Yay! Not sure what is more exciting, that we made a little bit of money or that we no longer have the debt associated with that mortgage. Either way, yay.
Gordon bestowed his crud upon me. I am high on Advil Cold and Sinus and working furiously on the final battle for Hugh’s book. Here is a small snippet.
Johanna touched her arm. Elara looked up. Serenity Helton was walking toward them, oblivious to people scurrying all around her, a blank look on her face. Elara’s heart dropped. She hurried forward and grabbed Serenity’s hands. “What is it?”
The seer stared at her unblinking. Her lips moved, but no sound came.
“They’re coming!” Johanna whipped around to the gates. “She’s saying ‘they’re coming’ over and over!”
The anxiety that clamped Elara over the last few days burst in a scalding rush.
“Hurry,” she whispered, sending her voice through the entire castle. “They’re coming. Hurry.”
The people scattered. In the village a bell rang. Hugh came running around the corner.
“They’re coming,” she told him, pointing at Serenity.
He glanced at the seer and spun off, barking orders. Elara climbed the steps to the outer and to the top of the flanking tower. From here, she could see the entire village. People ran, streaming to the castle.
Come on, she urged in her head. Come on.
Iron Dogs poured out of the gate, forming a protective line, shielding the evacuees. On top of the keep and on the towers, the ballistae and catapult teams cranked the massive siege weapons. She heard chanting, almost in unison, as the artillery teams primed the sorcerous bolts.
Shapeshifters burst out of the woods, running at top speed toward the castle – Hugh’s scouts coming in.
Seconds crept buy, echoing the beating of her heart. Come on.
Creatures streamed out of the woods, like an evil river, flowing in rivulets between the trunks to flood the grass.
Vampires. Hundreds and hundreds of vampires, smeared with sunblock in green, blue, and red.
The Iron Dogs unsheathed their weapons.

Whoa. Just. Whoa. (!!) Am so eagerly awaiting this book, Kate’s book, and, of course, more of the Hidden Legacy books. (I’m also with the people who desire Maud’s stories as a spin-off/add-on to Dina’s tales. 🙂
Congratulations on your house; commiserations on the crud in your household. Wishing you all speedy recoveries.
Hope the positives outweighed the negatives in your NYC trip, and that you and Gordon had a chance to enjoy the city itself.
Charley says
What she said!!!
Ms. Kim says

Ms. Kim says
Ditto to all Gail K said, but why “??” after “Feel better and battle on to victory”. Did you mean “! !” ?
Bee says
I suppose if a blue smeared vampire were about to kill me I would feel more threatened. I have this image of a bunch of sonic hedgehogs/hyenas racing through a meadow! Congrats on the house and may your OTC drugs provide great visions for upcoming pages. Looking forward to Friday…

UKmom says
Woohoo!! Congrats on selling the house.
I love all your books! Looking forward to Hugh’s story.
I just wanted to share that I had my first scary xp of administering cpr to my 8 mth old son recently. No clue how to go about it, but somehow managed to unblock his airways. He is ok now. Reading this snippet takes my mind off the nightmare.
Thank you for being awesome <3
Liv W says
How terrifying, but what a relief for the positive outcome! Something you and other family members may want to consider is to take a formal CPR class. Depending on where you live, the American Red Cross offers classes in adult as well as child/infant CPR (and other classes) for a fee (https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class); some communities also offer such courses by bringing in trained professionals (check the notice boards at, say, churches, grocery stores, clinics/hospitals, or any large gathering place).
The in-person classes (my recommendation) typically take 4 hours including hand-on practice, so that you know how to perform the techniques not only correctly but most effectively. There’s also an online course but you still have to take a hands-on test for certification. Once you are certified, you don’t have to take the training again for 2 years (optional).
Most health professionals will advise that anyone who has a child/teen 16 years or younger to take at least the child/infant CPR classes. It’s a skill you hope to never have to use but which you’ll be grateful for if ever needed, and many who take these courses say that it gives them a better confidence that they’ll know what to do if a related situation arises.
Liv W says
Cripes, just saw your moniker, so I assume you’re in the UK. Here’s a more relevant resource for you: https://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/how-to-save-a-life/how-to-do-cpr. This Webpage tells you exactly how to perform CPR and has a video, but it also provides links to resources to take classes. Good luck.
UKmom says
Thank you so much for your warm support Liv. I’m in Singapore. UKMom (UK mom – UK, is my son’s nickname)
Yes, I attended the Infant and children first aid course just this morning. It was supposed to be a full day session (9.30am to 6.30pm). I could not complete the course…I keep flashing back to the xp and my son’s blue tinged face. So I left midway. Perhaps I will complete the course, some day when it’s not so fresh on my mind. For now, I’m keeping myself awake at night to keep a close eye on him. With a good book of course 😉
Hope things are good for you at home.
Ms. Kim says
We are all wishing you the best of good luck for your son.
EarlineM says
The flashbacks take a while. Be good to yourself in the meantime. So glad he’s OK!
Regina says
I’m glad you wrre able to rescue your baby. Focusing on what happened After The Event Was Resolved (ie smiling/breathing baby) rather than the trauma has helped me push through some rough patches. God Bless!

Congrats on the sale of your house. That is one less worry for you. It seems to have sold rather quickly, considering the housing market. But am waiting with bright anticipation for Sweep of the Blade 😉

Simone says
Congrats on selling the house and making a profit 🙂 Plus not having the extra carrying costs must be a relief to the ol’ budget. My MIL passed away in January and there are carrying costs on her house until we get it sold (average sale in the 55+ community takes around 12 to 18 months).
Great snippet, as always the only complaint is that it is too short! Can’t wait until the book arrives.
Get better soon.
Sleepy says
Ahhhhh that was perfect! I love how I’m able to read a snippet and get completely immersed in the story immediately.
Congrats on selling the house btw 🙂

I keep imagining skittles with teeth…. I can’t seem to help myself
Jana says

Every time you specify that vampires have COLOURED sunscreen used on them I giggle.
I understand the logic – you also explained the logic – but it is such an incongruous image it never ceases to bring a smile 😀

Congrats on the house sale! One less worry off of your shoulders. Sorry about the crud. The four year old and I are battling something, but really just grateful its not the Measles (there is an outbreak here in Japan).
Its 330am here, I read the line “They’re coming” and giggled to myself because the movers are coming in about 4 to 5 hours am too anxious to sleep. I don’t feel so great as it is, and hubby has to go get some newcomers settled. So just me Vicks Dayquill and the 4 year old to watch and make sure everything gets done right. Hoping for the best once the sun rises.
LisaAlissa says
Hope your day with the movers went well, the Dayquill was sufficient and your 4-year old got whatever naps they needed.
If your time is finally your own, hope it includes time to relax with a good book!
Regina says
Have an uneventful move!
Kathryn says
The only thing that could be better would be a preorder button. Love each snippet of Hugh’s book. Can’t wait until the entire book is released. Thank you both for your great stories. My favorite? Which ever I am rereading at the time ?

Now I am excited about this book.
Still coming out the end of June, right?
Claudia says
Congrats!! Hope you feel better soon! And, OMG, that is quite the cliffhanger!
sarafina says
The house sale is good news, but just STOP!!!!!!!
Step away from the computer, go veg in front of the TV or just go to bed, whichever you prefer. Sleep, don’t knit. Take the rest of the day off. If you don’t feel better tomorrow, don’t get up.
You seem to be sick A LOT. Take some time and heal up then slow down. You set the schedule for Hugh and Maud, you just (I think) signed the contracts for Catalina’s books so they aren’t due next month (I hope) and Kate is done. Also, you have a grown up living in your house who seemed quite capable when I met him briefly at a signing.
When Seanan McGuire left her day job to write full-time she slept for most of 2 weeks straight. While working the day job, she said she was go-to-bed sick about twice a month. That’s unhealthy and crazy. And unnecessary, unless you like being sick.
I remember a year or so ago you shut down from exhaustion for a month or so. Unless you like that, perhaps you should slow down. You have too many dogs at the moment unless you are running a professional kennel or live on a 250 acre farm, but if Gordon is healthy he can deal with letting them in and out. I don’t know what Kid 2 is doing (and it’s none of my biz) but she could work the microwave or heat up soup.
I very rarely get sick, and when I do I’m furious and hold a truly annoying pity party for myself for a day or two. This is maybe 5 days in a year. Then I’m better, and I cannot imagine all the time you spend under the weather.
Of course, your life is not my business, but I cannot imagine being sick as often as you are. I hope you get and stay better.
Monica says
Are you really telling what you think should go on in their household, and how you think they should do it? I usually wouldn’t comment something like this but I really think you are coming off as rude.
Rebecca says
I agree with Monica. You have a vanishingly small glimpse into their lives through this blog. Presuming that being allowed this information also allows you to dictate to Authorlords how to live is incredibly rude.
Marianne says
I don’t know Sarafina, but I don’t think she is trying to be rude or dictate how they should run their household or lives. I think she is just concerned for Ilona and trying to get her to take care of herself. The difficult thing about the written word is it doesn’t allow for tone of voice, and depending on how you word things can be taken different ways. After reading Sarafina’s posts here for awhile, I just don’t see her as rude – more as forthright. I also like to give people the benefit of a doubt. ?
Sivi says
+1
Shannon from Texas says
I have to sorta agree with everyone. The way it was said is exactly the way I would speak to family or close friends, not to respected, friendly, sellers-of-products-I-adore.
But the spirit of the message is one I’ve been hoping some family member or close friend would deliver. Because the Internet is weird, and it *feels* like I&G *are* friends, I care, and plane flights always make nearly everyone sick.
It’s absolutely none of my business what the state of their health, or anything else they don’t choose to share with the whole world, is. But I *want* to ask, offer advice (opinions), and drop off the home-made mac’n’cheese w/ bacon and chicken that every one I know whines for when their sick.
Sorry for the tl&dr. We just care, and feel as if we’re close, because Internet. Best wishes.?
Ilona says
Sarafina is direct. I met her in person and she is a long time reader of the blog. But thank you for your concern.
Sarafina, no worries. I am on half days. Unfortunately the crud was unavoidable, as most of our plane was coughing on the way from New York. But not burning the candle at both ends. I am sacked out on the couch breeding frogs on my iPad. ?
Patricia Schlorke says
Good to know. ?
cheryl z says
This is why I hate to fly, one is stuck in a metal box with canned air and a gazillion germs-yech!!!! btw I don’t think one can have too many dogs, that is a personal and moral choice. I am adding a third young poodle to my family. Yikes two dogs with puppy brain and a peter pan older dog-God is good.
Oona says
+1 Cheryl. Every single time I travel for Xmas to visit my family, I either get sick a few days after arrival, or a few days after coming home. don’t get sick much, except when I get subjected to airplane germs. and I work with the public that sneezes, spits and coughs merrily on us. Not to mention, the parents that trot out their “too sick to go to school kids, but they’ll be fine *here*” germs on us… I have come to the conclusion that stress of travel at Xmas + plane germs = me getting a form of crud for 2 or more weeks coming or going. Sigh. I should not travel by plane. As for number of pets, I’m not able to address that. Because, LOL, I have 5 formerly feral cats….sooooo. Yah, not an issue I can speak to!
Deb says
You can breed frogs on your iPad?? Why do I not know this? Also this is actually making me want to read about Hugh who I have always thought of as an ass. 😀
sarafina says
Hugh IS an ass, but I think the book will be extraordinary.
CharisN says
That’s why I hate flying. Even with taking precautions like wiping everything down with lysol wipes, I get sick every darn time that I fly. Hope that you feel better. Congrats on the sale of the house – that went pretty fast.
sarafina says
YMMV, but when I’ve been in contact with a sick person and start to get a hint of runny nose, congestion or coughing I start taking OTC decongestants prophylactically. I have no scientific studies to back this up, but it seems like I can head it off if I start the meds early enough.
Monica says
My apologies to Sarafina, I took the directness wrong.
sarafina says
Thanks, but not necessary. Communication is very tricky.
Tiger Kite says
I too have the crud. I would feel bad for you if I weren’t so completely occupied with feeling bad for myself (whines and sheds a small tear).
Congrats on house sale and thanks for the snippet.
Christine says
Congratulations on selling your house , must be a load off your mind. Sorry to hear you are both now poorly ???hope you both feel better soon ?
Many thanks for the fab snippet ?
Ramona says
So sorry to hear that you’re feeling ill. Hope you recover quickly. Amazing, tho’, didn’t affect your writing skills. Great snippet. Thank you.
Marcia S says
Congratulations on the house selling. Try sambucal elderberry extract it will help boost immune system, love the snippet too.
Patricia Schlorke says
First off…congratulations on selling the house! 😀 That’s a lot of stress off your shoulders. Now, the people who bought the house can say, “I’m living in what use to be Ilona Andrews’ house!” Oh, if it’s one of the Horde who bought the house…gleeful chuckling would abound.
Second…the crud…yuck. Get well soon. My body is going haywire with all the crazy allergens in the air. Too bad Texas didn’t get cold and stay there to kill off all the stuff. Something is definitely going around. 🙁
Third…thank you for the snippet. Just when the reading was getting good…it stopped (aaaahhhhh!!!!).
Marianne says
I second everything Patricia said! Many congrats on the selling of the house!!! ???????
When you told us Gordon had the crud, I was afraid you might get it too. My hubby and I usually swap illnesses. I hope that it doesn’t get passed on to Kid 1 or 2, especially Kid 1 as she just started her new job.
Here’s hoping you and Gordon are feeling much better soon! Thank you for the snippet. I am getting more eager for the book with each snippet. Though, I would simply have bought it and been excited even if I had no idea what it was about. Everything that you have written that I have read has been great!
Take care and feel better!
Tiger Lily says
Snippet made my heart beat faster.
andre says
Hi ilona I may not be really good in inglesh so Im sorry but when you say “Gordon bestowed his crud upon me” that sounds kind of sexual. Sorry it may be so becouse I dont understand what means but even so… anyway thanks for the snipped.
Monina says
Andre that simply means that Ilona caught Gordon’s virus 🙂
andre says
Thanks and sorry…
andre says
Still sounds kind of sexual but ok I can roll with it
Ami says
It’s not sexual. It’s tongue in cheek dry sarcasm. She’s talking like he gave her a great honor like a medal or knighthood, but it’s the crud. The juxtaposition is supposed to be humorous not sexual. But if English is not a first language I can totally see how that would be confusing.
andre says
I understood that is not sexual maybe it is becouse english is not my first lenguage or maybe just couse Im weird and I get it is a joke but I think the way that was said saunds sexual but theres no problem with it they are adults and married… ps no Idea of what means “tongue and cheek” when related to sarcasm
Ilona says
Bestowed means given or rewarded with. Usually used as some sort of honor as in the queen bestowed knighthood. Crud is slang for annoying but relatively minor cold or virus.
andre says
Ilona no ofence was intended just a coment so sorry if I offend you. I knew what bestowad means but not crud só thanks for telling me. Maybe is my bad english or my weirdness but the way that was worded souded sexual but Im not moral police so that just make a little funny for me (yes Im that infantile). PS.ILONA REPLY ME YEYYYY!!!
Rohaise says
Congrats on the house, hope you feel better soon and thank you for the snippet.
Monina says
My heart!!!
Nicole says
Congrats on the house sale!
Please take timeto get better.
And anyone else notice: scouts = shapeshifters + Hugh …. say what! Can’t wait to see how that happened!
Tina in NJ says
At one point, I think Hugh lectured Kate that to use shapeshifters you had to start training them young. Curran and the Pack don’t have a monopoly on shapeshifters. Well, maybe in Atlanta, but don’t Elara et al live in Kentucky?
Joan says
One of the first ‘Hugh’ snippets had shapeshifters working with/for Hugh …
sarafina says
Hugh doesn’t have any problem using shapeshifters to achieve his ends. He doesn’t see them as people, but then I don’t think he sees a lot of people as people.
kommiesmom says
Roland trained Hugh to be his warlord. Think “general in charge of all the armies”. He was trained to be dispassionate about sending his soldiers (of any sort) into danger. I am told that’s a difficult thing for most officers. (Not being one, I can’t tell you for sure, but I would have trouble sending even acquaintances out to possibly die.)
I think Hugh treats his soldiers all the same – usually badly.
Mousewynne says
I’m not so sure about that – If you read the first 2 chapters it’s apparent that Hugh’s men like and believe in him. Otherwise they wouldn’t have gone looking for him. Given a choice soldiers won’t follow a leader who treats them as numbers. Hugh knows who they are and trains with them, everything he has them do he does as well. Having to send those you know into danger is hard for any commander but you do not get the best performance from those you command by treating them badly, in fact that’s a recipe for disaster.
Also, from some of the things Kate has said Voron who was Hugh’s original trainer didn’t have a problem with shape shifters. She mentions that they traveled with a female wererat who taught her how to extract silver from a were’s body. But Roland dislikes weres so it could be that Vorons original neutral view was buried by Rolands harsher views.
Sarah says
With that post title and photo, I thought the next line was going to be “… and bought a castle!”

Glad the burden of the mortgage is gone. Sorry that you got Gordon’s germs. Hope you can find some “me” time to drink tea and knit. Don’t get me wrong. I am salivating in anticipation of the Hugh book, and the last Kate book, and the HL novella, and your next blog entry. You are that good. Take care.

To join all the other well-wishers,,, get better soon, glad your house is sold, thank you for the snippet.

Chicken soup with lots of broth and lemon! And decaff green tea made with lots of ginger and lemon. (Unless you have a headache, then caffeine is good for that.) Liquids are the best medication for the crud. Well, except for antibiotics.
Pat Crouch says
Congratulations on the house and on the progress with Hugh.
Fan in California says
I know I I’ll repeat previously expressed sentiments but here goes anyway:
1. Congrats on selling the house. I would imagine knowing that is done is a huge relief.
2. Thanks for the awesome snippet!! So looking forward to Hugh’s book!!
And, most importantly:
3. Please take care of yourself. Flying is always difficult in terms of germ exposure. Hopefully you have some time to rest and, as I believe you wrote earlier, breed frogs (??).
Always love reading your blogs — you have a wonderful sense of humor I always enjoy!!

Congrats on the house sale!!! One less thing on your plate!
I’m so excited to read about the new characters! And Serenity Helton? What a name! So striking! Shiny!
Feel better soon! You got this! Especially with a snippet like that! I’m so anxious about this battle!

Glad you’re taking time on the couch. I hope you can kick the crud to the curb quickly.
Even knowing I’m in my house safe, just reading of the advancement in this snippet gives me the chills.
Can’t wait.
Kim says
This year’s crud has been especially miserable. I saw both my gp and my allergist, and said, yeah, I’m better, but holy cow – I’m sleeping 10-14 hours a day. And they both looked at me and said, that’s why you’re better. People who don’t (or can’t-I know I’m lucky) are taking 3 months to get over it.
So yeah, restwhen you can, and thanks for the snippet.
Amy Ann says
Big congrats on selling the house. One less thing to stress over.
And that was a mighty fine snippet. I am liking this book more and more. Can’t wait to learn more about Elara and see how the relationship between her and Hugh develops. This is going to be interesting.
BelleBok says
Yaay! For the house sale.
Thanks for the snippet -can’t wait for the book!
Well wishes for your health. Chicken soup is good and lots of fluids…but you probably already know this.

Congratulations on the house sale. It is a wonderful feeling to complete a process – like not having two mortgages.
May you and Gordon have a speedy recovery. Lots of prayers and healing lights your way.
As for the snippet … HOLY COW!!! And thank you!
Bill G says
Great news! And thanks for the snippet; it’s lovely to read, and to hear that the final fight is under construction.

That castle/sunset picture at the top is gorgeous. I wish the book could have color illustrations sprinkled in, like at the start of every chapter.
kommiesmom says
I’d pay extra for them. Probably only feasible in ebook, but i’d still pay extra…
Signe says
What a wonderful way to start the morning! Thank you so much!
Ariel Harris says
Congratulations!! I hope you feel some relief from the debt and extra hassle/worry particularly after you recover from this illness. Gordon – have pity on your wife and take good care of each other. All the best!
Colleen says
Hope you feel better soon.

Excellent news that you sold the house! Having been there/done that, it’s super stressful…and stress is a big contributor to illness. So please take care of yourself and Gordon. The other thing that I have experienced is the crash after the ‘running on adrenaline’ phase concludes. Now that you’ve sold your house, and finished a stressful trip, you were likely to crash even without the germs. I’m glad to hear that you’re resting. Please be kind to yourself.

Is it July yet? Is that book out? No, darn it! Oh, well, the wait is worth it.
Glad you are out from under the double mortgage. I am about to do that, and I’m not looking forward to it.
Sorry you are feeling cruddy and hope that both of you feel better soon.
Once more – Darn, that was a kick-ass scene. Can’t wait to read the book.
Thank you.
MagicTrix says
Double mortgages are not fun. So glad you were able to cut it down to one! But very sorry about the crud. My son is a commercial pilot and it’s worse than school!
Thank you for the snippet. Was it very difficult to change from “Hugh, the Villain (mostly)” to ” Hugh the Protagonist? ” I don’t mean just in writing, but in changing your mindset? The book did start out as a joke. But it has become a testament to the fact that if you write it, your fans will read it. I am eagerly anticipating publication.

Please take care of yourself and rest. I hope you feel better soon.

Shape shifters???? Hummm

Oh man. Take good care of you. This is why my mother wears a surgical mask on any flight she takes!
And thank you for the snippet!! R is gonna be severely ticked when the Golden Legion gets wiped. But for real first he wipes the Dogs. Now he’s going to lose the Legion. If I didn’t know better I’d say he wanted to die like Erra.
Mo says
I want to read the book right now! ???
Stacy says
Ahhhhhhh!!!!
I’m so excited!!!
Caro says
Thanks for the snippet despite the crud- hope you are getting better.
Congrats on the house and for Kid 1s job!
Kris Ten-Eyck says
Congrats on the house, the crud sucks, hope you get better soon. Since stuff is starting to bud and bloom in Michigan, I am sure a ton of stuff is in bloom in Texas, so I assume the pollen count isn’t helping. My husband is all over green gunpowder tea with local honey for that sort of stuff – so if you like teas you might give it a chance.

Echenacia and Feverfew might hep. Hope after High is done you can take a very much needed rest. From the sounds of it, your body is just plain worn out. And no wonder Wonder Woman, with all you have accomplished in the past months. Congrats on selling the house. Rest. Please. So you can enjoy the spoils of your “wars”. 🙂
Sharon Sayegh says
Awww, hope you and Gordon both feel better soon, congrats on selling the house (?), and SNIPPET – YAHOO!!

Congrats on selling the house I know the feeling of relief. We finally sold our last place in Alaska this year and weight off our shoulders. Sorry you got the crud. Friend of ours gave it to my husband last month and of course he gave it to me with the pollens we are both still fighting it. Snippet Wow
Susan McGillicuddy says
That was one of the best snippets I have ever read! Ever! I was not sold on the Hugh novel. Now I have a feeling it will be one of my favorites.
