Why does Christopher, former Golden Legatus, know the formula and how to produce panacea?
The People did a lot of experiments, including trying to hybridize vampires and shapeshifters. Unfortunately, Lyc-V eats vampirism for breakfast. Panacea suppresses Lyc-V immune response and there was a theory that if you fed a shapeshifter enough panacea, vampirism would take. It didn’t.
There was a whole subplot about it and then we cut it. Because that’s what we do. ::looking at 45,000 cuts file for Ruby Fever:: All the things you will never see.
We get questions about revision sometimes, and whether or not experience equals less revision, and so on. Writers never become prefect, in a sense that there is never a novel that was written and published without revisions.
Curious about “put down that cow” … is it physical strength, or is it magic/levitation?
Why do you ask spoilery things?
Whatever happened to Yu Fong? “His character totally reminds me of one those brooding, tragically traumatized yet beautiful and yet way too skinny K-drama guys you can’t help but wonder about and try to feed.”
Yu Fong is Chinese. 🙂 Also he is more like Eddie Gu. Six foot tall and not skinny
Okay so I couldn’t find a picture of him with bare arms and looking menacing, but feel free to Google. You need to add Chinese actor to the search string otherwise it pulls up Eddie Guerrero.
You will probably see him in the sequel to Blood Heir. Or maybe not. We haven’t decided yet.
Will Steve West read Hugh 2?
Every effort will be made to book Mr. West. He is absolutely perfect for Hugh. But we need to write that books first. We are hoping to be done with Ruby Fever by the end of this month. Then we will spend a month prewriting Innkeeper, so we can start it during the holiday season. Hugh 2 will likely be written parallel to the Innkeeper. We will keep you posted.

Can’t wait for Ruby Fever, hoping for answers to questions. In Chapter 12 of Sapphire Flames, Alessandro calls himself an idiot for something he sees between Linus and Catalina. Linus clearly does not want him to tell Catalina and when she asks he says never mind and oddly she does (out of character for her).
Which gets me thinking of the Linus is grandfather hypothesis, but that doesn’t make sense, maybe uncle, his twin is their grandfather!?! Or not….We know Arabella knows and I can’t see her keeping this information from her family as this would concern them all, especially Catalina and her relationship with Victoria.
I think Cornelius would make a better Warden to replace Linus. No question Catalina can do the job, but at an extremely high price to her soul. Cornelius was raised in that type of scenario, the same one that would have had Rogan kill Augustine, one of his few friends for Nevada’s sake. It would also be interesting to see Cornelius make his way from Pierce’s whipping boy to Warden, which holds more power than being the Prime of his family….will we get any novella on Cornelius and perhaps a case he solves? He is a great character….
Switching Universes here, when will the next Hugh book take place? Immediately after KD book ten (the showdown with Roland) or will it be around the time of Blood Heir?
If these were answered and I missed it, please enlighten me!
Ditto to the CJ post, you all are the best.

I didn’t mean this to be a reply to anyone, just meant it to be a post put out in the Ilona-Andrews Universe. I truly am a pothole on the technological highway….

I’m always asked to do a review of books I’ve read. I’ve decided to be a hard grader. My criteria for 5 stars are books I’d read more than once. Books I’ve enjoyed, but probably not reread get 4 stars.

Would love to know how you can write two different books at the same time. They are both set in different worlds and have different tones, but still, it seems it would be a real challenge and having two writers working together would make it even harder.

From Ilona, previously “Sometimes you have to switch gears creatively or you get really stuck.”. House Andrews usually work 4 days of the week on the main project and dedicate Fridays to Innkeeper 🙂
I hope this helped 🙂

Many thanks to you two for all that you do. I am always happy to read your stuff. Seriously, always.
Also, gently laughing at the irony that no author is “prefect.”
Relin says
How lovely! So neat to see what is happening! I hope it goes kindly and smoothly!
Maya says
Question: what is pre-writing? Is it like plot brainstorming or also planning scenes or something else entirely?
Moderator R says
It’s a little bit of buffer in case anything goes wrong one week *knock wood to banish bad luck*, House Andrews still wants to have something to post.
Here on IA’s manner of outlining and plotting https://ilona-andrews.com/2017/on-outlining/. The details get figured out as they go along 🙂

JF did an Outtakes book for Cat & Bones & I enjoyed it as much as the books.
So not to be a punk by asking, because I love and will buy everything you write and don’t want to pressure or nag, but just out of curiosity, after Hugh 2 will you next work on a Blood Heir sequel?
Wooing werewolf fans were wondering. . .

JUST yesterday I was fantasizing about Yu Fong, what-ifs, who and what kind of equally-beautiful badass his leading lady would be, because it would have to be someone epic in badassery. Yes been reading too much historical manhua and manhwa…
Tink says
So if you put stuff in the “cut files” folder and then decide to use it after all, do you swap it out of the cut files? Seems like it would be hard to keep the files organized, especially if you have so many from just one book. Do you use keywords or something so you can search in what you’ve written and rejected in case you want to put something back?

YU FONG *heavy breathing*!!! I would be so happy to hear what he has been up to! I have been reading a tonne of xianxia and danmei novels recently (I mean when reading something like Qiang Jin Jiu, which clocks in at 300 chapters, 1million+ words). They are larger novels in general.

Did the authors channel James Clavell? His books were so thick, they were doorstoppers. My favorite of James Clavell is still Shogun after all these years. Thank goodness for e-readers. 🙂

I might be misremembering a post, but wasn’t there a novel for Roman in the works/on the schedule/insert applicable phrasing here at one point?

It was a “never to be” holiday novella, which was replaced by Sweep with Me according to https://ilona-andrews.com/2020/holidays-and-unclean-critters/

Oooh innkeeper and Hugh 2 potentially on the slate for soon can’t wait.
I’ve just got into audiobooks and Audible generally has the audio version cheap if you have the kindle so I’ve just burned through innkeeper (needed to answer my own question on where the ripper of souls came from).
Im now on White Hot (unfortunately not on special offer like innkeeper but enjoying listening so much I don’t really mind). So after hidden legacy I might give the audio of Hugh 1 a go

Oh, thanks for the answer on the Panacea question. After reading Magic Triumphs, I always felt that Christopher was so driven and so ruthless when he was Legatus that, of course he would know the formula for panacea. And anything else that would give him an advantage over his enemies and competitors.
Looking forward to Innkeeper for Christmas! You’re so good to your readers.

Good to know RF is just about on its way. Glad to hear Innkeeper has not been forgotten. I just don’t ask when something will come out. I just wait.
Thank you for the pic of Eddie Gu. Nice

I have a KD question: how are you able to self publish books that feature characters and worlds that were originally published through contracted works? Do authors always retain the rights to their characters and the publisher has no say what you do with them after the contract is fulfilled?

“Double D was tried and plea bargained to a life in prison” https://ilona-andrews.com/2018/open-mike-faq/#comment-257647
“In Magic Breaks, after Hugh has magically teleported Ghastek and Kate to Mishmar, as they are hanging in the watery oubliette, Ghastek tells Kate what happened to Nataraja: Apparently he started mumbling to himself, killed his giant snake Wiggles and left its pieces strewn about for a journeyman to find, and eventually investigators from the Golden Legion came and took him away. ????” Ilona confirmed it all here https://ilona-andrews.com/2018/open-mike-faq/#comment-258153

Thanks for the updates!
I’m also curious to know what “prewriting” a book like Innkeeper entails for House Andrews. Is it similar to what you outlined for Erin’s NaNoWriMo?
Moderator R says
Hey Jennifer,
It means a little bit of buffer in case anything goes wrong one week, House Andrews still wants to have something to post. So they like to have a part of the novel pre-written.
Here on IA’s manner of outlining and plotting https://ilona-andrews.com/2017/on-outlining/. The details get figured out as they go along ????

Mary Cruickshank Peed says
Also very happy to hear new Innkeeper and Hugh’s book are coming 🙂
Nl says
I started to wonder …
What was the impetus for Innkeeper? Meaning, did you guys look at each other one day and go “hey hon, the current book is getting to be work, lets take a break and clear our minds by writing a new story on off days ” or ….?
Also or maybe its the same answer, where did you get the idea to serialize it on the website? I don’t know what it is, I have seen other authors try the same idea and its just not as entertaining. Personally, I went from Innkeeper (hey, free fantasy!) to following your blog to find out when the next innkeeper was coming to being a fully invested fan and blog reader. Was that the plan?
Nl says
It goes without saying, but should be said, that if you guys weren’t such amazing writers, I for one would have wandered off … Really looking forward to all your planned books!

I semi-remember a comment you made about Iron and Magic 2 about it being too dark to release in 2020. I “assumed”, (sorry) that meant you had written it but were not releasing it. So have you written any of it or are you writing it from scratch?
Moderator R says
Hey Debra,
Iron Covenant 2 has not already been written. Part of the narrative was known, which is why it was difficult to write or release in full pandemic.
The writing will only commence as per the update above.

So of course I had to begin again at KD 1 (twist my rubber arm!). Anyway, I’m just wondering: is Bucky a relative of Tulip? Or am I drawing connections between glimmering coats that do not exist?
Also, equine genealogies aside, I’d just like to let you know that all of your books have really helped me get through not only this pandemic, but also a very trying year personally. Thanks so much! ❤

Speaking of Hugh 2 spoilers, does anyone have a theory on Elara and the chicken? See Magic Triumphs.

How did you come up with the idea for blood armor and weapons? Is that based in a cultural legend or is that from your imagination?

Yah !!
Happy ???? ????
Innkeeper ????
I’m loving it ????????????

I believe I know the cow answer but why spoil it for everyone? Also another Hugh book, Blood HEIR and an Inn Keeper Book? You spoil us with your literary munificence. Even if they happen over several years thank you in advance.

Thank you for answering the question about panacea and Christopher! I would love to see the sub-plot you cut, but you are already so generous. ❤️

A little late to this party, but I’m jumping up and down at the idea of Hugh2 inching even the slightest bit closer! And if you get on a roll, please feel free to keep right on going with Hugh3 (and Hugh4 and so on)! 🙂 So excited by this news.

Thank you, Ilona Andrews for the post.
We appreciate all your hard work. Okay i do. The bovine, canine and feline just like the fact that human stops for awhile to read so they get TLC while said activity is ongoing. ????. Yes we are all spoiled.
Enjoy fall weather. Here we are currying daily as summer fur coats are being “shedded” for winter coats.
Thanks for picture.

I just reread all the Innkeeper books; now in the midst of Hidden Legacy . Comfort reading when stressed.

Thank you very much for the updates. Really looking forward those books. I adore the inkeeper’series. And I’m so happy to hear about Hugh’s book. I grew very fond of Stoyan and Lamar, can’t wait to read about them again.

Why do we, your faithful readers, ask “spoilery things” like “Is ‘put down that cow’ a strength thing or a magic thing?”?
Because inquiring minds want to know. Still a funny scene…and it shows how far some people have progressed/healed in the interim.????

Love your books, world building & your characters! A wonderful way to escape on a lazy day! Keep to the incredible work! Cheers to many more years of reading pleasure!

Just finished my reread of kd and on blood heir so this was a fun treat to see. Always enjoy this world and all you do. Dark is good, it’s part of tall dark and handsome. Lol.
Not at all the same thing but when Im crafting, I have multiple scrapbooks or cards going at once so if I get stuck I can see if creative juices unblock with a change. Mind you it’s not different worlds, just a way to express something else. Is that similar to why multiple books at a time?
Take care!

Thank you for this post about many things KD. And for including the snippet about Innkeeper. My heart did cartwheels! I love all of your works and worlds, but Innkeeper is especially resonant. This feels like an early Christmas present!

Thank you for your churn! You two are really literary beasts when it comes to how much content you produce, and since I love it, thank you.

Blood Heir was amazing. Thank you so much.

I love innkeeper! I love hidden legacy! I love the blood heir series too. Not picky at all. Thanks for continuing to be productive, I think we are all weary of that (being productive) , so appreciate your efforts even more.

Slipping in the new innkeeper line at the end of this post. Did I miss it being announced elsewhere? Either way, thrilled.

Innkeeper and Hugh?! Rejoice! I just re-listened(bc reading at work is frowned upon) kate/hugh/julie novels and am feeling very nostalgic for their continuation. I appreciate your authorship’s continuation of writing.
