  1. I think Conlan’s and Kate’s full names have been used, but I don’t recall Curran’s middle name being mentioned.

    • I just reread the entire series, afaik Curran’s middle name is not mentioned. I just double-checked the wedding vows, and it wasn’t there either. Conlan’s middle name is given as Dilmun though.

I had written to your agent asking if you could make up a middle name for him since they intend on naming their son Curran and can’t come up with a middle name. I thought it was pretty cool this showed up on this blog. made me come in here and look for it! So come on Ilona Andrews give us some ideas!

  5. I just scanned all my digital copies for “Lennart” thinking if someone said his full name they would include his last (easier than searching through 100’s and 1000’s of “Curran’s”.)

    I can’t find any mention of his middle name. I don’t have the novella’s in my digital library though. I also checked Iron and Magic and Blood Heir.

    I found Conlan’s though which is Dilmun. Not sure if that’s what you were thinking instead.

    can’t imagine a scene official enough where it would have been mentioned.

    it’s not like there’s a lot of childhood flashbacks to a full name call out by a parent.

      I did really enjoy rereading Roman’s wedding speech and “I don’t do doves” 😀 . How I love that man!

          • I am torn between pining for a further stage in the Hugh Elara books or a side book on Roman. Honestly id squee over either but Roman is hot, bad to the bone, hilarious, and a kind dude off hours. He is like….. everything!!!

        • He’s an evil priest. Who is going to make fun of an evil priest and not get eaten by some critter other than his god? Dude could wear those PJs, watch the Great British Bakeoff, and let kids make his hair into braided pony mane with sparkles and ribbons without a dent to masculinity.

          I could see him feeling sad the shapeshifters got to babysit the kids more (evil priest) but then being asked once, kids had too good of a time around his lair’s perimeter defenses, and the monsters in the yard were glad to leave it to the shapeshifters.

    Conlan was Curran’s father’s name. Dilman is the middle name Erra gave Conlan as a protection.

    Not even Mahon three named Curran, and I had hoped Martha would do it at one point but she didn’t.

    • we in New Zealand say the full name but we can also say Morella Jaime myy daughters name means ‘ wanted child I Love’ or her nick name that I only call her lally bar moo moo chew chew train… yes I’m that mum

    • yeah this was my guess that Martha Three named him during the fight with Mahon but no such luck!

  9. it’s interesting to think of, three naming a person is usually a move of authority, like a parent to a child. but with Curran though he has adopted parents, because he was beast Lord they weren’t in authority over him so didn’t seem to play that card with him.
    I thought it had been said some where… did Kate pull it out when he was being frustrating?

      • +1 Adoptive parents are parents. Found family is family. Three-naming doesn’t require a blood relationship.

        • However, he already had a name when they found him. If he had been adopted as a baby then Martha would have definitely given him a middle name.

  14. Hmm. I looked at the text with the marriage invitation that Julie reads in Magic Binds and it only says Curran Lennart there too. I really do remember seeing it somewhere though. I will have to think some more

  20. Did you check your deleted scenes/rewrites? Maybe you wrote it once but it didn’t make it into a final version that non-alpha and -beta readers saw? We all remember Roman’s Eeyore pajamas from a snippet, even though they didn’t make the final cut in the book.

    • I’m floored. ???? It wasn’t in the book? It’s cannon in my head, so I just thought it was. ????‍♀️

    • They made a final cut in Andrea’s book. She and Rafael were “Eeyore?” after he rode up in a t-shirt and pajama bottoms when the three of them were summoned by Anepa.

      • I was talking about the wedding book, when they go to ask him to officiate and he answers the door in Eeyore pajama bottoms. Maybe that’s why it didn’t make the cut for the wedding book, because it was previously mentioned in Gunmetal Magic. (That is the ONLY title, other than Magic Triumphs, that I can remember which story it goes with. I can remember a few of the other titles, but I can’t remember which story goes with which title other than those two.)

  22. Do you have access to that fan thingy that gave background/descriptions on all the characters. I don’t remember what it was called. I looked through my bookmarks, but didn’t see it. Maybe I’m thinking of the wrong series, but I thought there was a really detailed on for KD. ????‍♀️

    • I remember the site – or rather the one they had set up for Hidden Legacy. Couldn’t say for sure if there was one for KD, but now I’m getting inklings of a page for Derek……

    • I was thinking of Wicked Scribes. I was able to find it using the Wayback Machine (seriously, I’m not joking, that’s what they named the archives), but it didn’t list a middle name. Sorry! ???? It appeared to be last updated in June of 2020 and included Magic Triumphs (#10) in the listing and info. Since it wasn’t in there, I’m voting with everyone who thought it was in a deleted scene/snippet.

      Or maybe it’s just floating around in your head and refuses to come to the surface until you’re well and truly over it and have moved on to other things! ????

      I’m going to try to attach a screenshot, if that will help in any way to narrow down your search. ????

  23. I’ve put my brain to it, and I can’t remember seeing it anywhere… Naturally, Dilmun came to me first, but that’s Conlan. Jim’s middle name came up at one point… Saiman, I think…

    I can’t remember seeing his middle name anywhere. I even went and asked my husband and he couldn’t recall seeing it either.

  29. The only place I could think of it might be used is if they get formally introduced anywhere. Like at a banquet or something where the person announces arrivals as they enter a room. (Maybe when they go overseas after the panacea?)

I no help, but just gonna throw this out there – I worked for over a decade with someone who decided to give me a middle name different from mine, and not just a version of my real middle name, but one that no letters in common with my actual middle name. so give him one now, and if anyone comes up with a different one that has been referred to, just claim it was from someone who just made it up.

    “no my middle name is not Marie, and it does not matter how many times you call me (first name) Marie, i still don’t have to acknowledge hearing you”

      • I worked with someone who gave me an entire name: Shawnella Le Blanc (I think) since he never actually wrote it down. I never really knew why, other than we used to make jokes about what it would say on our book jackets, because of course all our PhD dissertations would be best sellers – in the ‘cure for sleeplessness’ section. A few years ago we got together after having the agency closed for 20 years, and I was still Shawnella Le Blanc.

  32. I don’t remember ever seeing Curran’s middle name. It was a couple of books before we even learned his last name Lennart I believe, he was a mononym for awhile like Beyonce or Drake. If his last name was introduced earlier I apologize but I remember reading it in later books and going oh so that’s his last name! I can’t remember Kate’s middle name but I’m guessing we learned it at some point, maybe based off her mom’s name Kalina?

  48. I couldn’t find a middle name listed anywhere. I searched the KD ebooks, as well as Iron and Magic, and Magic Stars.

    I vaguely recalled maybe something in the scene where he tells Kate about his family, but it wasn’t there either.

Anyway, I came across a website (that I can’t find now, but of course I kept the pic) that said Curran should be played by Simon Baker, complete with uber sexy pic. Now I’m reading and got the Simon picture in my head!

  50. I’m thinking that because I’ve read the Curran POV to many times and seeing Gordon’s name that I automatically thought ‘Isn’t it Curran Gordon Lennart?’. Then I realized why I thought that.

  53. I checked the wedding invitation and the vows and neither had a middle name. Those would be the most obvious places for one.

  54. No recollection of a middle name for Curran.
    However I’m slightly weirded out by the coincidence of this blog post since my brothers and I were just arguing this weekend over whether middle names are a necessity or not.
    I say yes in case the child hates their forename. Our uncle and a great aunt both used their middle names instead so not exactly unprecedented to us either. Give them choices!

      You can plus up the name meaning by trying to spell something with the initials too- and there are a lot more 3 letter options than 2! ????

      • Exactly! My initials are nonsense but both my brother’s spell out actual words. This should be a thing we enforce by law – only name children so their initials spell words ????

    • Also without a middle name a lot of forms, information requests, etc. require that the person use X for their middle initial.

    • I never had a middle name, so when I got married, I decided to completely drop my maiden name. My legal name has only a first and a last name. However, the state of Texas insisted that a married woman is unable to have no middle name, so they put my maiden name on my driver’s license. I considered it at the time discrimination based on both gender and marital status. It is one of the reasons I loathed living in Texas. Thirty years later, I still get junk mail with that middle initial.

      • I live in Texas and now have my actual middle name on my license. I do not remember how I did that. Maybe with online renewal?

      • I am the only child in my family that does not have a middle name and I have spent my entire life trying to explain to total strangers why I don’t have one. They never believe me. It got to the point that I just make one up and they tell me, “Oh that’s not so bad” and wander off satisfied that they pried my deepest and darkest secret out of me. ????????‍♀️

        • My grandmother was also teased about not having a middle name as a child, so one day she made one up on the spot and just started writing that down whenever someone asked her to fill out forms. Now, if you look her up on Ancestry or other genealogical forums, there are all kinds of official government paperwork documents with the random middle name that she made up on the playground. 😉

  55. could julie have mentioned it when she was going over her full name at 1 point before they got married so it was a mile long. it might have been the short story when she was helping at the new school.

  56. there a few places i can think of when they mentioned it . when he acquired the merc guild, the genie arc, or possibly the colosium. other than those maybe mentioned on the wolf island place in europe. i feel like if he had one kate would have already teased him about it though.

  61. In the military if you don’t have a middle name they give you one “NMI” (No Middle Inital).

    • My parents didn’t give me a middle name despite my mother’s having used her own middle name all her life (she despised her first name). When I was registered for public school, the registrar insisted on putting “N” or “NMI” into the middle name position. Caused all kinds of confusion later on. I always wanted some idiot to aske me how “NMI” was pronounced so I could tell them “ENEMY”!!!!

    • I work at a national lab and for a while, if you didn’t have a middle name, your badge got printed with a couple of extra characters – so John Smith showed up as

      Smith, John ).

      We teased our coworkers and said they were sad one-eyed emojis!

  62. I have a vague recollection of “Lennart” as a last name first being revealed in a Q&A either live or via a video: maybe the middle name was revealed then too? It’s also possible that there was discussion of the Curran’s name in one of these Q&A type venues and the middle name was given as well, and the last name just stuck with me from that source.

    • I seem to remember that somehow there was some speculation at to what Curran’s full name was and either Ilona or Gordon responded that you had already decided on a full name and it was Curran ? Lennart.

      It’s entirely possible I’m misremembering…

  64. I thought there was a wedding invitation/notice in one of the books for Kate & Curran on one of the end pages that had their full names.

  65. I think he is a NMI kinda guy, or at least his parents were. The way Curran described his father struck me as a guy who wouldn’t be into 3 names for his kid. I think it sounds better for Curran Lennart to have just a first and last name – very spare and lean.

    I also did a search, blog only and then wider on initials! There is no mention of Currans initials in the blog or book.

    After much searching my brain delivered me Curran Mahon Lennart but I can’t find anything to support that ????????‍♀️.

    • Maybe it is a Mandela Effect but even if it isn’t correct, “Curran Mahon Lennart” sure sounds like it should be correct.

  69. Easiest way to solve is to give him a “new” middle name. Only a few seconds later poeple will correct you.

    Granted, I could be confusing it with something else too.

    1. Write a KD world story and make up a random middle name for Curran
    2. Publish aforementioned story
    3. Wait for the pedants to write in with Curran’s correct name 🙂

  74. I have been reading all books, POVS, snippets and more.
    I am pretty sure there are no middle name. I remember no scene where a middle name is mentioned, and my brain normally keep track of stuff like that.
    If there was one, the need for a «formal aproach» as like several of the alphas had would have made sure the name was in use. At least on documents.
    So if this name exsist, it is om a umåublished draft. I would look in the chest.
    I think he really don’t need one, by the way. Would be strange to introducd it now. Unless it’s a name he really hate.

  75. I don’t know, but are you aware that curran is the word for carrot in Gàidhlig? It can also mean parsnip, especially if followed by ‘geal’ (white), so I’m kind of hoping his middle name is either Geal or Dearg (red/orange – the traditional way to specify that the curran was a carrot rather than a parsnip, before carrots became more popular)

  77. FYI: I am adopted and I have no middle nane. It was always a pain filling out official papers and a puzzle to me. Was I just half a child? They couldn’t think of a middle name? Didn’t expect me to need one?

    • Being adopted doesn’t make you half and neither does the absence of a middle name. You are a complete & whole person worthy of being here just like the trees and the stars -and if you feel a void in your life, you have the option of choosing a middle name that you like.

      (There are many in the BDH saddled with unfortunate middle names that envy you right now because having a blank space is better than having to fill it in with something cringy.)

      Is there a name that resonates with you? Or a word that has special significance? You could use that word… I just looked up the word ‘treasure’. In Swahili it is ‘Hazina’, in Bengali its ‘Tahana’, in Hindi it is ‘Khajaana’, in Italian ‘Tesoro’, in Japanese it is ‘Takara’… All I’m saying it to please treasure yourself and by doing so you will teach others to treasure you too, no middle name required.

    • I have no middle name and neither do any of my younger 3 sisters because our parents told us when we got married the husband’s name would be our last name and our maiden name would be our middle name.
      Ah, smell the patriarchy!
      Anyway, I and the next oldest sister fooled them by never getting married so no middle name it is.

        I have two sisters who did not take their husband’s name Another sister who reverted back to her first husband’s name after her 2nd divorce because it was her children’s surname, and finally…
        My daughter is getting married to a man with a hyphenated name.
        She is currently in the Vet-med program and had always stated she would not change her name, She worked to hard under her current name and it would have a Dr. in front of it.
        He has stated he will be taking her name when they are married. Dude is 6’2 and a commercial diver. No fragile masculinity in the guy. ????

        • My ex went along with SSA changing both of us to hyphenated last name (mine first then his). At divorce I went back to maiden name but he kept both (and of course kids now have both). But to add insult to injury our poor first son has two middle names as well as two last names. I say let Curran have No Middle Name (or Initial).

    • I know quite a few people with no middle name, so you’re not alone. I have the letter K as my whole middle name. It confuses people when they want a full middle name and I have to insist that the letter is it.

      I second @Regina when she said you can give yourself one and that it doesn’t make you less. We could offer you some suggestions, if you like? ((Hugs)) ????

    • Hallo Pamela, I have a cousin called Pamela being adopted as well but I’ve no idea if she has a middle name. But she is a whole and nice person anyway.

    • My Grandmother didn’t have a middle name (was expected to slide her maiden name there, once married. Winces), but decided young that it should have been Elizabeth, so gave herself that middle name. She ended up with two middle names. But she was happy with her chosen one plus maiden name,so it all worked out.

      Maybe you could consider that they left that spot open so you could have your own choice of middle name, since you didn’t get to make other major decisions for yourself? Not indicating any lack in you, but more as an opportunity to make your own choice.

  81. Middle names are not necessary. I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters and none of them has a middle name. I am the only one of the siblings with a middle name. My parents figured with such a long last name that middle names were unnecessary.

    If you’re looking for suggestions, I suggest Rupert.

    It could be a reference to P. atrox or Panthera leo atrox which is the american lion. I think they went extinct about 10,000 years ago.

  92. (Laughing evilly) How about this for a total brain brwaker– Lennart is his middle name and he refuses to use his LAST name because:
    1) he hated it as a kid
    2) it’s a very famous name in the Earth they live in
    3) it’s a world where magic works, and with no one knowing his full name, they can not work magic against him

    To be honest, I really think this is why he doesn’t ever use his middle name, as a form of protection.

  96. One does not need to be given a middle name at birth. You can claim one!
    My birth certificate has no middle name.
    When I was to be baptised the Priest did not think my first name – was “saintly’ enough (It translates into two different saints names depending if you are using British or French derivations) and baptized my Mary Babette. First and last time it was said, but does show up on my batismal certificate.
    However I did want a middle name, everyone, even my parents had a middle name. (And why I did not I don’t know.) When I was confirmed at the wise age of 10 I took my confirmation name as my middle name. Over 60 years later it still is and officially so since its on my drivers liscence and my passport!

    Since the eBook searches mentioned in the comments didn’t turn anything up I checked the archived fandom site and that turned up empty. So I’d second the suggestions of letting the Internet work its magic to have somebody correct you – or go with ‘Here kitty, kitty’.

  99. In the south, at least in my dad’s family way back when, the middle name, especially for a boy, was the mothers maiden name.

    I knew a girl whose last name was Butts, so Connor Butts Lennart? And I had a professor who had the most unfortunate last name of Dick whose parents named him Harold. And yes, he went by Harry. I had him for two classes and about hurt myself trying not to laugh when he introduced himself.

  102. I have used my first and middle name all my life with family. My mother’s name is Nancy and so is mine. To tell us apart they called me Nancy Lee. Any phone calls that come into work asking for Nancy Lee, we know it is a relative.

    Curran’s full name when one of them was showing off how much he knew about Curran. Maybe Hugo, as it was Jim that Saimon was showing off to by knowing Jim’s full name and background. But I don’t remember which book Hugo did this in or if there were 3 names.

  105. My husband doesn’t have a middle name and mine is dreadfully boring. (Marie) I made sure all of my kids have middle names that are not super common.

  108. Question: what is the point of a middle name?

    First names are what people are called and last names are surnames to indicate family or bloodline. It doesn’t seem like middle names have much of a function. The only one I can think of is to indicate a maternal last name or a maiden name.

    So does Curran need a middle name?

    Hehe… is there something else in his lineage we don’t know yet?

    Just trying to distract myself as I wait for the Blood Heir sequel (and the rest of Hugh’s trilogy too of course) and anything else you have to feed the Book Devouring Horde.

    On another note (Hidden Legacy potential spoilery alert):

    Thank you for writing the amazing stories you gift us and adding color to our stressed lives. I was finally able to finish Ruby Fever for the first time after waiting for the library (bit short on funds now) and a re-read marathon of anything Hidden Legacy world related (even back to its original incarnation of the Kinsmen and other short stories). Needless to say, it was amazing and I am still recovering from the hole the book has left in me now. Writing this as a bit of book therapy to fill the void.

    – Definitely excited to have the confirmation of who I thought Caesar was since my guess in Wildfire.

    – As well as confirmation of my suspicions from The Cool Aunt.

    – Victora needed that release, and I’m glad it was in a safe space around those she loves. There is only so much a person can take before they crumble.

    – I am just giddy with excitement counting all the confirmed and potential future powers mixed in the future House Baylor descendants. I literally stopped to count on my finger and had to use both hands, knowing this is unaccounted for the surprise mutation mixes!

    – Please give Arabella a trilogy, pretty please. It is only fair, 3 sisters, each get 3 books. It could also be standalone-ish stories, no need for an overarching plot if you don’t want to. Honestly, I’m enjoying the ships and I’m sure other fans are too. Arabella can take her time choosing as she lives her adventures, no need to designate a soulmate yet hehe. We would all love to explore more of the world & fun people dynamics through her ships… hehe so far I count 3:

    Stephen Jiang – aquakenetic from Emerald Blaze (as an Asian, I would love to see more of the House politics in that cultural area) Thank you for the surprise you already gave about Stephen, I read so many Chinese webnovels and as a Vietnamese American it brought great joy to see the representation.

    Michael from the Office of Records – so far my guess is him for the final endgame for Arabella. He seems to have the least attachment to politics and reputation.

    Mihail – OMG I just love your surprises haha <3

    I've got to say that I was surprised that Latimer and Regina didn't appear at all. I was fascinated by Latimer since his delightful mistake at Baranovsky's fundraiser. I still expected to see a little bit of them after reading the deleted scene, but I can understand your choice. Of course this means we are all expecting at least a novella of Regina (hehe feed us), hopefully with glimpses of the Baylors too (puppy dog eyes).

  110. Don’t remember a middle name but used to be a tradition that boys middle names were their mothers maiden names have multiple instances of this in my family’s genealogy book if you decide to give him one

  113. I did a search on “Curran” through several novels but kept getting interrupted reading favorite scenes. No mention.

    If no one has found it yet, any mention may have occurred on the blog if he does have one. I am leaning towards him not having one. He doesn’t need a middle name.

  117. I will make my last stand on the hill of “Curran doesn’t have a published middle name.” Saiman would have known and let it slip. Or Nimrod. I do agree with those that said it might be in something that didn’t make the final cut.

    • I’m with the people who had a very vague recollection that it might be Brian. But if not, I vote we go French with Minou, as in Curran Minou Lennart. Otherwise, being as he was from the Smokey Mountains, using his Mom or other female ancestor’s maiden name is very common there. Or at least it is in that branch of my family. Some are from a couple generations up, so as to keep those names alive in the family.
