Maggie The Undying: Title Reveal

Blog, Maggie, Publishing News POST A COMMENT March 7, 2025 by Ilona

We interrupt this scheduled broadcast with breaking news.

Graphic showing a black placeholder cover to TOR logo. Release date: March 31, 2026. Title: This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me. Author: Ilona Andrews. Cover with sprayed edges to be revealed.

Text of the Announcement:

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews

Game of Thrones meets Outlander in This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me

When Maggie wakes up, cold, naked, and filthy in Kair Toren, a city in the kingdom of Rellas, she recognizes it immediately. It’s the world she knows intimately from the pages of an unfinished dark fantasy series she’s been obsessively reading and re-reading while waiting years for the final novel. With no idea how or why she landed in this gritty, violent world, she’s determined to survive until she can figure out how to get home with her only tools – an encyclopedic knowledge of the plot, setting, and the characters’ actions, motivations, and fates: information she can sell to the highest bidder – all while staying under the radar so as not to change the very information she plans to barter.

Soon Maggie discovers another surprising “skill”: she cannot be killed (though many will try.) And as she becomes more attached to the motley band she’s somehow gathered – which includes a former lady’s maid, a deadly assassin, a dangerous soldier, and various outrageous magic creatures – she abandons all thoughts of lying low for her own good. Instead she finds herself trying to save them, and the Kingdom of Rellas from the cataclysmic war she knows is coming.

And then there is a nice paragraph about us and our writing stuff.

To reiterate:

Series title: Maggie the Undying.

Book 1 Title: This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me.

Book 1 Release date: March 31, 2026

Why is this announcement happening now?

Because TOR has learned that the Book Devouring Horde is not to be denied. They were planning to keep the title and release date under wraps until we had the cover, but it was concluded by all that since this book will be presented at London Book Fair next week, BDH will surely find out the details and will blast them all over the internet.

Congratulations, you are mighty!

How dark and gritty is this?

As we are finishing up the edits – page 649 of 808 – actually, not that dark and gritty. The Game of Thrones in the blurb above refers to the epic fantasy nature of the series and the Outlander reference is about the portal nature of the books, where the main character is transported into another world.

There are some tough scenes, but it’s nothing that exceeds our usual. If you’ve read Kate Daniels or Hidden Legacy, you should be fine. There is no on page rape, although sexual assault does happen in this world. The book overall has an uplifting trajectory.

Is this truly a fantasy?

Yes. Knights, assassins, weird magical beasts, swordfights, unhinged mages, the whole thing. This is meant to be a world of epic fantasy tropes.

Is there romance?

Yes. There is a romantic arc, but this is not a romance. This is an epic fantasy. That said, if you are a romance reader, you will likely enjoy this.

Is this one of those stories where it was all a dream and she wakes up and nothing changed and she is back in her own world…

No. I hate the dream thing. Not a dream. We would not put you through an emotional wringer to just then make it not matter.

That’s it. More to come, as our agent likes to say.

PS. Mod R has a fun post which will go out on Monday.

I can’t wait. When I saw the date I kinda almost cried but then remembered how big the book is and still how much editing you have to do plus your other projects. 😂 I’m just so excited. Thank you for not making it a dream because I detest that. It’s disappointing and I have only come across it a couple of times in my time as a reader but I definitely don’t like it and don’t understand the purpose. Eagerly waiting for the release it sounds amazing. Will there be audible? I want both but I’d be happy with either.

  9. BT says

    March 7, 2025 at 11:00 am

I am really excited about this book. I’ve enjoyed all the snipers along the way …and I know I’ll be enthralled.
I do have one comment/request: Please doNOT let this be a dream she wakes up from at the end.
One series that I thought was very good seemed to fall apart in the last chapters with the main character waking up at home after being sick. And nothing changed about her or her life. It was very disappointing.
If you feel the need to delete this I understand. I love being part of the BDH, and don’t mean to be disrespectful.

    • Ilona says

      March 7, 2025 at 11:09 am

Absolutely not a dream. I HATE that. No worries.

      • Sonson says

        March 7, 2025 at 12:02 pm

You mean no Bobby Ewing appearing from the shower type scene?
If it’s a portal fantasy any chance of a cameo from one of our beloved characters? Gaston sounds like he would fit right in

        • Moderator R says

          March 7, 2025 at 12:05 pm

Maggie has no crossover with any of the previous series, it is entirely new and set in a new world 🙂

        • Dave says

          March 7, 2025 at 2:29 pm

To be fair, the Bob Newhart this was a dream ending was an all time great

            Yup.

          • dclewis55 says

            March 8, 2025 at 11:35 pm

It was an “all time great” because it was the first time somebody dared to end a TV series that way. Fortunately, it hasn’t become a TV trope.

      • Liesl says

        March 7, 2025 at 2:43 pm

I stopped reading a series because it seemed to finish with a reasonably happy ending (after quite a few books, no less) and then years later the author came back and started another book in the series with main char waking up to find reasonably happy ending was a dream. BOOOOOO! So glad HA does not do that.

        • Ronda says

          March 8, 2025 at 3:23 am

I know the series you are talking about. I was really upset too because I liked the ending. But I went ahead and read the new book and got sucked in again. Who doesn’t love revisiting “old friends”?

    • Moderator R says

      March 7, 2025 at 11:11 am

I really can’t say 🤐, but I can reinforce that House Andrews have never met a trope they haven’t twisted and tortured hehe. No character of theirs will go through their challenges and remain exactly the same as the status quo.

      • Lada says

        March 11, 2025 at 8:01 am

And that’s why they have earned the descriptor of “titans of fantasy and romance”. Because they are and that’s why the hoard loves them so.

Taking the perspective from Maggie’s brief appearance Gertrude Hunt, I’ll think “could I ever do this?” while reading.

        • Sean Trobaugh says

          March 7, 2025 at 6:33 pm

So I read this Frinterview again and realized a profound truth.

Maggie is us. Perhaps an idealized us, but us none the less. She is the obsessive BDH member, the fanatical Star Trek fan with the ship maps and each of the James Blish books and knows the names of the episodes by heart (cough my wife cough). She is what all of us wish we could be if we were in that situation. She is the obsessive series rereading Superfan.

Maggie is the exact opposite of Pogo’s “we have met the enemy and he is us”. Because of the awesomeness of HA, “We have met the hero, she is us”
HA made an awesome hero of awesomeness *out of their own fan base*!!

I salute you HA, well done.

          • Moderator R says

            March 7, 2025 at 6:36 pm

Yes, that is exactly right 🙂
Maggie is a wonderful adventure, a mega-world build, but at its core, it’s a love letter to and for fandom!

🎉 Congratulations what an awesome name and can’t wait to see the cover. But, but, 2026 a whole year away. Wow. 😮 this feels like torture of a different kind. How can we push them to bring the date forward? Come on BDH to help me here.

    • Mechcat says

      March 9, 2025 at 12:19 am

Nope, no pushing. We must remain fluffy! The authors write(and edit and…) as the authors will. Whatever day the book arrives will b a good day. (Hands around brushes to help the Horde maintain optimal fluffiness.) Whatever book/snippets/etc arrive will b accepted gratefully. We want HA to b happy and have lowest possible stress. Fluffy hordes have happy authors. Happy authors produce the best books. This produces fluffy hordes with lots of awesome books to hoard and reread during the trying times between the rare golden hours spent on first reads. It’s ok, not all hordes have learned to protect their authors. But the BDH is ferociously protective of HA. We know where our fur is fluffed.

One question – what does Sprayed Edges mean?? assuming this doesn’t have anything to do with the story??

    • Moderator R says

      March 7, 2025 at 12:18 pm

Books with sprayed edges have the edges of their pages painted or printed with color or patterns.

That is going to make the decision on whether to go with a physical book or ebook version very difficult (although having said that, I have the ebook and physical version of many HA books).

Congratulations, it’s nice to have a publishing date! I am crossing my fingers that there will be an online book birthday party!

      • Ezakra says

        March 9, 2025 at 9:48 am

        Wow.
I am constrained. When I deploy, I have to have the ebook version to read on Kindle. I learned this on my first combat deployment to Iraq in 2009. Hundreds of books in my cargo pocket, with a built in light source for when the C-130 cuts the lights in the cargo area, or we are encamped without light sources. Thus I only buy ebooks.
But now I am conflicted, because sprayed edges…. Nice.
I will always buy ebooks, but for this I will embrace the power of “And”.

Thanks for the answer Mod R. I haven’t purchased a physical adult book in a long time (S Boynton kids books by the thousand? yes) since i’m 100% ebook but this may have changed my mind!

    • Kah says

Sprayed edges are a new special edition book trend. They literally take the edge of the book and spray paint an image onto it. They can be anything from simple colors to elaborate scenes etc

      • Mechcat says

        March 9, 2025 at 12:30 am

Wait, not just painted one color? Wow, and with 800+ pages that’s a lot of area to make a cool picture. I went pretty much all ebook during covid and stayed there, but this I may need to buy because it sounds too awesome not to own. Are there pictures on the top and bottom as well as the sides of the pages?

Is Maggie a Witcher? If we have Kair Toren we also might visit Kaer Morhen

    • Ilona says

      March 7, 2025 at 12:25 pm

“In Welsh, “kair” or “caer” (pronounced [kɑːɨr]) means “stronghold,” “fortress,” or “citadel,” and is a common placename element, often written as a prefix, like in “Caernarfon” and “Caerdydd” (Cardiff).”

So no, Maggie is not a Witcher, and Project Red did mine Welsh for their place names, just like we all. Who can blame us? It’s an awesome word.

      • Rangda says

        March 7, 2025 at 12:44 pm

it was not Project Red that did come up with the name Kaer Morhen but the orginal author/creator of the Witcher Andrzej Sapkowski – the games are based on his books – the firs short story was published in 1986.
sorry for the ranting but I am always so sad when he is not credited for his creation.

        • Ilona says

          March 7, 2025 at 2:15 pm

          Correction noted and fair.

Having read the original novellas in Russian translation 40 years ago, I missed Blood of Elves, because by that point I was in the States and our local library did not carry it. I remember trying to read it later in life and I bounced for whatever reason, so most of my Witcher trivia is game based.

          • Rangda says

            March 7, 2025 at 6:12 pm

            Thank you ❤

I grew up with his books before the games and movies. He himself supposedly gets very irritadet if people make the mistake and attribute the game to be the orginal creation which still happens to him sometimes

Love you and your creations ❤

Kate and Dina and Nevada have gotten me throught some very hard time in my life – and I promise to make a lot of ranting if anyone mixes up anything up in the future if/when you have a big multimedia fiefdom 😁😁😁

    March 7, 2025 at 1:19 pm

    Awesome 😄
So that big 808 number, would that be the number of pages in Word or equivalent text editor? Because that wouldn’t translate to pages in a finished book necessarily… Meaning the actual book could have more or fewer pages depending on the format chosen… Never mind me, just trying to manage my expectations here 🙈
(But regardless of pages, you’re 80% through! You can do this! Go HA!!!)

    • Moderator R says

      March 7, 2025 at 1:21 pm

Word pages, the manuscript is not finished yet, so it has not been formatted 🙂

      • Sabrina says

        March 7, 2025 at 2:54 pm

Right, so no expectations for the final length, except “lots” – which is probably my favourite number when it comes to good books 😉😉😉

        • Mechcat says

          March 9, 2025 at 12:47 am

Well, and they still have entire editing passes to do, which sometimes results in chunks of pages being removed. But, since HA is so good to the BDH, they often end up posted here at some point. So I’m looking at it that once it exists, it will inevitably make its way to us. So even if the final book page count is lower, it’s ok.

The BDH attracts the written pages as if by gravity- it’s a natural force that is not well understood, but is inescapable. Or maybe I’ve been watching too much NOVA…

Thanks to HA and Mod. R for their care and feeding of their horde. We’re very excited, and may need a minute…

  88. Grace says

    March 7, 2025 at 1:21 pm

Congrats HA. It’s going to be a long wait, but worth it!

My first experience of sprayed edges was Twilight many years ago, in red of course.

Followed by Harry Potter, would you like your “Goblet of Fire” in Hufflepuff yellow, Griffyndor red, Slytherin Green or Ravenclaw blue? We chose blue as it was a pretty purple blue colour….

It looks like they have taken artistry much further these days to beautiful images.

Note for the inexperienced (unless the technology has moved on…). Don’t leave your beautiful sprayed edge books on the bathroom counter. Exposure to water causes bleeding.

Which was sort of appropriate for Twilight… but not for Maggie!
