First things first, happy bookbirthday to Jeaniene Frost and Bones’ story, The Other Half of the Grave.
This question has been asked several times, so in the interests of keeping pets safe, I’m going to just answer it real quick here. Why is there antifreeze in snow globes? They are frequently shipped in cold weather conditions, and water expands when frozen. If there was no antifreeze, the globes would shatter.
And now for the actual subject of this post.
Our French Publisher editorial team, led by the wonderful Cécile Lederman, Directrice éditoriale at https://editionsbookmark.com/, has shared the art for the French edition of Iron and Magic with us.
It is absolutely gorgeous, but together in that email there was also this image, created by Masha from Deranged Doctor Design. Click on the image to see it in full glory. Warning: it is large but it’s worth it.
Isn’t this cool? For some reason, this struck a cord with me and made me miss Kate a little bit. Just the whole feel of it, the lion, the moon, the girl… ::waves at Post-Shift Atlanta:: Maybe it’s time to revisit. We will see.
Okay, back to the Innkeeper.
Shelly says
That is gorgeous. Wow.
Toni says
+1 — Wow — both the cover *and* the fan art. Beautifully done.

Kathryn Albert says
hahahahahahaha
I actually stared for two minutes looking for the comments before it dawned on me I might have slipped over to the blog at exactly the right time. lol
the cost of hesitation.
Kathryn Albert says
I’m gonna have to buy the french version for that cover alone *sigh*
Nicole says
Right?? It is gorgeous! Both pieces of artwork are swoon-worthy!
RJ says
++1
I want to learn French to justify the cost of buying the book for the beautiful cover alone- but just the cover alone would be worth buying the book….
Does that make sense to anyone else?
I miss Kate coz I grew up reading KD books and these books are part of my happy memories.
Dorothy says
What gorgeous artwork. In my head, the Curran lion is twice as large. Prehistoric, First-sized.
Sarah says
I love the artwork!
Please do go visit Kate…and maybe Julie, Derek, and Ascanio lol
Marie S says
+1
Fabulous art.
Kathleen says

+1 at infinity…
Made the Kate and Curran art my background… I do miss Kate and her smart mouth.
Phylis says
And Roman, I like him
Oli says
So pretty. I missed Kate too so I started to relisten the whole series. I miss the time when I was waiting for the next Kate book… good times.. anyway I love all your books so I still have those times now but Kate was somehow special
Trisha says
Tease!! You tease us!! Seriously though. I love Kate the mostest.
Beautiful artwork!!
Rue says
I miss Kate and co. I also want that book for the cover.
CHRIS says
I want that cover for another Kate book (with the little Rascal)!
Denise says
My heart might have just skipped a beat. Here Kitty Kitty!!
Kathy says
Ooooooo, such a tease!
April says
YES PLEASE!!! MORE KATE, ALWAYS MORE KATE
Megan H. says
Wow, fantastic images. I miss all the post-shift characters. Might be time to re-read them all again!
Patricia Schlorke says
That would make a great cover for another Kate and company book. Watched the Champion League game that was on today, so I didn’t see the post until now. Tomorrow’s game is the one I want to find out the score. ????⚽️
Libby says
The last paragraph…House Andrews…my heart. Right now, I’m trying very hard not to go full BDH in an office of mostly normal people.
Moderator R says
Hehe ????.
*The guts of my enemies! AMEHE!*
Amy says
read your entire post -the only word I remember is ‘revisit’ – lol – 🙂 <3 (sitting here hoping someday…..)
Pam says
Oh,, yes, PLEASE revisit Kate and Curran….
Aman Sidhu says
They’re beautiful! I recently re-read the entire series. I miss Kate, I miss Curran, Conlan, and Julie. Well, all of them I I miss Erra, she became one of my favourites throughout the series. I love all of your characters. Flaws, redemption and all.
Mary Cruickshank-Peed says
I really like both of these, but I’d buy a print of the Kate one. I’m almost sad I don’t run art shows anymore…
Erin says
Oooh, Hugh looks like a hybrid of Chris Evans in the second to last Avengers movie (when Cap had that amazing beard) and the Winter Soldier. I am here for it.
Also, trying to not get my hopes up, but I would be thrilled for anything more in the Kate-verse.
DianaInCa says
I love both! I have always wanted to have a library with tall shelves and one of those ladders on a rail. These would make perfect artwork to add to my fantasy library!
Halk says
Love this so much! I miss Kate and gang very much, thanks for sharing the art
MariaZ says
Wow, both covers are F A B U L O U S !
jewelwing says
Both of those are absolutely gorgeous. That gives me a better visual for post-Shift Atlanta than I’ve had before. Just fabulous.
JenMo says
That is gorgeous. A whole vibe.
Sheridan Skinner says
Love the artwork! It is gorgeous!
Illogicerr says
That is beautiful. Is Curran big enough? Not a knock on the art, I just thought he was larger.
Moderator R says
This is this particular artist’s interpretation of Curran. If you want to picture him bigger, more grey, more scarred, more prehistoric- ???? it’s up to you.
Jeanne Ferguson Turner says
I miss Kate too but happily reread the entire series at least once (sometimes more) every year. Sorry April hasn’t been kind to you and hopeful May will be better for all of us.
Stacey says
Oh man. I am work stress procrastinating hard right now and just thought, “Hmm, there’s an idea. I can read Kate Daniels in French. That’ll slow me down.” And then it occurred to me that there are audio books.
Note with all of this that my level of French ability is somewhere around toddler with a mouth full of candy.
Lisa says
You can’t just say this and freaking change the subject!!!
Moderator R says

Elenariel says
Both are stunning!!
I was commenting just the other day with a fellow rereader that though we love Innkeeper and Hidden Legacy, we can’t stay away from Kate: probably because it was the first, so we got to know her longer – and love her more?!
Michelle S says
Omg I miss Kate and her world so much too! I can’t get enough and love this art. Just finished rereading Magic Triumphs for the 5th or 6th time: *le sigh*
Jess says
Both covers are gorgeous!
KathyInAiken says
This gave me chills. Excellent work.
Shahin says
Me thinks its time for my annual reread. Love Hugh, sigh. Both pictures are gorgeous
Jean says
My art abilities are limited to appreciation of amazing work.
Awesome, both of these!!
(Also, wow, Hugh!! Where IS that fan??!)
Diane Wilson says
Gorgeous artwork; thank you for sharing! And I’d love a new visit with Kate and Curran.
Keera says
Those covers are gorgeous. I’m in the middle of a Kate reread. If you revisit Kate and Curran I would be over the moon. But I have to be honest you guys are right they deserve the retirement. So I’ll be happy when/if we get Julie and Derek. Maybe Ascanio too
Rexy says
Ooh they are gorgeous! ❤️
Shreya Korde says
I’m glad you are missing Kate and her world. I am missing her terribly. Cannot wait for may be it’s time to revisit by you and what that may create. The book covers are gorgeous…
HL says
Gorgeous covers. But that last bit made my head flip!! What?? Ultimate cliffhanger.
Emily Louise says
Absolutely beautiful! Both of them. I like the French Iron and Magic better than the American version.
Marnie says
Totally agree.
Briana says
I love that the other designer’s website is using the Kate & Curran illustration as the main backdrop!
Kirsten says
Gosh I love that cover art!!!
Dallas says
Loved both pieces of art.
Always revisiting KD world, in fact doing a lot of re reads of all the series I have.
Meg says
I love the cover. It’s the first time I’ve been able to picture Elara.
Donna A says
I want EVERYTHING!! Mon Francais est tres mal – do I care? Non! Do I want more Kate / Catalina / Innkeeper / Arabella / Julie / Hugh / new death foretelling tea shop meeting woman? Hell yes I do! Will I wait patiently? Yeah, I guess so ????
Sumi says
Yesssss! Ilona said maybe <3
Thank you Masha!! ????
Debbie says
Beautiful artwork!! Love both of these so much.
Kate and company are my favorite, maybe because that’s how I found House Andrews’s books!!
Please (she says with pleading eyes).
Wont says
Ears pricked!!! Revisit??? ????
Beth says
I miss Kate too!!!
Lara says
Wow those are so beautiful. The french covers are always so wonderful.
Denise says
Those pictures are amazing.
Lara says
Also I miss Kate, Curran and the rest too, so I’m currently re-reading so I can do the full set with iron covenant and Julie’s book added in.
Side note, I really don’t like Jim sometimes. Kate names him one of her only friend and he really doesn’t have her back most of the time.
Moderator R says
He’s a cat ????. Just because Kate thinks of him as a friend, doesn’t mean it’s reciprocated. We know the two things Jim cares about, Dali and the Pack- in that order.
Sleepy says
I mean, he is friends with Curran though, right? Even if that is strained sometimes
Alyssa says
Gorgeous artwork! But isn’t Curran white with grey stripes? ????
Moderator R says
In the books he has grey fur with smoky stripes ????. But this is an artist interpretation. Art is not literal, if you want to imagine him differently the power is yours, as Captain Planet used to say ????
Gin says
The cover and art are gorgeous! ????????
Wendy says
amazing artwork!!!! ????????????????
Brooke T says
For some reason, I keep imagining Hugh with a Hello Kitty shirt instead…
Laura Martinez says
That cover is gorgeous. And yes, we also miss Kate and her lion. Thank you for sharing!
An says
I have de Fer et de mage in English, I think I’m gonna need it in French too now. It will be good practice, right?
Marnie says
“Maybe it’s time to revisit.” PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE.

Those are both gorgeous. I love them!
Roxanne Montgomery says

Michelle McLoughlin says
Fabulous Art work. Nailed my idea of the characters.
Sincere grovelling for most post shift Atlanta from Australia
Hopeful Kylie says
i miss Kate and her lion and will add to the grovelling from Australia
Kelly B says
The lion and the girl. Just beautiful.
Stacy says
Just wondering if the revisit might include a family getting to know Hugh and his family….yes I’m dreaming about, the information given at the Tea party Dina held really want more.
Thank you for everything you write, and happy vibes being sent your way.
Lorrie Thompson says
I’m not even through the whole KD series yet (just started Magic Shifts) and I miss it! Just knowing it will end soon is kind of hard.
I guess that’s the cost of loving a great world-building series…it’s more than one story or a story arc, it’s an actual place populated with people (and people-adjacents?) that you miss. :-}
Kimberly says
Fabulous work, I can’t decide which I like better.
Barbara says
You have some amazing fans. That artwork is stunning. And I could also drool for a while over that version of Hugh.
As an aside, I was intrigued that Elara responds to prayers. That … is unusual.
Sjik says
Squeeeeeeee
Yvette says
So much Kate love. I’d just be happy to finally get a second Hugh book. 🙂
lbink says
Beautiful cover art! Thank you for sharing!
Rohaise says
Wow!
Kat Marvel says
Holy crap, both of those pieces are devastating. So beautiful!
CathyTara says
Wait, a moment of KD! Sigh. Still, glad the kitty is ok. It is amazing how they twine around our hearts. You live an interesting life.
Judy Schultheis says
The pictures are lovely – you guys get the BEST artists.
I am seriously hoping real life in the world improves soon so that you feel up to giving us Hugh & Elara #2. The few snippets you’ve given us are wonderful.
I wouldn’t mind a short story starring Luther Dillon, either. I am a huge fan of Derek & Julie, but that’s them as a pair (and ‘Aurelia Ryder’ certainly suits the adult better than ‘Julie Olsen’ would) – as an individual character, Luther’s my favorite, though I have to admit, he’s followed moderately closely by Doolittle.
I find myself hoping that I don’t get blasted by all the fans of Roman, since I’m fond of him, too – and certainly hope he doesn’t end stuck in the sort of relationship his parents have, even if his SO is inclined to argue with him.
Katie R says
Wow. So much detail. I love the color scheme and the facial expressions of Kate and Curran (creating a realistic lion that has a believable facial expression is a cool feat in and of itself).
I also love the cover for Iron and Magic. That’s a great Hugh.
Berbara says
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!
Joy says
Wow. Phenomenal art. And the Iron and Magic cover is PERFECT.
SoCoMom says
Love, love, love all this. Thank you!
Sleepy says
I just love the kate universe because its fleshed out so well with so much breadth it’s like visiting an old friend again
Gigi says
The book cover is just how I imagined them. LOVE IT! I’m also relistening to the Kate series but that was after I finished Iron and Magic again.
Liz L says
Beautiful artwork! I love seeing the different interpretations of the characters. I’m horribly bad at it and it helps my brain try to create a mental image of them. Just love the way BDH is trying so hard to rein itself in and not storm the KD castle to beg for more. ????
Tink says
I seem to recall that all the French covers of Kate’s books were better than the U.S. version.
Is there normally that much if a lag between US and French releases? Hugh came out, what, 2(?) years ago? Or has the French version been out for a while and they’re just now sharing?
Deb says
Don’t tease like that!
Ann A says
French Hugh is…um…*fans self*
Chris says
AHHHHHHHH!
Sorry. Write whatever you want, I’ll be here to devour.
Leigh-Ayn says
óh wow! that cover is simply stunning!
and the Kate and Curran picture is amazing! love it.
Lulinke says
Wonderful!
Laura says
Both pictures are absolutely gorgeous!
wingednike says
Love that cover! I just did a re-read of Hugh’s book and it led into re-reads of some of the Kate books. Christopher attacking Teddy…Hugh and Elara showing up at the meeting…so many great moments
AP says
Both are just lovely! Thanks for sharing!
“Maybe it’s time to revisit.” Oh you tease! But I’d happily settle for Julie’s next book! ????
Sheryl says
I missed Kate & Co, too! I’m relistening to all of the books right now. Then I’ll have to go reread Julie & Derek. I’m always happy to read anything you guys write but I would definitely be down for more Kate. And Julie & Derek 🙂
Tara says
Looooove the cover of iron and magic!!! Im sorry but it kicks ass and is much better than the cover i got!!! Love it!
Tempest says
Ohhhhh. Niiiiiice. Thanks for sharing the lovelies.
Like others I’d love for you to revisit Kate, but then I also really love InnKeeper and am looking forward to the next Hidden Legacy, but hey, that snippet the other day sure looked cool and — ok, yeah, I’m pretty much good with anything. 🙂
SJ says
Go you go, Deranged Doctor Design!!!! So beautiful!!! Of course now I want Aurelia & the Wolf!!!!!!!
Also, such a gorgeous cover for iron & magic!
April says
Absolutely beautiful artwork! I miss Kate as well, but I’m happy to read anything you want to write.
Kathryn says
OMG PLEASE revisit Kate!!!!!
Do you need more exclamation points? Happy to oblige: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sivi says
That’s beautiful artwork. I wish e-readers had the technical ability (and the legal rights) to pick the cover design that the reader likes from all of the available editions for the language version of their book.
As I would totally go for that French cover for the next Hugh book for my English edition.
And would love the ability to swap out or add extra art to books as a moving bookmark (sort of like how some books have one cover art, then you open it and you have a second cover page on the inside – as witnessed in the DBH. As some of the fan art like the second imagec shared,
would be my pick for the moving bookmarks.
Thank you for sharing.
AndrewC says
“Maybe it’s time to revisit. We will see.”
I can hear the sound of fainting people thudding to the floor and “squee-ing” from around the world.
Moderator R says
That’s definitely what that is ????
Lee says
Now THAT’S Hugh!
Eegoolina says
The artists you discover are a constant delight. Beautiful!
Frances says
Both of these images are stunning. That Kate and Curran picture captures the mood of post-shift Atlanta so beautifully. I do miss them! Also, its been well over 10 years since I first read Magic Bites but I just realized for the first time that (according to “NameDoctor.com” and other the baby name origin websites), “Lennart” means “Brave Lion” (from old German). I can’t believe I missed that for so long. (An alternative interpretation is that it’s from Gaelic “Leannan” meaning “lover” :D) Either way, it’s perfect.

Yes please … re-visit. I miss Kate and Curran. Love your books and also looking forward to reading Jeanienne Frost’s latest. You are 2 of my favourite authors. Thank you for the hours of escapist joy I’ve had immersing myself in other worlds.

Holy moly that is amazing!!! Time to revisit Iron and Magic, Magic Triumphs and Blood Heir

Love the picture so cool, now I have to go and reread Kate &Curran again.

My thoughts exactly! ????

Both illustrations are gorgeous. I would love to revisit Kate and Curran.

Yes! Revisit. I also want to revisit. If i could draw I would spam you with Kate art to get your inspiration flowing.
I’ll spam good thoughts instead.

REVISIT! Please. 🙂

What I should be doing and what I am doing right now are two completely different things.
I know in my head that I need to finish these documents for the job I am going to apply for….but then I saw this blog post…..now I just want to revisit Kate and Curran and have myself a good reread of the entire series.
This past weekend was hell and a reread sounds like what I need….after I work on my cover letter and teaching statement….after I am done teaching this week…after…
Also, now I need to know how Conlan is and is he still orating to random magical creatures about the futility of their tactics and actions prior to killing them?
JennT says
Ab-so-lutely Gorgeous!! I want both in full “Movie Poster” size — Kate & Curran can be a wall mount (8’x10′), please, please, please…..
Thank you so much for sharing!
Mina says
Oh yes please, revisit! ???? I miss post-shift Atlanta as well…
Abha Dhupkar says
Ooh!! Loved the iron and magic cover!
But the Kate and Curran one is enthralling…..
Sherri says
These are so beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
Lada says
Dear artist fans of Ilona Andrews,
Please keep up the fantastic work!!
You’re magic art is inspiring!!
Thank you for sharing the gorgeous artwork.
PS: I know the Hugh series in a hold pattern and I’m not sure of the timeline in relation to the end of KD (except for Iron and Magic) but any chance Kate and Curran end up in KY helping Hugh and Elara in their last battle?
Yvette says
Aww, man! I would love to read an ‘Iron and Magic’ book where Kate and Curran visit and shite happens that keeps them around a while. And of course, they must have their son with them.
Would also like to read the back story of Julie showing up at the castle making her case for Hugh to come to Atlanta to help with the dragon. 🙂
Lynn Thompson says
Thank you, Ilona Andrews for the post.
I just had a chance to check blog. Actually this April has been one for the record books for me between Mother and Mother too.
Glad to know kitty is okay. Thank you for letting us know.
In personal news the plumber has finished installing a new drain line to Mothers bathroom sink. The new handicapped shower unit will be installed Friday. And thankfully no one was hurt when the shower tile wall fell “like rain” when plumber leaned back against it while talking with my BIL about sink drain problem. Whew! Oh yes and I shaved the dog(mother’s ankle biter). He is so happy and strutting like a peacock. ????
Your ROFLOL— mother had a annual dr visit Monday. He had an intern training with him. The intern asked Mother “how are feeling?” She replied “oh I worked in lab at ‘company name’ .” So he tried again “how is dizziness?” Reply “oh I taught school for years”. At which point the intern looked lost. Then her regular doctor changed places with him and asked mother “how are you feeling today?” She replied “I was dizzy this morning when I first got up but I am fine now.” Which was true and we had told her doctor that she had been complaining about dizziness when first getting up in morning. Well at 79 that is not surprising. I felt bad for intern who was standing next to door but that’s reality when dealing with senile dementia patients.

The sentinel scene with Kate and Curran is reassuring yet filled with longing.
Jocelyn Malone says
Wow, both of those are really lovely art pieces! Thanks for sharing.
Angela says
Both amazingly talented artists!
Honestly I thought Curran was gray? I picture him as Way less hairy, mostly because we get so many sleek muscle descriptions, I guess. Maybe I’m forgetting and need to reread. I love her Kate representation.
Moderator R says
Yes, Curran is grey in the books but this is an artist’s interpretation that inspired the author ????.
M. says
French cover is gorgeous – I like the movement, the energy, the contrast between the two halves of the image – splendid.
The fan art – I agree that the lion and the ruins are very evocative, but I am sorry – Kate doesn’t do it for me.
I guess it’s a personal preference, but for me. – Kate will always be Kate in Luisa Preissler’s vision (see for example https://www.luisapreissler.de/aquestionableclient): strong, capable, no nonsense – someone you would always want at your back.
Fragile, fashionably clothed and posed heroines with paring knives don’t do it for me that much.
JUDY WILLIAMS says
This is so how I pictured Kate and Curran, awesome and beautiful picture; Kate and her sword and I can always picture and hear whenever Curran Roars, the heart stops, that’s my favorite effect in the Kate Daniels World!
njb says
I love the French book cover for Iron and Magic, but I still prefer ours. And the fan art is really cool! Thanks for sharing!
mj says
yeowza! Is that cover for Iron and Magic fabulous or what? The Kate and Curran thing is nice too. But something about that first one is just… as if The Lord of the Rings was about humans instead of elves, hobbits and dwarves.
Dona Deam says
The art work is gorgeous. I reread my favorites Kate books often. It’s a great world.
Marcia says
You just blew up the internet you know!!
Naenae says
New KD books confirmed!!!!
Wait who started that rumor?!
Moderator R says
???? This is how it all begins!
To everyone reading this and getting confused, new books have NOT been confirmed, Naenae is making a joke ????
Naenae says
Mod R, I noticed you did denied they have been confirmed not that they exist. In crazy BDH land that is a confirmation. All joking aside artists visions of the characters like this always make me enjoy the books.

I…I am overcome by all this beauty. Overcome, I say.

Gorgeous! While I understand the need to move onto the next project, I won’t lie, I’d love to read more of Kate and Curran.

Wow that’s such a neat graphic for the KD world

Funny! I read yesterday a comment about “no romance novel” and thought Kate isnt a romance. First of all it is about friendship and choices. Secondly its a romance if at all. I love Kate and I miss her. I am still searching for similiar protagonist but there are no other Kates out there 🙁
One of the reasons why I love Iron n Magic. Its about friendship. And I never thought I could like Hugh but this novel is a masterpiece. I still dont know how you managed to turn an antagonist into a respected protagonist. Amazing! Therefore I hope the series will continue 🙂
Ash says
Have you read House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J Maas? I think Bryce Quinlan the heroine, reminds me a lot like Kate; in terms of her utterly inspiring loyalty to her friends (I seriously cried with the beautiful friendships portrayed in this book), her snark and confidence (there is a lot of wry humour like Kate), her humbleness (she reminds me a lot of Kate in that for most of her life she has been hiding how powerful she is, and her level-headed/matureness (bare with her on this because at the start Bryce is portrayed as a “party girl” but there is SO much more to her than that, and her self growth from when she was younger to her present self now is amazing. This is why Bryce reminds me of Kate and this is why I love them both so much. Also Bryce’s romantic relationship with her love interest Hunt reminds me a lot of the relationship between Kate & Curran. So yeah would 100% recommend Crescent City series as a great book hangover for the Kate Daniels series! Xx
Cynthia says
2nd that. Highly recommend it. It is FIERCE.

Ahhh. A revisit to Kate and Curran would be a dream come true! Miss them and the rest of the crew.
Suz says
Love it. I was getting a little tired of the Kate series, but that image of girl with lion is a stunner. Thinking it’s time I re-read the series.
Kat in NJ says
These are both beautiful, but even if they weren’t, I would love ANY artwork that causes Ilona to even think about revisiting KD! But as much as I’d love to read another KD book, my personal choice would be any book that HA would have fun writing, as that would mean more books for us to read in the long term! And they would all be great! ????
Ash says
Please I love Kate and Curran with all my heart BUT I NEED more Hugh and Elara like I need air to breathe please and thank you. Been waiting on The Iron Covenant book 2 since 2018!!! ????????????
Yvette says
I’m waiting on that ‘Iron and Magic 2’ bus stop bench right with you. Such an incredible world they’ve created for Hugh, filled with interesting characters–with Elara being the most interesting.
I especially want Bucky’s back story at some point. I have a feeling he’s a Unicorn stallion, which would explain how he manages to traipse around the woods at night without a mishap. LOL! It would also explain why none of the dire wolves haven’t snacked on him. 🙂
Peggy says
Ohmygod, ohmygod – those paintings! The first absolutely visualizes Hugh for me. I like the Elara figure except for the face. I don’t think Elara would ever spend that much time doing her make up – or need to. And then there’s Kate and her lion. Oh Lordy. How did the artist make Curran’s face look lion-ly and strong, yet intelligent? My only wish for this image is that the artist had used a better model for Kate’s knife … maybe a Bowie or katan … or watched a few episodes of ‘Forged in Fire.’ But I can see why her art might make you want to write another book. Thank you so much for sharing these.

Also, I love the little smile on the lion’s face. That just looks like Curran. Kind of sarcastic.

Several of your characters are of ambiguous racial mixtures, but most of your images have shown 100% white women.
This is the first one that I’ve noticed that is closer to how I imagined her from your writing… (I’m not a fanatic follower, so may have missed some.)
Moderator R says
Authors are not in charge of the cover design of their traditional published novels. They rarely get asked for feedback 🙂 .
Whilst I disagree with you on the lack of representation and probably also on how people of mixed heritage “have to look”, I will repeat what I have said several time in this comment section, artists interpretations are not literal. Always go to the text for character reference, that is the only place where the author’s intention lives freely. Illustrated renditions are not graded on accuracy.
Katharina says
How you tease us ???? It’s totally on you that the BDH goes crazy ????
I have the beautiful calender by Luisa Preissler and so Kate is in my thoughts at least once a day. Today I asked myself why I’m thinking the green goo on her shoulder is from the impala worm, did somebody mention that or is it just my imagination.
I hope for a second Julie book and lots of Kate shortstorys. I loved the shortstorys in the KD-world. That’s kind of a tradition, right? In julie-world could be so many shortstorys *imdreaming*
Marie says
WOW! That cover is gorgeous, and that fan art is incredible! So like what I’d imagine Kate and Curran and post-shift Atlanta to be!

omg I love that cover so much. I tend to like the foreign covers more. Covers really aren’t that big a deal to me but I love to see a gorgeous one.
Back to KD World? Yes please. I want more Kate. I miss Kate. Kate will forever be my fav. I would name a pet after her but it’s too close to being my nickname that people would think I’m naming my pet after myself.
Jane says
Wow! Absolutely stunning vision of Kate, Curran and their world. She is very talented to say the least. Please, please revisit.
Lee says
Gorgeous covers, both of them! Thank you for sharing them
Michele G says
Love the art. <3 Kate & Curran is so very good!! Yes, they need a revisit from me too. Thank you for sharing.
Hope all is well at House Andrews.
Ellen Solensky says
Ok then, now I know where Kate and all the other women you have created get their smart aleck snark. Maybe you will consider more Kate? Boo Hoo, maybe. I completely agree with your sense of both artworks, they truly convey the spirit of your and Gordon’s work.
Christina says
Oh my god! You absolutely must revisit now that u told us! Ps. Please ????????????????????????????????????????
CHRIS says
Words to live by, “HERE KITY KITY” ❣️
Relin says
So much beautiful art! It’s so neat to see the cycle of beautiful art (written stories) inspiring beautiful art (images) which then inspire more stories! It’s a lovely cycle!!
Victoria says
Quick, somebody do an outstanding Team Metal Rose art!
Ariel says
1. I made it my wallpaper
2. How MUCH do you miss it?? I. Would. Die.
Sandra says
I love everything you write. I only have about five authors I can say that about and I read probably four books a week easy. Just wanted to let you know this. Your books brighten my life and I reread them (2 series at a time) a couple times a year. Thanks again for sharing your talent with us.
Susan says
Amazing art! I miss Kate and Curran too.
Elisabeth says
The cover and the fanart are absolutely gorgeous ????.
And I know the feeling of missing Kate, which is why I’m currantly listening to all the audio books of the series. After reading them all three or four times I decided to give listening a try and I have to say that I love it.
Thank you for these wonderful stories and snippets – they are often the only brights spot in an awful day.
DeAnna says
Beautiful artwork!
I would love to revisit Kate. I was just thinking the other day that it was time for a re-read.
Barbara Swanson says
Awesomely gorgeous art for awesomely well-written stories that will live forever.
Thank you!
Rana says
Too bad the French version isn’t used for the USA cover. Beautiful Kate Daniel image.
Leslie says
The French cover is oh-la-la! Amazing!
Also, “time to revisit” squeeeeeeee!
Virginia M Nall says
Would love a new Kate story. The picture is so evocative!
Debbie says
Both pictures are wow! But Kate’s sword looks a knife.
Maria M. OToole says
Love both pieces of art! I assume Kate and Curran are at Mishmar, since it looks like Kate’s sword is broken…or am I seeing that wrong?
The French cover for Iron and Magic has me squeeing all over again about Roman sort of spilling the beans about Hugh’s lineage a while back in the “interview” you “did” with the two of them…
Alex says
Yea! I hope Kate continues to inspire. I miss her too.
Juni says
Really terrific art for the covers!
Bill From NJ says
Not surprised the snow globe makers used Ethelyne glycol, it is cheaper than safer alternatives.
It is still commonly used in automobile antifreeze, though you can get alternatives. If your car ever leaks antifreeze in your driveway, please hose it off, animals find it very attractive and it can be deadly to them, especially since car antifreeze is usually mixed 50 50 w water.
Glad meow meow is okay, I am sure at the end of the scare they looked at you like ‘What?’, with utter disdain.
Teri Langston says
This art work is amazing. I love it. Your last comments almost made me forget about the beautiful artwork. My heart is skipping beats. My hopes are up. I know Kate and Curran have earned their happily ever after. I also LOVE Julie and Derick’s story and this world. So happy-thank you
SH says
The cover is stunning. *faints*
Faith says
This is fantastic and perfect timing. I just started another re-read of the Kate Daniels series (I do one every couple of years or so)
I have a question- I’m on Magic Rises and there is a point where Curran is wondering if Saiman’s ship goes to Greece, and Kate says (paraphrasing here) “Yes, in the midnight games Siaman brought a Minitaur over”
So my question is, how much planning is done with series like this? Did you know ahead of time you would be going to Greece so you had the Minitaur show up before, or did the minitaur happen and then you used that to have the setting of Magic Rise’s be in Greece?
Moderator R says
Hi Faith,
Magic Rises is not set in Greece ????. To quote Hugh, they are “in Ancient Colchis, the cradle of Georgia itself”. This is a country situated in the Caucasus, at the meeting between Eastern Europe and Western Asia https://www.britannica.com/place/Georgia
And no, it wasn’t planned that far ahead ????
Aryn says
Absolutely glorious covers…
Mellany says
LOVE LOVE LOVE these images!
Miriam says
Yes, please, revisit Atlanta. And Wilmington. Live from Germany.
Heather Griffiths says
Love the French cover for Iron and Magic sooooo much more than the North American edition! High was too puny on that one and Elara looked like an emo teenager. This one is exactly right.
Yvette says
I agree with you 100%. The ‘Iron and Magic’ French cover is incredible and so much more as I’ve envisioned Hugh and Elara, except with Hugh a few inches taller with longer hair and no beard. 🙂 But Elara is exactly how I’ve envisioned her.
Ruby says
Post shift Atlanta looks a lot like Mariupol.
Skippy says
Wow. What wonderful art. Thanks so much for sharing (and stringing the BDH along with your inner dialog…) 🙂
Gloria says
Yes! Yes! Yes! A revisit will be great. Jonesin’ for it. Whatever you please. I will love it just the same.
susan reynolds says
re-visitation, yes please! I don’t care if it’s Julie or Kate or Roman or Ascanio or Derek or Andrea or Mahon…well, yes I do. I want all of them. But….no pressure. Just wistful sighs.
Logan Matthew Teague says
Much love for two gorgeous pieces of art
Mayte says
They so beautiful, both… i do hope the muses be generous and help you with the second book of Hugo and Elara.
Silent pray 😉
Donna R. Parrish says
The picture is AWESOME.
Kate is so ….Eh. I’m here.
And the eyes on him….
Don’t mess with My Woman/Mate.
Would be a wonderful Poster.
Len says
I would love to see a Kate Daniels book, I also think that a collection of short stories, recollections of Roland, Erratim, family and friends would be great. I love the little comments both make, oh your bla bla bla grand relative did this… Even if it was a battle or what we are up to at the minute scene from their lives.
I do happily take what is offered though.
Pam says
Beautiful artwork on the covers. I hope one day you do revisit post-Shift Atlanta. You two did something special there.
Rebekka says
Wow, both pictures are amazing! 😀 Kate and Curran are stunning, and I really love the bookcover, even more than the original one! Not really a surprise, though, it’s often like this, I’m just more used to the European type of bookcovers. They seem better blended and less chaotic, but I guess it’s just what everyone is used to.
But more importantly, I see there will be a french version of Iron and Magic, which is great! So … is there any chance we will be german one as well? Please? I guess you don’t have that much influence on it, but we have to at least humbly ask for it, right? We would really love one.
Moderator R says
Hi Rebekka,
House Andrews do not control the availability of the books in other languages.
Only your local publishers and retailers control that. If you would like to read Iron and Magic in your language/your country, please email the local publisher who published Kate’s series or one who publishes fiction similar to Ilona Andrews work and let them know you would like to read on your terms.
Ilona and Gordon are very happy to sell foreign rights to other countries and have the books to be available as widely as possible ????
Eileen says
OMG that is gorgeous.
Sylvia says
Gorgeous Kate & Curran! Wish it were available as a print on Society6 or similar platforms.
Was inspired by cover & BHR to try to get l’édition française in both audio & paperback (listening to the news & reading Courrier International gets a bit dry & am saving Lupin S2 on Netflix for later as a reward) but realized the audiobooks are only available in English & German for now. ????
Decisions, decisions ????
Tanja says
The cover of “de fer et de magie” ist simply perfect and builds a wonderful entry way into the novel. Very “atmospheric” piece of art done by Masha. Kudos to her talent. It took amazon.de forever to offer Magic Triumph on audible and I love listening to the audiobook during therapy. Together with Julie & Derek’s last adventures I was reminded on how much I enjoy Kate and the KD world.
If you could find joy in immersing yourselves in your KD creation again I together with many others readers will probably deliver killing BDH pre-order numbers out of pure appreciation for your work and the many enjoyable hours spent with these characters.
Sylvia says
Who do we pester to get audio in French? Amazon.fr? Audible.fr? The French publisher? ????
So much more fun to read HA books & a much more effective way to keep French fresh in the mind when one listens to the audio as one reads the book.
Bee in my bonnet now ????
Moderator R says
The local publishers ????. They control the availability of the books in the country/language.
Sylvia says
Thank you.
Now I have the pleasant task to choose which French HA book to buy first then email, Insta & FB the publisher to ask for French audio – for the greater good ????cuz living life is more than illness & death, doom & gloom.
A more productive way to procrastinate????
Mark N. says
What struck me first from the image from Masha at DDD was how they managed to get that expression on Curran’s face — amazing. Second, we know that Kate’s origins from Roland’s side are Asian/Middle Eastern and this image of her captures that part of her heritage – wonderful!
FBR says
Those images are gorgeous! I want to buy the French version just for the cover art and I in no way speak French. And I really love Kate and Curran’s picture. It makes me want to revisit those books (again). Good luck with Innkeeper!
Bege says
Mod.R this lovely art work reminded me of something I`ve been wondering about since Magic Triumphs: can you help me find the episode revealing when/how Curran changed colour from gray to black.
Moderator R says
Hi Bege,
Kate first sees him black in Chapter 13 of MT, whilst they’re saving Rowena.
“He was as big as Moccus, solid black, a majestic mane floating in the wind, sparking with streaks of magic.”
Andrews, Ilona. Magic Triumphs, Kate Daniels 10. Aced 2018. Kindle edition, Chapter 13, page 215
We don’t see when it initially happened, but it is one of the transformations caused by consuming animal gods.
bege says
Thank you for your reply. You may delete this at will.
It struck me as a bit odd, since the observant Kate had noticed height and hair changes in her husband, so she surely would have noticed gradual changes in the colour of his fur earlier on.
I now guess that HA cunningly made colour a non-issue.
Moderator R says
It’s not clear whether this was a gradual change or whether Kate had even recently seen Curran in his shifted form :). I believe he had just come back from a god-eating trip.
Tim Hart says
The picture is great! But more important, Another Magic Book!
Magic Rebounds
Magic Again
Magic Redux
Let the rumors begin. Name that new book!
Moderator R says
Tsk tskkk 😛
Erika says
Team Magic Again!!
Samantha Anne says
WOW! Both images are stunning!!
Josephine Jones says
Thank you. Fabulous art on cover
Danette says
Both pictures are gorgeous.
Cynthia says
Wow. Those are some really beautiful art. It’s just so amazing how people can have this vision in their heads and then make it real. I don’t have that skill and think it’s just so cool. Also, if the lion and girl ever goes up for sale, could you let the BDH know? I wouldn’t mind a poster of that one. Thanks for sharing!
Tonya S. says
The French cover is GORGEOUS! Did I say GORGEOUS? ‘Cause that’s what I meant! LOL!
Next, I agree with you on missing Kate. She’s a good person doing the best she can in a crazy world. It’s hard when you care so darn much. You wanna keep them all safe, but life happens. Then you find a boot in your face. Duck and run or fight? Choices, choices. I normally loved the choices Kate made.
Thanks Ilona & Gordon.
Minna says
Amazing picture! I know – I miss Kate and Curran also. Although I love that we have Julie coming back with new stories. So thank you for keeping that world alive with new stuff.
Maybe a reread is in order for K & C – again. 🙂

“Maybe it’s time to revisit”
My heart..my heart…. be still…
I can literally feel the bouncing and pounding of my heart.
Amazing Kate artwork.. gives a ghoulish feel to it ..

For BRH who wanna join me in pestering, I mean, politely petitioning the French publisher for KD Audio en français :
https://editionsbookmark.com/pages/contact
Broché : big softcover with the gorgeous cover
Poche: mass market paperback (cover which isn’t my cuppa tea but ????)
& HA is still listed as living in Oregon or Georgia, USA on Amazon.fr ????
BRH public service, tee hee ????

I freaking love the Kate Daniels series!! I’ve read it multiple times. I was excited to see a spin-off with Julie and Derrick and can’t wait for the next one. It’s truly one of my favorite series!
Andrea Smith says
Wow, I love the artwork! Both artworks our stunning.
PS I typically consider myself a good pet owner. However, I never considered a snow globe dangerous. Lucky for me, I put them behind glass when I had kids. You guys are always teaching me something new.
Sue L says
I absolutely love Iron and Magic – it’s probably my favorite of all your books. Is there still a second volume in the works? I know you’re super busy with other projects, but I really hope this is on the list somewhere. Thanks for being so engaged with your fans!
Moderator R says
Hi Sue,
There has been no news about Iron and Magic sequel being cancelled 🙂 , so yes.
House Andrews have decided to not announce any of the projects they’re working on until they are ready and up for pre-order/release, so as to avoid the pressure of deadlines, so we will not know what is “in the works”. For more info on this, please see here https://ilona-andrews.com/2022/on-being-difficult/
The surest way to not miss any official announcement is to check their release schedule here https://ilona-andrews.com/release-schedule/#agent-publisher. Any upcoming project with a secure fate/date will be announced there.

Am I the only one who wonders how Kate was while she was pregnant? How Curren was with her? What shenanigans she got up to? How was Erra with Kate? How did Curran and Erra formed their truce? Can we get a little minie book of Kate going the pregnancy? I just want to read more about Kate and Curran. Lol love this series!!!
gary furrow says
the cover does bring Kate to mind. Maybe you should pay her and her world a visit with a book or two. Even a novella or two would be welcomed.
