Explanation
I was hoping to have a bit more time to prep for this, but you guys found that it went live and we had to scramble.
80% of the audio sales are coming from Audible/Amazon. That’s where the majority of our audio readers are. Audible is also the fastest on the upload, as you just saw.
Normally we distribute our books through a distributor, and they feed it to Audible and all other retailers and library aggregates. We take a pay cut to do this, because we do not normally like exclusivity and Audible/Amazon rewards you with better royalties if you go exclusive.
But we wanted this audiobook to be available before the holidays to the majority of readers. 90 days is the shortest exclusivity period we could get.
We are also not sure what exactly is happening with the Audible royalty structure. They have put out a press release announcing the rollout of the new royalty model. It is a bit confusing as to what exactly our royalties would be under it. It is also not clear when it’s going to be implemented. So we wanted to squeeze in before it hits to avoid uncertainty.
You know that we strive for transparency, and in this case, this is a business decision.
To reiterate: we opted for the “available now” option to Audible/Amazon customers, and then available after 90 days to libraries and other retailers. It allows us to get the book into the hands of the majority of our audio readers before Christmas and allows us to get the best royalty. After 90 days, it will populate everywhere else and will be available at all other usual retailers.

This is because I mentioned ACX on social media accidentally. ACX is the self-publishing arm of Audible. When writers talk about it, they say ACX because that’s who we deal with on our end.

4) Why does the preview not contain any Ada?
The previews are auto-generated. So even if we try to tell Audible where to snippet, it is usually just automated on the product page. If you listen to the sample available on the Audible search page, you will get the retail sample deliberately chosen to showcast both narrators.

I get the Amazon/Audible thing. At this point in my reading/listening life, I am firmly stuck into the Amazon ecosystem. I don’t want to be, but I also don’t want to give up 3,000+ books and all my audiobooks. I suppose I SHOULD make the effort to download all the books onto my hard drive and save them off in a Calibre library against that future point when Amazon says “yes, we know you bought this book/audiobook, but really, you just rented it and now you can’t listen/read without paying us again,” but all that work? Arrggghhhh
I get it!!! I found the pause option really helpful to start to wean off. I got I think 90 days? You get it once a year, you can still use the credits you have and sales. But you get a break in the charges and no new credits. I’m still terrified to lose my books, but I remind myself that if Amazon changed their mind right now I would lose them anyway. I have already had issues with accessing old books (that I paid for) WHILE paying for my account. And libro fm is a pretty good option for much less predatory practices (and the books are DMR free!). What I really like about it is I don’t have to do a subscription. And the only way we will get Amazon to change is if we stop using it as much.
But I’m in the exact same boat about the books I do have, I’m so overwhelmed by digital stuff like that. I’m also super attached to some authors that do a lot of exclusive to Amazon deals. I’m relieved as heck that the inheritance is only exclusive for 90 days.

I finished it today and it was great. Aside from the wonderful story itself, I especially liked how the scenes that have Ada and Elias together were done. I wish all audio books handled more than one narrator that way.

Just for the record, The Inheritance is one of the best books I’ve read in so long, please please consider a full series! Ada’s world and perspective is so refreshing to step into, and I especially love the urban sci-fi expansion for an older MC (with kids!) and being an actual badass (woman) inside and out with her actions and decisions.👌😌

Somehow I completely missed this serial, so I was thrilled to learn about the book in August. Decided to wait for the audio, so I bought the book on 10/31 and finished it in less than 24hrs. Soooo Great! Could not put it down, not that I’m surprised, being an extremely chalant member of the BDH and all. Thank You so much for all your awesome stories. I’ve searched and searched, I read all the current Inheritance tagged blog posts. Couldn’t find:

. **SPOILER** What is the relationship of the Breach Wars and Innkeeper Chronicles universes for future stories?
Specifically…Inheritance seems to be in the Innkeeper universe but there was never any mention of – breaches on Earth, the Tsuun, or an interdimensional war – Will these items be in future Innkeeper books or is Breach Wars in an alternate universe from Innkeeper, meaning Dina’s Earth will never encounter these?

I very much loved this book! I kept putting it off bc I keep thinking it may not be as good as the Kate Daniels series but I was wrong. I am a huge fan of this series. This ranks up with there with K Daniels. I like the that protagonist is older which resonated with me. How soon will the next installment be? I can’t wait!
