Happy anniversary!

Curran:  Hey, how is the shopping going?

Kate:  I found really good tomatoes.

Curran:   Oh good.  Out of curiosity, what kind of monster looks like a rabid wolf that stands on hind legs?  About eight feet tall, with big scaly bat wings?

Kate:   Bear claws?  Red eyes?  Glows blue?

Curran: Yes, that’s the one.

Kate: It’s a kludde out of Belgium. Cape Fear River has been making stagnant pools all over the place after the last storm. It probably spawned in one of those. Why?

Curran:  No reason.

Kate: Curran, is there a kludde in our yard?

Curran: Seems that way.  So what else did you get besides tomatoes?

Kate:  Where is our son?

Curran: Talking to the kludde.

Kate: What is it saying?

Curran: Something about ripping out Conlan’s heart and eating it.

Kate: Okay, and what is Conlan saying?

Curran: He is asking it why that specific threat.  Ripping the heart out requires breaking the ribs and according to our son, it’s “laborious” while ripping out the throat is faster, easier, and more efficient.  He seems genuinely curious, and the kludde is stumped.

Kate: Why me?

Curran: I’m watching them from the wall. I can jump down there in half a second.

Kate: If you do, don’t rip its head off…

Curran: Too late.  Conlan just did.

Kate: Okay, it’s going to split into seven copies of itself.  Look for the one that’s slightly brighter than the other.

Curran:   By brighter you mean?

Kate:   More saturated.

Curran: …

Kate:  What’s going on? 

Curran:  He made blood claws, ripped out all of their throats, and now he is lecturing the corpses.

Kate: I think we should limit his visits to his grandfather.  His tendency to orate is clearly rubbing off on Conlan, and it’s too dangerous. Something could attack him, and he wouldn’t notice it until it’s too late.

Curran: He is nicely distracted by the sound of his own voice.

Kate: Are you going to jump down and show him the error of his ways?

Curran: Yep.

Kate: Have fun.  Take pics if you can.

  57. OMG! I laughed so hard I did something I don’t like to do ( involves having to change an undergarment). Wow oh wow, was wondering how Conlan is getting on. I suspect if you write a book featuring Conlan I will laugh so hard I’ll drop dead, but what a way to go!

  86. Awww, so cute! But I do NOT approve of things which regenerate after decapitation. I am extremely pro-beheading, so this does not work for me.

    • I should mention that I’m not a serial killer. Or a butcher. I just think all heroes should decapitate their enemies to ensure they’re dead. Watch much TV?

      • I read too much Greek mythology as a kid. The Hydra has always stuck with me as major metaphor material. Beheading is one of those things that seems like a good idea at the time because it’s simple and quick. That’s the kind of solution that produces unforeseen circumstances more often than not. Just saying.

        • Or unforeseen consequences, as the case may be. It’s clearly time for a snack and some tea before I try to think any more.

          • I figure the percentage of dead-dead will beat dead-then-revived-manifold so better to err on caution. Especially as so many love to bring a villain’back to life’. Ideally, I’d go decapitation, burn the body, scatter the ashes. Maybe chuck some acid on there too. Also don’t spare your enemies people! Kill the heck out of them.

            My family are quietly concerned that I may one day turn into a despotic supervillain. But like I say, if I do they’ll be golden since I’d kill all their enemies too.

              I concure with this plan of action. And normally the burning tends to stop the regeneration (hydra and heracles style)… but then there are those pesky phoenix’s throughing that theory into disrepute

              • I think those species are probably far enough apart genetically to preclude hybridization, at least in the wild. I’m all for overkill; just saying decapitation alone is not always the answer.

                • Genteel, polite, rational conversations about behead vs. do-not-behead can only be found amongst the BDH. That’s why I love being part of it! ????????????????

                  • I’m usually in favor of beheading/dismembering then weighting the various parts and throwing them in the ocean near a subduction zone from a moving boat. (It’s what I voted for to get rid of a known gollum, but no, the rest of the party voted to use a small A-bomb). We’ll find out if it works next week, I have my doubts.

  92. Love it! Thank you. Fun fact: I live in Belgium and hadn’t heard about the ‘kludde’ either. (Luckily I never saw one in our backyard.) My mom was really surprised by this lack of my knowledge, when I told her about today’s blog post.

    In the meantime I have her reading Innkeeper. I gave her my old kindle LOADED with your books. Somehow she finished book one and went looking for the second book -in the kindle store. There is erotica by the same title. I got a notification that a charge was made for Clean Sweep. Then I saw the rest of the title (dirty desires 2) ????. I’m still laughing. She got through chapter one and was very, very confused.

I don’t even care what point of the timeline it’s from. 5000 years ago, start of the present shift (I like this one best I think), while Kate is doing her best to help Atlanta or even post lock up. I would love to read his perspective.

    • Phones work during tech and sometimes during a magic wave ????

      Because the technology which makes phones work is lost on most of us, we just believe they do. That belief sustains them during magic.

      I studied Physics for longer than I care to admit, and all I vaguely know about the topic is that it’s something to do with a crystal and a membrane…might as well be magic hehe.

    If ever there was a spin-off for Conlan, I’d be curious how House Andrews would manage because his abilities seem slightly OP’d.

    • Well, his grandfather and grandmother are gods, his father is a First and his mother is, well, Kate. If he didn’t have a few overpowered talents they’d be worried sick about him all the time. I have no doubt that House Andrews has a hint of a childhood book on Conlan just based on the chapters about him and his friends in Blood Heir.

    • Roland escaping his dragon lair might be a sufficient challenge even for Conlan.
      Or they could always do an arc on him growing up and learning to deal with politics…

        Roland cannot leave the dragon realm – Roland is not stuck by himself. Hugh, Kate, Julie and Conlan will visit him frequently. Roland can’t leave the realm because he absorbed the anchor. Look at it this way: Neig was the captain of the ship. He could leave it whenever he wanted. Roland is the ship. Watching a 5 yr old girl put someone in a hold your husband swears he DID NOT teach her while lecturing on the evils of bullying with academic vocabulary you DID teach her is a priceless experience.

  390. It would be so wonderful to have a Conlon and Friends book come out. We got a taste of what it might be like in Blood Heir. Adolescent shapeshifters and related monsters. They will have poor choices and will need adult supervision and intervention. They will be heroes and heroines in spite of themselves. We would all love such a series of books!

    • Actually this is a continuation of the above comment: What if Conlon and a couple of his friends go camping with Conlon’s parents by a lake / river. Something happens and the kids get separated from the parents. They then have to face the natural and unnatural dangers of the forest before reuniting with the adults by the end of the story.

    It’s like everything I do those days is working. I weak up, go to work, then when it’s over, I go to my second job. By the time I go home, I’m just awake enough to put something in the microwave, before I crash on my bed for a few hours of sleep.
    Tonight I check my non-read emails, and what do I find ? Notifications for Ilona Andrews’ posts. And among those, this one. I don’t know why it made me cry, but it did.
    I know I’m late, but Thank you so much. You have no idea how good it feels for me to read those precious moments in Kate, Curran and Conlan lives. This is a gift, and I thank you for this.
