I have good news and good news? Good news one, the recording of audio for Magic Claims started. I got to impersonate Kate and snarl some battle incantations yesterday. All the R-rolling, heh.

Good news two: Magic Tides and Magic Claims will be bundled together as one audio book.

Why is that? Because it will save you money. No matter how short an audio is, there is a certain price threshold that’s built into it. Instead of spending a credit on each one through Audible or paying extra, we are bundling these two together so you only have to spend 1 credit or pay less than you would for two separate releases.

  5. Mod R, will you actually be on the audio recording? That’s so cool! (Or if you were demoing for the voice actor, also super cool!)

    One of the things I love about things like the moderated online zoom talks is being able to put real voices to the written comments here :).

    • The ebook for Magic Tides has already been released 🙂, but I will ask about the whispersync option.

    • Whispersync is available for all kindle books as long as you have turned it on for your kindle devices and apps. It’s part of content management settings. I have the kindle app on two phones, an iPad and a desktop pc. All my books automatically sync thru the apps.

      If you’re thinking about having your kindle read the book to you, I believe the devices still have that capability. But the kindle app does not. However, you can turn on text to speech in the iPad settings and then have the kindle app read to you. I don’t know if that’s also true in the new android phones. It will not be the same quality as the audiobook tho.

      • Whispersync is only available if the contents of the ebook and the audiobook are identical 🙂. Since the audiobook will be a bundle, it won’t match the ebook, released separately- and that’s where the question comes in 🙂

        Also, of course, Whispersync is only available if an audiobook format exists in the first place- which is not the case for all Kindle books.

        Whispersync is distinctive from “immersion reading”- the impersonal AI voice you reference- which can render the book aloud (I wouldn’t really call it narration by any stretch. As you can tell, not a fan 😅. Ofc, it’s valuable as an accessibility feature though, especially if there’s no other choice)

        • My bad. You’re referring to whisper sync for voice, where you have to own both the ebook and the audible book. I wasn’t actually thinking about that, so I was no doubt talking at cross purposes with literally everyone.

          You can have whisper sync just for kindle books, just for the audiobooks and between the two if you happen to own both versions. It honestly does refer to synching everything across multiple devices. Also synchs any notes or highlights you’ve made. And no, it won’t work between the audio bundle and two separate ebooks. Sorry for any confusion I created! Honest!

          • I was also told by Amazon-Audible that the author/publisher has to select it. I’ve got ebooks & audiobooks with no whispersync so I asked. It also seems to work best when you buy the ebook first and add the audio option.

        • Download the Alexa app and open your Kindle book through it. Alexa will read it to you and she’s really not bad. She’s no Renee Raudman but she’s much better than Immersive Reader.

  21. Can audio books be played on cell phones?

    Would Bluetooth headphones oe speakers work best?

    • yes they play on cell phones with internet capability. headphones vs speakers depends on personal preference and who else is in your space. can be played to Bluetooth speaker if just you in the area too. or if everyone happy to llisten.can be played on car speakers if phone connects to your car radio.

    • Oh my yes! When cd players disappeared from cars, I had to make the switch to mp3 players and then when Bluetooth became widespread, onto the phone they went! All my audiobooks are now in the cloud and I just pull them down to my phone when I want them. I listen thru car speakers on long drives and via Bluetooth earbuds while exercising etc. The only inconvenient thing is having them on four different apps depending on where I bought them. But I’m working on that too now that I’m retired, heh.

    • Yes, audiobooks can be played on any cell phone – that is dependent on the file format however.

      If you can aquire a MP3 version of the audiobook, it can be played on any cellphone, even dumb one, with provision it supports mp3 format (basically anything from 2010 onwards)

      If you are buying audiobooks from Audible or otherstores which are using DRM, then you have to have a smartphone (either with Android or iOS), which supports the app from the audiobookstore in which you prefer to buy in order to play it.
      Of audibookstore I know of, the Graphic audio, and then Audible offers the best quality (with Audible being miles behind and others another miles after Audible).
      Or wait some time, with HA popularity, the GraphicAudio version is just matter of time.
      Graphic Audio version, can be downloaded DRM free, in either 256/320kbit stereo MP3 (and is playable anywhere) or in lossless FLAC format (the best sound quality).

      I would recommend BlueTooth 5.0 stereo headphones, style depends on your preferences, but go for models that can last at least 8 hours without charging.

    You guys do this sort of thing for us, a lot.
    And you wonder why I want to bake you chocolate chip cookies, or banana bread cupcakes, or others want to do art for you. (yes, most of us know that you would fill up your house with not really useful stuff, so we refrain.)

    • I can see the other self-published Ilona Andrews works there, so yes, it’s on the list of audio distributors 🙂

  54. Yay! With supreme self restraint I waited to read Sweep of the Heart only with audiobook. I used to devour things immediately but as I get older (is this adulting, send help) I just find that those pesky responsibilities get in the way of enjoying things some times. I wanted to save it for when I could listen stress free, responsibilities free. I listened to most of it throughout a 2 week vacation that I just got back from yesterday. On long train rides, scenic drives through the French countryside, staring at waves gently crashing into the beach….

    It was really fun and made my vacation so much better. Down time was Inn time! I’m glad I took the self imposed innkeeper break, (though multiple times I wished I could read the comment sections, not going to lie 😆 Can we keep that up for posterity? xD) I loved the audio reader and the little chapter introductions. thank you for making my vacation extra fun 🙂

    • Graphic Audio are adapting the main KD series at the moment 🙂, tackling the 3rd book. The Wilmington Years series will probably have to wait a bit before it’s under discussion.

    • You will be able to get this on Audible and all the other usual retailers 🙂 (I believe there are a few hundred, so it’s always worth checking your favorite’s one catalogue).

    I know some folks disrespect the audiobook format but for many people it is vital.

    I deal with T.E.D.(Thyroid Eye Disease) which makes reading difficult. Having double vision in one eye takes the pleasure out of curling up with a book/ebook. But audiobooks came to the rescue! Thank you for continuing to support this unabridged format. I already have the Audible credit waiting for it.

    On a side note, I have friends who have read MT, and I have to keep telling them “don’t spoil it for me”. Lol, keep up the awesome work.

    • The release date for new books will be announced officially on the blog and on the Release Schedule here https://ilona-andrews.com/release-schedule/ – when the project is finalised or in its later stages 🙂.
      There will be a sequel to Iron and Magic, but there is no news yet to it’s release.
