Vellum Updates and a Bribe Giveaway

We will start with a brief vellum update and then switch to the giveaway. I am bribing you.

Some people saw me testing things on Facebook this morning, and I wanted to explain it before any misunderstandings occured.

It’s our first time printing vellum so we made some decisions that slightly complicated our life.

Our original vellum, the one that is advertised in image below is printed on 40lb vellum. It’s thicker, the colors are brighter, and it is exactly 6×9 so it fits into US hardcover.

It fits in the book, but it is thicker and it is a bit of struggle to make it stay. It should have been printed slightly smaller.

We have now tried 5 different printers. At some point, I invited Grace Draven to the house to get unbiased opinions.

First, we dropped the white border and settled on the size that would fit both UK and US hardcovers.

Next we found a thinner vellum at 28 lbs that still shows the beautiful colors but is much thinner and lays better in the book.

We have one more batch coming to us before finalizing the no-border vellum. After that, the no-border vellum will be available as a separate product. We don’t want to throw it out there before we have pictures to show you.

We would like to give you options at the fulfillment.

  • You can choose to stay with the original vellum with white border. We printed a ton of it and we have it in stock.
  • You can switch to the no-white-border version at no additional charge. It is a one for one swap.
  • And those of you who would like to get both, border and no-border, will be able to grab a set of no-border vellum at a discount. We will just stuff it into the same envelope, saving you on shipping. The add-on pack will be available only with a regular order.

Once we have finalized this second variant, we will send you an email through the store explaining how to choose your options. If you run into trouble, please email us and we will sort it.

A little warning about the fulfillment: we expect it to take several weeks. We have in excess of 2,000 orders. Kid 2 is stuffing maps into the envelopes as we speak. We even put Rito to work.

    She like several of your characters shows that power and love can show up in the most surprising and indomitable ways. Also being an older woman can mean expanding not just shrinking and becoming invisible.

    My favorite Inn Keeper character is the house, Gertrude. How clever and cool to have the house be a sentient partner that protects and supports Dina!

  22. Tough choice, love all the characters. Going with Maude today because she kicks arse. I think my favorite character changes daily because they are all amazing!

  26. My fave character has to be Dina! I mean she’s the main character for a reason right? I love that she’s a bad-ass but also empathetic and sincere. She’s genuinely a kind person but firm with boundaries too, rather than letting people walk all over her. She has a very good balance between the two traits, which I love.

  27. Nuan Cee is my favorite character, any time he is on the page or speaking during the audio book I know something interesting is about to happen! Fuzzy and dangerously clever.

  29. Innkeeper has so many good characters! I think its got to be Dina though, anyone else I picked would be getting weighted extra for having less page time, but I’m always happy to have Dina’s POV as the primary.

  31. My favorite-is the INN itself-Getrude Hunt! I love the idea of a sentient house who is a partner to the innkeepers!

  34. Beast. Beast is my favorite Innkeeper character. Beast has her priorities straight: protect those you love, eat yummy things, enjoy a good nap.

    Ilemina is a close second. She rose above tough beginnings to make something great with her life, found love, wants her family to be happy, and spoils her soon-to-be grand kiddo as a grandma should.

  35. Asking for my favorite character in this series is like asking me to pick a favorite hair on my head there are too many to choose from! From the Hiru to the Koo-ko there’s just so much to love. But if I have to choose it’s Sophie. Getting to see the culmination of her and George’s story *chef’s kiss*

She is just immensely relatable, a force to be reckoned with, kind & wicked smart, talented while putting in the work, passionate and also fun. I feel like if I ever stayed at any B&B in Texas ever, I would look for and almost find her. She is tangible to me.

She’s a beautiful woman in her 60s and dresses elegantly, with a cool as heck earring. I want to be her when I grow up! 🙂

She is a regular earth human, with no inkling of the strange galactic goings-on in her neighborhood, but she still kicked butt at Costco and did not take any BS from her husband OR from Dina. I hope she’ll have a role to play in later installments! Could the Marais kids play with Helen perhaps?

  92. One of my favorites, because really, it is so hard to choose just one is Caldenia. She is feisty and knows exactly who she is, and unapologetic about it!

  94. Maud – she has fought for everything she’s gotten and taken too much shit from Arland’s mom.

    Big question, will Orro do the whole wedding feast or just the cake??? Vampire bakers are easily as competitive as Pack bakers.

  95. As so many of us have said, I love all the Innkeeper characters, but the one I think about most often is Gertrude Hunt. So loyal and nurturing, and yet so very mysterious still to this day. Still very much hoping that game comes about someday!

  143. I haven’t read the Innkeeper Chronicles yet—I just discovered Ilona Andrews this year and have been making my way through their other series, which have been so much fun! Based on everything I’ve heard, I have a feeling Dina will be my favorite character. She seems like another strong, capable female lead, which is one of the things I love most about Ilona Andrews’ books. And the fact that she has a dog is definitely a bonus! 😊

  146. I actually loved Officer Marais (eventually). I was so prepared to dislike him because boooo annoying nosy cop who complicates everyone’s life. But I love that they made him just an upstanding dude who wants to keep the peace by enforcing the rules that keep everyone safe. Including intergalactic rules. Arland is a close second!

    Picking a favorite character is a tough job; Dina came to mind first. Then after mulling it over, I really like the way she has grown into the innkeeper role over the series – no matter what gets thrown at her, she figures out a way to handle it.

      I’ve been holding off to see if I can order Maggie with the rest of the vellum.

      • For now, the Maggie art can only be purchased from Luisa Preissler.

        I am not sure on exact dates due to fulfilment, House Andrews will announce! But if there’s a break, it’s likely to be a short one 🙂

  228. So I love Dina so much! Her calming personality and very focused mentality is incredible! When I was reading these, I found myself comparing my mentality to Dina’s when I had the realization that I’m not Dina, I’m Maud. I guess I’m a bit too hot headed.

  230. My favorite character is Orro because he is such a dramatically inclined character. His “Just Go” line with the accompanying dramatic gestures feels so Shakespearean. He’s a joy to read about and so tenacious about his cooking.

    My husband’s favorite character would have to be Maud because anytime he rereads the series, he ALWAYS starts with “Sweep of the Blade”.

  232. Maud is my favorite character. She is a strong and resilient character and I love her interactions with her daughter and Arland. A close second would be Nuan Cee and their entire clan.

  233. Never thought I would say this, but Nuan Cee is my favorite. Sure he is a ruthless businessman and negotiator, but he fiercely defended his peoples rights on Nexus, he saved Helen, he adores Maude and Dina and family is always first in his mind and heart. Also we tend to forget… he is just as cute as all the other little Lees.

  243. I’m not sure if she counts, but my favorite character is Helen Demille. I come to this conclusion because Dina and Maud are tied for my second favorite characters and I trust them and their feelings on other characters.

    All three of Helen’s children are so strong, brave, and driven and still searching for her and Gerard. While all the other Innkeepers seem to have an awe for Gerard, and I in no way downplay him in this, I think Helen is the binding force of their family.

    Their children have traversed the known galaxy searching for them and Dina and Klaus’s feelings of desperation and loss broke through even the horrors of Nexus and made warring species feel a need to keep an eye out for the Demilles too. There is so much love there. Dina and Maud both reminisce about their father, but I so enjoy the moments they see their mother in themselves, both physically and emotionally. How they are so proud of showing off “Mom’s Take-Care”, or how Maud named her daughter Helen even with her concerns that some vampires might take issue with her being half human. They are so proud of their mother, and, I think, baby Helen is the ultimate sign that the sisters know their mom is a sweet, loving, bad-ass of a woman. I can’t wait to officially meet her because I love her just from the glimpses we’ve already had.

  264. My favorite is Gaston, in Sweep of the Heart. I realize, he is a cross-over character from the Edge series but he presents himself with such energy and brio, he is simply irresistable.

  268. Omgosh, just one favorite character? I would have to go with Caldenia. She has been thrown so many curveballs in life and has come out with grace and humor. Dina, herself is quite a badass in her own regard though. There are so many awesome characters in this series that it is so hard to choose just one.

  301. I love all the Innkeeper characters, but my favorite is Dina. The way she deals with all the craziness while still keeping the compact intact gives me hope that wiser heads will prevail in our own reality.

  320. From the very first, Dina is the epitome of sweet-tea southern. Gracious with a spine of steel. She just has no quit in her. My fave character by far.

  322. Orro is my fav, although I honestly love all of them. I order my copy when the announcement was dropped and just got it this week. SO BEAUTIFUL! I emailed Subterranean and asked if Vol 2 would be reissued as well. I had a chance to get volume 2 (was available for a bit as out of print), but I didn’t want vol 2 without vol 1. I am kicking myself now. Maybe if the BDH raised our voices we can get vol 2 reprinted too?

  331. All the characters in the Innkeeper series are fantastic, Dina’s family, Sean’s family, Arlands family, space chickens, hoarde, vampires, space fish, giant hedgehogs, choosing one is definitely hard. But without Dina there would be no Gertrude Hunt, so I definitely have to say Dina.

  333. This is hard for me. I adore Cookie, for cuteness and getting things, and Caldenia ,for her problem solving approach. Maud is determined and resolute! But my favorite has to be Helen for ripper cushions and her resiliency!

  338. It’s pretty much impossible to pick just one character. Favorite series? Easy, Innkeepers; favorite character from my favorite series? Umm, all of them? But since we have to choose- Maud. Sweep of the Blade is my comfort re-read.

  339. My favorite character is Maud. The scene in Sweep of the Blade where she meets with the merchants absolutely enchants me every time. Her memories of the times with her parents at Baha-Char and her realization of what is really going on is so well written. And Arland’s appearance at the end of the scene just caps it.

  409. I love Orro! His storyline really resonates with me. In the beginning when Dina finds him, he is in a very low place–bitter, angry, sorrowful. However, over the course of the story, he comes to realize his own worth, not just as a chef but as a person.

  437. This sounds like a chorus, doesn’t it? I love many of the characters in Innkeeper Chronicles, it’s my favorite of all your works. But I think Dina remains my favorite character.

    She’s the soul of an innkeeper, what the extended group essentially hopes will be produced, a human who can manipulate magic and form a tight bond with her inn.

    And she cares. She has created a real haven for individuals who have nowhere else to go. She has the justice gene. She’s just neurodiverse enough that her empathy is extreme, but her inn won’t let her go too far, and she’s fortunate enough to have found a rock solid guy to share her life and her life’s work.

    I could talk about Innkeeper characters at length, but I will let the horde handle it. I will just keep reading new Innkeeper tales. And reviewing and recommending them. And re-reading them.

  476. Caldenia. She’s smart and wise enough to keep her opinions in check when necessary. Shes also confident in her power and uses that (with her previous reputation) to get what she needs from people but still through the lens of staying out of trouble.

    The way he manages retrieving the Archivarius from the Muckrats had me in giggling fits! And his sorrow at having to give them Dina’s left sneaker! I loved him in Sweep in Peace and was delighted with his character growth in One Fell Sweep.
