Today is Monday and we have a full plate. Edits on IRON AND MAGIC have come in, so they need to be implemented. Also the beta reads are trickling in and most people dug the book, so that’s great. As usual, we have to expand the epilogue. Galleys for Magic Triumphs are here, and we have to work on Diamonds Fire. We are still adding content to the site. Most of the work is internal, to make sure it all functions as supposed to, but we’ll be updating the front page and the layout.
And of course, there is always the Innkeeper. 🙂
Once I saw the workload, I’ve beat a quick surrender and sent Kid 2 out for food. I don’t have time to cook today. So sue me.
I’m watching the Ancient Magic Bride and Kakakurio on Funimation, and I’m really enjoying both. I really enjoyed xxxHolic and Kamisama Kiss when they came out, so those two shows are up my alley. The Ancient Magic Bride has an added bonus of Celtic mythology and they’ve got the flavor right: it’s mysterious and creepy, with a dark undercurrent, but the show itself is really sweet. So if you have any other slice of life with a magic tint recommendations, I’m all ears.
Taylor says
Diamonds Fire? Is that the name of the Burn for Me novella?
Also, I know it means a lot of work for you, but I am so excited to read all of the exciting works this year! 🙂
sarafina says
Yes, and you can pre-order it on Amazon and possibly other places.
trailing wife says
Here is the Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Fire-Hidden-Legacy-Novella-ebook/dp/B07BK3M7V7/ref=sr_1_6?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1527019241&sr=1-6&keywords=ilona+andrews.
I apparently pre-ordered it on March 27th, so no point in pre-ordering it now. 😉
Omar Mtz says
It warms my heart that you liked the Ancient Magus Bride and that you even fan of xxxHolic and Kamisama Kiss.
Natalie says
I started the Kamisama Kiss Manga and I watched the first season and I assume by now there’s more seasons. I didn’t mean to watch the magus bride I keep seeing references to it everywhere. I love anime with a magic flavor to it and been meaning to get back into it haven’t been watching anything forever. Though I found it hard to find anything good in English that is more my current age group sometimes you just feel like a slight creeper watching high school love sagas. I need something for someone in their early 30s now and again where maybe the characters are getting married and having their own kids. Not that I have my own human children yet.
Natalie says
Thank you phone that was meant to be do mean to watch ? the ancient magus bride
Gundega says
lolz, I’m not getting worried about my age group at all, not even a little bit (~˘▾˘)~
because:
Considering that one of my favorite anime’s (Full Metal Panic) had it’s 1st season in 2002…
…2nd season in 2005 (with side story in 2003)
… and the 3rd season? you bet it. 2018. It’s airing only now (¬‿¬)
That’s 13 years between seasons, people XD
And they had the source material completed 8 years ago, so should’ve been just 5 instead of 13, oh well.
And that’s only one example, I’ve got tons of others if I start to think on it ;p
Well, I’m glad it got animated at all, but damn, the wait was 10+ years.
soooo, you’re never gonna find me getting worried whether something fits my age or not, nope, not me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ahem, I’d recommend Ghost Hunt. It’s completed. And it’s awesome 😀 Not too light or dark.
Have re-watched it countless times (and of course re-read the manga to know the whole mystery/ending, but anime also did pretty good even thou it didn’t continue the last part of the story. But on the plus side – all of the light novels have been made into manga so that’s a bonus ^^ cuz the novels themselves are difficult to come by in English)
Alexis says
And apparently they just came out with the new season of Card Captor Sakura. I was in middle school when I watched it originally, so it was cute for me. Now I’m 30, married, with kids, and I’m wondering if I want to watch 12 year olds awkwardly have a relationship. ?
Natalie says
I remember watching it in highschool. I didn’t finish the series though. It’s the same with Sailor Moon which is what first got me into anime. I used to collect them manga. Buying a new tiny magazine at the comic book store in the mall every time it would come out.
Gundega says
Yeah, CardCaptor Sakura is another one, thou with this one I had no idea that they’d make a sequel for the manga/anime. With FMP I knew the story wasn’t completely animated.
Thou the age thing remains, since I saw-read all of the previous story, now wanna see how it goes, so watching it I am 😀
I think it doesn’t matter the age we are, at times we want something completely different from our everyday tastes, so childhood likes will do just fine ;p
Natalie says
Yes Full Metal Panic is awesome. I read the first light novel too. Kaname was supposed to be born in 1984 means they are technically perfect age wise. And so they finally got that season 3 out I’ve been waiting for as you said many many years. I keep meaning to look it up and see who has it in English. I only have a Netflix account and if it’s not legally free I am out of luck. And I really liked Ghost Hunt. I will have to see if my library has the novels and manga or can interlibrary loan them
Verslint says
Full metal panic is airing a new season???? How? How did I not know this????
Gundega says
yup, it started airing just few weeks ago and so far follows pretty close to the manga (since I haven’t found the light novels in English) ^^
heh, that was pretty much my reaction when I saw the first teaser – what????? it’s gonna be animated???? At last!!!!?????? XD
Kristie says

Here’s a link for the light novel
katje says
I hear you…my current flavor of craving is “magical girl anime involving a group of friends in their 30s, living communally because rent is unaffordable otherwise, and saving the world while dealing with Real Life TM”. Awkward teen love has its places, and I’m almost always on board for it, but it’d be nice to be seen…yanno?
reeder says
Anime female protagonists are rarely above college aged. Maybe try Aggresive Retsuko which is about an office lady red panda dealing with the Japanese workplace. https://myanimelist.net/anime/32977/Aggressive_Retsuko
Kdrama does have some more characters is their 30’s or at least done with college, working, and still broke. My favorite in recent years with this sort of theme was “She Was Pretty”. Love triangle melodrama where the second male lead is a total catch and first male lead has low EQ. Somewhat standard fare except the female friendship isn’t into senseless cat fights.
Tanya says
I’ll have to check my collection when I get home, but I have to recommend _Princess Tutu_. The story starts about a duck, who has been transformed into a young girl, who transforms into Princess Tutu to help the prince. All the writers that I know who have seen it, really like it.
Natalie says
I loved it!
Jennifer says
Love that show!
Variel says
Ditto on Princess Tutu, bonus if you like classical music.
Watched Miss Kobayashis Dragon maid last year, its slice of life and sweet and kooky. Might like that too.
Lee says
I think sending the kids out for food (and I hope she will bring some for you as well) is an excellent idea when you are so overloaded. Maybe she could take over the housekeeping as well for the time being? Save your energy for the things that pay the bills and make you happy.
Bex says
Fairy tail is very good, lots of magic and fun. Also Black Clover is one I am enjoying
Verslint says
Mwahaha! Black Clover rocks!
Fera says
OMG, you also enjoyed Kamisama Kiss and Ancient Magus Bride! I read them both in manga versions. Do try reading Magi: Labyrinth of Magic (it’s pretty hilarious too and with mostly male main characters) or Yona of The Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) – they have the anime version too but the manga is still ongoing and going strong. If you haven’t tried reading chinese-translated novels, please try! I found their plots very intriguing especially if the stories involvels around ancient era back-stabbing and face-slapping plots with some martial art elements thrown in between. My personal favorite genre is transmigration/reincarnation stories with satisfying face-slapping. I have read many similar stories with hundreds chapters (sometimes +1k chapters with around 700-1000words per chapter) and funny facts, I’m still looking to read more everytime I finished a story or waiting for more updates. It was often an agonizing but satisfying journey.
Sage says
I really enjoy akatsuki no yona too. Highly recommend it
Verslint says
Akatsuki no Yona is awesome, I love it as well
Kat T. says
Totally agree with Atsuki no Yona. I watched the anime first and it got me started on reading manga.
Pika says
Yep, Akatsuki no Yona is great too but OMG the romance side is sooooooo sloooooooow. Even now, with the recent scans, even if things were stated in an obvious way, it’s.. sloow T-T Poor Hak.
Regina says
Thank you Ilona!
Kirsten says
Kamisama Kiss and Ancient Magus Bride are both really good anime’s.
“My Little Monster” is a good one as well, it is a slice of life but sadly no magic. Also I have only watched a few episodes of it but “Kakuriyo – Bed & Breakfast for Spirits” seems pretty good so far. And just one more if you like superhero movies “My Hero Academia” is great and the third season is currently being released. 🙂
g027 says
Seconding “Kakuriyo – Bed & Breakfast for Spirits” and My Hero Academia. =)
Verslint says
I started on the manga for all the above mentioned series, because I am terrible at waiting. Normally you have a lot more content you can burn through manga-wise by the time the anime comes about. I do love watching the anime as well though; some difficult to imagine scenes are magical when they’re brought to life!
No recommendations for you, sorry, hope you find something awesome!
Verslint says
Wait wait… Earl and Fairy! Slice of life in a magical setting, hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Only bad thing I can say about it is that the anime isn’t complete, and the translated novels are hard to find…. I’ve read the untranslated Japanese novels so I have some idea of the plot onwards, but my skillz are severely lacking in kanji so I only caught the bare bone highlights which sucks…
KathyInAiken says
I have no magica insight, but your write up for Hugh’s book on the homepage is wonderful! I burst out laughing. The new website menu works very nicely on my iPad. I can now navigate without having to slide the screen around.
I have been listening politely to various insurance and retirements benefits personnel explain to me why $ due me is, once again, lost in the system. If I had a kid at home, I would send them for takeout also.
Lee says
Oh that teaser for Hugh is perfect! I too burst out laughing. Thanks, KathyInAiken, for pointing it out.

Black Butler is quite good. From my understanding the first season follows the Manga, but the second season goes off and does its own thing. While the second season wasn’t bad, I honestly wish I’d just stopped after the first :/
Sword art Online is another good one. The first season is a bit heavy, but the rest is lighter and I quite enjoyed the whole thing.
Attack on Titan is a REALLY well done apocalyptic/horror-esque anime that is not at ALL up my ally as I am very firmly a “happy ending” person, and it is not that. It’s violent, stressful, and dark. I stopped watching it a few times but could not, for the life of me, keep from going back to it a couple of hours later; the world-building is AMAZING. To this day I can’t re-watch past a certain point (the one happy ending), but I can’t wait to watch the next season now that it’s out!
KC Hulsman says
Attack on Titan is Walking Dead but with Giants. ^_^
If you like Walking Dead, you should give it a try.
Mary Beth says
I cleaned the house, did laundry (and put it away! that never happens) dishes, and went outside on the back deck to toss a pot of dishwater.
A board broke under my right foot, pitching me face first into the mud.
I got up, wiped my eyes, pulled out the phone, and asked Hubby to bring pizza home.
With wine.
Believe me, I feel you. <3

Recovery of an mmo junkie, I highly recommend it. It’s geared more towards adults, as the characters are not teenagers. But it was still super fun and adorable. And there was mmo gaming.
andre says
Ok first thanks for the updates Im very happy that everething going ok in the books part… second not sure but you may like Negima and uq holder that ansher some of the open plots of Negima / magical girl nodoka that is darker and shorter than Negima there is also a free fantasy story very famous in the net called mother of learning that I recomend
KC Hulsman says
Fruits Basket <– especially this one, family has every generation one member cursed by the Chinese zodiac, who turns into that animal. Kind girl with tragic past, stumbles into the family secret. Hijinks, drama, tears & warm fuzzies.
Princess Jellyfish <– geeks meet cross-dresser, horizons broaden, humor, romance, drama.
Princess Tutu (biased here, I've got to hang out with days with the creator. The story is much deeper than the name might make you think, it takes the classic ballets and weaves them into a new narrative).
Yona of the Dawn (daughter of emperor finds herself on the run, finds supernatural warriors and those that arent)
Inari Kon Kon (fox deity befriends human)
Petshop of Horrors (older may not be streaming, fits the xxxholic/magus bride vibe)
Slice of life school, no supernatural elements: Ouran High School Host Club
KC Hulsman says
Oh and You can here my voice here: 1:30 mark
https://youtu.be/04CWZi3Xup4
I worked at the land of “FUN” years ago, but got asked one time if I’d like a couple of lines, as this series had a TON of female characters.
Regina says
“Wow!”
Super cool !
ladyreadsalot says
Ouran is another I thoroughly enjoyed as well. No magic but Honey Sempai has mad martial arts skills. Also wish this went longer but the storyline kind of precluded it. I have rewatched this several times just for the giggles at the scene chewing “acting”.
Lisa says
I LOVE Kamisama Kiss! For similar recommendations I’d go with Inu X Boku Secret Service, Vampire Knight, The Devil is a Part-Timer, Fruits Basket, Hiiro no Kakera … I could go on like this for a while, but I’m hungry so that’s plenty to start. LOL
E. Smith says
I will try Ancient Magus Bride. I liked Black Butler but the second season is not as good as some else mentioned.
KC Hulsman says
Second season Black Butler was not based on the graphic novels/manga, I think that’s why it’s not as strong.
Zann says
If you haven’t seen JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, PLEASE watch it! The first season isn’t particularly magical, but the subsequent seasons could be considered magical (and be patient with the most recent season – it starts weird, but it all comes together!).
Also, while not anime, if you haven’t seen Garo I highly recommend you check it out!! Garo Season 1 – though you may have to purchase it on Amazon. ?
Black Butler was pretty good.
***RWBY is a consistent favorite (yay YouTube!).
I haven’t seen Ancient Magic Bride, but it is now at the top of my list!! Thanks for the recommendation and for being so awesome!!!
Pika says
RWBY \o/ !!!!!!!! I need season 6 ._.
Darci says
Hubby and I have been on a RWBY kick lately. And then RWBY Chibi for when we need something more light hearted.
Kaitlin says
Yes! RWBY is awesome! I’ve dragged both of my roommates into the fandom, lol.
Pika says
Lol, I’ve dragged a part of my classmates into it too xD It was how I revised for my English exams : “let’s watch RWBY to train my English !”. (I don’t know if it worked but the grades were good so I won’t stop :3)
Nina says
I loved Kamisama Kiss so much I tracked down the OVAs that are currently unlicensed in the US so I could watch the ending of the series. It’s a shame people are kind of left hanging with the TV series. The OVAs are highly recommended to feel some sense of completion.
Will look up those series you recommended. Especially the Ancient Magnus Bride.
Recommend – Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn) – although I wish they would do a second season!
For Shojo romance – Akagami no Shirayukihime, Kaichou wa Maid-Sama, Kimi ni Todoke
Watching at the moment: Full Metal Panic 3, Fairy Tail (because I’m at episode 60!), Inu x Boku SS
SitkaSpruce says
Akatsuki no Yona – shame it only has one season, because the manga is sooo much better after that *cries*
Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis – super fun, only 12 eps, just awesome. Dragons, angels, devils, zombies, gods and bounty hunters.
Akagami no Shirayukihime – v cute and fluffy.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood – simply awesome. 10/10.
Sword of the Stranger – only putting this up here because it has the best animated sword fights ever. Story is nothing ground breaking, but the fight choreography is intense.
Andrea says
Okay, all I have for a recommendation is InuYasha, but that’s classic so you’ve probably seen it. Where are you finding Kamisama kiss?! I loved that manga, but i haven’t read it in years! Because babies. I only have time for serious reading now, like Ilona Andrews ?
Bhelena says
hello, I love knowing that you see anime, I also see, kamisama kiss and Ancient Magic Bride are some of my favorites, I recommend Hayao Miyasaki movies, especially the traveling castle and the Spirited Away. In addition to the series of anime One Piece (which I recommend is the one that has had me more time has more than 800 chapters, where different values are exposed, friendship, fantasy, not so much romance, but it is great in imagination and ingenuity.
greetings from Chile!

Studio Ghibli is opening a theme park in Japan in 2022 based on the worlds of Miyazaki. My kids were joking and saying that would be a great Christmas present.

I will second Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Sooo good
Blue exorcist was also really great
Regina says
Thank you for mentioning Full Metal Alchemist, now I feel like part of the conversation since I’m familiar with that one .

We also have a Funimation account and would recommend:
1. Fairy Tale (magic, funny, action)
2. Mob Psycho 100 (funny, action, powers)
3. Black Clover ( magic, funny, action)
4. My Hero Academia (action, powers, comedy)
5. Kiss Him Not Me ( romantic comedy)
6. Masamune-Kuhn’s Revenge (romantic comedy with revenge twist)
7. Attack on Titan (action, gore, so different it’s addictive)
Netflix has One Punch Man (action, powers, comedy)
My hubby said Samurai Jack… the latest season closes the story line out and is a great conclusion.
Ok that should keep you busy for a while. Enjoy your anime!
Christine says
Fruits Basket is a good slice of life magical story, and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is a good drama one. Yona of the Dawn is a wonderful magical story with dragons and princesses and humor, but less slice of life.
sarafina says
So I have writing-type questions:
1) I understand about edits and expanding the epilogue for Hugh and Elara;
2) What about MT galleys? Oh, I looked it up, they are ARCs. Who is getting them?
3) I thought Diamond was done incredibly early, are you tweaking it or
adding an epilogue?
4) The website will be delightful;
5) Maud’s Innkeeper is the best!!!!
Ilona says
2) Hopefully nobody for a bit. The publisher is sitting on them to avoid spoilers.
3) We just signed the contract. 🙂 The novella hasn’t been written yet.
4) 🙂 Thank you.

That’s informative, thanks!

Love love love anime and the two of you, of course. Oddly (or not ) I’ve seen and love each of the anime’s you mentioned. Below please find my suggestions;
1. Yuri on Ice
2. Bungo Stray Dogs
3. K
4. Sword Art Online
5. Ouran High School Host Club
Hope you have time to enjoy the summer!

I love that you love anime! We actually canceled Netflix, because we were always watching Funimation. I just recently found one I like on Amazon Prime
Wotakoi: Love is hard for Otaku
And if you haven’t given recovery of an MMO junkie a try. I highly recommend that one too
Liz says
I recommend both the anime and manga Natsume Yuujinchou, its genre: slice of life, fantasy, and supernatural. the main character has a similar story to chise from the ancient magus bride series 😀
Verslint says
I completely forgot about that one, I love it as well
Christine A says
Ajin is on Netflix and my daughter says it’s pretty good. However my all time favorite is Naruto but with English sub titles.
Mumei says
Natsume Yujinchou is a nice magic/slice of life anime, with a melancholy and sweet undertone, along with nice character development.
reeder says
Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun http://www.crunchyroll.com/monthly-girls-nozaki-kun doesn’t have the supernatural element, but it hilariously plays on a lot of the manga & anime tropes “closer to real life”. It features a high school guy who is a shoujo (girls) mangaka and a girl who tries to confess her feelings, but is misunderstood & gets conscripted as an assistant.
The supernatural & yet everyday storyline I’ve seen in the last few years is actually the KDrama “The Lonely Shining Goblin”. So very good. Intro & recaps if you want to check it out (seriously, do at some point) http://www.dramabeans.com/2016/11/love-in-the-time-of-immortality-in-the-goblin/ It also has an older magical being & younger bride theme.
KC Hulsman says
Nozaki kun is hilarious!
I second, enthusiastically, that recommendation.
Beezkneez says
I loved Inuyasha which is complete so no waiting for the next season and Bleach is also great. Love this thread for the recommendations. Can’t wait to get started.
Lila says
Yay, so many books!
Have you seen Noragami? I like it for that dark but actually sweet stories (also, one of my favorite song intros) and Made in Abyss is one of my favorite recent discoveries- this one looks sweet, but it’s actually dark and it has a great concept.
Currently, I am invested in Golden Kamuy. Love the story so far.
Serah says
Natsume yuujinchou

I know these recommendations are old, but how about Pans Labyrinth or Spirited Away?
maddbookish says
Most of the stuff I thought to recommend has already been posted, but I thought I’d throw in Elegant Yokai Apartment Life.
Recently I’ve discovered an enjoyment of food anime and have been enjoying Restaurant to Another World.
g027 says
Some recs:
– The Devil is a Part timer- This one was really funny 😀 Demon Lord works at the fast-food chain lol.
– Fruits Basket
– Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi- This one only has several episodes so far, but I found it kind of similar to Kamisama Kiss
These ones have younger characters, but I enjoyed them too:
– Kamichama Karin
– Gakuen Alice
Sally says
Natsume’s Book of Friends is in my opinion the ultimate slice of life anime with magic . I have watched and read it several times one thing I quite like is that there is no real love interest for the main character which puts the friendships in front and center and the anime really gets so much richer for it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natsume%27s_Book_of_Friends
Kaitlin says
Can I recommend Assassination Classroom? I know it doesn’t follow the magical theme, but I’m rewatching it for the second time and still absolutely loving it.
Kaitlin says
Oh, and I also love Lord Marksman and Vanadis, which does have magic. It also does really cool breakdowns of the battles.
Chibi_Soph says
Not slice of life but Blue exorcist is good fun and if you like sad drama then WorldEnd (sukasuka). Which looked from the trailer like it was going to be action comedy then it totally wasn’t and I depressed my husband.
Kate48 says
One of my favourite anime, and one that I recommend to everyone is Akatsuki No Yona, it is phenomenal. It has adventure, fantasy and action. It’s not as popular as some of the other anime’s, but it is great. Give it a try.

Ancient Magus Bride was good, I recently finished it. I would recommend Snow White with the Red Hair, because I like the concept and world building…but the dialogue is not great. I liked it enough to finish the anime and keep reading the manga.
Someone else mentioned Yona of the Dawn. I love that one, highly recommend it. The main characters go through some serious growth.
This last one isn’t slice of life, but it’s fantasy and amazing. I’m super into Magi right now. The ending left me binge reading the manga it was so good.
Best of luck with edits! I’m waiting on some for a chapter of my Master’s thesis :/
Emily says
Anime:
1. School-Live (apocalypse, teenage girls trying to survive in a school)
2. Erased (supernatural mystery, boy can travel back in time and solves a murder as his childhood self)
3. Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn, thrilling adventure, coming of age story, girl with red hair)
4. Akagami no Shirayuki-hime (Snow White with the Red Hair, girl takes her life in her hands and fights for her life goals)
5. The World is Still Beautiful (girl who sings and her voice calls the rain and has cute romance)
5.5. Skip Beat (no magical element, but young girl working hard for her dream, and its hilarious)
6. Spice and Wolf (throwback)
7. Konohana-Kitan (magical inn with animal humans)
8. Elegant Yokai Apartment Life (high school boy lives in cheap apartment, ends up being a home to supernatural creatures)
9. Wotakoi: Love is hard of Otaku (no magical element, but makes me laugh and has a good romance, office worker meets other office worker and both enjoy gaming and reading manga).
10. Engaged to the Unidentified (just cute romance)
11. The Seven Deadly Sins
Movies:
1. Your Name (magical, romance, love it!!!)
2. Patema Inverted (two parallel worlds collide)
3. Wolf Children (about a mother raising her wolf children)
4. The Boy and the Beast (Mr. Andrews might like this one – boy runs away and ends up running into the beast world where he is trained to fight with a sword)
5. Children Who Hear Lost Voices (story about losing loved ones and traveling to alternate dimension)
6. Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Naussica of the Valley of the Wind (pretty much any Miyazaki film)
7. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (time travel, romance)
8. Summer Wars (young math genius solves a complex equation and puts a virtual world artificial intelligence in a position to destroy earth)
I was so excited that you like anime!!! Thank you for sharing. I went a little crazy with my list, but once I got on a roll I just couldn’t seem to stop. If you need anymore recommendation please don’t hesitate to ask.
Emily says
I forgot one of my favorites:
Library War (girl who fights for freedom of speech by working in the library army)
Joanne says
I was obsessed with anime but now with two young ones I have no time for anime. I do still read manga though. I’ve read Kamisama Kiss and LOVED it in manga and currently reading The Ancient Magnus Bride.
Akatsuki no Yona has been mentioned a bunch of times which I definitely recommend. Sabaku no Harem, Reimei no Arcana, Hana to Akuma are also a similar feel to the two series you’ve mentioned with the latter two having supernatural creatures.
If you’re going to go out of the genre of magic for manga I HIGHLY recommend one of my favorites of all time Tokyo Crazy Paradise. Comedy, Action, romance in the yakuza world and the characters are fantastic! I read the whole series once a year because it’s just so well done. Reminds me of your books. Characters are well developed, and there’s a great balance of comedy, fighting, intrigue, drama etc.
Teresa says
Everyone else has some good recommendations 🙂 Here are a few more I didn’t see listed:
1. Interviews with Monster Girls – sweet slice of life, the storyline is in the title
2. Trigun – action, comedy – no magic but really enjoyable
3. Cowboy Bebop – action, comedy – no magic but really enjoyable and nice jazzy soundtrack
Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are older but still fun.
DianaInCa says
I used to stay up late and watch Cowboy Bebop on the weekends. One of our cartoon channels runs anime late on the weekends.
Jodi says
I am going to have to ask my son about those – he probably knows all about them. So on that note, I probably don’t have anything to add to your entertainment.
Alisa, near Seattle says
Ditto…sounds like something I’d enjoy watching also.
Bobbie Frye says
I’m not sure if it totally counts as slice of life but I’d totally recommend “pullea magi madoka magica” and yes that is a mouth full but it blew my mind when I watched it and if you’re looking for a funny one id suggest the “disastrous life of Saiki. K”
ladyreadsalot says
Saiki is my new hero!!!! I totally loved this and was disappointed it was only one season. I may have to find the manga it was based on. It has been described as gag manga. A character soooo OP it could be ridiculous however the heavy level of snark pushes it past into sublime. (btw not sure if it matters but I am a 51 year old mom – and no my kids did not get me into anime / manga I got them into it, well my husband and I). I want more Saiki!!!
Tatianna says
Love you so much! I’m 46 and I am the middle of the sandwich of anime love of in my family. My dad was first and now my kids are into it as well.
ladylee says
Second season is in middle of airing.
Tatianna says
Omg yes! Love the Ancient Magus Bride so much! It’s absolutely gorgeous and engrossing. So good!
Pika says
The Ancient Magus Bride is great! It was, in my opinion, the greatest anime of Spring 2018 (?? or Winter, not sure about the season). Well, I just can’t believe it was mentioned here x) I didn’t think I could like you more but I do AHAHAHAH.
xxxHolic is maybe my favourite title of CLAMP (after watching Tsubasa reservoir chronicle, I was really interested in the sorceress =p) and I like “Kamisama kiss” too =O If you ever need any recommandations, I’d be glad to help ;p (let’s say, I’ve watched enough animes to be short of them currently T-T)
Pika says
You did ask for recommandations and my eyes just deleted the lines ahah XD. So here you are (for slice of life with a little bit of magic) :
– Kyoukai no Kanata
– Musaigen no Phantom World
– Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka
– Hyouka (not really any magic here but…)
(for now)

just a quick question – …”Galleys for Magic Triumphs are here” .. what does this mean ?
Karen the Griffmom says
The Mari Lwyd has always creeped me out ever since I read Susan Cooper’s The Grey King. However, I’m definitely going to try The Ancient Magus’ Bride, in part because of the correct apostrophe use!

A good throw back you might check out is Fuyumi Ono’s The Twelve Kingdoms anime and light novels. This is pretty old so not sure if you can find the anime anymore but the light novels are pretty special. I like it because the fantasy and artwork is so unique.
Kizziyah says
I usually like sports themed anime. But i also liked kamisama so you might like Black butler, the irregular at magic, inn x boku secret service and gakuen alice. It took me a while to research the titles. They’re all pretty old.

Some supernatural anime with similar vibe:
Natsume Yuujinchou (sweet slice of life with multiple seasons)
Beautiful Bones Sakurako’s Investigation (comparable dark tone)
Both available on Crunchyroll
Brooke says
Seconding the vote for Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume’s Book of Friends). Six seasons worth of episode viewing goodness on Crunchyroll. Twenty one volumes of translated manga. And the origination point for Nyanko-Sensei, a powerful but verbally abusive (sake loving) yokai stuck in the body of a Lucky Cat figure. Some ancestors leave you a fortune. Natsume’s grandmother left him with the ability to see yokai and the mysterious Book of Friends.
Also check out Gugure! Kokkuri-san, a comic anime about a group of older yokai who haunt Japan’s most existential elementary schooler with an instant ramen fetish. Available on Hulu and Crunchyroll.

Kakuriyo is a good and death to the world and sword art online

Oh, that’s funny! I recently found The Ancient Magus’s Bride, too, and was telling my friends about it! XD
Have you seen the YouTube artist LEAH? (www.leahmusic.com). Celtic with some metal blend. I think you’d enjoy her work, if you’re not already familiar with it. 🙂

Well all this is completely out of mynrealm but I can tell you are all having fun! Woohoo!

The Ancient Magus Bride anime is excellent, but I like the manga much more. I find it interesting that the anime revealed things early that were held back until far later in the manga, and I prefer the pacing and reveals of the manga. Still, they’re both way up in my favorites.
sjmcc13 says
I love the manga, and have every volume that has been released in english.
I need to get around to binge watching the anime one of these days.

I second a lot of these but recently I discovered full-colored, original webtoons with EPIC storylines and magnificent art. It first started on Naver when they allowed translations but then a lot of them moved to Line Webtoons. My recommendations:
1. Kubera: The Last God (art is meh but mythology is Hindu and the storyline…wow that storyline is unlike anything else. EPIC.)
2. Magician by Segae Kim
3. Choukakou/Change Ge Xing/ Song of the Long March by Xia Da. A deposed Ancient Chinese princess (we’re talking about Genghis Khan era) runs for her life and survives with her outstanding brain and military strategy. Its a Manwha but the art is culturally spot on and beautiful.
4. Legend of Basara- an oldie but goodie that started the whole “deposed princess turned kickass heroine” manga set in ancient Rome with complex characters who grow and change throughout the story. Warning: EPIC.
I hope you were able to catch this late comment! :”(
Love your work Authorlords!

Ilona, thank you for the Ancient Magus Bride share. Wow. This stuff is great!

Lil late but for most folklore related – I loved natsume’s book of friends. Similar to xxxholic but less dark and more you can watch whatever ep you like.

I was addicted to Japanese anime when I was younger and I would recommend the classic “sword art online”.
If you really want something good to watch, I would recommend the Korean Drama “Goblin”. It won a lot of awards and it’s based on old magical myths found in Asia.
Regina says
For animes I would recommend:
– The World Is Still Beautiful (Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii)
– Kaze no Stigma
– Dance in the Vampire Bund
The K-Drama “Goblin” is really great. You could also watch “Love O2O” (college couple meets through online game) or “Faith” (female doctor travels through time)
DianaInCa says
Question, how do most of you watch the shows? On TV, computer, you tube? Just wondering.
KC says
Well I have a collection of over 700 DVD/Blu-ray discs, and a few VHS amassed over well a long while. <_<
Yes, call me a geek, I've been collecting for ages. ^o^
I also watch stuff streaming legally from places like: crunchyroll, funimation, netflix, hulu, youtube. And then there are special one night only events for films in the US movie theaters sometimes too, or screenings at various conventions.
DianaInCa says
Thanks, that helps.

I loved xxxHolic! It’s still one of my favorites. I can’t wait to check out the shows you mentioned. Thank you!

A few series of the top of me head :
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Interviews with Monster Girls
Spice and Wolf
Flying Witch
One form years ago I likes was “Mahōtsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora” though the ending is a bit depressing.

My kids and I are watching My Hero Academia. I don’t think it counts as slice of life, but I am not sure. We are enjoying it a lot though. Really great story telling.
Vero H. says
Try these two no matter what went wrong that day when I watch an episode they will always make me smile
Sweetness & Lightning
Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku
Brooke says
Another great anime is Noragami and its sequel, Noragami Arragato. Yato is a down-on-his-luck god of chaos who has somehow survived as a deity-of-all-trades in the modern world. But he’s got a plan to become the biggest deity in the Japanese pantheon…too bad the other gods are determined to eliminate him first!

Hi! I recommend that you check out the website anime-planet. It works great for finding shows that are similar to the ones you like based on user votes/reviews. You can also keep a list of the shows you have watched/want to watch or dropped.
I am in no way related to the site, I just find it very useful.

I just finished bingeing Ancient Magus’ Bride and I really enjoyed it!! Thank you for recommending it.
I can’t believe no one has recommended Violet Evergarden. There’s no magical elements but it is on Netflix and it is one of the most beautiful shows I’ve ever seen, both visually and because of the deeply moving storyline (though it has some pretty funny moments as well). The light novel won several awards, I guess.
Also, someone recommended Cowboy Bebop and I have to second that because it is really fantastic!!

I’ve always found anime to be a great way to take a break from work.
I recently watched the Ancient Magus’ Bride and loved it. I’d definitely recommend Akagami no shirayuki-hime (snow white with the red hair) and Akatsuki no yona (yona of the dawn). Also, if you haven’t seen it, the anime movie ‘Your name’ is pretty incredible 🙂
Kristie says
I’ll add just a few more that I didn’t see.
– Code: Breaker
– Magi
– Nurarihyon no Mago
– Rewrite
– Tokyo ESP
– Tokyo Ravens
– Tsubasa, Reservoir Chronicle
Korinne says
To my fellow Horde members who recommended Yona of the Dawn –
I don’t know whether to hug you or curse you all. I just binge-watched it and I LOVED it!!!! But I need more! Do any of you have current news on the manga and if there will be more of the anime? It looks like there are 26 volumes in the manga? Is it complete or are they still making more? And only about half of the series is published in English, correct? Looks like volumes 12 and 13 are coming out this year. Is there an English translation available online somewhere for the rest?
#dyingofanticipation 🙁
