After a weekend of excitement and prayers for p*tience to last us until the release of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me, it’s time to return to our Iron Dogs.

Since House Andrews gifted us with chapters from the first draft of Hugh 2, I thought we should test our memory of where it all began! And if it should happen to prompt us into rereads, we will gladly walk into the fray, like the fearless Devouring Horde that we are.

      • Hehe, I can see the stats, so not sure about that.
        2 of the questions have below a 20% correct answer rate and a 3rd barely made 36%.
        There’s only a pass and fail result, however 🙂

        • So, all green doesn’t mean all my answers were correct? And everybody who passes gets Warlord?

          • There is no indicator of correct/incorrect answer for each question or the total points, I removed all those options, because people fixate and nitpick the scores too much – clearly I haven’t made enough efforts :D. If you got the result Warlord, you answered more than 50% of the questions correctly.

            • But how will I compare myself to others and either lord it over them or sink into a deep depression if I don’t know my score? 😀 School gave me permanent performance anxiety, I must know. Even when the results don’t matter, like in “Whose Line is it Anyways”. 😀

              Please take this as a joke, and not as the school-induced trauma from 20 years ago that I’m definitely over.

    and hello ? garlick chip cookies? look, I’m willing to try it… I got chat gpt to make me a recipe, sounds amazing and horrible all at once 😂 Might actually try it minus the chocolate chips and vanilla extract 🤔🤔🤔

    ### **Garlic Chip Cookies Recipe**
    **Makes about 18-24 cookies**

    #### **Ingredients:**
    – 1 bulb of garlic (for roasted garlic puree)
    – 2 tbsp olive oil
    – 2 tbsp crispy fried garlic chips (store-bought or homemade)
    – 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
    – ½ tsp baking soda
    – ½ tsp salt
    – ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
    – ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
    – ½ cup (100g) light brown sugar, packed
    – 1 large egg
    – 1 tsp vanilla extract
    – ½ cup white or dark chocolate chips (optional)
    – ¼ tsp black pepper (optional, for a slight spicy kick)

    #### **Instructions:**
    1. **Roast the Garlic:**
    – Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    – Slice the top off the garlic bulb, drizzle with olive oil, wrap in foil, and roast for 30-40 minutes until soft and caramelized.
    – Let it cool, then squeeze out the soft garlic cloves and mash into a puree.

    2. **Prepare the Garlic Chips (if making homemade):**
    – Thinly slice 2-3 garlic cloves.
    – Heat 1-2 tbsp olive oil in a pan over medium heat, add garlic slices, and fry until golden brown and crispy (about 1-2 minutes). Remove and drain on paper towels.

    3. **Make the Dough:**
    – In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
    – In a separate large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
    – Mix in the roasted garlic puree, egg, and vanilla extract until combined.
    – Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
    – Fold in the garlic chips and chocolate chips (if using).

    4. **Bake the Cookies:**
    – Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    – Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    – Scoop tablespoon-sized portions onto the sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
    – Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden but centers remain soft.
    – Let cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

    5. **Enjoy!** The cookies will have a balanced sweet-savory flavor, with the garlic chips adding an umami crunch.

    • As usual, AI really struggles with math. That’s more sugar than flour, I’m not sure of the texture for that cookie, but let us know the results 🙂

      I might go all savoury, maybe on an oat base, with sundried tomatoes and some rosemary, like a bruschetta in cookie form.

      • scottish oat cakes done with garlic and butter, no sugary stuff, more like a garlic short bread.. no I really can’t tell you what it would taste like.. I can imagine it though. Fair warning I love my garlic

      • hoooo. you should see AI with engineering! I am an adjunct teaching engineering to architects (think of it like basic communication skills and it makes more sense). some of my students tried to get the robots to do their homework. one didn’t even bother to hide it.

        concept questions were fine. but lookup on a chart questions where the numbers have changed over time (10 seconds for a human student to answer) or reference an image AI got wrong. I also got broken html code, answers formatted a la 2000 textbook (still wrong and hello? Who does that), and answers telling me how one might solve the problem.

        I sent the homework to the Dean and felt very secure in my real engineering day job.

    • Chocolate chips with garlic puree? Uh. no thanks. What a waste of hood chocolate chips. 😝

      • I have had confit garlic that was exceptionally sweet – maybe it had honey added, it certainly tasted similar to it. I can see it match with chocolate (maybe dark?) without it being a complete disaster.

    • Garlic allergy here. I’m not sure I can adequately express how disturbing I find the concept of garlic chip cookies. But I have learned to always check everything, as there is garlic in some really odd foods. Like French toast, once. Why? I experience commercials for restaurants with a big garlic event as more of a public service warning me to stay far away. But, ya, I think Mod. R is right that some of the quantities in the recipe look off.

  27. Winner! 100% correct..does this indicate a shameful BDH mania or a halo of smartness?

    Although I answered bucky’s horse breed mix -Andalusian and Percheron I still believe he is a magical unicorn as well.
    As I share too often I first rode an aging stable horse named Buckshot (in summer of 1963) so I am doubly attached to Bucky.

    • The quiz does not display the score total, so I’m not sure where you got the 100% correctness. In fact, your one example shows you got at least one question wrong 🙂

      • Thanks for this clarification, Mod R. I was looking for my score based on many of the comments above. The Bucky question had to be [Edit Mod R], right? We probably all got Warlord status just for taking the quiz?

        • No, you have to score over 50% correct to get warlord 🙂 , there are 2 possible results, pass and fail. I can tell you that not many people scored 100% (about 15 so far).

          • Darn! And here I was thinking that I got a perfect score (that’s what I think anyway ;).

  36. Umm, can’t we see the correct answers after the quiz? I may have been congratulated on my “unmatched knowledge”, but it’s not really true. My knowledge is very matched. And outmatched. And full of best guesses, of which some may have even been correct. Funny thing is that I re-read Hugh nr. 1 not that long ago. Without that, I’m pretty sure I would’ve failed the quiz.

    • You got over 50% of the questions right, which *is* a high score 🙂 I want to avoid exactly this particular focus on the points, which makes people unhappy and lashing out.

    After I took the test. Then I was reading through the comments and saw that this was pass/ fail. So I went back to take it again to fail. I loved both of the results! Mod R are you really really get us 🙂 I know it’s because you’re one of us – lol!

    Just imagine: I was following the most natural approach picking the funniest answers and I received that wonderful piece of information as a result.

    • Iron and Magic started life as a an April Fools joke on the blog 🙂. It had a fake announcement with a fake cover and the ‘outrageous’ idea that Hugh d’Ambray would be redeemed into a hero.

      The Horde said “Bet.” and started demanding the book from bookstores and librarians and put it on Goodreads. So House Andrews had no choice but to write it in the end.

      The joke version of the book (the Warlord Price) was not about Landon Nez 🙂. There text of the fail result says that Landon Nez had a vampire replace your copy of the real book with the prank one, and that’s why your answers were wrong, but you can try again.

  61. I was uncertain about the Bucky question. I answered with the quote from the book even though my superior logic and reasoning has concluded from the text that Bucky is indeed a unicorn. Which does make Hugh the sparkliest of princesses… Does that make Hugh the Shining One? Do we pray to him in our hour of need? 🧐🤨

    • I hadn’t actually seen any of that content, but it looks super fun, will definitely have an insomnia spiral or two through it, thanks for mentioning it!

      Jimothy, Johnaford, Weenerhut the 3rd, (and to a far more popular and intense level, Chad) are all internet culture shorthands for a certain type of clueless and usually exceptionally privileged male. The female equivalents are Tragedeigh and all the rest of the Millennial poorly aged hipster names and associated stereotypes.

      I’m not 100% sure of Jimothy’s satirical origin, it is lost to the sands of time (aka meme history), but I’m pretty certain the YouTube creator didn’t come up with it. It appears all the way back in US The Office episodes, so it was already in use two decades ago 🙂
