The Inheritance Cover Reveal

Blog, The Inheritance POST A COMMENT July 28, 2025 by Ilona

::waves:: Happy Monday!

Behold the gorgeous cover for the Inheritance by Candice Slater. Please click to enlarge. It is very fun enlarged because you can see all the different elements Candice put into it. The actual painting is much larger, so we all zoomed in on it and scoured it for the little details. Candice is ridiculously talented. We will see about including it somewhere into something, because it is so pretty.

While we are on the subject: if you like this style and would like to hire Candice Slater, absolutely do it. Not only she is skilled and talented, but everything was on time on a ridiculously tight schedule. Incredible artist and a fantastic creative partner. Clicking on her name above will lead to her website.

Oh, and the back cover for the printed edition.

What Is It?

THE INHERITANCE get the caps treatment, because it has officially crossed into novel territory. It is almost 75,000 words long, which puts it into the same category as CLEAN SWEEP and MAGIC CLAIMS.

THE INHERITANCE will have a sequel. It was meant to be a stand alone, but we ended up with the origin story instead. Not the plan. Not the plan at all, but it is what it is.

THE INHERITANCE is connected to one of our other series, and at least one of the characters from THE INHERITANCE will be featured in the final duology.

THE INHERITANCE will feature at least 8 illustrations from Candice Slater. They will be rendered black and white on Kindle or other devices that do not have color capabilities and in color on the devices that do like Kindle Colorsmart, phones, andtablets that are not dedicated ereaders. The print edition art will likely be black and white. There are no plans for an illustrated special edition at this time. We will likely do that when we have a sequel finished and bundle them.

When Is It?

THE INHERITANCE was sent to our copyeditor and she expects to have it back to us this Friday. We will need to implement changes and respond to her queries which will take us 2-3 days.

There will be no preorder. We are hoping for the publication date of Friday, August 8th. This is a soft date, ebook only. Print will take a couple of days to pop up for sale because it is processed differently. Audio will take a few weeks. It’s a much longer process.

Ebook – hopefully Friday August 8th. There might be unforeseen delays for some reason, so it could be pushed to the beginning of next week, but the goal is Friday.

Print – shortly following the ebook. It will be POD with horrible pricing. We are sorry, but we must make at least $1 per print book.

Audio – we are delighted to announce that THE INHERITANCE will feature a dual POV. Ada’s parts will be voiced by Hillary Huber, who voices older Kate in Magic Tides and Magic Claims. Elias’s parts will be voice by James Konicek, who performs as Mahon in Graphic Audio Kate Daniels series.

Both Hillary and James have very full calendars, and we are incredibly fortunate to work with them. Because we blew past our original audio date – deadlines do not make a whistling sound as they fly by – we are now waiting for the slot to open up in their calendar. That means that the audio will arrive in a few weeks to a few months time period. The contracts are signed; there will be an audio; we just cannot give you a firm date.

Where Is It?

THE INHERITANCE will be available across all of the usual retailers and, if things go well, directly from our website. More to come later. Please watch the blog for announcements.

Questions collected by Mod R

How much of the book have we seen as serial already?

It’s hard to say, because we added scenes, but about 90-95% was posted on the blog.

Backseat Driver edit from Mod R: Ilona’s being very conservative here. We’ve seen about 60k words and the developmental edit brought the manuscript to 73k. So we haven’t seen about 18% of the story … and copy edits are still to come! We’re getting a Horde feast on the 8th! Squeee, more to devour devour devour!

Will it definitely have a sequel? Also timing of sequel?

Yes on at least one more. Because THE INHERITANCE was never meant to be a novel, we do not have any idea when we can get to the sequel. Hopefully soonish.

Did you always plan on them not meeting?

Why do you think they are not meeting? Wait for the book.

Did you plan on Elias not having such a big part of the narrative?

Do you remember Magic Bites? People kept asking, “Why, oh why do you have the Beast Lord in this book?”

Can we pay for an unfinished, unedited, unillustrated version?

No! Absolutely not. It comes out in two weeks. Our prose is not golden, and it requires multiple edits.

There was a comment that said you wrote Ada because she showed up in Hugh’s story and “wouldn’t leave you alone.”

Look, I know other authors sometimes make it sound as if they have no power over their characters or the characters made them do something. That is usually a shorthand for describing inspiration. It’s very hard to convey how inspiration works.

The characters don’t make us do anything. They are figments of our imagination. We could have forced Ada’s story to be a novella. We didn’t because quality controls kicked in.

Imagine you are cleaning the house because company is coming over. You picked up most of the clutter, the house looks decent, but you didn’t vacuum. It looks kind of okay without vacuuming, but you know you haven’t done it. You know it’s dirty.

Writing is a little bit like that. You know when a scene is missing or a character isn’t developed properly because you wrote too small. Eventually you give up and vacuum the floor, because you are a professional and you don’t want to put out half-baked stuff.

Ada never showed up in the Hugh story. I think the confusion here came from the fact that at some point I mentioned that we discussed Hugh, realized that it is completely unsuited for serialization, and we had an idea for a novella – stop laughing – that would make a much better serial. Serials do best with a very specific structure: action-packed scenes, limited character cast, a relatively straight-forward plot. Otherwise people get confused and forget who was who and why they were in the narrative.

When will the Inheritance posts be archived?

They will stay up until you can purchase the book.

The release Zoom chat?

Ehhh. Do you want one? Let us know.

Thank you once again for reading the serial with us! We have to go and work on some proofreader queries for This Kingdom, but fear not, we will try to keep you entertained with something once or twice a week.

Super excited for August 8th. Thank you for the update!

I also miss Hugh. When I find myself wondering about his story, I try to sing to myself.

“I ain’t missing Hugh at all (missing Hugh)
              Since Hughs been gone away
I ain’t missing Hugh (missing Hugh)
No matter, what my hordes say (missing Hugh)”

Oh Nani, you’re in for a treat! Have you read the Kate Daniels series yet? Hugh is first introduced there and I recommend starting there, but it IS a 10 book series. One of the absolute best, in my opinion. The first Kate book is Magic Bites. If you want to skip ahead to Hugh’s book it’s called Iron Magic. Enjoy! A little jealous since I almost wish I could read them all again for the first time. *sigh*

Also, as my fellow Book-Devouring-Horde-ees have pointed out, Hugh is AWESOME. However, true to his life story, and the Kate Daniels world being slightly apocalyptic, it is not always for the faint of heart. I found that on some days, when I crave comfort read, the best medicine is the Innkeeper Series (especially Maud’s books and the latest one); as well as the Hidden Legacy Series by Ilona Andrews / House Andrews 🙂 .

    • Samantha says

      July 28, 2025 at 10:28 am

Hugh is the warlord of doom in the Kate Daniels series. He gets justice and redemption opportunities in “Iron Covenant” a spinoff that is well worth diving into as it stands alone nicely. Starts with “Iron and Magic” but there have been whispers of a second book worth delicious anticipation. Enjoy.

    • Renee says

      July 28, 2025 at 10:29 am

This is Hugh d’Ambray, the Kate Daniels series. Also “Iron Covenant”. Under the Our books, select Iron Covenant to read a little about Hugh.

    • Irene says

      July 28, 2025 at 10:57 am

Hugh was a bad guy in the Kate Daniels series and his “story” was announced on this site as an April Fools joke! But the joke backfired! The BDH wants what it wants, so IA developed a redemption story for him. 😄

    • Heather says

      July 29, 2025 at 7:02 am

For the full Hugh experience (and I strongly recommend the full Hugh experience because the payoff is worth the investment), start with the Kate Daniels series, then Iron and Magic- first book of Iron Covenant-which is Hugh’s and Elara’s first book, and then Magic Triumphs and Blood Heir and the Wilmington Years for future Hugh.

If spoilers don’t bother you, you can jump straight into Iron and Magic.

Wow! The 8th?!? I was prepping myself for September because I know you guys have soooo much going on. That is amazing! Thank you!!!

The cover is gorgeous! You have knocked it out of the park again by finding a knock-it-out-of-the-park talent. You two are so good at that.

I’m hearing Mahon in my head and matching that up with my image of Elias. Yea, that’ll work. That’ll work nicely.

    Back to pat!ently wa!t!ng CHALANTLY!

Oh and my bets on the cross-over characters:
Cookie – feels like equivalent age to Jovo
      George – ’cause it’s George
      Klaus – Adhal connection?
Maude – ’cause I too think Ada and Maude would be BFFs

      What fun!!

        The other way around 🙂

The “final duology” is Innkeeper. So there will be an Inheritance cameo in the Innkeeper series.

        July 28, 2025 at 11:43 am

Yippee! The wedding is a given considering Gertrude Hunt now has a door to Daesyn. Oh what fun that will be. Helen can see her Aunt Dina and Uncle Sean more often. Arland can get his “respite” on Earth with Maud. Other fun adventures await.

Ah, Mod R, you are the apprentice to Gordon, Master of Reveals. 😂

        • Beth says

          July 28, 2025 at 5:12 pm

While that door will make visiting much easier, can you imagine the trouble it will be with Helen? ‘Where’s Helen? I thought she was with you.’ They couldn’t keep track of her completely without an open door to another planet. Off she’ll go visiting the Inn and all the inhabitants.

The Author Overlords have mentioned before that we are coming to the end of the InnKeeper parent story arc, then next one being from Maud’s POV again. I assume with the Lees having a crossover here, as well as an invitation to Baha-Char from Jovo, that they mean we will see Ada (and Bear and Elias) in those last two books.

      • Anna says

        July 28, 2025 at 1:04 pm

Somehow I am not surprised by a “duology” ending the Innkeeper Chronicles. After all, a novella has grown before our eyes into a novel… stands to reason that a novel will grow into two ! And they will both be welcome

    • Oona says

      July 28, 2025 at 6:55 pm

Inheritance connected to Innkeeper. Got it. Baha Char check. Its the other bit that’s not clear to me? Are we talking about an Innkeeper character showing up in Inheritance or the other way round? OR are we talking about Klaus in his role as Arbiter? And that bit in Maud’s and Arland’s book on the wedding – we have to big, no bigger! Because big bad evil Mukama and the something plot to disrupt the Vampires and crush them? Hum. Pondering. Or some other thing/one the Arbiters are taking on…

      • Moderator R says

          July 30, 2025 at 12:47 am

Hmm, I’m imagining a lovely invitation sent to Ada for a stay at the Inn, where she will meet up with Jovo and George and Klaus (because Ada will be playing a big role in securing her multiverse Earth as she is needed as Sadrin…) Hmm the possibilities are delicious. And more books…yay!! The adventures continue. Thank you HA for enriching our lives with story! Can’t wait to read the new releases immediately ahead and future tomes promised to horde.

It sounds like retirement is a long ways off with the plans for more books (YES! applause!!!! )
Seriously, you will have to give us several years warning ;)) if you are seriously considering it. Do authors really retire? Not seriously worrying about this, but curious…
May HA be blessed with vivid and enduring creativity for as long as they both wish to write… and have good health and happiness!

        • Ilyana says

          July 31, 2025 at 1:14 am

Since the Dina & Sean first encountered the corrupted Adhal in Baha-Char, Jovo will have noticed the similarity of the grey devourer shroud to the corruption clothing the Adhal (Baha-Char seems to thrive on gossip too). So maybe Jovo will share that info with Dina/Sean/Klaus/Maud in the coming Innkeeper duology. (smiley)

          • Moderator R says

            July 31, 2025 at 2:21 am

Jovo was not with them in Baha-char, we don’t know if he even knows Dina and Sean 🙂 . He is not from Clan Nuan, who is the clan closer to our intrepid innkeepers.

First, thanks for this update. The cover art looks great! I will be ordering one ebook version, two POD print versions (one for myself and one for a family member) despite the “horrible pricing” and the audio book (whenever it is released). And will no doubt repeat for the sequel whatever year it appears. And if there is a special edition then — I will have two of that too.

More importantly, your post has left one major question unanswered: Did Jeanine Frost suffer any injuries?

    1. When you started writing and posting “The Inheritance”, did you tell Jeanine Frost that it was a “short one-off stand-alone novella”? And if so, has she managed to pick herself up off the ground yet after falling over howling with laughter?

    2. Then, when you confessed to her that it was actually now a full-blown novel and was going to have at least one sequel — did she fall down laughing hysterically again?

Asking for a friend … called The BDH…

I pretty much knew after the 6th installment that you were never going to make it short, or a one-off. The way you write is just so rich and detailed that the novella is pretty much not your best format because your worlds are larger and more realized. Not that you haven’t done novella-length things, but they always feel like they are/could be part of a much larger narrative.

Ok, I know I am dense. What are the other animals on the Cover? I assume they were all mentioned in the book, but they do not look close to how I imaged any of them, so am confused.

    Thanks

We can see the stalkers corpses and the goat-like animals the size of a small deer that the stalkers eat. Also on the right the fresco art of the lees that Ada comes across 🙂

    Yeay for INHERITANCE! *happy dance*

I am just a bit confused about the release date. Aren’t books normally published on a tuesday for a better shot a bestseller lists? Or os it that you don’t expect it to hit any lists/ expect it to hit other lists so we get to enjoy the book earlier?

It’s only tradition really, not law 🙂

Selling directly on the website will probably eat into those chart numbers because it won’t be reported sales.

So, quick quesion: should we buy directly, then – or from a retailer?! I personally prefer to buy directly, if possible, but I will bow to your industry knowledge?

        Oh, and of course:
        HEARTFELT THANKS TO EVERYONE!📖📖📖

However is more comfortable, as usual 🙂 If you prefer directly, please buy directly.

The only ask is that we do not pirate it 🙂

Gorgeous cover! Lovely present for my birthday week!
Some time early this morning my cats took out a wool dryer ball in the dinning room. It reminded me of when Ada and Bear were fighting the wasps. It was a massacre. Literally found bits of it all over the dining room, living room and kitchen. Bet it was sorry it left the dryer.

That cover is fabulous, I love the way Ada and Bear are looking at each other, and as you say there are so many details I suspect I’ll need to reread to get them all. I’m amazed we’ll be getting the whole book so soon, thank you so much, it’s always good to have future pleasures to look forward to.

Please tell us you will be having a few days off somewhere in the near future after all the work you’ve been doing you will need it as well as deserve it!
