Since the retailers are throwing the preorder out there and we are getting questions about it, we have to follow through and let you know that Hidden Legacy, specifically Nevada’s trilogy, is getting a facelift.

These covers are not final but very close to what will go to the retailers. There maybe slight color changes and finetuning.

The new editions will be in trade paperback format around April of 2024.

Let us pause and wave goodbye to half naked dude covers.

    • Mine usually update when the new covers are released. So if your ebooks are through the ‘Zon, you’ll get them automatically.

  7. I really like those! While half naked dudes have their place 😉😄, I’m glad there’s a shift in book covers to be less “heaving bosoms and bare chests” on everything that might be considered romance. I think it might draw in more readers. 😊

  12. I like the new covers. I like the covers I have now with the naked Rogan chest in Burn For Me, and the covered up Rogan chests on the other two covers. Speaking of naked Rogan chest, I just finished a re-read of Burn for Me. Now, I’m starting White Hot. Interesting timing on my part. 😉

    • I think I’m going to my local Barnes and Noble store to buy the actual paperback copies of Burn for Me, White Hot, and Wildfire so I will have the original covers. I have a feeling B & N will change the covers next year on the Nook.

      What’s that I hear? Is it the Horde storming the bookstore doors to get the original covers before April 2024? 😀

  14. The new covers are beautiful. I bought these books as they came out in paperback, and have White Hot and Wildfire in hardback also off of eBay. I was hoping these were new hardback covers so I could pick up Burn for Me. Will you be having events to support this?

  18. I don’t have a problem with the naked chests but the new covers are beautiful. I did have a problem with a broken Kindle maybe because I smacked some fighting dogs with it as that was in my hand at the time. The little shop fixed my Kindle but gave me a funny look for the books on the Home page. New rule don’t break up dog fight with Kindle

    • At least it broke for a good cause. I use the Kindle App on my iPad and I had to get a new iPad because I dropped it on the tile floor. It would have been more fun to give “breaking up dog fight” as a reason. (Though I only have cats)

  21. Actually, I just purchased WH to give to my friend as a birthday gift. She does not usually read anything romance but I wrapped it in the Hello Kitty Man cover so she’d just have to read it to figure out what it’s all about 😀

    Those are some mighty pretty covers for the next edition. Happy to see they got the carnations message got through!

    • Right, how many times the cover sucked me in and the book was TRASH…. I’m speaking from the self-publishing perspective. They have really good covers, but the writing is; more often than not bad, bad, bad…

  25. OMG they’re CARNATIONS! That is so way cool! I was like what is the white thing, crystals, OHHH! And I started jumping up and down.
    Love love love a relevant cover with specific symbology!

    • I’m so happy they got the carnations too! There have been discussion of cover recommendations and publishers not listening to what is relevant to the story for a while now, I’m glad to see what it was in regard to.

  28. Honestly… these are fine but I do prefer the old ones. I like the new Burn for Me and White Hot, but Wildfire looks odd. Maybe the photoshop isn’t as smooth/cohesive or something bc it looks a bit weird. The new White Hot is the best of the bunch. I hope new fans discover the series if they feel prejudiced against ab covers.

    Question: is there a way to stop kindle from updating my ebooks to the new covers? I have updates turned off and the cover change still happens. 🙁

    • These are not the final covers, as Ilona says in the post, so all details will be ironed out 🙂

      Not syncing your content is usually the way to preserve old versions, but I’m not certain covers follow the rule, sorry.

    • Generally those are automatic updates, so unless you stop your “sync” it will happen automatically if you buy a new book. If you stop the sync then you’ll not have new books.

  29. I did feel the old covers were a bit tacky but who cares? I’m not reading the cover, and the books are soooo good! Glad to see House Andrews has more say in things like cover art.

    • Trade paperback is the only format confirmed, but we’ll ask 🙂 . Avon are not really in the hardback business. They put out a very limited number (mostly for libraries) and once those are gone, they’re gone, no reissue happens.

    • Maybe we could petition SubPress to make a Special edition like they did with Innkeeper. That would be divine.

      • We *are* getting pretty Innkeeper from Subterranean Press soon (and pretty Iron Covenant and Blood Heir from Arcane Society too!)

  32. This is like eating apple pie. Everyone has their favorite and everyone has their own recipe. But, what’s wrong with liking all of them? I like both covers, they’re just different. One doesn’t have to be better than the other, we can like them both.

  34. Oh these look really nice. I’m currently listening to the Hidden Legacy series for the umpteenth time and I have a selfish ask. Can we get a very short story on Frinnday from that world? A short story telling about Gavin Waller apologizing to the family of the security guard? Or what happened to the pit after Emerald Blaze? Something in that world that doesn’t have to do anything with the coming stories about Arabella. I know I’m being selfish, but I just these books and I want anything and everything you can share 😊

  35. Would buy them whatever the cover.
    It’s the author’s name(s) that count.
    Does anyone remember (And I know this ages me) the old Ace and Fawcett book covers used for authors like Asimov, Rice, De Camp , Weinbaum, Wellman and others?
    They were not really appealing but the authors were whom I was after so bought them or hunted them down in any Booksale store I could find.
    These Trade paperbacks will be a great addition to my back-up copies pile.

  53. I love people on the covers of a book because I can’t visualize faces. They are blurred in my head as the movie plays out. The new covers are pretty too.

  63. I remember when Suzanne Brockman so hated a cover model (didn’t fit the description of the hero at all) on one of her books, she sent out smiley face stickers for readers to put on the cover guy’s face.

  65. I am happy because I can’t tell you how many people I recommended this series to and had them interested only to have them see the covers and bow out. Now maybe they’ll pick them up!!

    I’m definitely one who waited on this series just because of the cover. I caved eventually but the style was/is polarizing.

    I’m still pouting about the dog destroying a book because I can’t get the same cover. I generally don’t have multiple copies of books – but sometimes I do;-) (I don’t count ebooks as a copy )

    • They are due for release next spring 🙂. So far it has been local and indie bookstores which show them in their catalogue 🙂

  76. What does this mean for future books in the series? I know you said you can’t write Arabella’s right now (for obvious reasons), but if you write a book for Leon or Ragnar, which cover would they get? One that matches the old covers, for those of us who want a matched set, or these lovely new ones?

    • Further books in the Hidden Legacy series would likely be self published, so under author control rather than Avon 🙂.
      House Andrews would likely make the decision after writing the manuscript, based on genre, book cover trends at the time etc.

  77. O. M. G. The improvement. I never felt like the old covers reflected the content and people DO judge books by the covers. They were cheesy erotica covers first and foremost and not worldbuilding, character driven fantasy romances with a handful of sex scenes across the trilogy… bothered me immensely. Sexy romance sure, erotica no.

    Anyways, I’m really happy some channels of communication got opened between artist and HA. The carnation ordeal sounded terrible.

    And honestly, I wouldn’t have picked the old covers up in my Library, let alone buy them.
    I read the Hidden Legacy series and all of your other books through Libby, after being drawn into Kate Daniels world. I read for your stores not what the supposedly sexy guys on the covers seem to be promising
    Yes, we all have a different idea of interesting – but those covers just don’t do it for me. And yes, so common – half naked guys on covers are a dime a dozenon book covers anymore.

    But let me be clear -as long as the author is “Ilona Andrews” I really don’t care what the cover looks like.

  88. Carnations are my comfort flowers. In college, I would buy a mood boosting bouquet the week before spring semester finals. There were dozens of custom dyed colors of carnations at the local florist from the recent high school prom season. Rainbow serenity in a vase.

    Market research?

    Publishing is a business and covers cost money so Avon must expect to make a profit from the new covers, right?

    Or is it an inducement for the Arabella series?

    Do I remember correctly that HL is HA’s best selling series? I understand why Arabella will eventually be self-published and I wondered if Avon was disappointed.

  92. When I started Burn for Me, I remember feeling grateful that I was reading it on an e-reader, because I would have been embarrassed for anyone to have seen the half-naked dude cover, and in fact any book cover that has male chest on it I automatically won’t pick up.

    Fortunately, I had already developed my Ilona Andrews addiction, so I ignored the cover and read the book anyway. And read it, and re-read it, and re-re-read it. And waited with bated breath for the next book in the series to be available.

    I like the new covers just fine and if I were still into physical books I’d probably buy them.

    • Hell, I may buy them anyway – I have enough bookshelf space to squeeze in 3 trade paperbacks. 😊

  99. phew, thank goodness – I was put off by the old covers for a long time, even though I loved Innkeeper and knew House Andrews was a reliable author. Just couldn’t do it.

    When I did finally give Hidden Legacy a try, they were sooooo different than the covers implied.

    Catalina’s covers are good, though. They were part of what helped me get over my aversion of the Nevada covers.

    All that to say, so glad these books are getting a facelift!

  109. Well all I can say is I never minded the old covers and the new ones are fine. I think the new ones might be less objectionable to many male readers tho.

    I’m occasionally turned off by a cover, but it’s more the colors chosen. For awhile everything seemed to be coming out in what I started calling beach bright. I’m still going to buy it if the blurb grabs my interest tho.

  110. Well I love the half naked dude covers. LOVE them. Especially when the inside of the book matches. I don’t buy paperbacks that much anymore unless forced because I have digital libraries. They take up a lot of room in the bookshelves.

    How about reprinting Gunmetal Magic, Magic Rises, Magic Slays, Magic Bleeds and Magic Strikes which are getting a bit worn.

  115. Love the new covers! I have to laugh as I honestly had to turn the bookcovers over so my husband and kids would not think the book was a smut book. They are great romance books and when asked that was my response. Have a great weekend and stay cool as its hot in GA and I can’t imagine Texas right now.

  120. These are beautiful. I will admit the XXX rated cover of White Hot with the ice cycle dong dangling between Rogan’s legs had kind of grown on me. It went from oh no, did they see this before print? to all out giggle fest of they printed it. I really do like the new covers though.

  121. Felt original covers were designed by publishers specs for their specific market. Love new covers. I personally am happy when your writing is not determined by BDH begs. Even though I would personally have you stay in hidden legacy and Kate worlds forever and ever.
    One author I enjoy had endless BDH members BEG that two straight male characters have a sexual relationship. She finally added that in book 14!
    Imho we either respect the God-given gift of of writing talent or go write a knockoff fan fic not try to beg for our own vision. Poor Mod R, the brave guardian of Authorlord’s peace.

  124. I absolutely hate covers with people on them— especially
    “Bodice Rippers”. Though “Ripper Cushions” are fine. I put off starting to read the fabulous Hidden Legacy books for about a year because the covers were so off-putting. Also, we like to imagine what the hero /heroin look like and if we don’t like the way they look, we can’t get into the story.
    Imagine being anywhere in public, like a coffee house, for example, with a Fabio- style cover clasped in your fingers. These new covers don’t have to be hidden in a leather book cover and allows the author to get some recognition from passers-by Win-Win.
    These new covers are poster and tote bag worthy!

  140. I confess that I am sentimental about the old covers because the BDH made so much fuss over them. I’ll get the new ones too because when I am just a little unhinged when it comes to the things I truly enjoy. Sweep of the Heart is my favorite for the same reason, because the BDH got to play a small part in it as it grew.

  145. Those are very pretty! They definitely feel like romance novels due to the font choice, but not like sexy smutty novels, now that there’s no half naked man.

    I really like them! Don’t get me wrong – HL’s romance(s) are great, but it’s the rest of the stories and lore that really shine. Will the other trilogies be getting similar facelifts?

  146. Definitely prefer the new covers. I’m sad to say that I put off reading the Hidden Legacy Series for a couple of years because I really couldn’t cope with the “Harlequinesk” vibes of the old covers. Should have had more faith in HA!!!!

  153. I think this will increase your audience. I personally avoided this particular series, even after devouring both Kate & Innkeeper, because I’m really not into heavy-romance. But this series, while having a romance angle, is really more urban fantasy, and I think the new covers reflect that.

  164. The old covers were entertaining and cheesy but I was never a huge fan haha. When these come out, I will happily buy them and donate my old copies with smoldering shirtless Rogan to a Little Free Library somewhere to spread the Ilona Andrews goodness to the masses.

  165. New covers are ABSOLUTELY the kind I’d want on books I just leave around the house. We have therapists and other medical types in and out weekly and I wouldn’t have to put the books with naked people back on the shelf.

  168. I don’t mind a decapitated naked chest as they are usually pretty to look at and remind me to eschew that third cookie. It’s the cranially unchallenged that give me the ick. They have faces and faces have social smiles and fake eyes. It’s a massive turnoff.
    IMO, the new covers are pretty and it’s good to have a refresh. Also it removes the easy sneer material. If someone is going to sneer at my reading choices they can damn well work for it.

  171. Oh, thank goodness for new covers. I will buy this new set even though I have the old one just so I can have decent covers. It took me a really long time to try Hidden Legacy because of those covers. I finally did read them because that was when I found the blog, I could try them on Hoopla (library app) for free, and Catalina’s covers were pretty. That was a lot of factors that had to converge!

  172. Burn for Me is one of my favorite books! I’m definitely happy about new covers so I can recommend to all my friends without having to tell them to ignore the cover.

    I got my husband to read it by borrowing it for him through Libby where you don’t ever look at the cover. If it was a physical copy he wouldn’t have gotten past the shirtless man looking back at him 🤣 he loved the book!

    I think it’s a major improvement from the previous version! I love the style of Julie’s book the best, it’s just so beautiful.

    I somehow missed the blogpost people are referring to that talked about the artists messing up the carnations?!

When my friend recommended me the series (the first one that I read from HA) she right away said that I should not pay attention to the cover 😄😄😄 so I’m happy about the re-covering 😊 I wish you many new readers who were hesitant before to pick them up 😊

  177. The new covers are lovely but I prefer the originals with a rendering of the main characters…sometimes the clothing, or lack of, doesn’t represent the character well but these seem pretty on point.

    If you like naked dudes you can still have your naked dudes, it’s very easy to get naked dudes on romance books, it’s not very easy to convince your other half that there is a lot of blowing things up with magic and investigating and it’s worth a read – honest – with half naked dudes.

    (Having said that I’m not sure he’ll be convinced by carnations but I’m going to give it a shot)

    I have devoured every book & snippet you put out. My husband & I share a Kindle account. He’s a pastor so he’s got all these commentaries & historical books. Then he’s looking at these covers and looking at me like “honey, are you ok? Are we ok?” I wish I could swap old for new lol. Actually, I would pay extra for having NC-17 pages removed but I am an adult capable of respecting the choices of others & skipping content without being a jerk about it 😁

  188. I will always have a soft spot for those old (not great) covers. They completely subverted my expectations of the books. Hidden Legacy – Nevada’s arc especially – are some of my most re-read books. The covers always make me giggle. I am excited for these new releases and will have to secure my physical copies.

  189. I like the call-out reference to carnations. While I did not mind the posed couple on the previous covers (although I always wonder what kept happening to his shirts?), I like these proposed new covers. Sends the signal that “we don’t have to rely on half-naked people to sell books!”

  191. I understand the desire to have covers that are not overly sexualized. I feel like Ilona Andrews’ novels are in that cusp area of urban fantasy with the textualization of romance. Do not get me wrong the romance is there, but the urban fantasy/science fiction themes are so strong that their audience is much larger than just romance readers. So I feel the new covers align more with this thought process.

    I feel like a current trend is to highlight the urban fantasy/paranormal/science fiction elements of some romance books on the covers from publishers. I am thinking of The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yaros and the Crescent City series by Sarah Maas.

    My question for our excellent writers is when deciding on a cover is this something you think about? I know you have previously spoken of that covers are often at the discretion of the publishers, but what about when you self-publish?

  192. I like these covers much better, although the originals were definitely eye catching lol. Is there any chance we could get a reprint of Kate Daniels? I dislike mass market paperback format and would dearly love to have the Kate books in quality paperback or even hard cover, (since I am wishing why not )?

  193. I will forever treasure the Hello Kitty tshirt fix. It is my favorite thing about the old covers.
    The new covers are lovely. When my original paperbacks die from being loaned out one time too many, I will buy them with great pleasure.

  195. The new covers are nice. I thought the old covers were okay, but the half-naked dude wasn’t a good match to the description of Connor Rogan. He was built way too light.

  201. I always think of that hello kitty shirt you put on Rogan for the White Hot book. That’s probably my favorite and I laugh every time I think of it. the new covers are pretty, though nothing can beat Hello Kitty 🤣
