I read this book and was gripped by intense envy. This is the reason why you didn’t get an Innkeeper installment yesterday.
I wish I had written this book. I wish I had written it half as well as Victoria did.
A double life with a single purpose: revenge.
Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes—meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven.
But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.
Nothing can distract Jane from going straight for his heart: allowing herself to be seduced into Steven’s bed, to insinuate herself into his career and his family, and to expose all his dirty secrets. It’s time for Jane to dig out everything that matters to Steven. So she can take it all away.
Just as he did to her.
Once upon a time there was a girl called Meg. Meg was was kind and sweet. She brought joy to people who knew her and she was a ray of sunshine in their lives. Meg was also insecure and didn’t have a good taste in men. What Meg wanted most of all was to meet the love of her life and start a family. She would’ve been an excellent mother. Her children would be nurtured and loved and never neglected.
Meg met a man called Steven, who was funny and cute. Meg wanted love. Steven wanted a whipping girl to indulge his own insecurities.
Two years later Meg is dead. Steven has accepted the world’s sympathies and moved on. He didn’t know about Jane. Jane, the self-diagnosed sociopath. Jane, the ruthless , deep-water shark, who works as a lawyer for an international corporation, who rubs elbows with diplomats, who has no insecurities, and whose only friend in the entire world is now dead.
Jane has taken a leave of absence. She has flown into town. She dyed her hair. She bought meek flower dresses. She got a job at the corporation Steven works for. Meg was the closest thing Jane had to a soul. Jane is coming.
I have never enjoyed a revenge fantasy more. Monte Cristo is crying tears of joy. This should be required reading for anyone intending to date. The depth of characterization, the nuance, the details, the dry analysis Jane performs as Steven is trying to manipulate her is delicious. I don’t remember the last time I wanted the character to get his comeuppance more. I stayed up till 3:00 am waiting for her to nuke this guy.
I stop at my door. “This is me.”
“Must be noisy here by the stairs.”
I let him get his dig in. Yes, I was too stupid or poor or weak to demand a better apartment. Another barely noticeable insult to grind me down, but I know his game and I hear exactly what he means.
“Thanks for dinner,” I murmur shyly. “It was really, really good.”
“I had an amazing time. You’re a fun girl.”
Stone, Victoria Helen. Jane Doe: A Novel (p. 41). Lake Union Publishing. Kindle Edition.
Steven is a piece of work. The way he works on systematically trying to dismantle her self-esteem is chilling, more so because he is convinced of his own goodness through the whole thing.
“You have a cat?”
This isn’t a question. It’s disgust.
“I adopted her yesterday.”
“Cats are disgusting.”
“They are not! They’re great!”
“They walk through feces and then jump onto countertops.”
“Cats are very clean. Their saliva has antibacterial properties and they constantly clean themselves.”
He shudders. “Right.”
“I like cats,” I whine defensively.
He laughs. “Yeah, you’d better be careful. You’re on your way to being a fat cat lady.”
Even I’m surprised by how quickly he’s turned from flirting to insulting me. I cross my arms as if to protect myself. “It’s one cat. And I’m not fat.”
He snorts. I look out the side window.
“It was just a joke,” he eventually says. When I don’t answer, he huffs. “Come on. Don’t pout. I was kidding.”
“That was really rude.”
“I’m sorry. You surprised me, that’s all. I don’t like cats.”
He’s sorry, but apparently it was my fault the whole time. I should have known he hated cats and conformed to his preferences. Shifty or not, it’s a peace offering, and I’m supposed to take it. Accept the blame and swallow my hurt and be ashamed of my weight and my cat.
“I’m sorry,” I respond quietly.
He pats my hand. Everything is fine now.
“You’re not still pouting, are you?”
I sit straighter and force a laugh. “I’m not pouting.”
“Good. It was a really nice day.”
It was. And I came so close to ruining it.
“How about lunch tomorrow?” he offers.
I smile in response. “That would be nice.”
He drops me off and I wave as I let myself into the lobby. As soon as the door closes behind me, my bright smile twists into a sneer.
I can’t wait to take him down.
Stone, Victoria Helen. Jane Doe: A Novel (pp. 73-74). Lake Union Publishing. Kindle Edition.
It is a great book. Vicious and smart, and sharp. I loved it. Loved it. The ending was so bloody satisfying. Jeaniene Frost had recommended it to me and when I finished, I sent her an email that said just two words “Fuck yeah.” She immediately knew what I was talking about. I don’t usually make our kids read books as they do a fine job selecting them on their own, but I am forcing this one on them.
At $1.99, it’s a steal. As always, your mileage may vary, so try an excerpt first.

I read this a week ago and LOVED it. Am still thinking about it.
Protip: the audiobook is also only $1.99 so it’s a steal!
Rena says
Agreed. I like to listen to audiobooks while I am driving and I get Audible for the ones that I buy on Amazon because they are so much cheaper than MP3’s. Plus I don’t have to worry about switching discs or them being in a hot car, being lost, etc. As most of my books are on my Nook, it doesn’t work for many of them. But I do have 50 or so books on my Amazon account. Like the Jane Yellowrock series.

Squeee! Now I know what’s on the reading menu tonight….unless there’s an InnKeeper installment coming??? Oh no I’m not wheedling, whining, begging or anything remotely close to it. (inside my head – yes, yes I am – Chapt 13 Part 1 has me frothing at the mouth for more of the greatness of the AuthorLords – I am so not worthy!) I am officially a silent stalker of the blog, LOL. Thank you!!

I’m not good with cliffhangers in general, but I’m very invested in these characters by this point! I will also be constantly checking the blog to get my inkeeper fix!

I’m with you. I’ve been systematically reading through my “not read” Kindle pile, reading from oldest added to newest added. Problem is, every time I finish a book, I buy the next in the series or another from the same author, so my “not read” pile never gets smaller.
It’s quite aggravating, I tell ya.
Monina says
I’ve given up! I know I will never get the unread e-pile to disappear… But I am happy to know that there will always be something to read if ever I get marooned on a deserted island….

I wish Victoria Helen Stone would write a romance with that sort of insight and depth of friendship. I am firmly on the side of people getting together, rather than tearing at each other.
Ilona says
There is a romance in there. A very touching one, too.
CarolynM says
She writes romance as Victoria Dahl. You might want to check that out. ☺
seantheaussie says
Thanks Carolyn. As my libraries don’t have Jane Doe but do have plenty of Victoria Dahl ebooks and I have just finished a book, I think the Gods are telling me to read Good Girls Don’t.

Oh, yeah, that’s TWO books I’ve added to my “not read” pile because of Ilona! Grrrrr
nina says
When I visit the Tsumiko book page on Amazon (German amazon), the category of “Customers who bought this also bought…..” is full of Ilona Andrews. 😀

LOL I too bought Tsumiko immediately and loved it. As soon as I saw this recommendation I hopped over to Amazon and found it on Kindle for 1.99, with the Audible version for 1.99 too! Both of them for $4.00. Awesome deals. Can’t wait to start reading/listening.

Got this; looks diabolically good, got the audio too since I ordered the book with KU. LOVED your last rec, Tsumiko and the Enchanted Fox and am looking forward to her next issue in that series as well.

I love when the intellectual side of a woman is thoroughly explored in an interesting story! I only wish there weren’t so many women who would might find real life benefits from reading stories like this. Revenge is fun to fantasize about, but my real wish… those who need to will finally see the small manipulations for what they are and understand how they are or have been systematically undermined, often in small but devastating ways.
Thanks for the rec. It sounds awesome. Heading over to snatch it up now. 🙂
NickiC says
I agree. Creating awareness of possible manipulation of feelings and self confidence is important.

I finished “Jane Doe” last night. Fabulous read – what snark!! I feel so sorry for Jane’s loss, but thought her revenge was very classy.

My god it sounds amazing and, as a woman who has had to deal with dating men, so frickin’ satisfying. (No insult intended to the actually lovely, caring, empathetic life partners out there – yes, I do know some of you do exist.)
Going to get myself a copy right now!
Tam B says
This book is amazing! And the audio book even more so. I never (usually) listen to an audio book I haven’t previously read – I couldn’t stop listening to this one. Last weekend, I spent a day entirely immersed in this book and consider the day well spent. I’ve since been recommending this book to anyone who has given me an opening to do so.
For anyone wanting more detail about the author and book, Sarah Wendell (Smart Bitches Trashy Books) interviewed her recently on her podcast. It was excellent.

Andri/Kaylenn says
If you had kept up that blazing Innkeeper pace, we would have gotten horribly spoiled anyway. I will definitely check this book out since I finished re-reading Kate’s books faster than I thought I would getting ready for the 28th! =)
Kate says
…Andri, you trying to sabotage our good thing or something?
?
I swear I might actually become a stereotypical cackling insane birdwoman if we get stuck on that ch13 pt1 cliffhanger for a while. Which is not a particularly good thing considering most of the nearby birds are some very territorial magpies … I’m going to end up a stereotypical cackling insane birdwoman covered in wounds from magpie attacks because you’ll have jinxed the innkeeper deliverance, Andri.
Think about that next time you urge Ilona NOT to put out work so fast.
I’m actually glaring in your direction right now, Andri. The fact that I have no idea what direction you’re actually in has no impact since I’m going to assume that gravity also affects the glare wavelength.
See how insane I’m already starting to sound? This is all on you Andri.
?
Ok, ok – there’s a chance I might’ve started out at least a little insane, so it might not be all on you.
Andri/Kaylenn's husband says
Hi… I’m Andri’s husband… she’s currently laid out on the couch gasping for breath. I’m having a hard time thinking of the last time she ended up gasping for air from laughing that much!
Well done, m’lady!

Please keep up with the book recommendations, everything you have put out there I have enjoyed immensely! I loved this book and her revenge was sooo awesome! I also liked the HEA at the end of the story, always a sucker for that.

Holy Crow! I haven’t ever had to put a book down because I was so mad and disgusted with a character that I wanted to spit! And then I had to pick it up 2 seconds later to find out what was going to happen.
I love Jane and she terrifies me. What a book!!
Nita Hope says
Love your book recommendations. Just got a sample. Can’t wait to dig in and see.
Kit says
Just finished Jane Doe, which should be required reading for all females. This was outstanding writing that never stepped out of character. Thank you for a wonderful recommendation.
Kristin L. says
Bought, loved it, roared with laughter at Jane’s revenge – just wonderful!
I grew up in those kind of churches, listening to that kind of crap about women, gays, liberals, etc. So cathartic to witness Jane’s detonation of all that cruelty, privilege and hypocrisy!
But really, the absolute best is the end. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone so I won’t say anything more, except this: I really love where Jane ends up as a character.
Bat says
It sounds fascinating, but it is in the present tense… I HATE reading a book in the present tense. I have done so, waded through the unpleasantness when the story is good and the author highly talented… well except for that who tense issue. I may try it, but I will be gritting my teeth going in 🙁
Jen says
I usually hate that too, but it’s completely necessary to peak into her delightful mind properly. I was so facinated by her thought process, I didn’t notice after a couple pages.
jbs says
I hate present tense also and probably would not have bought the book had I done my due diligence. However, I have found certain audio books work because the story is so interesting I forget about the tense. Andy Carpenter for one, and Jane Doe for another. It took less than a chapter. In both cases the narrator had a lot to do with it.
Kate says
I don’t get it. If it’s not written in the present tense, how can you get immersed to the point that you feel like it’s happening in the here and now? I’m your opposite. I’m mean, I’m ok with past tense too, but if the writing sucks, then past tense just makes it dull and boring too. Where’s the excitement if the events aren’t reading as if they’re happening right now?
Bat says
I feel like I am on a guided tour. There was a scene in a movie, cannot remember which one where a tour is going on in the background… Tour Guide: “and we are walking…”. to get people moving. I like the immediate past tense….”I walked into the room and scanned the faces around the conference table.”. As opposed to “I am scanning the faces of the people seated at the conference table as I walk into the room”.
It is just a personal preference, I actually am in the middle of a series with present tense. I am gritting me teeth and reading it because I like everything else about it (“Grounded” “Charged” “Wired” , cannot remember the Author). And just finished another I really liked (“Three”, excepted I hated the way it ended). I can wade through if the story and other aspects of the story telling are good enough. But it almost hurts to get started and I do not understand why this seems to be the trend lately.
Authors can do what they like with their stories, but I have often put down.a book because I was so annoyed and distracted by the tense. I have also decided to not continue a series even after making it through the first book because I was literally grinding my teeth while reading. I may give this book a try because it does sound like a good story, but it will be a push to get it started because of the tense.
Judy B says
Just finished, thanks for the heads up,,, great book

Just finished it. F**k yeah, indeed. I evil cackled through the whole book and sent my bestie a copy. I needed the hilarity after the week I’ve had. Thanks for sharing!
Viktoria says
I’m half way through the book and it’s good if a little rushed. What I find disturbing is the statement that the only way a woman can win at domestic violence game is by being a sociopath. The scary part is that it’s more or less true
G027 says
Nearly finished with Tsumiko (and adore it to pieces, thank youu!!) and was looking for my next read. Perfect timing 😀
annamal says
I’m at home sick so this was a fantastic book to read as a pick me up.
Thank you so much!
I could really go for a Jane Doe series, she reminds me of Phryne Fisher, a female character who is interesting because she is in a traditonal male fantasy role (Phryne has the whole James Bond love em and leave em down and Jane is full on competent anti-hero). What’s interesting is that both the Phryne books and Jane Doe have a lot to say about the societies that shaped their heroes.
It’s junkfood reading but with a thoughtful and incisive core.
Bambi says
Finished it in 1 day in between patient consults and admissions. I loved it! Was really glad it ended the way it did. 🙂

I’m about 2 hours into the book and enjoying it very much. Ilona, I see what you mean about the writing, it is tight and perfect for the genre. But don’t sell yourself short, your style of writing is perfect for your books! I wouldn’t enjoy KD or any of your other books if they were written in the style of Jane Doe.
Karen says
Thoroughly enjoyed the book!
Thanks for the recommendation

Purchased! There are too many guys out there like this. I tried online dating. In my profile I said that I loved all types of animals, that I had 3 cats and if they were allergic to animals we would not be a match. I also said that I had a job I loved and I traveled for work 1 to 2 weeks a month.
Guy1: If we get serious you’ll quit your job and find something with no travel, right?! Me: Nope – I love my job and it pays well so why would I give it up. Next!
Guy2: If we get serious you’ll get rid of your cats, right?!
Me: I’ve had my one cat for 20 years. Why would I abandon my cats for someone I barely know? What would that say about my level of caring and commitment? Next!
Me: (1st meeting for coffee). So when were you going to tell me you were married? You have a tan line where your wedding ring should be.
Guy3: No I’m not married. I used to be and that part of my finger just doesn’t tan anymore.
Me: So you think I am a total idiot who would believe that? Next!
But I did meet a wonderful, caring, smart, funny guy who I thank my lucky stars for every day. I won’t play the lottery because surely I used up all my luck finding him. (I met him on Match almost 15 years ago now).
Elena Linville says
And that review just sold me on the book. I love well written revenge stories and smart heroines. Have it on my Kindle and can’t wait to get off work and start reading.
Fera says
Whoaa! A revenge themed novel. The description and the snippets piqued my interest, I will try to dive into the book right after I finish typing this comment. I wonder why I rarely (maybe almost never?) found a book like this that might suit my taste in my goodreads’s book-hunting-by-genre selection.
In return, I mostly delve into Chinese-translated novels where the popular genres are mostly divided by revenge-themed story(or usually called ‘face-slapping’ themed story), story of rebirth (where main character usually is near death and regretting some life mistakes that make their life path thoroughly miserable, then they will suddenly find themshelves wake up years earlier when they are younger and the chains of terrible events hadn’t happened yet. Mostly, the main character was at first either naive, stupid, pushover or all those three combined which led to their careless, imminent death. But after rebirth, they start to adapt to the second chance in life they were given. Recommendation: Princess Wei Yang, Rebirth of Malicious Empress of Military Lineage) and transmigration (usually about modern-day main character who travel to different era that resembles ancient china and resume life there as the possessor body of someone else who had been dying miserably due to bullying/unfortunate terms but instead of death, the main character woke up in that dying person’s body and do badass thing especially to those bully the original body’s person. Recommendation: Chu Wang Fei, Poison Genius Consort).
Although there are many good-old normal stories with no fantasy element but just plain face-slapping like Gu Fang Bu Zhi Shang by Feng Non (set in ancient China) and the ones set in modern time like A Slight Smile is Very Alluring (also known as Love O2O), Trial Marriage Husband, Our Glorious Time, Full Marks Hidden Marriage.
P.S: Whoever happened to read and haven’t heard of them, go give them a try when there’s much free time to spare^^
Tylikcat says
Oo! Thanks! (If there’s life beyond the end of the month, that might be something to consider. I’ve been thinking something light-ish in Chinese would be good5, 2018 at 11 for me, especially since the thunderstorm when my brain decided I should just think in Chinese for the rest of the night.) (One of my best friends seems to be of the opinion I’m going to read Serious Philosophy, but phooey, easy for him, he’s bored with his job…)

((finished reading Jane Doe before bed last night in one sit read –jk, I didn’t read it sitting but rather lying in bed the entire time– and whoaa the feeling, it was very intense! I’m suddenly a bit worried I have quite a scary side in my mind lol X’D))
@Tylikcat whoaa you can read Chinese? Very lucky! Not all the chinese novels I adore are fully translated yet so when I happened to stumble upon a cliffhanger and the next chapters are yet to be translated I usually brave my mind and brain to survive the abyss that is called ‘MTL’ or Machine Translation aka google translate. I guess I lost quite a lot of brain cells in the process but it was that addicting and I’m far too gone with the story :’)

I absolutely cannot recommend the audiobook enough, even if you’ve already read the book once. The voice actress is out of this world; the way she switches back and forth between Jane’s ice cold, sardonic internal narration and her wounded, insecure act as she tries to lull That Asshole into complacency is AMAZING. The book is fantastic on its own, but Nicol Zanzarella adds mind-blowing depth and nuance and really brings Jane to life. She’s now at the top of my favorite narrators list and I’m on a quest to hear the rest of her work.
Amelia says
I loved this book! So amazingly new and different from what I usually read. Jane was super interesting as a character. I love her fascination with the cat!

Definitely a great recommendation. Couldn’t put it down (even at work ?). Loved how Jane could recognize everything Steven was doing to stay in control. And she was right in the end. If her revenge was handled differently, he would have blamed Meg.

Love when you recommend a book. I read your rpevious recommendation and loved it. I also liked the fact that the lead lady was not described, even if it was a bit strange at first. I liked that the author focused on her personnality and I got the idea that if the author did not give her leading lady a face it was because of her soul, a beacon so bright that her physique had no importance anymore.
Will read this one and let you know what I thought about it.
Many thanks!

Thanks for the tip x

I loved a book of hers, written a while ago, about a young woman who inherits her father’s car-repair shop. There was intrigue (people wanted to buy her out and develop the land) and lots of Day to Day details about a young single woman mechanic trying to run a business and maybe having too much on her plate at too young an age, struggling with the responsibility taking over her choices. In the end, the book has a romance. But there is plenty of time to get to know the character and her situation and rural Colorado surroundings. I think back on the book and have an image of the place and an admiration for the character’s perseverance, and appreciate the author taking the time to learn about that life, how the details would hang together, and letting the plot very slowly unfold. No sense of an author rushing or hurrying. No feeling of word count or deadline or editor-hovering anxiety. A writer telling a good story.

Jane Doe is now the #1 New Release. I wonder how much of that is from Jeaniene and IA’s recommendations? Though clearly the book can hold it’s own once the audience arrives, so no credit is to be taken away from Victoria in that regard.
I am heading over to buy the book now – it’s no longer only $1.99 (AUD $6.82), but such is life 🙂

My chuckle for the day. Waiting for some people to leave the office so I can leave too and reading Jane Doe reviews to entertain myself. This one was my favorite. LOL

Thank you for the recommendation. I am reading as fast as I can and Jane is interfering with my bedtime and my work! Steven is such an ass. I can’t wait to see what form Jane’s revenge takes, so I hope to finish tonight. I’m going to go back through the blog and see what else you’ve recommended.

Just finished reading thia. Fantastic book! I loved how she knew the motive behind every move he made.
Did anyone else think the book she was reading at the cabin could have been Innkeeper 2? Or any of the Hidden Legacy books?
“Satisfied, I head back to the cabin to settle onto the couch with the new book I brought. It’s a sci-fi adventure packed with romance and war and intrigue. I love it.”

Ok, this was one of the best books I read this summer and I WISH it was the start of a series. Imagine, undercover Jane making the world a better place, destroying one or two misogynists at a time.

Since you’ve ruined me to most of the books currently on the market, I jumped at the recommendation and got this book. It was creepily good! I have never read anything like it and enjoyed it immensely. Thank you so much for recommending this book and all others. Anything you like, I’m game to try.
