The Plural Of Beef

Admin, Blog, Writing 19 Comments | POST A COMMENT September 15, 2026 by Ilona

Me: Hey, sorry to bother you.

Grace Draven: No problem. What’s up?

Me: Do you know what chevon is?

Grace: … No. Never heard that before. It sounds French. What is it?

Me: Goat meat.

Grace: Huh.

Me: Apparently, it’s chevon, except if you are in India or Pakistan where it is called mutton for cultural reasons. You are the foodiest person I know, so I figured if you didn’t know it, nobody else would.

Grace: It says here “Chevon is a coined culinary word created in 1922 by a trade association as a blend of the French word chèvre (goat) and the ending of mutton.”

Me: Yep.

Grace: How are you?

Me: grunt.

Grace: You can do it. It will be okay.

I am not quite sure I can do it, actually. We are crash editing Maggie 2 to get it under the deadline, so it doesn’t have to be bumped back. It’s been 12 hour days back to back for a month now. It’s a very long book. I broke out the Fortnum & Mason Christmas tea that Mod R sends me for Christmas. And I put honey in it, which I cannot do because prediabetes.

Parallel to that, we are finishing up the vellum orders. As of right now, we have 267 orders to go. The end is in sight. We had numerous printer-related delays, which will not happen again, because 3,000 orders is too many. From now on, we will do small merch drops of 1,000 sets at a time. When they sell out, they sell out.

Behind on everything otherwise. Hoping to get to some kind of place once the edit is done. Also I almost got the flu. It’s going around and I had a couple of miserable days with some fever, but I think I might have fought it off. Knock on wood, cannot get sick right now.

Thank you for your patience with us.

PS. The plural of beef is beeves.

PPS. ::Channeling Maggie from Maggie 2:: And one more thing: Guys, if your vellum arrived damaged, let us know. We will replace. Please email to the store address: store@ilona-andrews.com. Mod R cannot help you.

PPPS: Experts found, thank you!

Good luck and sending good vibes to you guys!
I did not know that tidbit about goat meat. And its funny that my lunch today was left over curry goat with basmati rice from my daughters b/day dinner last night.

Lemon juice shots – won’t stop the viruses going around, but will soothe your throat. Also hot lemon, if you need a change from tea. (My mother called it Irish farm medicine – her mother grew up on a farm in Eire.)
The germs are wicked this fall – they got a power boost from all the crazy heat and humidity!! Be careful out there!!

I have a degree in astrophysics and can review your magical treatise. However, the contact form says it’s only for technical difficulties? There’s no Subject line to put Electron Cloud in. Please let me know how I can help.

I’ve never wanted to be a quantum physicist before today. (I’m not) 😄

Also, if you raise beef (at least in Iowa, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say in the US Midwest), the plural form of beef is beef. I’m wondering if the only people who use beeves also have a butler named Jeeves? 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for the update! I hope you feel better and get as much done as you need to in the time that you need it done by! 🤗

That’s because it’s French. They have a committee designated to maintain the purity of the language so they have to invent a french term anytime they’re in danger of borrowing a word. Le hot dog is pas très classe. (and that exhausts my French for the day.

    Beeves😂 I need that in a sentence!!

Surely one spoon of honey in your tea is ok when the occasion calls for it!! And the BDH wants you healthy and happy so you can keep writing our favourite things ❤️ Take care of yourself!

Hang in there! I feel your pain. It’s been crazy and stupid with a certain federal agency. It’s raining hospital reports lately. They were supposed to be available last month, but due to errors on the reports sent out to the hospitals by the agency, the agency pushed all the reports back to September. They have to be out before October 1. I had to validate what I can to make sure the results were correct. It’s been a marathon.

Beeves is the plural for beef? Uh, I always thought the plural form was beef. I was raised in rural Missouri, and that’s what was used no matter the form of English. Learn something new on that. 🧐🤷‍♀️
