"buy my book", Blog, Maggie, Publishing News, Reader Questions, Recommended Read POST A COMMENT March 11, 2025 by Ilona

Mod R presented me with a list of questions. Let us get to it.

When will the preorder be availlable?

We don’t know. Well, that was easy. The usual MO is to wait until the cover is done because people tend to preorder in higher numbers once the cover is up. Maybe having the cover is proof that the book exists?

When will the cover be available?

We don’t know that either. I’m knocking these out of the park today.

Can you make Tor publish it faster?

Hahahaha. No.

Will there be opportunities for signed books or bookplates?

Absolutely.

Will there be a e-book and audio version or just print?

There will be all the things. Tor is fully behind this release. So here is how this book sold: it went to several publishers on Thursday and on Friday morning Tor came back with an offer so impressive, that our agent called for an emergency zoom meeting to discuss it. They read it that evening, and they really wanted this book. So there will be everything: ebook, print, audio. The whole kaboodle. We’ve discussed maps and extras.

Will there be special editions/ hardcovers/ book boxes, since it’s Tor? We want all the special editions (Fairyloot, Broken Binding, Forbidden Planet and Illumicrate mentioned specifically)

We don’t know. But our personal feeling is that yes, there likely will be special editions. We are working on some extra scenes, deleted scenes, and so on.

Can you share a cover artist at least? Are you using Luisa Preissler?

We don’t know who the cover artist is. No idea. It probably will not be an object cover, simply because there have been so many of them that it’s hard to come up with a new distinct image. The direction is more toward illustrative rather than graphic. And that’s all I can say.

A note about Luisa Preissler: Luisa recently changed her creative direction. She is taking a break from covers and is working on landscapes instead. She now paints beautiful gouache art. Here is that story in Luisa’s own words and images, and here is how her first gallery went.

(She is teaching a class on her Patreon and I really want to take it. I haven’t yet, because I paint very, very badly. Like hilariously badly. Only my singing is worse.)

So although Hugh 1’s cover is in desperate need of a makeover and we would love her to do both Hugh 1 and 2, we are not sure that she will have an opening in her schedule. We will definitely bring it up, but we might have to go in the new direction.

And now you know why sometimes we do things other than sequels to the beloved series. Artists, writers, and musicians don’t usually stay in one lane. Creativity is a layered, branching expression of one’s inner self. As we go through life, the direction of creativity changes because we are affected by events that happen to us and the world around us. It is the natural evolution of us as human beings.

Will it be translated into French/ German/ Spanish etc?

Probably. Let me tell you a little bit about foreign rights so you will have a cool industry insight.

Twice a year, the publishing world gets together at two major book fairs: London and Frankfurt. The Frankfurt one is held in Germany and it is the largest book fair based on the sheer number of publishers who attend. It usually happens in October. London Book Fair, which is almost as large, is happening this week, March 11-13. It is held in London, to no one’s surprise, and both our agency and Tor will have a presence.

These are not reader-centric events, but rather events where publishers and agents from all over the world get together and talk about upcoming projects and sell and buy foreign (to them) rights.

While we don’t expect to have offers from foreign publishers, because the final edit was just turned in and hasn’t been accepted yet, This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me, and this was so long to type, let’s call it This Kingdom for short, This Kingdom will be “a topic of conversation.” At least that’s what our agent told us.

To sum up: yes, we expect interest from foreign publishers and we will let you know what is happening with that when we know something ourselves.

Does that mean you are going to London?

No, London Book Fair is not for the authors. But we would love to go to London. And Ireland.

Why are you using comps to announce the book?

We are not. Tor is using comps to announce the book. Comps are mostly for industry insiders to let them quickly identify what the book is about. For some reason, you guys are really concentrating on them, but it is a minor detail.

Will the series be called Maggie the Undying?

Yes. We all loved Maggie as a title, but unfortunately it’s really hard to go to book 2 with it. Something has to beat out the Undying. And then you end up with Maggie the Undaunted or something equally silly.

Is it a series or a standalone?

It is definitely not a standalone. The original plan was for three. The caveat here is that Book 1 ended up being enormous, so Book 2 will likely be equally so, and we may pack the story into two books instead of three. But for now, three is where it is.

Are the 808 pages Word pages or formatted pages and what will be the final length of the book?

So if you take Magic Bites and Magic Burns and put them together, that will be about the right thickness. Typical KD was 90-95K, because the publisher wanted it that way, and this is around 180K.

Is there romance or isn’t there? How spicy is it?

It has strong romantic elements, meaning that you can yank romance out of the book and it would be still make sense. Like Kate books – you can remove Kate and Curran’s relationship and they will still make sense. The romance is slow burn. You will just have to read it.

So is this a twist on the concept from Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint?

Oh good question. Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint is a manhwa, a Korean comic, and a webnovel.

The manhwa is available on Webtoon and the official translation of the webnovel might have been up for preorder some time recently. Not sure about that one.

ORV throws the reader into his favorite book as a character. He starts tugging at strings and influencing events. This is a common trope used by a lot of portal (isekai) manhwa and anime.

The variation on that is being thrown into a video game. If you are in the market for an anime with that theme, there are so many, but I want to mention two here just for fun. First, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! The heroine ends up stuck as a villainess in the dating video game with hilarious results. Vegetables! All the vegetables ever.

The trailer, which is below, doesn’t do it justice. This anime is available on Crunchyroll. Although the trailer is subbed, the anime is dubbed and the dub is pretty good. (Link for newsletter readers.)

Once you watch that, there is this gem in Hidive.

From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated! has the exact same premise, but he is a middle aged dad, which leads to ridiculous moments, such as him telling another girl that her presence in the magical academy could mean only one thing – her parents love her very much and they want her to succeed.

But back to the Omniscient Reader, yes, This Kingdom has the similar premise of a reader being thrown into a book and changing events as they unfold. But Omniscient Reader is structured like a LitRPG, meaning it has a video-game like narrative. The character goes through a sequence of escalating fights with emphasis on classes and skills. It has more in common with Solo Leveling than Maggie.

(That genre is super fun. In fact, we are working on a very derivative novella in that genre on and off in our spare time because it’s been nagging at me and Gordon suggested that we need to download it onto page and out of my brain.)

This Kingdom has zero LitRPG elements. It is all about political intrigue and fantasy kingdoms, which is where the GOT comparison comes from. There are no defined classes or skills, there is no system window, etc. There are heists and murders and to quote Maggie, “Deadly swordmasters, thieves prowling through moonlit streets, dark magicians, ruthless nobles, hideous monsters…” It’s is meant to be an archetypical fantasy.

So a little bit different. A better comp would be the Lout of Count’s Family, which is available on Tapas. Highly recommend. And now we have it in novel form, available on Amazon and presumably everywhere else. Tada!

Lout of Count’s Family

I haven’t read the novel, but the manhwa is awesome. He is the best dragon dad ever.

Since Maggie is getting sprayed edges, is there any news for a Kate hardcover/sprayed edges, uniform box set release?

We don’t know anything about sprayed edges or where they will go or what they will look like. We first saw it on Tor’s announcement.

We’ve brought up the possibility of reissuing KD in hardcover to Ace, which originally published that series. They are not interested in pursuing that at this time. As much as we all love Kate, it’s an older series.

How are you feeling about all of this?

Cautiously excited. For me there is a little bit of a disconnect, because in my head Maggie was a small weird book, and now This Kingdom reads like a medieval thriller. The book has grown bigger and more vivid. But despite the many editorial passes – or maybe because of them – I love the story. I love the world. I love Maggie and her fierce fandom heart. We both hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it.

Will Derrick and Julie’s story ever make it into print? I understand that they are part of an older story, but they deserve to get together, and we’d appreciate their story. Thank you.

The authors have said that Julie 2 will happen once the timeline of the other books catches up. That requires more in Wilmington first.

Seconded! Who cares if all you end up with is a bunch of muddy brown canvases and a better working appreciation of why someone else’s work is good.

Go! Paint some canvases! Try! Fail!

Thank you for the info. Heh. I always want your books to be longer, but I also always gulp them down at midnight as soon as they are available. I may need to just call off work the next day for Maggie – the length + being functional the next day may not be an option. (To be clear, I’m deliriously happy with this quandary.)

Thank you! That was quite interesting about the new book. I rather expect Tor will drum up a lot of interest for foreign publishers. Everyone knows how much they’ve spent on this already for one thing. I rather imagine Tor will be going to the Frankfurt book fair as well. Mwahahaha

Will look into at least your tapas recommendation, I still have money to spend there. I tend to lose interest within a few episodes, but your comment on best dragon dad grabbed me 🤣

Great news about Maggie, but I’m still obsessing about Hugh. Do you have a title yet? Will you keep Magic from book one or Iron? Or both? I just realized the significance of ‘metal puppies’ when I redid yesterday’s quiz this morning. Oh, and after the US, in what country do your books sell the most? Hope you are taking this week slow and easy after the marathon.

Does Hollywood send anyone to the Frankfurt or London book fairs? Seems like that would be a good way for them to get a jump on what’s about to release so they can then get a jump on buying the rights for TV, movie, or streaming series.

I know KD is an older series but she is like and old friend that you don’t see for a long time but when you do you love to catch up and it feels like you have never been apart. I was so glad when you did the Wilmington set. Then we had Blood heir and I want to know what happened to Derek and… yep it is so easy to run down the rabbit hole. I enjoy this world and wish it could go on forever. But I do understand that a new character and new worlds are out there to be discovered and explored. Thank you for sharing this talent with all of the readers.

I am super excited for This Kingdom and Maggie, but I didn’t miss that little titbit about working on and off on “a very derivative novella”!

I’ve been on a progressive / cultivation / litrpg reading theme for the past several months and am mostly loving the books I’ve read.

You have blown my mind and even without reading any, I am now torn on which of your not for publication / funsies I want to actually happen more, this or Puffles.

Now to do some praying, or spells, or bribery. . .

    I guess I am a true horde member. . .

    • Moderator R says

I was wondering how that managed to slip so smoothly under the radar 😅. I’m also on a huge LitRPG kick, and I’m struggling to find things of a certain quality, so I’m drooling over that news!

I’m guessing you’ve probably read the big ones like He Who Fights With Monsters, Dungeon Crawler Carl, Beware of Chicken and Heretical Fishing; but have you tried Rise of the Cheat Potion Maker and A Budding Scientist in a Fantasy World? I enjoyed both those series in different ways. I’ve just started Rise of the Manor Lord – too soon to tell but seems tolerable so far. It’s difficult to sort out what looks good and what doesn’t, plus I’m not going the Royal Road route. I’ve been trawling Reddit for recommendations but hit and miss really.

Have you read the Second Age of Retha series by AM Sohma? It’s my absolute favorite LitRPG series and I re-read it often because it makes me literally laugh out loud. But be warned that the series isn’t finished yet and is currently on pause. The third book does end in an ok place though, you are just left with some questions still be answered.

I got introduced to the genre of litrpg novels by the Threadbare series (Andrew Seiple). I personally prefer it in manga/manhua and/or anime form, turns out, but that might be because novel wise I’ve been on a sci-fi bender recently 🤔

So happy for you and for us, the BDH, Maggie is on its way! I’m not going to count the days!

My singing and painting are about the same, but I am going to take a watercolor class eventually. First I have to finish cleaning out my office to make room for new projects!

If the first book is the success that the publisher is hoping for, I suspect that any sign that book 2 will end the story will lead to a display of sad puppy-dog eyes while waving large sums of money under your nose. 😅

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me – Who made this title, you or the publisher? Isn’t she killed a couple of times in the snippets you gave us? Undying is so much cooler and possibly more accurate. 😉 Sometimes book titles just seem weird.
Regardless of Title, it will be read within 24 hours of release!

    • Moderator R says

The title was a collaboration between authors and publishers, but very close to the initial concept of House Andrews.
The kingdom never kills her- as she is undying, as the series name still proclaims 🙂

I have to admit to a bit of pride and a lot of amusement at how often the detective skills of the BDH as a whole have come up in these conversations about Maggie. TOR needs to prepare.

We are a mighty and very very HUNGRY Horde. If we are not fed, we seek out food (information)— or we just wildly speculate amongst ourselves (freely sharing with anyone who happens to be online with us) until someone in authority feels compelled to drag us back to reality. 🙂

Thank you for all the Q & A!! So much going on!! Oh, to be an aide-de-camp for an agent or publisher at the London and/or Frankfurt book fairs. Sigh of longing!!
And also thanks for the links to Luisa Pressler! Her new genre of paintings are gorgeous! I am also moved by Monet – not an artist, but I have loved the Water Lilies since jr. high. (50+ years!!)

If the one you’re playing with comes out anything like that you will definitely have a new audience trolling your back catalogue 😊

Wow, I’m rarely so early for a new blog post. Only 48 comments! For whatever reason the e mail announcing a new blog comes a day AFTER the blog is posted on the site. I try to remember to check the site early and often, but I am still often further away from a new post than being near the right now stage of the post. (When was it posted? Right now!) I like to read from the site because my browser does dark mode and my e mail doesn’t. So when I saw an e mail announcing a new blog I came here, and to my surprise (and because you apparently did two consecutive days of posting) I’m in early! Yay! Thanks for the Maggie questions snuck in after the Hugh questions. I can’t wait.

Maybe one of the genre publishers could tackle Kate Daniels, like The Broken Binding, Grim Oak Press (their Dresden Files are fantastic editions), Subterranean Press and the like might be an option? It’s such a good series and a hardcover edition would be great.

And everything about the new book and series sounds fantastic. I’m so looking forward to it!

I’m so incredibly excited for this story. I think for the BDH it hits so close to home for many of us because of how huge our own fandom hearts are! Like, what in the world would we do if we were dropped into post shift ATL right at the beginning of Kate’s story? Like, hello? We’d *need* to be undying to get to the 3rd book. It’s like we all are Maggie and we’re already cheering for her before we even get the book!!

Now is it possible to have the script also order the book when it finds the pre-order?

I love that HA (best acronym ever!) is having fun dabbling with writing aLitRPG for giggles. However, all this talk of The Kingdom and LitRPG’s has me thinking of all sorts of randomness, like The 10th Kingdom.

Does anyone else remember this miniseries? I know it doesn’t technically level up, but it has that vibe, and Scott Cohen was a hoot. I mean, if you’re looking for something to distract yourself from the 2026 deadline, I’d highly recommend watching this. Lots of fun!

A bit sad that Luisa Preissler doesn’t illustrate books anymore. I loved her covers, both for Ilona Andrews and for Lindsey Buroker. She draws interesting female characters that convey strength but still look quite pretty. Of course, as an artist she needs to go where her creativity takes her. I wish her all the best in her painting career.

My absolute favorite fantasy isekai is Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill. Its also available on crunchyroll for anyone who wants to try their first foray into this genre. For romance isekai, I recommend Why Raeliana Ended Up in the Duke’s Mansion and Doctor Elise: Royal Lady with the Lamp.

Could a reprinting be done through someone else and does house Andrews have any interest in pursuing that with all that’s going on for them right now?
