This Kingdom Refuses To Panic

Admin, Blog, Business of Writing, Maggie 100 Comments | POST A COMMENT July 22, 2026 by Ilona

Art by Candice Slater. Prints here.

Me, last Tuesday: Columbus write up, a cursory mention that one of the authors present was dropped by the publisher.

BDH: What does drop mean?

Mod R, to me: They want to know what dropped means.

Me, this Monday: Explanatory post of what dropped means.

BDH: Are your series getting dropped? Are your publishers not happy? What are the sales numbers? Do you not have enough sales? What are the sales numbers?

Mod R, to me: No good deed goes unpunished.

Dear Horde,

Right now I’m looking at not one but two congratulatory emails in my inbox, one from Tor US and the other from Tor UK, both of which express happiness with sales. We have just received three new offers from foreign publishers.

Going along with my CIA stance, I can neither confirm nor deny that This Kingdom has exceeded expectations. It is safe to say that this is the best debut we ever had. This is due in part to incredible support from our publishers, but most of all, this happened because of you.

Thank you! You are amazing.

In Depth Sales Numbers

While I can’t tell you the specific sale numbers, I can tell you the Kindle ranks, because they are public record.

Beast Business, published January 29, 2026:

  • On sale for: 6 months
  • Price: $5.99
  • Ebook rank: 10,887 in Kindle Store
  • Amazon reviews: 3,865
  • Goodreads reviews: 6,065

Inheritance, published August 10, 2025:

  • On sale for: 11 months
  • Price: $6.99
  • Ebook rank: 22,578 in Kindle Store
  • Amazon reviews: 9,007
  • Goodreads reviews: 11,341

This Kingdom, published March 31, 2026

  • On sale for: 4 months
  • Price: $14.99
  • Ebook rank: 1,201 in Kindle Store
  • Amazon reviews: 9,266
  • Goodreads reviews: 32,781

Not only has the rank held for 4 months, but the sheer number of Goodreads reviews indicates that the book is being widely read.

Now here is where I level with you:

Sweep of the Heart, published December 13, 2022

  • On sale for: 3.5 years
  • Price: $6.99
  • Ebook rank: 53,830 in Kindle Store
  • Amazon reviews: 12,383
  • Goodreads reviews: 19,279

This Kingdom costs twice what Sweep of the Heart does, and it’s been out for only 4 months, yet you can see by the number of reviews that it was able to reach a much wider audience.

I’ve been trying to explain before why sequels to existing series are bonus releases for us. This is why. The publishing landscape always changes, and in its current form, books greatly benefit from the presence in stores and the backing of a great publishing partner. Not being in print is hurting us. This is partially why there is no Arabella trilogy – we need a publishing partner. The first two trilogies were in print.

It seems Amazon has beaten us to Hidden Legacy announcement we said we couldn’t share yet. Yes, Catalina’s trilogy will be released in trade paperback, matching the new edition of Nevada’s books. The first will be SAPPHIRE FLAMES on February 16. We will have an official announcement and share the new covers as soon as we have Avon’s go-ahead.

Before some of you panic again, we love the Innkeeper world just as much as we love This Kingdom, and we will be continuing it. More news to come soon.

State of House Andrews

I know Horde gets antsy, when we don’t update. To keep you in the loop, this is what we are working currently:

  • Bonus material for the trade cover release of This Kingdom. (I can neither confirm nor deny that this edition might have special stuff. Screw it. It will have special stuff! They can’t really come after me, they are happy with the sales numbers!)
  • Orders from the store – we anticipate a 4-6 weeks timeline for vellum fulfillment due to the large number of orders and personalization requests. If you get nervous, the store page shows some of the progress. We can only do between 100-200 orders per day and sometimes less. It’s the bookplates, guys. They are slowing us down.
  • Edits for This Redacted will not Redacted Me, which we are told will land today or tomorrow. (Not nervous about this. Not at all. #sarcasm.)
150 orders going out today

Things that we will be working on shortly:

  • Additional bonus material for Guide to Kair Toren
  • Sticker sheets availability for the store – please be chalant, we promise, we will make stickers available
  • Additional bonus material for I cannot tell you because contractual obligations
  • Map for Maggie 2
  • Bonus art for Maggie 2 – starting early here, because we will need a lot
  • Bonus content for the blog: short stories and deleted scenes, possibly a serial

The app is due to go live in 8 days and we also will need beta testers. If you would like to help us a little bit, please drop your favorite quotes from our work in the comments with the book they are from. As in “If sky could dream, it would dream of dragons. – Fate’s Edge.” Right now the app has placeholder quotes and we need it to have ours instead.

PS. Jeaniene Frost has read the draft of Maggie 2 and has texted me with words like WOW and !!!!!! and then some threats, and then followed that with a 2 hour phone call. She called me evil – for some reason, Gordon was exempt – and demanded spoilers for Book 3, because quote “if redacted redacted endgame, I will not be able to handle it.”

Horde, if this ending survives the edits, we shall have to contract Hugh d’Ambray to build us a moat around our house. Just in case.

Thanks again for all the ways in which you humor the Horde. I’m sorry about our reading skills. You’d think a Book Devouring Horde would be better with reading comprehension.

Oh!! All the cool things coming! So much! Thinking fluffy, p@tient thoughts.

It sounds like Maggie 2 may be very cliffy. I’m terrible with cliff-hangers, so I tend to wait to read the book until the next installment is out. (I get that purchasing is important. The purchasing happens. The reading waits.) But then if I wait, I miss out on the BDH-wide obsessing.

    Decisions, decisions.

“Bargains with dragons never end well.”
    – Nevada, White Hot

“Yes, I’ll take it to the evening news, because I always wanted to be seen as a complete madman.”
    – Sean, Clean Sweep

“My lords! I’m not a castle. You don’t have to storm me.”
    – Dina, Sweep in Peace

“I don’t want him to be happy. I want him to be an adult!”
    – Lord Soren, One Fell Sweep

“Good, because the city needs you, and you don’t have a costume, so sending bat signals with floodlights is right out.”
    – Kate, Magic Triumphs

“It’s funny how you use logic in an argument and think it will persuade me.”
    – Kate, Magic Triumphs

“If a cultural reference flies over a man’s head, does it make a sound if nobody else gets it?”

People who don’t like you because of what you are may change their minds when they get to know you. But some people will hate you because of who you are. So excited for the app I’m on an apple phone whenever I think about Roman I always go back to his chewing out from his mother scene while she’s a bird. Reminds me of my own mom sometimes!!

    From Sanctuary Ch 6:

The Void is darkness, the Void is peace, I am within it, wrapped in its cold embrace, and I am at peace…
“You do not call. You do not answer. Is your phone broken? No? You probably unplugged it again. You do not send a word with one of your critters. For three days I have waited.”
Nothing reaches the Void for it is the beginning and end of all things…

Congratulations on all the great news!

I would think a moat is already in progress with all the rain central Texas has gotten and may get with the tropical storm that’s brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. Hugh would be proud. 🤣

    My quote:

“Arland’s jeans followed his T-shirt. He wasn’t wearing anything under them.”

“Oo,” Caldenia said. “What is the saying? Full moon!” From Clean Sweep.

And the Marshal of House Krahr enjoys the breeze in the orchard! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have favorite quotes on the quilt I made but I didn’t source the book – just the series. Here, kitty kitty is right up there.

Only two types of people drink their coffee black: cops and serial killers.

I had to give it to him, to flatter and insult a woman in one proposition took talent.

Life tried to kill me in all sorts of ways lately, but falling off a flying horse was a new and unwelcome one

All above: KD : all below IV

Males and farts. Any species, any planet, didn’t matter.

Get up dear. We do not let our enemies win. We claw their hearts out and devour them.

People do horrible things in the name of keeping things just the way they are.

Youth isn’t an excuse for willful flouting of the rules, although it is certainly the right time for it.

“Well, I knew they had to come and get us eventually,” Mad Rogan said. “But you can’t say we didn’t have an awesome time.” – Burn For Me

    Probably too long but …

“Let me quote: ‘Do you want seduction, dinners, and gifts? Seduction is a game, and if you pay enough in flattery, money, or attention, you get what you want. I thought you were above the game.’ Did you not say that to me a week before you strolled into my garage to invite me on ‘a date’?”
“Yes. I wanted to skip the bullshit.”
“So what happened? You changed your mind and now you want the bullshit?” Rogan’s phone chimed.
    “Yes, I want your bullshit.”
“Well, you don’t get to have any of my bullshit. I’m keeping it.” – White Hot

Side note, and this is totally anecdotal of course but everyone that I have gotten into Ilona Andrews has done so through Innkeeper. My sister, my step-sister, a book club, etc. Innkeeper for the series most likely to get people who’ve never read anything by Ilona Andrews to read something by y’all, and then fall down the rabbit hole of all your series.

One time it happened with Inheritance with a friend of mine who for some reason was super resistant to everything you’ve written. Now he msgs me on Steam regularly asking “so is there a sequel yet?” lmao 😉

Fate’s Edge is the third installment of The Edge (my personal favourite series) https://ilona-andrews.com/the-edge/#fate.

It’s already published and the series has ended, although you can recognize some of the cast from the crossover with The Innkeeper Chronicles – George, Jack, Sophie and everyone’s favourite showman, Gaston 🙂

Me, being very chalant, bought the Audiobook, the Kindle version and the UK hardcover for me and my bestie who introduced me to Kate about 15 years ago 😁 so I’m glad the book is thriving!

    My funny quote contribution:

“”House of Krahr!” the vampire with the banner barked quietly. “Krahr,” the other four vampires exhaled and glared at me.”

So hard to be p@tient when your writing is simply the best! Love all the quotes the BDH has left – here are 2 more-

“If he flexed again, I’d have to take emergency measures. Maybe I could kick some sand at him or something. Hard to look hot brushing sand out of your eyes. “. magic strikes.

“About 15 minutes into the drive, Conan gave up singing the sad song of his people and fell asleep “. magic Triumphs.

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve used “he’s singing the sad song of his people” when my son has a crying jag!

Insert WILD dreaming that the success of TKWNKM will lead to the Catalina Trilogy seeing the light of day. Or the shadows of night… really just hoping it will make it onto your writing list and therefore my reading list at some point. OR (okay, it’s and, because I’m greedy) other stories from that world.

    … or Puffles… or that other dragon story you shared… or… or… or… 😉

I really like how Jeaniene thinks, based on her writing and how twisty it can get…would you need a moat because of her gathering like minded troops to storm the HA castle?
I’m already preemptively in mourning over who ever died that shook you two up when you wrote it, 🤦now even before Maggie two is out it seems waiting for Maggie three will be a cause for much chalantness!
