Hi everyone, Mod R here.

It’s Friday, we can all hear the siren song of the weekend, what better time to fun around?

Firstly, there’s a new sample of Magic Strikes up on the Graphic Audio website: it’s the scene where Kate and Jim first arrive at the Rakshasa hideout in Unicorn Lane! I’ll remind you that we got a blog exclusive sample of the Midnight Games arena, which you can listen to here. If you can hardly wait after listening to those, the release is next Wednesday, August 23rd on the Graphic Audio Access app- and it will show up on Audible and other 3rd party retailers on September 12.

And secondly, I bring you 3 character-guessing quests: a quote challenge, an image clue puzzle and a riddle. Each refers to a different character and all House Andrews series are on the table, but they’re not as hard as usual. 2 out of 5 Chernobogs difficulty, at most.

Let the games begin!

First challenge

Name the character who got up to hi-jinxery:

“Look, I took one small fish, then the guy started screaming, so I slapped him with it. It wasn’t my fault he tripped and fell into a stall of fruit. So I laughed, and they all started chasing me.”

Probably Jim, right? ::pokes tongue out at the Beast Lord::

Second challenge

Work out the image clues and guess the character they refer to. That’s all you get!

  13. Hi, I’m have a….difficult…medical appointments day (2 rescheduled for MONTHS AND MONTHS from now)…so brain not at all sharp…
    but 2nd image is Bug’s coffee cup – Hidden Legacy, as well as one of his drones — Let’s say over Baranovsky’s mansion in White Hot?

  15. The first one, I have to guess yet. But the second is Dr Doolittle, and the third is Aunt B (that little practical joke her late husband played on her that backfired on him…)

  17. Tithe answer to the first challenge is Hugh, from Iron Magic, when he’s remembering his childhood.
    2nd challenge, #2 is Bug, but I can’t think of the other two.
    3rd challenge I believe is Calendina.

  18. I often wonder what it says about me that I suck so bad at these. . .

    I realized after someone suggested Jack for #1 that I have never done a reread of the Edge series (I was think Conlan or Keelan for number 1).

    2 is totally Bug because Napoleon

    3 Aunt B (wanted to say Jim or Rafeal) but after someone mentioned the meaning of the name Beatrice, I was like duoh!

    • I am just finishing my reread of the Edge and now I have to reread Innkeeper. I might have a BDH problem.

    My confidence level on this is roughly 1.5 Chernobogs.

  20. Ok I’m terrible at guessing games. But here goes. No idea for #1, none, so I’m throwing Jack out there as someone who might steal a fish as a joke. I think #2 is Bug and I think #3 is Rose.

  21. OK. I’m one of the worst ever at puzzles, but here goes: Jack for #1, Bug for #2, and officer Marais for #3 just because of the covered with feline urine line.

  31. I am so bad at this type of thing. Did not get the first two until I read some of the posts (of course Bug! French bulldog and a surveillance drone).
    I’m thinking Aunt Bea for the third, but not all of the riddle fits for her, so it’s just best guess for now.

  35. First is Jack since because he is quite often in difficulties for his demeanor. Second is Bug because of the french bulldog. Third I had no idea but the BDH voted for Aunt B and now I can see it as well.

  38. I think the first character is Arsenio.
    Bee on flower is Aunt Bea,
    Mug could be Cornelius (Nevada has mugs with cute kittens, not sure about Catalina’s mugs…).
    The flying drone thing is probably Bug.
    The riddle is a puzzler – maybe Kate’s dad or aunt? the “leader” thing would seem to rule out Kate herself, since she doesn’t like that role. Someone that Curran had a beef with…

    Sigh… I’m not very god at this!

  42. My guesses is Jack from the Edge and Innkeeper series. The second is Bug from Hidden Legacy. The third I’m guessing Kate Daniels

  44. I know that 2 is big and that’s all I got. 3 is throwing me for a hard loop I want to say 1 is a shifter but I can’t be sure.

  47. I had thought 2 was Caldenia but someone said Bug and that makes more sense. Number 3 I think is Aunt B.

  49. 3rd challenge is aunt Bee the house sprayed in pee was when her mate was courting and glued everything to the celing including the cat in a cage above the celing fan and the pee

    other two, guessing Bug and Aunt B for the last one….but those two I wasn’t 100% sure…actually surprised I was correct.

  51. The only one I knew was Aunt Bea. I was guessing Ascanio for 1 (even though I didn’t recall reading that, it sounded like something he might do as a teen) and had no idea on 2. 😄

  53. My guess is for the third riddle. My answer is AUNT B.
    She was talking to Kate about how her first husband courted her trying to give advice about curran.

  54. Um, #1 is Ascanio, maybe? He may love the ladies, but he’s a flaming jerk around men. Serious problem with authority.
    (Not even a clue on the other two. That’s one of Ilona’s coffee mugs….)

  56. OK. I got Jack right off the bat, but couldn’t get the others until I looked at the answers. (Facepalm moment!) Arggh! Now I DEFINITELY need to go back and reread all of them!

    Pictures clue = ??? (LOL! I read ahead. Of course it’s Bug!)

    Limerick = Kate Daniels-Lenart (I think Curran marked her house as his territory early on, she’s the true embodiment of Shinar, she fights to save her family. I see you Aunt Bee voters, that also sounds correct.)

  61. I’m obviously mediocre at this type if quiz. I got one out of three correct – I immediately thought of the Aunt Bea and the Boudas in the 3rd question. 🤣

    I have only read the Edge Series once, so I never thought of Jack. I did guess a juvenile, but was thinking of Ascanio lol.

    The photo quiz had me stumped.

  62. Hmmm i’d say:
    – first challenge is jack when he was supposedly undercover with George in steel’s edge,
    – second i’d say Catalina but this is the one where I ‘m the least confident (with the bee being a reference to her ability, the mug with the dog her tendancy to drink tea plus reference to her dog, and the plane her job as a warden?)
    – third is aunt b definitely 🥺

  67. First Challenge – that was Jack (I think)

    Second – uh – took some thought – bee pug flying = Bug – pretty good one Mod R – bees swarm, dog, b-ug, and drones too.

    Third was harder but Aunt B for sure, but I’m not sure I would have gotten it without help.

    Jack was easy but I have a little auntie type crush on (boy) Jack so his antics stick with me. I love mischief.

  68. Jack, Bug, Rafael (his dad stuck the cat in its carrier on the ceiling in his courtship with Rafaels mom and the cat peed and ceiling fan made the urine scent spread everywhere in the house.

  70. Ah, saw others post about Aunt B and for sure, that fits better since she was fighting valiantly for her bloodline and the grammar is possessive vs a historical not shared about family.

    • Yes, yes, even if Bug’s HEA is a cabin in the woods, it would be great for him to have one!! And 2 more dogs!!!

  74. Hiya- I’m going a little off topic, but I’ve got to say how awesome Graphic Audio of first in series for Innkeeper is! Sooo fun! Reminds me of the old time radio shows where you’d have every character standing at a mic, the sound effects guy at the ready, and a band raring to go. It was perfect- I downloaded it for a road-trip with my 13 year old son, thinking it would be fun to get him to listen to my favorite authors and give us something to talk about on a 12 hour drive. Mom for the win!!! He always poo-poos my books, but now he’s asking me if there’s more;) Love it!

    It was my first time listening to a Graphic Audio- I liked how they softened the character’s voices who were in a different room, but was wondering if there was a trick to hearing them better? I swear at one point I was given an HD option for listening, and I could hear the out of room characters just fine, but then I wasn’t, and the characters were muffled and it was hard to make out what they were saying. I cranked the volume to try and hear them better for those bits, and the rest of of it was aok volume wise. Could be I’m just getting older and in need of an ear trumpet;) Any insight would be very much appreciated, as I would love to get more audio books from them:)

    Thanks so much for a stellar experience connecting with my kiddo- he was outright grinning and laughing. This from a teenager who is in his I’m too cool for school phase. Fabulous stuff;)

  76. Mod R, thank you so much for this! I just finished a space opera with a great first story and very dark second book (with a dark ending, too!). It left a bad “taste” in my mouth. Your snippets with the answers made me laugh and helped wipe that book out of my brain! I think I’ll go re-read an Ilona Andrews book (or four). That’ll cure what ails me.

  77. I am really bad at this kind of games. But you are right. These challenges are easier than the one that keeps me awake at night.

    What’s next in IA? Apparently it’s too soon to start with Maud. But there has been a ton of Kate lately. Then again we could go back to Hugh or Aurelia/Julie. I am pretty sure Derek meant the whole “Be ware of what you wish for”. I think I would be ok if he actually came back, kicked Ascanio were it hurt and took his desires away.

    I am a bit scared that a new series with Nick starts before I get to learn that secret about Maud that you taunted us with. Not cool Mod R. So not cool. I would hex you if I new how to unlock my inner power ;p

    Secondly, my guesses.
    1. Older teenage Jack from Steel’s Edge (I think I have the right steel)
    2. I have absolutely no clue. I originally thought, with the bee and the pollen, Applebee’s, but the bulldogs threw me.
    3. I’ve never seen her name written out, so I’m gonna go with Aunt B, though I guess it could be Bea…
    Off to check the answers! This was fun!!

    • Damn it!! It was Bug? I missed Bug? I love Bug!! It all makes so much sense now! The bulldogs really were touching something off in my brain, but I kept thinking bulldogs in the navy, and that just wasn’t working.
      Still fun, though! Loved it!! This could be a thing, I’m just saying.

  86. #1 is tricky because it sounds like a young boudha but I remember the scene. #2 I got because of the second pic – the only bulldog I know in house Andrews. #3 stumped me until the other answers reminded me. Great challenge.

  89. I had no trouble with #1–Jack all the way. The Edge series was my first taste of Ilona Andrews books and I reread those every few years. I only jumped into the Innkeeper series when I recognized the adult versions of Jack and George at Bahachar (not sure of spelling as I’m an audio junkie).
    Needed help on #2 because once I saw the bee I was thinking Aunt Bea and seeing the tea cup I got lost in Innkeeper and all the cups with cats and certainly wasn’t thinking of Hidden Legacy. Lotsa books in my head and too many years and too much info nowadays to manage a quiz. Thankfully Aunt Bea was in the quiz eventually. Her death is and always will be super tragic—long and painful.

    I’ve wondered for a long while now, maybe you could help answer my question. Is Roland’s name taken from King Lear, the Dark Tower, or someplace else. Hopefully somewhere that can be revealed.
    I’ll try to find your answer here again. I’m just not good with this social media type stuff.
