The working writer dude has been named. I present to you Edgar Allen Prose, from now on known simply as Edgar.
“It is truly my greatest honor to be given a name. Here I was, adrift, resigned to anonymity that is a constant companion of our profession. It haunts me the way it haunts all writers, that desperate struggle to become a household name just so I could then rue the day I had become a household name and publicly regret my celebrity. I longed for the days when I can attend a gathering of my peers and hear them say, ‘I heard you’re moving up in the world.” And I of course, will hang my head and respond with a tinge of melancholy, ‘Alas, one must surrender freedoms in the name of success. It is a heavy burden, but I shall bear it.’ Thank you for making my dreams come true, BDH!”
Edgar Allen Prose
Questions
“I’m a reasonably patient woman. However, this is the third time we’re having this conversation. It will be the last time. Words are clearly not working. You simply don’t care. Rewards are not working either. I’ve never been a fan of corporal punishment, so that’s right out. I guess I will have to lock you up.”
The culprit stared at me, his mouth hanging open.
“If I see you anywhere near Princess or any of her siblings again, all of your free roaming privileges will be revoked. I won’t tolerate any further assaults. Do I make myself clear?”
Nothing.
I stared at him. “I mean it, Grendel. If you don’t stop chasing the chickens, I will put you on a leash and lock you into a kennel at night.”
The giant poodle whined softly, his ears and tail drooping.
“You know where I stand. Go on!”
He slunk away. I patted Princess’s feathers, as she snuggled against me on my lap. “Who is the best chicken ever? You are.”
What kind of a chicken did Kate see in Magic Claims?
A lavender Oprington hen. They are very sweet and cuddly.
What is the wildest fan theory you have ever read?
You are not ready for this. Read at your own risk.
Saiman, throwing one long leg over the other in a chair
“As you know, I have a complicated ancestry. While it is true that Loki is my grandparent and the origin of my polymorph powers, I have never been able to shapeshift in the traditional sense of the word. I can’t assume the form of an animal. I can only indulge in a variety of human forms. So while it is true that my grandfather once shifted into a mare, mated with stallion Svaðilfari, and gave birth to Sleipnir, who became Odin’s horse, I would like to state in the strongest possible terms: I am NOT Tulip’s mother…”
Gordon says
We owe that fella a dinner or something. We have used his image a great deal. He probably has no idea even.

I was thinking he’d love finally having a name!

Sorry, I cannot hear you over the sound of Saiman and Bucky, sitting in a meadow, N-E-I-G-H-I-N-G!

idk I get all confused with all the Loki origin stories that different authors adapt and create 😁
Tulips mother though 😂😂😂
I love it.

I looked at the post title and automatically assumed we would have another tale of Texas arachnids! Love the pictures, especially eight-legged Sleipnir….Thanks for the chuckle!

Saiman Tulip’s mother?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Uh no. I never thought Saiman was Tulip’s mother. I always thought it was Bucky as Tulip’s father and either a Persian unicorn or another magic horse as her mother. Nope, nope, nope to Saiman. 🤪🫣
Amy Ann says
When I read that first paragraph I thought the BDH had misbehaved and we were being taken to the woodshed!

So, one of my favrite things about the Sleipnir story is when Loki shows up, several months after the “lead Svaðilfari away”, the entirety of the Aesir and Vanir were just like, “My the weirdest think Loki has done”. No one said a thing…. 🤣
sarafina says
Yes, that is an far-fetched theory.

Carla says
Lmaooooo! That was great. As a little girl, my mom bought some Leghorn hens for meat. By the time she got them home there were 3 eggs in the cage so she kept them for layers. I was 4 and turned them into pets. They were my “Pretty Girls” and I would pick them up and carry them around. I’d also sit with them on my lap and pet them like a cat. They passed from honorable old age having mothered many generations.
Lir says
Question; can Saiman be mother and father to the same child?
Moderator R says
No, and not just because of logistical difficulties hehe.
As he explains to Kate in Questinable Client, he cannot be anyone’s mother:
“I’m male, and while I may construct a vaginal canal and a uterus on occasion, I’ve never had cause to recreate ovaries. And if I did, I suspect they would be sterile. Unlike the male of the species, women produce all of their gametes during gestation, meaning that when a female infant is born, she will have in her ovaries all of the partially developed eggs she will ever have. The ovaries cannot generate production of new eggs, only the maturation of existing ones. The magic is simply not deep enough for me to overcome this hurdle.”
Andrews, Ilona. Small Magics, NYLA Publishing 2015. Questionable Client.. Kindle Edition, page 45
rlaWTX says
The fact that this has actually been answered is one of the glories of HA!
Dave says
This has also been disproved. Women generate gametes all through their adult life.
And because it has to be said, Saiman is not denying paternity…
Moderator R says
I’m not sure about “disproved” 🙂.
The research into ovarian stem cells that can go through oogenesis is still in its early days – the strongest data is from less than a decade ago, and not all scientists are convinced by it https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-14936-3
Questionable Client is almost 15 years old by contrast- and the point still stands. Saiman cannot produce a fertile female womb- because his creators said so 😁.
Patricia Schlorke says
I can see you sticking your tongue out Mod R, and also saying “so there”. 🙂
Moderator R says
😂 I’m not, I promise!
But with House Andrews, it’s hard sometimes to remember the characters are just ideas and not real people.

A. G. Boggs says
Omg. I almost fell off the sofa over Saiman’s comment. Too, too htsterical.
A. G. Boggs says
p.s. Did anyone else notice the horse had only SEVEN legs and 2 tails? (Sorry, ocd and I compulsively count items I see.)
Strike says
LoL…
Nope… but I did notice that the back legs of the back horse are VERY close to each other … which imo … makes it look like a shadow on one leg when it’s probably 2 legs with the back leg mostly hidden by the leg closest to the camera.
The back horse is in that part of their gait where all 4 feet are off the ground. From what little info I have regarding this it’s not uncommon for the back legs to be off the ground and in sync (thus vanishing) … making the image where all 4 legs are individually visible & off the ground sorta famous from way back at the beginning of photography days.
Momcat says
Love Edgar. And still keep chortling about Saiman and Tulip. I was betting on Bucky. I’m sure Loki never lived that one down. Although, with Loki, one never knew. And where, I wonder, did Saiman grow up as Loki’s grandchild? H’mmmm. Could have had a rough childhood. Although I believe he had a reasonable relationship with a frost giant cousin.
Maria OToole says
From what I recall of Norse mythology, no, Loki never did live that one down.
Kells says
I personally think Tulip is Bucky’s…Hugh mentions the scar on Bucky’s face, there is the illusion of a horn on Tulip’s head…
Stephanie says
I’m sorry, I’m much more confused about where Princess came from! The notation says Tides, but I don’t remember any chicken scene in Tides…. or hints of chickens…? Do we think it’s a (possibly deleted) scene from #3?
Tulip being of Bucky’s line totally makes sense to me, especially with how close Julie and Hugh are, just never thought to question Tulip’s lineage before. (Weird magical flesh-eating maybe-unicorn? Seems legit for KDWorld)
Moderator R says
It’s the chicken vendor scene in Magic Claims, not Tides 😊- when Kate heads over to the Order after Ned’s visit.
Stephanie says
Thank you, All Knowing Mod R, leader of the BDH!

I’ll be honest, I don’t recall a chicken in Magic Tides either, but definitely one in Magic Claims.

The story of Loki shifting to steal the giant’s stallion away and then becoming pregnant is the one Tulip and Bucky may be related because don’t they both manifest a unicorn horn?

Noting that Saiman firmly denies that he is Tulip’s mother, which gets expanded upon when Mod R reminds us that he cannot create functional ovaries when shapeshifting to a female form. Nothing in there to say he can’t be Tulip’s father… Just to add, that photo of the two horses is so perfect.
Also, just how many images do you guys have stocked for our Mr. Edgar Allen Prose, anyway? Having gone through some of the older blog posts recently, I saw at least five or six different poses, and I’m going to assume that you bought a whole collection of them at once. He’s just awesome, and I would LOVE for the model to find out he has a home space here with the Book Devouring Horde.
Narrmorr says
That’s what I’m actually curious about. Where do all the fantastic images of Edgar come from? If he’s a real man, he has such a wonderfully expressive face. What does the photographer say to him to get some of those expressions?
Now I vote we get to name sexy dude who pretends to write books on a bed with coffee.
Moderator R says
Edgar’s pictures come from stock image websites, like Adobe Stock, where images sometimes come in a series. The same artist or model will have several poses for the same idea. Ilona buys the right for use on the blog, and since Edgar is always so popular, the blog has collected quite a few of him 🙂.
Nancy says
A lovely out-loud laugh. Thank you. Actually, two loud laughs. Grendel made me laugh too.

Oh Saiman… really, it’s a fair question… LOL

So there is ONE limit on who Saiman will engage in s(m)exytimes with. Good to know.
I had no idea this theory existed but there’s always artificial insemination if he ever wants to test the limits of his genetic heritage.
Catlover says
Welcome to Edgar Prose, his name is as distinctive as his looks. I am not a fan of feathered birds being up close and personal with me even though I do eat a lot of eggs. They totally give me the heebie jeebies. I listened to both Wilmington stories from Hoopla while doing chores, very nicely done!
Ann Boggs says
Catlover,
While also not a fan of feathered creatures, it’s not that they give me the heebie Jeebies, it that they can put me in the hospital with anaphylactic shock. I don’t mind looking at pictures of them, (that one in the post is so pretty) but I don’t dare get close to them. Even pretty, fluffy ones that love to be cuddled.

I’ve been searching for years to know what kind of chick we raised.
She became the sweetheart… she was talkative, gentle and friendly. When she was still growing into the beautiful bird she became, we picked her up and set her on our shoulder as we carried the rest of the chicks into the house.
She never flew off our shoulders and would set there and talk to us.
We called her ‘Grey Lady’
Never before had we bestowed a name on a chicken because they were always so much alike that we couldn’t tell them apart.
She was different… her soft down was lavender and her outer feathers were dark lavender to grey.
I miss her… she was a true friend. You could go into the chicken house and walk right up to her and she would look up at you and cock her head and try to talk. We would pick her up gently and hold her and she barely ever struggled.
She lived to the ripe old age of 7 because we couldn’t bear to kill her. My mom sold her with the rest of the chickens because we were trying to get rid of a mite infestation.
Thank you for helping us finally figure out what she was… she was one-of-a-kind. 🙂

Wouldn’t it be funny if IRL Edgar is somehow amongst the BDH?

You have no idea how hard you made me laugh! Thank you for the wonderful Grendel snippet. For a second there I thought we were in big trouble with you over something until I realized it was Kate talking to Grendel. Why did anyone ever make deals with the Norse Gods? If it looked like they would actually have to honor a deal, then they would find some way to weasel out of it. Sabotaging the builder so you don’t have to pay him is just foul. (Of course, the builder’s pay request was just a tad unreasonable (Freyja, the sun, and the moon), but if the Gods didn’t want to pay, they shouldn’t have agreed.)

Jazzlet says
Laughing, but also remembering . . .
the breeder of our first German Shepherd Jazz (the others have been rescues) was a good friend although we didn’t live near each other, so of course we and Jazz went back to visit friends and mum, Jem. when Jazz was about six months old. Our friend was an early riser as she worked for a company based in Brussels, she didn’t expect us to get up at 6 am, but on our first visit opened our room door to let Jazz out so we could sleep on undisturbed by her desperation to get to see Jem. When we did get up our friend greeted us with an apology, Jazz had killed one of her chickens, she was so so so very sorry! We were a little bemused at how apologetic she was, but she said “I knew Jazz wasn’t used to chickens, I shouldn’t have let her near them!” which was true, but nevertheless rather refreshing. Jazz had been trying to say “hello” to the strange thing and it couldn’t cope with being picked up, even soft-mouthed. So I have some sympathy with Grendel, he isn’t used to chickens poor boy.
And yes my nym is from my first dog ;-D

I just woke up all the furry beasties reading that.
I name all my bicycles after mounts in literature (Shadowfax, Sliver Blaze, and Babe the Big Blue Ox). After my mom passed in 2020 I used some of my inheritance to buy a dream gravel bike. I named her Tulip because Tulip is awesome and my mom loved flowers.
Moderator R says
Awww, may she be a faithful steed like her namesake! 🙂
Susan says
Also Princess was my first dog’s name. At one point a peacock decided our backyard looked like a good new home and that teasing her was fun. She got slower and slower then once day we came home to feathers around the house and a dead peacock. I hated the bird so I wasn’t sad, but I was glad I wasn’t home when this happened.

I love that Edgar received his name in the very first comment on the “Name That Man” post — of all those spectacular name suggestions, I guess this was just meant to be!
Pat says
For the record – Saiman only said he wasn’t the mother of Tulip. Why didn’t he say that he wasn’t one the parents hmmm?
None says
There were no chickens in Mclaims so I assume this is an outtake. Nice one
Moderator R says
There were chickens in Magic Claims 🙂:
“ The chicken vendor, a dark-haired older white man, waved a huge chicken around asking for bids. She was gray and fluffy and seemed content to sit in his arms like a docile cat. “…lays five large brown eggs a week!”
That was a good-looking chicken with some serious egg-laying power. I should probably look into that.“
