We have been published in Russia!
I know you’re fixing to complain about the covers. Don’t ruin my moment.
Finally. So we sold the rights to KD to a Russian publisher years ago, but the book publication date kept being pushed back and back until finally they were in breach of contract, and the rights reverted. I am so glad EKSMO came along and nabbed them, because look, books! In Russian! They exist.
I have sent a link to my father through Skype and braced for the lecture on how we wrote everything wrong.
Woo! Russian books! Okay, have to go back to EMERALD BLAZE now.
Karen says
Congratulations! Very exciting!

Becky says
Ditto on the huge congratulations!!
I too am really interested in how the translation service works, and if you get to critique/veto it prior to release? There is such scope for the feel of the story to change.

Melissa C says
I actually quite like the covers. *Shrug* the fire lizard on the second one is pretty cool.
Valerie in CA says
Congratulations to you both. Opening up the world of Kate Daniels to Russian -reading individuals is a great accomplishment.
People posting here: do not be buzz kills. Some words just do not translate “cleanly” or “clearly” from English to Russian (And many languages for that matter). Also, some countries have, shall we say, limitations on situations or scenes that can be published. Enjoy the author’s accomplishments and hold the criticism.
Mary Beth says
Congratulations! Huzzah!
Lauren says
Поздравляю!
(Please let Google be accurate and not make me have sworn at you!)
kommiesmom says
Bravo! Nothing’s better than letting the home folks know you made it!
Another country to join the BDH – or whatever that translates to. They are most welcome, though translation may get weird.
The nit-pickers will have an entirely different set of complaints, since Americans are largely ignorant about Russian mythology. (We just assume you know what you are writing about and don’t worry.) There will be at least one person screaming about how you got it all wrong and what do you know – you’re just an American! (Please let us see a translation so we can giggle about it.)
Congrats always!
Erin says
Isn’t Ilona Russian?
kommiesmom says
Yes – that’s why it’s funny!
Erin D says
Ah, I understand. Mea culpa
Carolina says
That is freaking awesome! Congratulations! ????????????
Anne in Virginia says
Congratulations. The covers are fine and anyone who complains about them should take a deep breath and shut up. I have never understood the folks who can’t just be unabashedly pleased for someone else’s good news and rejoice uncritically for another’s pleasure. You and Gordon deserve every bit of good news and fortune that comes your way and having your books published in your birth country is special good news. And wonderful news too for those lucky folks in Russia who will now have a chance to read your fine and entertaining writing in their own language.
Anne in Virginia

These covers are great – more of a fit to HL for sure but Kate deserves pretty covers as well. Now you can read the Russian translation and laugh everytime the translator f*** up your native language. 😀
We shall welcome all the Russians to the BDH.
Simone says
Congratulations! Such great news ????????????????
Angela says

LizF says
They’re beautiful!! Congrats ????
Teresa says
Congratulations. I am very happy for you. Parents get to be disappointed that children do not follow our footsteps but we are always proud of you and brag until our friends can’t stand us. You are wonderful!
Jonathan says
Complain about the covers? They’re great! It’s pretty rare to see that perfect combination of utterly gorgeous art and poor design choices. I particularly love the choice to feature the salamander who only appears in the opening chapter of Magic Burns as an Important Story Feature (presumably because of the word ‘Burns’ in the name).
Really excited for you!
William B says
Congrats. I’m also curious how you like the translation? As someone who was born and raised in Russia I have to assume Ilona will want to check it out.
Billie Dee says
Awesome! And I love the covers, too!
Sarah says
Congratulations. Not ever having seen (or heard to my knowledge) Russian before I found it interesting viewing the covers. They are beautiful.

Congratulations!! They look amazing!! So jealous of the Russian readers that have all of KD new to them. Love!!
Laura says
Congrats!
Wish I could read Russian. Or at least knew people I could gift them to…
Pretty sure the only one of the languages I speak well that your books are published in is English. They’re not available in Spanish or Portuguese at the moment, are they? If they are, I’ll encourage my local bookstore to get them in stock (we might have a big enough population locally for Spanish or Portuguese).
Mezgėja says
Here’s hoping the translations are good. When I go to Lithuania, I usually buy a couple of books originally published in English. So many of the translations are awful. (Tip: Harry Potter was excellently done, Carl Hiaasen’s were shameful).
Elenariel says
I kind of like them, instead! Look at the fire lizaaard!! ????????
Are the characters in the title and your name how the exactly translate?
Just curious
Happy reading to all the Russian fans!
Carmen says
YAY!!! 🙂

Chandale says
I love the covers!!! I’m actually jealous they get those. I’ll have to learn Russian so I have a legitimate reason to buy them.

Love Kate, love the covers, and totally agree that you need to get back to work. I’m so tired of Sapphire Flames, I think I have read it 12 times, and need the new book. Yes I did my part and pre ordered it. Congratulations!

They are beautiful! Congratulations and fingers crossed the Paternal Entity breaks with habit! ????
Faye says
Awesome!!!
Catlover says
Congratulations! How exciting for you and your Dad! Regardless of what he says to you, I have no doubt there will be bragging happening locally. I’ve always wondered why the same covers aren’t used when books are published in a different language. I’m sure it’s legal issues along with that particular country’s “tastes.” Oh well, as long as they stay with the same visual look the books will be easy to recognize for your new fans, and there will be lots of new fans. You may need a new Russian language blog! I remember three words from college Russian, hello, goodbye, and river but only spoken not written. Again, congratulations!
Alianna says
Hah! You’re probably right about daddy bragging locally! Good call! – A.
Harriet says
I cannot even imagine how enormously proud you are of yourself to see your books translated and published in your own language! Congrats!
Anonymous says
Поздравления!
Congratulations! says
I think the covers look very cool and would totally pick them up off a shelf or from my library’s ebook collection. In fact, my library buys some books in Russian, so maybe I’ll see these there!
Pardon my bad Google Translate skills, but does anyone know what the very bottom line on each cover is? I figured out author and title but can’t manage to get those last lines figured out…
Dobercatmom says
Try Google Translate. Download to your phone and you can actually get a “live” translation by selecting “Camera” as the source then pointing your phone’s camera at the text.
Alex R. says
So, the first one is for Magic Wounds (aka magic bites, lol): find the conspiracy (could also be “plot”?), find yourself.
Second one is Magic Burns (that title is the same as in English): magic waves against techno tides.
Doesn’t make complete sense to me, but my Russian is about 40 years out of date. That’s the best I can do.
Andrea D Smith says
Thanks for the translation. Not knowing what was written was driving me crazy. ????
Verslint says
Whoot! Awesomeness, congratulations!

Congratulations !!!! Are you afraid of Russian translation ? My kids always laugh when I tell them that Harry Potter in Russian is Gary Potter .
TeejSD says
Sweet! Congrats! But yah, the covers definately got some kinda Hunger Games/Twilight vibe going on versus our kick-ass Kate! Still, SUH-WHEEET!!!! Getting published in the home country, check! Dad bragging to all the neighbors, yet? 😉

Congrats! I’m curious if the inclusion of LGBT characters in the Kate Daniels books (the Lonescos, Christopher and Barabas, etc.) will be preserved for the Russian translation and release.
Susanna says
Congrats! That is wonderful!
Sandra says
Very special!!!!! Congratulations!!! As overseas covers go, I think they’re lovely. Just think what could’ve been done to them. LOL
And agree that Dad is bragging to everyone who’ll listen 🙂
Molly-in-Md says
So I had fun copying-and-pasting the text from the EKSMO webpage into a translation program. I have to admit that the quotations don’t sound quite as I remember them, going from English to Russian to English again! One of the book titles made me laugh: “Magic is on fire” – that would be “Magic Burns”, I presume 😉
Patricia Schlorke says
Congratulations! The covers are beautiful. 😀
Tiger Lily says

I had a year of Russian in college as I always wanted to visit there. Sadly I remember only a little and never got to visit. I do love the Cyrillic letters though.

Congratulations! This is so wonderful. Thank you for sharing. The covers are gorgeous. May the translation work better than you can imagine. SO cool.
Brenna says
Your books are amazing! My daughter and I count down the months, weeks and days, until they come out.
The more countries and languages in which they’re published, the better.
Congratulations, on the great news!
Maria says
It’s funny, I read the Harry Potter books in both English and Greek, first in Greek and later on, once I moved to the UK, in English as I did not bring the books with me. I was shocked to realise that there were definitely parts of the book where the translation was clearly not exact. I mean, I know sometimes it is difficult sometimes to explain things in the same context in another language due to different in expressions etc but some jokes were funnier in Greek because the translator changed the jokes themselves!
Maria Dee Austin says
Congratulations!
Ama says
Most excellent!
FYI: I actually enjoy these covers as engaging and I’m not a teen.
: ) Do to some of your comments I now kinda wish I was bilingual so I could read a translated book and see for myself how things can go awry.
Eve says
I don’t know I actually like the covers. I’m going to guess that the second one is the flaming salamander haha. Congrats on the achievement! 🙂
Christina says
Congratulations!
Andrea says
lol, does your father speak English or have access to someone who can? Is he in danger of reading this? Several times now you have written things where I have wondered if they have gotten you in trouble with your family.

I am thrilled for you!

Love the covers- congratulations

AWESOME!
I was actually recently considering sending you a couple of questions recently about how foreign language editions come to be, and whether there was a Russian edition of any of your books. I’ve been working to obtain a handful of my favorite books in the non-English languages that I currently read (German and Spanish) as well as languages that I currently only know the niceties of but intend to improve (specifically Russian and Japanese; I have very little hope of finding any Icelandic or Inuktitut editions of any of my favorite novels). Super excited for you!
Alex R. says
Actually, what I’m really curious is how the back cover looks like and what they say about Ilona being a Russian spy undercover in the US.

And that and maybe 10 other words are what I remember from my short lived Russian class. 🙂 Assuming that says congratulations.
MagicTrix says
Cheers for the Russian translation! And I like the covers too, especially the top one. The face they chose for KD is a good one. She has strong cheekbones, eyebrows, and chin, and deep set eyes. There isn’t much else going on, but the face is compelling. And I, too, would love to know the paternal response.
MagicTrix says
That came out partially wrong. There doesn’t need to be a lot going on, since the face is compelling. More stuff would actually be distracting.
Lena08 says
CONGRATULATIONS world authors. Sooo HAPPY for you.
Now the Russians will be hooked too!
Carolyn says
That’s awesome! Congratulations!!

AWESOME! I mean, who wouldn’t feel incredibly puffed up to see their books in Russian. You gonna share what your father says?

That must have been nerve-wasting, waiting them out…
Were you involved with the translation?
(I work with translation and translators, and the thought of someone translating my writing without checking it fills me with sheer horror. I see too many translation horrors daily.)
P.S. *in very small voice* covers still 50 times better than English Nevada trilogy…
Zee says
Congratulations! And the covers look awesome.
sarafina says
I remember reading you saying the Kate books would NEVER be published in Russia. I’m glad you changed your mind. Do you think they were translated appropriately?
Tapati says
Congratulations! I would imagine Russian readers will be very happy with your books. I think the covers are fine. 🙂
Lynne B says
Best wishes for a huge success! Hope you sell millions of books!
aneliese says
Congratulations! I really like the “Magic Bites” cover; it’s gorgeous.
On a side note, I went looking around at that publisher’s site and found a cute coloring book featuring cats and yarn. Here’s the preview:
https://cdn.eksmo.ru/v2/ASE000000000721045/read/full?logo_type=ast#features/
It’s interesting how coloring books have become a global phenomenon. And the nice thing about them is that they don’t even need a translation–I would happily pick up this Russian one if I ever saw it in a store. 🙂
aneliese says

So happy for you!
Checked the titles in Google, bites turned into hurts, which seems equally appropriate, with regard to the contents . Funny how small words can convey different things in different languages..
I think it’s a wise move to publish the first two books at the same time, I remember I got tempted by book one and hooked by book two.
The Ilona name should hint at a Russian being behind the stories and hopefully tempt more people .I hope Russian readers enjoy the series as much as I/we have.

Honestly I don’t see why people would complain. I’ve seen some BAD covers. These aren’t bad. I’m super excited for you guys though! YAY RUSSIAN!
V. Farris says
Wow, congratulations!
Question: on these lovely covers, the author name is large and center, while the book title is smaller font at the bottom. Is that typical of book covers in Russia?
(yes, I read cyrillic, haltingly)
Ilona says
That has nothing to do with Russia and everything to do with being a multiple bestseller. 🙂
V. Farris says
Excellent!
