate the same amount to the glorious authors. We are just 2 crazy fan girls with a keen crafting desire. We are confident our very basic artistic efforts will not turn into snakes. Roman can’t make the same promise. Not sure how to create Chernobog with puff paints, but that’s what life’s adventures are for.

    Also, all my get-better wishes to Ilona! BTDT with the gallbladder. I recommend keeping a throw pillow or plushie to hug to your abdomen while recovering if that area hurts while walking or standing up/down.

    By the way, I have a crochet blanket out of shades of black, grey, and white (it’s called Newsprint) with a black boarder. Maybe Chernobog would have a smile on his face if he saw it on my bed. 😀

    Currently living for the Derek Julie ship.

    • Yes, the Blood Heir series will continue, but there will probably be a few projects ahead of it https://ilona-andrews.com/blog/happy-monday-schedule-post/
      The pandemic inspired Julie’s story (she couldn’t go home, couldn’t see loved ones, had to sacrifice to save them) so it was offered as a serial on the blog to keep our spirits up and published slightly ahead of schedule.

      For the sequel to make full impact, we need to have some reveals in Wilmington Years 3, so that will need to be written before Julie 2.

      • And what about Hugh? I want to know how he and Julie met? I am waiting since last Kate novel to know the story behind the custom made Julie iron dog armour ????!!!

    • A delay of up to 24 hours is normal- the newsletter emails go out to approx 50 000 people and it can take a while 🙂

      I notice you’re on Gmail: unfortunately, the Gmail filters are very persnickety and block us repeatedly. Because we have 3 or more links in a post, or because there are certain words, or our eyes are not blue enough. House Andrews are doing their best, opening support tickets all the time.

  107. I have totally skipped reading the weekly chapters. It was so hard but I promised myself I was going to wait for the final book. I also have a book list of things I want to read a mile and a half long already and I have a hard time reading more than two books at a time. So I shall wait!
