Graphic Audio has the preorder up for Magic Bites. We have high hopes for this production. For those of you who buy GA titles on other platforms, like Audible, the preorder will take longer to show up, so please don’t panic.
To celebrate, here is a tiny snippet. This is not an indicator of any work in progress. It’s just a snippet.
“One of the men I loved had a war dog,” Erra said. “He was this huge drooling, farting, foul smelling beast, bred for combat. Ugh, I hated that dog. I never hurt him, but I didn’t want him near me, so I would stomp and shoo him when he got near. A surprisingly cowardly dog. He’d gone up against lions and men in battle, but he’d see me and run.”
A six-foot-tall woman built like an Olympic athlete wearing full armor and filled with roiling terrifying magic. I’d run away too if she stomped at me.
“Is there a point to this story or did you just want to share your disturbing hobby of tormenting loyal dogs?”
Erra grimaced. “You take great advantage of my love for you. Anyway, the dog was only afraid of two things: me and thunder. Every time lightning split the sky, I would find him shivering by my bed and no matter how much I stomped and yelled, he wouldn’t leave. He just sat there, shaking, until the storm passed and then he’d slink away.”
“Aha.”
“I finally asked Leo why the dog did that, and he told me that I was the most frightening creature the dog knew. When the thunder came, he ran to me because I was so terrifying, I would scare away the thunder and keep him safe.”
I laughed.
“Listen to me, you insolent brat! People are the same. Whether you like it or not, you married a First.”
My laughter died.
“And yes, I know that your love is the greatest love there ever was under the sky and he left his Pack for you, but he took the reins of power when he was 15. He grew up being the Beast Lord. It wasn’t just his identity; it had shaped his way of thinking. And I don’t need to tell you that his successor isn’t faring well.”
No, she didn’t need to tell me that.
“When things fall apart in Atlanta, as they eventually will, the shapeshifters will panic. They will run from that thunder to the scariest person they know expecting that he will make them safe. Do you think he’ll be able to turn them away?”
“I don’t know,” I told her.
“Your face tells me that you do know.” Erra fixed me with her stare again. “And even if he somehow decided to say no, you would say yes. All it would take is one vulnerable, helpless person with a sob story and you’ll trip over your feet to take them under your wing.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m retired.”
“You need territory, a defensible base large enough to house many people, money, powerful allies, and connections to the local government to make it all work. Do you have any of those things?”
“No,” I squeezed out.
“Then you should get busy, shouldn’t you?”
“Thank you, dear aunt, for once again listing all of my failures.”
“I’m trying to keep you alive. If you want someone to tell you how special and wonderful you are, go see your father. He wants you to fail so you’ll be forced to run to him and beg for his wisdom.”
“What happened to the dog?” I asked.
“He sired many puppies and lived to a ripe old age. I kept a pillow by my bed, and I would drape a special blanket over him when the storms came. I buried both the pillow and the blanket with him when he died, so he wouldn’t be scared in the afterlife. Give your husband and your son my love and get to work.”

I loved my pet so much I buried his posterity with him so he wouldn’t be lonely…..
I kind of feel like that’s Erra in a nutshell. Loving but crazy.
Ewa says
Yeah! The more I know about her the more I like her.
ConnieK says
is it loving but crazy or crazy but loving? ????????????
Sara B. says
I read that as she buried the blanket and pillow with him, not his posterity/puppies.
Erra also protects those who come to her for protection …
Lorye says
At first I thought she said she buried the puppies too and I was like NOPE but then I realized she buried his pillow and blanket with him. Not his kids ????
Pamela F says
Thank you for the snippet. So good. GA is going to be a blast.
Heather says
Oh I so love how Erra accuses Kate of being a big softy only to find out she kept the dog and its puppies in spite of the fact she “hated” the dog. I guess it runs in the blood, eh Erra?
Tink says
Well, she did say when she first met Kate that she reminded Erra of herself.
Thanks for the snippet.
Pristine says
true!
Ana says
She buried him with a pillow and his special blanket, not posterity…even Erra is not that cruel.
That snippet was just what I needed. Thank you.
gingko-girl says
Delightful. I never thought I would grow to like Erra as much as I do. Thanks for some sun on a snowy morning!

I’m not sure which I like better. Whether it was after listening to all Erra had to say, the only response Kate had was, “What happened to the dog?”or Erra’s response that she kept a pillow next to her bed and covered him with a special blanket to keep him from being afraid even to the point of burying them with him so he wouldn’t be afraid in the afterlife.
In the end, it was all about the dog. Sounds like my house – we do everything we can to keep Gypsy happy and not afraid.
Ewa says
It was about the true heart of Erra. The heart, which is well hidden under the monster facade.
Emily says
grinning from ear to ear despite a headache and an all nighter with the babe.
thank you for the lovely snippet.
mimi says
Ah, the Erra and Kate show, gotta love it!
Patti HN says
Wonderful! Thanks for the snippet; it gives my day a lift! Hope you are doing well.
TiffanyCrystal says
Big scary Erra, protector of puppies. Lecturing Kate for the same thing, lmao. I love it.
Relin says
Erra being an absolute sweetheart. <3 Of course she would do that once she learned why the dog would hide by her.
And also bringing the awareness of potential next problems and how to prepare. She always thinks ahead. Thank you for the snippet gift!
Laurence says
Ohhh so lovely!
Thank you so much for the snippet which is not linked to any work.
🙂
Maria Schneider says
Oh, I’ve bought direct from a few audio places before and been very pleased. Awesome news. Thanks for the snippet. (non-related, referred another of my fav artists to your previous blog post. Excited to see how it all works out!)

Oh my I love this snippet! At some misty future point, I sure hope you both think it’s worth developing. Thanks!
Since they go back to visit in the summers, can’t they pass hints to Dali and keep Jim from imploding? I still like Jim despite his faults. Even with Curran, it wasn’t a truly workable setup for the long term.

THAT SNIPPET!!!
I’m wondering if this takes place before they bought the Wilmington property? Maybe?
Oona says
I think that yes, it is when they are leaving Atlanta or just before the whole Red Horn story. And damn if Erra didn’t get it right. Because, guess what? Kate just made friends with a shifter pack Alpha from her old stomping grounds (allies), Beast Lord is building a massive fort with room for many (and he’ll get that moat one way or another, LOL), The Order is aware of her (done them a favor by taking out Red Horn), aaaand… she’s got some loyal People who know her as Sharratum …and will come to help should she need it. Plus the mer people she freed are owing a favor or two to her. Now, money and all that I’m not sure about, LOL.
Thirza says
a moat by a sandy beach….. I don’t see it happening
unlesssss… magic
but so far that doesn’t last
sarafina says
Hugh used that Roman cement iirc, don’t know if it will hold back a beach.
Bill from NJ says
Roman cement can set under water, so Curran could use that. Roman concrete mixes are superior to what we have today in many cases, they made a concrete that had what looked like stones embedded in it that turns out was self healing concrete.
.303 bookworm says
No moat and the house is too small to replace the keep. BUT magic tides did show that land access to Wilmington is essentially secured by the people/farm and could be isolated very easily. If Kate/Curran gained the loyalty of the people then potentially the whole of Wilmington could become (sort of) secure location. I think I need to check google maps though!
Isabelle says
I loves it, I loves it so much❤️
Gypsy says
I love these snippets and novellas. After reading Magic Tides, I could do with seven course meal à la Brandon Sanderson. I want a 1000 page KD feast to devour. Put all the new books in one; I’ll buy it!
This is like “In baking something delicious but I’m not telling you what it is. Have a little lick of the egg beater.”

It’s a rainy day and I needed something to make me smile. I loved your snippet. Thank you for sharing.
Lorie Barnes says
While I thoroughly enjoy everything Ilona and Gordon write, Kate Daniels and her world will forever be my favorite of the characters they’ve created! I already own all the mass market paperbacks, the ebooks, and the Audible formats of these books. Now, I get to add the Graphic Audio versions. I am doing a major happy dance right now! Woohoo!! 🙂
Reenie says
Totally agree!
Jon says
Not sure if it’s the writing, me, or a combination of both, but I’m totally on team Erra, but still don’t trust (or like) Hugh. Two redemption arcs, different receptions.
Meredith says
I think Hugh did horrible things under Roland’s control. Once free of Roland, he redeems himself. Erra did horrible things all on her own. When she came to Atlanta lots of people died. She grew to love Kate, and she’s fun, but she’s a monster. I’ve never felt she redeemed herself. Unless I missed her being under Roland’s control as well?
sage says
She was not under Roland’control, she believed his lies. She was lost and alone. And still in a war from before. Once she had learned of her brother’s lies, and had a moment to rest with family, she found something to live for. As a person gets older, change is harder to live with. She had to rearrange her priorities.
Pam says
Aw, the ending is adorable. Erra let the dog sleep by her bed. With a pillow and a blankey.
Keera says
I am so excited for the GA release. And thank you for thw snippet of seeing the warm and fuzzy side of Erra!
Paula says
I love you guys! Thank you for the snippet on yet another grey January day.
Soulfli says
I love Erra. Her heart might be wrapped in barbed wire but it is a mighty force!
She’s also so loving in a curmudgeonly way!
Siobhan says
Erra knows Kate so well because she’s exactly the same. I hated that dog. But he needed me.
Siobhan says
And now I see that I am late with this observation, heh.
J says
Awww, she loved that big smelly dog. Feeling all the warm fuzziness from this snippet!
Patricia Schlorke says
Thank you for the snippet!
I’m rereading Magic Triumphs. Hugh and Elara are in Atlanta, Kate is with Neig, and Curran’s hair is like Fabio’s 80s hair. Erra is still in her knife. Roland still being Roland. ????⚔️????
When I was skimming through Iron and Magic, I had this little song going through my head, if Curran and Hugh wanted to trade taunts: “My moat is bigger than your moat; my moat is bigger than yours.” ???? Elara and Kate looking at each other and rolling their eyes.
Trisha says
Love Erra!!
ConnieK says
thank you for this snippet! just what I needed on a morning of chaos toddler being chased by demon toddler (those of you who know that stage a three year old hits know this is an apt description), who is terrorizing her older sister, aka raging toddler (4 year old)… who is raging for no apparent reason other than she can? it’s been a week iny house and yes, I know it’s only Tuesday.
o. a side note, how is ModR? I’m hoping everything went well and she is home and doing some devouring of books and ice cream ????
M. says
Would Leo be Leonidas – king of Sparta? It would be very befitting for Erra to allow such a man to attach himself to her
Ms. Kim says
Oooh.
Lorye says

I’ll be ordering that audiobook. I love Audible, but Graphic Audio is even better.

Erra and the dog – Kate & Grendel (smelly, vomiting, silly, drooling, garbage eating Grendel), the line breeds true……
Loved this – Thank you!
Toni says
so Erra is the “Dad didn’t want the dog” meme ????
Norbert says
Ahahaha! Like niece, like aunt…
I really love how the last paragraph turned things around.
I think that is from Hugh 2. if it were Wilmington 2, at least the defensible base could be checked off.
(Just speculatin‘…)
Akiva says
Has to be either from Wilmington 2 OR a stand-alone filler (since it takes place after Kate retires — and Hugh 2 takes place before Triumphs.)
Jon says
Could be from a Wilmington 2 prologue, even though the conversation likely occurred before the first Wilmington book.
cmc says
I love Erra
Kendra says
snippet squeeze! I love Erra.
Stef says
arrghhh! I’m obsessed with this snippet! I love Erra so much!
Linda says
Loved this!!
Ms. Kim says
Yes, that is how I see Curran and that is why this series is so special. A strong male lead with his own powerful capabilities and drive distinct from the romance story. Or that drives the story. Their dynamic is so real and balanced between the two. Thank you.
Lee says
Great snippet! Thank you for the look inside Erra’s past and her unexpected tenderness for the poor dog once she understood his perspective.
And for her ongoing relationship with Kate. She may be pushy and blunt, but she does have their best interests at heart!
Gretchen says
Thank you so much for the snippet, I love hearing anything about Erra. I think it’s scary, though, because it sounds to me like Erra is telling Kate that she needs to prepare to run the pack again with Curran. If so, poor Kate! She hated it so much.
Ms. Kim says
Except I think they both learned useful lessons about delegation and hopefully how to have a structure less encroaching.
Mary Cecilia says
The way that y’all keep making me smile so try giddiness this month has me on a KD high. I can’t wait till the rest of the world wakes up to the fact that this world and y’all’s other work is in need of the big screen treatment and then the BDH will multiply to take over the planet. Kid wizard who lives under the stairs who? Give me a smart mouth with a sharp sword and a crazy lion lover any day ????
Ms. Kim says
+1000 for bringing to big or small screen.
Gaëlle from France says
I would be happy for Ilona and Gordon, but I really don’t want to see this happening. They almost always butcher the original work, and I really don’t want to see it happening to the KD world. That would break my heart to have Kate and Curran becoming less than their amazing selves.
Ardelle Hughes says
omg I really hope your writing another full length Kate Daniel’s book, maybe ever a few more books in the works. you have so many threads out there that will pull into a masterful extension of the series. looking forward to seeing what happens
Judy Schultheis says
It shows a certain family resemblance.
Crystal Johnson says
The loveliest tease…
jewelwing says
I’m dealing with a serious veterinary issue right now. The last paragraph tore my heart out and stomped that sucker flat. The previous statement is not a criticism. Many thanks for the snippet.
Kat in NJ says
Sending you many virtual hugs. In my experience, serious veterinary issues can knock you just as far down as people issues can. (Only pet owners truly understand that.) Hang in there…
jewelwing says
Thank you. Working on it.
Catlover says
You have reactivated the “missing Kate” gene. I really enjoy these characters, the humor, and the world. Certainly would not want to live in it but happy to read about it. Looking forward to the next project whatever it is and thanks for the snippet.

I love this snippet and how it shows Erra’s humanity. Even she had to learn about analyzing behaviors and looking at things from the point of view of others to be a better leader. Now she is using the teaching moment to pass on the knowledge.
Your writing is just so superb, it isn’t just the story that you tell, it is the way you use the words to tell it that has me sit back in amazement and satisfaction. Thank you!

I love the flawed characters, heroes and villains alike, and the best villains are always the ones that you could find yourself rooting for, just a little bit, in different circumstances. Erra and Hugh are the perfect examples of villains turned anti-hero heroes
Dallas says
Thank you for the snippet. So much potential for further story lines. where would this fit in the story line I wonder?
MicheleMN says
Thanks? Your snippet just made me cry. Please keep going forever!
Lara says
awwww erra is pretty wonderful and really read the room right on Kate and Curran. thanks for the snippet.
I’m re-read the Kate series again, and no matter how many times I’ve read them they are still so hard to put down in the evening to go to bed.
Kat in NJ says
I never thought I would identify with Erra or read a sweet story about her, but now I have! Love dogs, and love this snippet…thank you! ????

I love this so much. Erra is just the best character.
Katherine says
Erra, you old softie. Thank you for the snippet
Brianna says
” I don’t need to tell you that his successor isn’t faring well.”
Iiiiiinteresting. Wonder what’s up with Jim.
Alicia says
yes!
Bill from NJ says
There is mention of it Magic Tides. basically the pack is becoming unwieldy ( in my view) and Jim doesn’t have the strength of the charisma to keep it together. The pack has grown, the implication is Jim let far too many ppl join them.
Ms. Kim says
Well, we read in Julie’s story that Jim was looking for a replacement so he and Dali could concentrate on raising kids. Ascanio was working on getting the pack to pick him, but wasn’t seasoned enough and couldn’t overpower some of the Alphas.
jewelwing says
That’s two years after Magic Tides. A lot can happen in KD world in that time.
H says
You can say in so many ways how great of writers IA are, how their stories have made an impact on your lives in so many ways. The last paragraph “I kept a pillow by my bed, and I would drape a special blanket over him when the storms came. I buried them with him when he died, so he wouldn’t be scared in the afterlife. ” breaks my heart reminding me of those beloved companions that have passed on and a reminder of why we animal lovers do what we do being the safe harbor for those that need us. For in my opinion a life without an animal companion would be very bleak even though when they eventually pass on it hurts it is worth having them in our lives.

looks like the fortress in Wilmington is not big enough
Kat Marvel says
Bless Erra. When we first met her, she was so terrifying and, well, evil. But no, we don’t do one-dimensional antagonists in House Andrews. She’s also a fiercely protective pushover for stinky, cowardly dogs.
Kate really is her niece.
Sara T says
As always I think this is the best snippet ever!!!!

Kayeri (aka Darth Mom) says
Wow, even a snippet from you can bring me to tears! =) I have no idea if this will ever develop into part of a larger story, but I love it as a stand-alone snippet. Thank you! Btw, is Mod R recovering well from her procedure? I sure hope she is!
jewelwing says
Seconded on all counts.
Kellie says
Great news and great snippet! The graphic audio books are wonderful. I wasn’t sure about them at first, but I absolutely love them now. I was just wondering a few days ago whether you would make the Kate Daniels series into graphic audiobooks. Woo hoo!
Mardee says
Oh, such a wonderful snipped! Thank you! I love Erra – she is a master at the art of disparaging put-downs mingled with affection.
Cheryl says
“huge drooling, farting, foul smelling beast…” Sounds like Grendel!

I love this snippet SO much! It’s giving me life today. Don’t think I’ll ever get enough of Kate and her world. Thank you! xoxo
sarafina says
So now Erra will be in the When-Kate-Met-Curran book? That will shift the timeline.
Ilona says
No, the snippet is not a part of GA production. It obviously takes place during Wilmington years.
sarafina says
Ok, I was thrown off by the Magic Bites reference. Thanks!!
Kim H says
Everybody loves A Good Dog, even bad-a**, world-burning warriors.
Anke says
Thank you for sharing the “not indicator of any work in progress”.
sarafina says
Mod R, I need you.
So yay, but will the CD for this come later? That is what GA has done in the past.
Ilona says
Mod R is not here today. This release will follow the established GA format. Everything will be the same as Innkeeper series, or at least that’s the plan at this stage. 🙂
sarafina says
Great, thanks!
Kimberly says
Oh Thank you Ilona and Gordan, you keep feeding my addiction and I love you for it!! Magic Tides was wonderful and this snippet is also wonderful! It’s time for a reread and it’s great news about the audiobook! I will wait until it comes out on the audible platform though. It’s gonna be hard but it must be done! I wonder if this snippet was a part of Magic Tides and it was edited out to make the novella a certain length.????
DianaInCa says
Thanks for the snippet and updates about audio!
Ac says
I miss the Erra and Kate show. Thanks very much for this snippet
Bill from NJ says
love the snippet! The dog sounds like one of our dogs, she is like 100lbs + and is terrified of thunder ( along with the dark, the sound of airplanes, little kids screaming…can only imagine being a rescue what she faced. then again, her littermate/brother, is this big happy goon who is afraid of nothing,go figure).
My wife and I had been talking about this after reading Magic Tides, and we both saw what era did, that likely they would face creating a new pack in the future. At least Erra agrees with us:)
One thing that came out of the Zoom this weekend was Illona saying Jim wasn’t a bad guy, I don’t agree. I would love to see Curran give Jim a beat down of epic proportions, Jim’s behavior was undefendable when Curren was out of action and Kate was fighting for her life. Either he was too weak to act or it was deliberate, in either case Curran owes him a major beating.
sarafina says
With Curran in a coma, Jim may not have felt strong enough to stop the wolves and Mahan (who was being a jerk). Other clans supported Kate. Curran did beat Mahan, remember. Not everyone in the books has to act the way we want them to act.
Treya says
Was up late with my husky last night as she was panicking because of a storm and needed company as well as to be kept away from carpet (she digs). I would get her a pillow but she would destroy it in about 3.6 seconds, I wish it would help though she gets so stressed. Excited for GA release and hit that purchase button PDG.
JDavis says
Have you ever tried a Thunder Shirt? It helps calm my dogs. Also every time it thunders, she gets a very special treat so she has equated thunder with something yummy.
Treya says
I have not tried the thunder shirt yet, have the pheromone collar and a harness. Will look into it thanks 🙂

Not sure if this is spoilery, but did anyone else start wondering whether Derek would become the new Beast Lord with Aurelia/Julie as his mate?
Ms. Kim says
Oh, that’s right. I had forgotten about Derek’s new status as Beta to Alaska pack. Hmmm.
jewelwing says
Not sure how that would mesh with Julie’s role in New Shinar.

I loved this so much I could cry!!! Loved the snippet, House Andrews *kisses* I’m on my 4th re-read and only now realized how much I love Erra. I believe she’s my most fav secondary character in the entire series. Maybe coz Kate is so much like her…
Pavni says
okay I know this is just a snippet but my heart jumps for joy and I absolutely CANNOT wait (if or whenever this snippet turns into more :)) for more Kate and Curran work and Magic Tides was simply glorious.
Thank you!!!

❤️Erra!
I love how Kate has tough love from her auntie. Will Wilmington be her next Atlanta, unintentionally?
Rorie Solberg says
I place this before the move to Wilmington and the purchase of Fort Kure. I love it. Thank you.
JDavis says
HA is endlessly creative! The characters are so well-developed and complex, they always stay true to their basic nature no matter what circumstances the authors place them in. This snippet just emphasizes that. What a great set-up for the Wilmington years. Can’t wait!
Claire says
Loved this snippet. Thank you so much for cheering up a very busy day.
I’ve recently been re-reading all the KD and related books and this definitely sounds like this is the genesis of the Lennart-Daniels Gated Community which Nick refers to in his Atlanta orientation briefing in Blood Heir.
Brittney says
I love Erra
Patti says
Sooooo gooood! Ezra is awesome! I knowvits just a snippet, but I look foreward to more anyway!????
Jan_nl says
Thank you. I loved this snippet so much. I got the sense that the pack is struggling in Blood Heir and I was really curious about its future since Jim wants to retire. Easy to imagine that the pack would take Curran back in a heartbeat but Kate’s desire to raise Conlon and soon to arrive baby sister as ‘normal’ kids will take a beating. So cool to consider the possibilities…
Jean says
Love it! Thank you!

Sqweeeeee!!! Thank you for the Snippet!! I look forward to each one! I’m equally excited for the Graphic Novel!
Gaëlle from France says
It’s so good, so so so good. A few words from you and I’m hooked. I’m always surprised when your snippets end, because I’m enthralled by your words, and I’m like « aw, yes, I’m on the blog, not the book » and I have to come back to reality.
Amanda P says
That was lovely, I actually like Aunt Erra now ????
Many thanks dear authors for spoiling your BDH ❤️
Rebecca says
“To celebrate, here is a tiny snippet. This is not an indicator of any work in progress. It’s just a snippet.”
Nice try!
You KNOW the BDH is already slavering to get our mitts on this not-a-work-in-progress book, right. You KNOW. 🙂
I love how our much-revered House Andrews thinks that we will be less grasping and annoying if we don’t know the exact nature of the particular piece they are working on. Foolish, foolish (brilliant) authors! WE WANT ALL THE BOOKS! We don’t care which series, we want it and we need it and we will die without it NOW!!!!
It’s a sign of how beloved you are, doesn’t that make it better?
Alex says
I love Erra! From the 1st book, she was special. So glad Curran’s god magic gave her another chance to live as she really wanted to live.

I just told my scary “war dog” (an American Staffordshire Terrier aka “pitbull”) that if she didn’t quit whining because there’s stuff on the couch I was going to yell at her. I seriously Heart Erra. Looking forward to GA for Kate!
I am wiped out after restraining my 6’2″ guy in a dental chair for a teeth cleaning and fluoride treatment that took an hour. For extra surrealism, The Great British Baking Show was playing on the ceiling monitor – his choice. Then I got to play the am I / am I not insured game again that has been going on for eight months across two dentists, the insurer, COBRA, and my former employer (spoilers, I am and always have been, but not everyone has received the proper message through every channel imaginable, so they all default to I am not, and send me invoices). Bonus points – it was a phone call while we were in Costco.
Now another doctor appointment. But first, I get to challenge the Truly Huge house spider in my sink for the right to wash dishes. At least I got my summary of yesterday’s two doctor calls written up and distributed as needed.

Our healthcare system might as well have been designed by Rube Goldberg. Although any design of his probably would be more efficient than what we have now. On second thought, maybe it was M. C. Escher.

Aunty Erra is the best!
Cynthia Emery says
You know, we don’t believe the snippet WONT be a story but to help that along, there wil! be prayers, candle lighting and possibly dancing. And last paragraph started a crying jag that will leave my eyes swollen till tomorrow. only your writing can do that. thanks.
lbink says
Awesome! I’ve missed the KD world. Magic Tides is starting the addiction again. this fits right in. Great snippet! Thank you muchly!!
Ina says
This feels like it means Kate will rule Wilmington like her family has ruled their own kingdoms in the past. I’m so excited about the possibilities I feel like my face is gonna split from smiling so much! ????
And yes, I’m definitely ignoring the disclaimer about the snippet and indication stuff haha
Tara says
Well that got interesting
KC says
I’m miserably sick with my annual Texas Crud (oh how I loathe you Mountain Cedar pollen). So this was an unexpected pick me up. <3
May the BDH be blessed with many more snippets and stories to read for many years to come.
Sue F says
I just want Erra and Damian Angevin to get together. Let’s see, maybe Damerra? Errian? Love the scene at the end of Blood Heir where he sees the picture of Erra…
Maybe he’s a descendant of that wonderfully dysfunctional (but powerful) Angevin “family”, Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine? So might have some chops to match up with Erra?
Susan A says
T.H.A.N.K.Y.O.U!!!!
Tabbi says
These snippets are such an insight on what’s,(maybe,) to come. I love Erra, she is such a badass.
Elenariel says
Thank you for Erra’s pearls of wisdom snippet! ????
Stacy says
thanks, love the snippet and all your hard work. just an idea can we get another map, of who is where and how far apart they are, Erra is here, Hugh here, and of course Kate, Atlanta as neutral spot,or Julie’s. for some reason I can’t get a good grasp on whos where and how far from Atlanta they are and from each other too.
AmberDawn says
thank you sooooo much for the snippet.
i have not read magic tides yet , due to an unfortunate accident with the husband losing and then cancelling the credit cards, so i must wait for the new ones to arrive before i may purchase it. but soon i will have it, with in the week.!!!
hugs and happyness to you and yours

Well, with this wonderful snippet, I feel duty bound to buy the GA of Magic Bites. LOL. No really, I already have a few, and I will add to my collection. My goal is to have them all on ebook (which I do), paper back (which I am working on) and Audio.
Stacy McKnight says
Snippet! Just the word now makes me happy but not quite as happy as the reading of one lol!
Karyk says
Oh my, i need more, it’s like a light in the darkness in this time for me
Rohaise says
Aww. Erra buried the dog with his blanket & pillow. Thank you for the lovely snippet.
Caz says
This snippet is a savory appetizer. Quality writing like this takes time and inspiration. I’ll patiently wait for whatever HA wants to write, whenever they write it.
Kristel says
I absolutely loved this little story!! I am incredibly grateful for the gift of story telling that you share with us all. I can’t wait for another book that will take me longer to read than an evening so I can savor it for a while.
Mellany says
Love it! Thanks for sharing!!
Monique says
LOL!!! That was soooo good, funny, and just DAMN! Love this stuff!!!
AP says
Thank you for the lovely snippet – great bit of story between Magic Triumphs and Magic Tides!
I got my GA pre-order last night – so excited for it to come out!
And I’m just finishing my 2nd listening of the SotH audiobook – love Nora!!
Karen T says
your snippets are better than a lot of other author’s full length novels. ????
thank you. I’m going to spend the evening on my 3rd reading of magic tides.
Olga says
ooooh I LOVE it! Thank you
Maren says
that was freaking AWESOME!! but I read the top so fast that I missed it was a new snippet and was going “HOW DID I MISS THIS??? WHERE IS IT FROM??” lol!
I love this. I know Kate and Curran say they don’t want to be in charge anymore but they are the best people for it. I would 100% want to be in their orbit if I was in their world! You know you’d be safe with them!
Megan says
Yes 100% agree! They are both naturals and others just want to follow them. I always understood (and supported) House Andrews having them walk away from the pack, but I could not see how anyone could replace Curran as Beast Lord. I would LOVE to see Curran and Kate back in a position of power over the pack.
Maybe not as strict as it was the first time around where their lives were very controlled but definitely still some options!
Thank you, thank you, thank you House Andrews!
Julie Flick says
Love snippets!! Make my otherwise rough day.
Vesper Young says
Same story with my mom’s old dog. Terrified of my dad, first sign of thunder, my dad would find out because the dog was suddenly under his legs while he sat at his desk.
Haven’t had a chance to dive into Tides yet, but I’m eager!
Savil says
oh yay, Erra’s love language is the same as my mom’s…pointing out all the things I’m doing wrong with my life 🙂 it’s really from a place of love, but man its hard to hear all the time
Joe Ellett says
This snippet is great in and of itself (as are all IA snippets), but it also opens up so much for future KD stories. After (hopefully) many more novels, will the pack end up in Wilmington, or will there be a political shift from the Atlanta pack to a Wilmington pack?
Nikki says
I don’t understand what is different about his vs audible. I wish there had been a video we could watch. Just reading the dialogue made no sense to me. Please post more so we/I can understand what you are selling … Thank you.
Moderator R says
Hi Nikki,
The difference between Graphic Audio and traditional audiobooks is that GA is voiced by a full cast of actors, one for each character, and it has special sound effects and a soundtrack. They are closer to an audio play or radio theatre vs the traditional narration done by one artist.
You can follow the links in the article and listen to a sample.
This post isn’t selling anything ????, it’s making readers aware of Graphic Audio preorder.
The snippet is a separate treat unrelated to the audios – you probably have not read the Kate Daniels series if the dialogue doesn’t make sense, you can look into here https://ilona-andrews.com/kate-daniels-series/#katedaniels
I hope this helped ????
Rhyn says
That’s so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Layla says
I love and adore Erra. Always have. Seriously. She is the best. Don’t kill me: but I want an Erra novella.
I can just see the special pillow and blanket. Kate comes by it honestly.
ANN A says
Dang. At first I really hated Erra…but then you had to go and bring her back and now I love her tobits. Same thing about Hugh. Ugh. You guys are the master of redemption.
Linda Trainor says
yay ????????????????????????????????????????
Tineke says
Thank you for this lovely snippet!
Claudia says
Thank you for the wonderful snippet! Am so excited that the original Kate series is coming to Graphic Audio; they do such an amazing job bringing the written word to life, it’s completely spoiled me for “normal” audiobooks!
Gundega says
Erra is right to tell Kate to prepare, the shapeshifters will come to Curran and likewise Kate hefself has people who’ll come to her.
SUZANNE ROTHCHILD says
THANK YOU! I needed that!
mdy says
Oh, I’m bummed to read that Jim isn’t working out (still) as the new Beast Lord, because I was kinda hoping he would grow into it. I’d discovered the KD universe and House Andrews through Magic Steals (a Jim + Dali short story that appeared in the “Night Shift” anthology), so I have such a soft spot for them and just want them to be happy. Maybe stepping down as Beast Lord is the way to that happiness.
Dawn says
I think Jim is too bloody paranoid to be happy in command. Too stressful and he has to splinter his attention too much. I think he would be happier back being Curran’s head of security, which is his high point. I can actually see Jim slowly pulling The Pack into an insular entity with minimal contact with the rest of the world.
Marisa says
Love the snippet, thank you so much!
Rae says
Am I the only one who reared up? This was so cool but also… right in the feels. Everyone give your pup an extra treat or pat today. You never know.

Genie HIllen says
Thank you, this is lovely,
Bea says
OMG, my new, couldn’t wouldn’t believe it, hero is Erra. Badass bitch, yeah!!
MariaZ says
Has anyone noted that Kate’s family is slowly establishing power bases in the USA. Erra on the West Coast, Kate on the East Coast, Julie in Atlanta, slowly insinuating themselves into the community.
Moderator R says
It’s more that wherever they go, people gravitate to them. I wouldn’t say any of them have a desire to rule a power base as such. But when you’re powerful and you do your best to make the world a better place, communities want to join ????. Fortunately.
Wendy S says
Erra is brutal but brilliant. Guess Kate will be gritting her teeth a lot as she mulls Erra’s advice. Great snippet! Love seeing these slices of Kate’s happily ever after Life Among the Ruins. Go House Andrews. You are the greatest!
Sarah says
Will this come out as an ebook?
Moderator R says
Magic Bites already exists as an ebook 🙂 . And paper format, and traditional audio. https://ilona-andrews.com/katie-daniels-books/#bites
The snippet, as specified, is not necessarily part of any work in progress, it’s just a snippet treat 🙂 . It’s also not the thing Graphic Audio are adapting, which is the Kate Daniels series.
Nicole says
Thank you!!
Dawn says
Wonderful snippet.
Question: I’ve always wondered (wondered of other authors in the same position too), when you write characters like Erra and Hugh who are fairly despicable at first, do you know that you’ll eventually evolve them into ‘the light’? Even a hint? Or does it come about as a revelation some time later?
Alex says
Oh Erra. Character arcs like hers are the reason I love this series.
Maria M. OToole says
Ah, Auntie Erra, the inventor of tough love.
Dela says
awww
that made me choke up ????
Marsha Simmons says
I absolutely love this! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Snippet for the win!
Kay says
*snippet love*
Brightfae says
That was a wonderful snippet. This conversation with Erra and all of Magic Tides has had me thinking about the nature of HEA’s and such for a couple of days.
It seems to me that there is a HEA and then there is the getting on with the living of life and doing it happily. Kate and Curran (and all those who will ultimately follow them to Wilmington) are doing the latter. And it takes work and thinking and planning…..and moat building. Erra knows that.
Thank you, HA!
Audrey L. says
God I love Erra. I’m so glad she developed into something beyond her brother’s mad wrecking ball. The story of how she, a shining light of Shinar, became that singular frightening identity would be such a beautifully tragic story to read. *wink*wink*
Kimberle says
love it I have really missed Kate and her world.
azu says
Love it.
Leslie says
I’m drinking my morning coffee and I read that last paragraph and it made me remember all the amazing dogs I loved and lost and now I’m tearing up over my latte. You guys manage to pack an emotional punch stronger than any other authors I know in such concise ways. ????
Emilye says
Wow. Everyone needs an aunt like that!
Patricia Smith says
A suggestion as a narrator for Kate – listen to Linda Howard’s “Now You See Her” read by Laurel Lefkow – she is able to convey the snark that I picture issuing from Kate without becoming unlikeable.
Sandy says
This made me so happy!
Susan J says
Erra buried the blanket with the big smelly cowardly dog so he wouldn’t be scared in the afterlife.
I’m crying.
Charity says
Oh my gosh! Hot coffee, rainy morning and an amazing znippet, perfect way to start the day! Thank you!
Lenore A. Villa says
OMG! That is so awesome!
Absolutely LOVE Erra and Kate’s relationship.
Lea says
I have missed this universe so much. Just delighted to be invited again.
