I’m lost, which series is Augustine from?/ I’ve read everything I don’t remember an Augustine? /Is Augustine someone from This Kingdom?
Augustine is the character from the Hidden Legacy series. We first meet him in Burn For Me, which is the first book.
A section of the wall slid aside. The receptionist looked at me. I stepped through the opening into a vast office. We must’ve been in a corner of the fin, because the wall to the left and straight ahead consisted of blue glass. A white, ultramodern desk grew seamlessly out of the floor. Behind the desk sat a man in a suit. His head was lowered as he read something on a small tablet, and all I could see was a thick head of dark blond hair styled into a short and no doubt expensive haircut.
I approached and stood by a white chair in front of the desk. Good suit, in that color between grey and true black people sometimes call gunmetal.
The man looked up at me. Sometimes people with talent in illusion minimized their physical flaws with their magic. Judging by his face, Augustine Montgomery was a Prime. His features were perfect, in the way Greek statues were perfect, the lines of his face masculine and crisp but never brutish. Clean-shaven, with a strong nose and a firm mouth, he had the type of beauty that made you stare. His skin nearly glowed, and his green eyes stabbed at you with sharp intelligence from behind nearly invisible eyeglasses. He probably had to have protective detail when he left the building to fend off all the sculptors who wanted to immortalize him in marble.
The glasses were a masterful touch. Without them, he’d be a god on a cloud, but the hair-thin frames let him keep one foot on the ground with us mere mortals.
“Mr. Montgomery,” I said. “My name is Nevada Baylor. You wanted to see me?”
Montgomery valiantly ignored the purple tint of bruises on my face.
“Sit down, please.”
He pointed to the chair. I sat.
“I have an assignment for you.”
Andrews, Ilona. Burn for Me: A Hidden Legacy Novel (pp. 29-30). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition.
Is the baby tiger ok?
Who do you take us for? Yes, the baby tiger is okay. Nothing bad happens to Kitty.
Does this mean the series is now back, and we’ll have Arabella’s trilogy?
No. You get Augustine’s novella with bonus Arabella scenes and her shorts from the blog. No promises for anything else.
Will Beast Business be available from your direct store? Is it an exclusive? Will it be on Amazon, B&N etc?
Beast Business will be available from all the usual retailers and our store.
Which formats will Beast Business have? When will they be available?
We are starting with the ebook, print paperback, and audio to follow. Print will be shortly after or on the release date of the ebook, while the audio will be a few months out. We are looking for our perfect Augustine audio reader. As always, the price of the POD print edition will be horrendous, but we have to make at least $1 from each sale, or we will be taking a loss.
We will announce the exact dates as they come in.
Will the audiobook be traditional narration or dramatized? Dual POV?
The novella is dual POV but we have made no decisions in regard to audio yet. It is a shorter project and not all audio readers work on shorter projects, but we are in process of reviewing the auditions.
Is it really coming out this January? 2 weeks from now January?! Can it be true?
We are aiming for the tail end of January. It’s the matter of getting the edits done. If we miss this deadline, we will have to push it to summer, because we do not want it to intrude on This Kingdom publishing window. Nobody wants to wait till summer, so January it is.
When does BB happen in the timeline?
A couple of months after Baylors buy their house.
Is this the same artist as the Hidden Legacy special edition?
Yes! Helena is amazing.
Is this Augustine’s real face or Augustine as he illusions himself to look?
If only there was a novella that might explore that question and give us some answers.
Detail Police: Why is Diana not blonde? Why does the cub not have 4 nostrils and a tentacle collar and 4 eyes and is not blue? Are Augustine and Diana the same age, because she is older than Cornelius?
It is so nice to see you guys still being that passionate about the series. It warms my evil heart. Let’s take these one at a time. Diana is not blonde because she changed her hair, which you can find in the first snippet of this novella.
Zeus does not have four eyes.
A creature waited next to him, indigo blue, with a spray of ghostly black and paler blue rosettes and spots across its fur. At least two and a half feet tall at the shoulder, six feet long, with a thick neck crowned with a fringe of tendrils, a short wide muzzle with dagger teeth, and wide paws as big as my hand. It reminded me of a tiger.
Andrews, Ilona. Wildfire: A Hidden Legacy Novel (p. 90). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition.
and
There was something feline about it, something reminiscent of the broad powerful tiger, but its nose was a complicated thing of four nostrils, and the fringe of tentacles that ringed its neck moved on its own. The beast looked at me with an understanding, as if it was a lot smarter than any Earth animal. It was just odd. Really odd and unsettling.
Andrews, Ilona. Wildfire: A Hidden Legacy Novel (pp. 95-96). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition.
It’s hard to draw that kind of nose on a tiger, especially when it’s that small, and Kitty is very young, so the tentacles are still forming, which is explained in the novella. The tiger is most definitely blue. Some of you think she is white, but she is not.

This is a white dress/blue dress situation.
I will also pause here to say that right now every book cover – not an exaggeration – is accused of “being AI.” We made a conscious decision to keep Kitty as tiger-like as we could and gave that description to Helena, because if Kitty was drawn with four nostrils, some people would assume it was an AI-generated image gone wrong. The potential fallout to the art and to the book was not worth it.
Augustine and Diana are roughly the same age. At the beginning of the series, Augustine is in his very early thirties, while Cornelius is 28.
Also, this cover is gorgeous, but it cannot possibly match the mental image of every Hidden Legacy reader because there are tens of thousands of you. While Helena is definitely an art Prime, there is no magic like that.
When will GA rerecord the books with the new Augustine?
They will not be rerecording them. So many people worked on them and the original actor gave a wonderful performance. He is very talented and his performance was inspired. It’s more that Catalina’s trilogy will get a different Augustine.
I thought the novella was a serial?
No. We only posted a couple of snippets. Serials require so much time, and we are putting in over 2,000 words on This Kingdom #2 every day.
When is the Spanish edition coming?
Mod R tells me June 9th, but please check with Hidra directly.
We are seeing two audiobooks of Inheritance on sale.
Correct. We are doublechecking this, but this is probably caused by our distributor stepping in. Initially, the Inheritance audio was exclusive to Audible/Amazon but now, after 90 days passed, our distributor will pushing it to other retailers. You are seeing that preorder.
My Turn
Now I have a question for you. We had a bunch of how-to writing articles on the blog, which we mostly archived. I’m not great at teaching. First, I’m not an expert. I know how to write commercial fiction, but I have none of the education that would train me for explaining how to do it. Second, fiction is also strange. What works for one person doesn’t work for another. You can really damage people with feedback if they are not ready for it, and I feel like I do more harm than good.
However, Mod R mentioned that people are still looking for the articles. I can bundle them together for you into an ebook reference, if there is enough interest, but I would have to charge a couple of bucks for it to recoup the time investment and editing costs.
I think the topics were something like how to fold time, how to write a chase scene, difference between show don’t tell and passive voice, basic story structure, etc. We did a class one time on the worldbuilding based on economy, and I think I still have the write up for that somewhere. For those who are still asking about the alphahole article, I took it down ages ago and I don’t have a copy of it.
I don’t think there will be enough interest in any of this, but if you want it, we will consider putting it together. If you want it, let us know in the comments and tell us which topics you want to be covered.

Ohhh, no comments yet?
First certified 🙂
Woooohooot! I didn’t expect it, I was just wanting to read any news for the Horde, since yesterday’s reveal for Agustine’s book kept me hooked (I vant more…said in vampire voice). First time ever being certified! And the news do not disappoint either. Thanks for the explanations (especially about the baby tiger, there was some dark foreshadowing there. i do hope Zeus and his partner also are unharmed, really. I’m scared for baby tiger’s mom. I guess Zeus is Ok, because we’d probably have known if something had happened to Zeus in the last book of the series. Ok, I’ll stop, I’m rambling.)
I guess that for those who want to immerse themselves in the writing business, advice is always precious. Especially when it comes from a successful and seasoned couple of writers.
Ooohhh ModR you so cute!
I know I am, but what are you? 😀
Pretty kitty!
I’d definitely pay for those insights about writing, those posts helped me be a more informed reader and understand more of my reactions to some works I read as well eg understanding why or why not I felt more engaged in a story.
I’d be interested in all of them you listed:
how to fold time, how to write a chase scene, difference between show don’t tell and passive voice, basic story structure. *especially the passive vs active and basic story structure.

I’d pay for that reference book!
SAME! I am just finishing my degree in Creative Writing and still don’t feel like I know enough to write my own book!
+1, if nothing else House Andrew’s posts about writing and publishing provide so much perspective
I’d pay for that!
+1 for the writing book, always interesting to read a published authors perspective

Maybe Mod R could make you a poll? Polls are fun! 😄

Same same – I would pay to read the ebook!

I have a niece and a daughter who are interested in writing fiction. I would definitely buy at least a couple of copies as presents, and maybe one to keep around the house in case another worthy recipient presents themself. Or maybe just to reread.
Where fiction is concerned, I’m a reader, not a writer. But I have enjoyed every article you’ve written on the subject. It’s true that teaching is a separate skillset, but you do an excellent job of explaining your subjects to anyone who is wired to read or to process information verbally. And realistically, how many outside those groups are interested in learning to write fiction? Don’t sell yourself short.
Take my money was literally looking I. That section the other day!! Please bundle all the wisdom!!!

I like Augustine very much, so even a short novella ist good News! and more GA, Yay!
Short is another bad Word, like w*it and p*tience 😀
Shall we replace the o with a * as per usual, or shall we replace the r, and minimize confusion? (Whether I read shirt or sh*t, I won’t be seeing short!!)
I cannot possibly be the first?
So looking forward to Augustine’s book. You spoil us, and I am thankful 😀
I really appreciate all the explanations but man, you guys are saints.
I want a full Kitty portrait at some point. Im so excited!
Oooh very excited for tge end of Jan!!
I would absolutely be willing to pay for the writer’s reference book!
I am UNREASONABLY excited to devour Beast Business. Hidden Legacy is one of my ‘comfort’ series. Thank you for this gift
Daryn, I’m the same way, Hidden Legacy is my comfort series. The news that we will be getting Augustine’s book by the end of this month literally made my day. Work has been rough and any bit of sunshine is extremely welcome.
On the writing advice book, I love reading those articles. While I don’t write myself, those posts are a really interesting how-to / behind the scenes read. Add me to the group that will probably purchase it if it is published.
SO EXCITED to read (and reread repeatedly) Beast Business!
Yessssss
I would pay up to $5 for an ebook collection of your “on writing” posts.
I’m slow to notice things are out though, so I might not be a day 1 buyer.
I may have just done a complete Hidden Legacy re-read in preparation for the novella, (listening to the Wildfire GA for the first time!). I am that excited. The whole series makes me smile.
I just realized that if Cornelius was 28 at the start of the series, he married and had Matilda really young. His love story still makes me sad sometimes, but I’m happy father and daughter found the Baylors.
Matilda is 4 or 5 at the start of the series. 23 isn’t an awful marriage or parent age in a world where families are expected to secure the line. Even if Cornelius wasn’t the eldest, they do state a high mortality rate in House children.
Also, I don’t know if they ever state Nari’s age. She may have been a bit older than Cornelius. She was a practicing lawyer at the time of her death and that degree takes a minimum of 7 years in the US.
When Nevada went to Cornelius’ house in his first appearance, one of his animals brought a bottle of milk up to Matilda when she woke up from a nap so younger than 4 I think.
Without having the book in front of me, wasn’t it a sippy-cup that Cornelius washed and gave to the racoon for Matilda?
I would insta-buy an instructional ebook! Also, I feel very blessed to have a novella to look forward to. I am going to be on my best behaviour and wait patiently. (Repeating the mantra until it becomes true)
Yes, please! I’d love to have the material on writing and would absolutely buy it. I know this is your process and way(s) of understanding/approaching things, but it really is helpful. Or, at least I find it so and from the comments it looks like I’m not alone.
Also, kind of love that there’s no set date for Augustine. He will just magically appear! The beacons of the BDH will be lit! Buying will occur! Work will be ignored! Woo Hoo!
I have the soundtrack of the beacons being lit in “Return of the King” in my head now. 😂😂😂
lol, yes!!!
I’d be interested in the reference book. I’m interested in all those subjects.
I will happily pay money for a book of your writing posts!
I’ve attended writing conferences and classes taught by other authors. I have read a lot of instruction.
Your advice is friendly and practical, and I think half the value is riding along with you as you explain the thought process that’s carrying multiple commercial successes.
You’re also pleasant to spend time with! Writing instruction is like having tea with the teacher, and there are some people out there serving up …well, not the nice useful stuff you do.
This!! 👆🏻 And very well said!!
I would definitely by a writing craft ebook! instabuy. all of the topics mentioned sound very helpful and interesting!
We (the Horde) are a persistent group. 😂 **Softly thinks: Hmmm…how can we get Arabella’s story in the far, far future?**
Awww…Kitty! Mod R’s new avatar looks like she’s in solidarity with Kitty. 😁🐅
Thank you for answering all the questions.
I absolutely love the hidden legacy series and look forward to the novella. very excited! I know u said no to Arabella’s book for now and that’s ok. but I do want to say her book would very much be appreciated and adored if yall decided to eventually do one. even if it’s not a 3 parter like her sisters. thank u for all the hard work u put into all your projects!!
BDH is so spicy 😂
I’m not a writer but I found your articles on this very interesting when seeing them on the blog — kinda like reading Sidney Lumet’s book on making movies helped me better appreciate what goes into things. So I’d pay a couple bucks to supports its release as a ebook!
This is exciting, Beast Business, counting the days
BDH. Fam. I’m still not recovered from Augustine.
Mod R was so right about Pancakes.
Slight eye twitch, I had forgotten the blue/gold debacle. We could go for a good, frivolous thing that divides the internet instead of big, heavy things dividing the internet.
And awww bebe tiny tentacles.
Please put the writing articles together. I found them fascinating. And as an aspiring writer and a daughter that wants to write… they would be a very good thing to acquire.
I LOVE the how-to writing articles. It’s one of my favorite things here.
Fwiw I’m in the camp that prefers a single narrator rather than dual. I don’t care for the constant changes of actors. It’s jarring to me and takes away from the experience rather than enhancing it.
yes. ebook reference book on how you do fiction is oh-how-cool and i will give you monies for it. thank you
Me too!
Thank you for explaining why it’s a baby tiger rather than a tiger-like creature, since that was something I was confused about when you released the cover art. While I wish it wasn’t a necessity—I understand why. On a happier note, I am so excited about having a surprise release so soon! I really like Augustine and was always happy to see him show up in the series.
I’d definitely pay more than a couple bucks for that reference book! There’s been quite a few times when I’ve wanted to reread one or the other of those writing advice articles and it would be amazing to have access to them again in any form!
I feel like I should thank you for you patience with the BDH. We’re a lot.
On the other hand, why do you keep taking stuff down – lol – we’re the BDHoard in all ways. We want to hoard every bit of knowledge, snippets, and insights you share. Please stop decluttering – we want it all🤪
Have a cup of tea and a slice of cake and ignore us for awhile.
You’re thee chalant-iest!
The publishing industry doesn’t stay the same 🙂 What works at one point, won’t work 5 years down the line.
Sometimes it’s just general spring cleaning. Not to put words in Ilona’s mouth, and obviously I don’t think myself anywhere near the same level of HA, d’oh!, but I kind of get it now that I have a few posts out there too. Looking back I cringe so hard and I’m so self-conscious of some of the things I said, I just want the earth to open. I want them to be gone haha.
Welcome to the human condition. That’s the unfortunate side effect of being older but wiser. I envy friends who are through this stage and into old enough to not give a rat’s rear end anymore. Not sure I’ll ever get there.
I know this isn’t a related question, but I have been wondering if we are ever going to see anything more about Dina DeMille and Company, I really miss them and hope their adventures haven’t ended yet..
A sequel to the Innkeeper Chronicles is planned, but not officially in the schedule yet. More details here https://ilona-andrews.com/blog/:
“Without promising anything, we are hoping to invite you to a wedding next year. It will have fangs, weapons, and former mothers-in-law who are in serious need of comeuppance”
Alrighty, I have now officially acquired an allergy to W*it and P*tience.
I’m people. I’m looking for articles.
Your post about the 30K slump–that referenced Burn for Me’s bistro scene–was behind the scenes magic. I think about it constantly. (in a good way, not a creativity stifling way)
I would be thrilled to pay for an e-book reference.
Over the moon for an Augustine novella, and Im sure Im not the only one who would come out of their skin with delight if a Bernard and/or Leon novella were to grace our ears…*cough cough*
Hahahaha
“If only there was a novella that might explore that question and give us some answers”
This reminds me of my son-in-law who always answers a (I don’t know question) by holding up his phone and saying “Gee, if there were only way to find out”
hahahahaha
If his phone will write that novella, I need to know make and model.
This is my favorite series, I’m so excited.
I’ve also realized just how bad a reader I am: “thick head of dark blond hair styled into a short and no doubt expensive haircut.”
I didn’t think he had blond hair. I think I made up my own details in my head and am terrible at reading comprehension.
I’m Sorry, I still don’t understand if Beast Business will also be available in Audio form and when. Thanks,
It will be available in traditional narrator audio format, a few months after the release of the ebook and print formats.
Thanks, so much!
Also, yay novella! Thank you very very much! 💜
Seeing the posts in a single reference file would be great! I’m particularly interested in the world building.
Hi, thank you for answering so many fan questions. and !
I would very much like to buy an e-book of your collected ” how-to-write ” posts.
I had no issue with the GA actor, but I also re-listen so many times it becomes normal to anticipate the voice changes. I am so beyond happy about the new novella….fingers crossed all goes well for Jan release. Unfortunately no interest in a “how to” book at this time but I am sure there will be enough interest to warrant a small collection, so many people on the blog are writers or budding writers, you do generously help so many.
Thank you
I would buy the ref book, and I am not even writing 😀
YES! Those writing articles were awesome, and I found them very useful when considering my own writing. I would happily pay for an ebook– bonus points for including our favorite squinty scribe man somewhere in the book as well. I loved it every time he showed up on the blog.
I’m definitely interested in ALL of the writing topics listed above, any and ALL you would be interested to bundle together. Thank you so much ☺️
I would pay for any writing advice from you in book form!
Well, my own adjustment to the kitty not looking like I imagined Zeus, was remembering that many baby animals do not look like their eventual adult form.
So stripes that would hide a baby lying motionless in the tall grass might gradually morph into rosettes that disguise an adult moving stealthily through dappled shade, and the second set of nostrils only open as physical activity increases. Like wisdom teeth not erupting until a person’s teen years.
Biology is a wonderful thing.
Agreed
Thank you for your patience with your BDH, lol. We are soooo Chalant lol
Re: writing book. I’ll buy it.
Also, while the image of Augustine does fit my imagined image of him, I did have an insane scenario in my head when I first saw it.
“What? You are actually putting me on a cover? Wait, wait. Let me put on my cover model face for you.”
Thank you. I would definitely buy the how-to-write ebook.
I was wondering why baby Zeus does not have fringes, thanks for the explanation. Super excited, something to look forward to in January, the blaahest month of the year.
Mod R, that tiger icon rocks
happy weekend BDH
Is there a way to mail mod R?
modr@ilona-andrews.com
Might be a delay responding as I’m in edit deadline 🙂
I would absolutely buy the reference book on writing that you mentioned.
I share your concerns about giving feedback (you are thinking like a teacher, which from me is high praise) because even for those of us who have had education in being a teacher, that is always tricky. You have to tell the student that they made a mistake, but in a way that helps them to fix the mistake, not crush their hopes of ever being successful. And it is easier in my subject matter (math) because it is obvious when something is objectively “wrong” whereas in writing there can be an argument on that.
I previously read all the articles you had on the subject of writing and I thought your examples were excellent and your instructions clear. It would be a great resource to have.
I love your writing pieces, and I would definitely buy an ebook of them. Memorable ones: how to do scene transitions/time jumps, how you design covers, and all the great business of writing pieces where you’ve opened up on how being a hybrid author works. These have all been very helpful for me 🙂
I would definitely buy the how-to-book. I’m not a writer but I love reading. Your writing articles give me a look behind the curtain and make me appreciate stories even more.
Is the sweet kitten going to be made into a stuffed animal and sold on your store site?
By now you have guessed I like cats.
I am interested in everything you mentioned. Passive vs active voice is harder than I thought. Folding time transitions aren’t easy so please any and all help
Oh… I’d be interested to read any writing topic you chose to talk about! Literally each one you mentioned. I have a formal writing degree, and honestly, all advice on writing ✍️ s just that person’s perspective on what works for them. I love your work enough that I’d be ravenous to hear about what works for you!
I would absolutely buy an ebook of IA writing about writing. I’ve loved all the previous articles (the one explaining episodic series and everything related to it has been very influential – and I have a degree in English!) and would drool if there were a bonus thrown in, whatever it may be.
I laugh evilly and disturb my daughter while she is working on a hugely detailed craft project while reading this post.
So: yes to Augustine and Diana novella! And will pay.
Also: yes to KINGDOM #2! And will pay.
And just so you know, also: yes to writing workshop notebook publication–Yes, I will also pay for it.
This is the reason I am only semi retired. I need to pay for my reading and crafts addictions! Plus I now have time to go to all the cool new restaurants, Hot Pot stops and coffee shops with my friends: The Ladies Who Lunch.
I have nothing useful to contribute to this. I’m just here to chant. Pancakes, Pancakes, Pancakes!
I really want this cover as a print.
The reality of my writing again, is slim to none. But, I would buy your writing book.
I love all your writing/publishing posts!
+1 for refrence book!
I have a question – so in re-reading Catalina’s books, we learn that those who care for her slowly develop immunity to her magic, her pediatrician is immune, her siblings. She says that Cornelius and Runa developed an immunity, gradually – does that mean that Rogan has too? As her brother-in law we know he cares for her as an extension of his caring for Nevada, but in Diamond fire Catalina herself says she isnt sure if he genuinely likes them or just treats them well because they’re important to Nevada.
Augustine likely isnt immune to her but would Rogan be?
Rogan is immune to Catalina’s power 🙂
Family members already love her with real love, for who she is, and Connor is family. Induced Siren love cannot override that.
It’s not about the amount of time per se- only in as much as we need time to get to know and love people sometimes. For the pediatrician, it’s the fact that she believes with all her being in her duty and oath to care in the best way for her patients. There are things stronger than magic 🙂 and we see that several times in the series.
Thankyou, I appreciate the clarity – I think I just got a little caught up in Catalina’s uncertainty in Diamond fire.
So much love for this series and everything that goes into it!! ❤️
Yes, I love seeing how the sausage is made. Happy to contribute for a POD
I would buy the blog reference book. I routinely remember something and try to find it, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. A book would be excellent!
Yes! A writing ebook from my favorite authors? All. The. Yes.
Any budding spec fiction author would jump on that book, hug it to their chest and run… after slapping down a payment of course. Please publish this one. I have peeps to gift it to.
I would buy that book on writing SO FAST. please.
Question, you mention that at the beginning of the Hidden legacy series that Augustine is in his early thirties. But I always was of the belief that Connor(Mad) Rogan and Augustine were the same age (they were in college together). And that Connor was mid twenties in the first of the Hidden Legacy series. So please confirm again their age. Thank you
Nevada is in her mid-twenties in Burn for Me 🙂 Connor is around 4-5 years older.
Yes pleaseandthankyou on the writing book! I enjoyed your perspective on those and would like to have them in one place.
I’d want to get the book on writing.
Hmm… Would we like to
tips on ‘how to be an awesome author’ from a pair of awesome authors?
Yes. Yes please. Yes to it all.
I would buy the reference book. As a former editor and proud member of the BDH, I love the insight.
+1 for the writing reference if it’s worth your time
I would probably purchase the reference book. I am not a long time blog reader, so I don’t know what you’ve written on the subject in the past.
Thank you for offering up the idea of a reference book. My preference would be to read about very specific techniques that you wanted to expand on. If you have Cookwise, my image of the reference ebook would be similar in tone, though obviously not as ambitious.
I’m interested in the types of technical details you mentioned (e.g., how you go about folding time).
Also, I’m curious to hear about how you keep track of canon because you do so many extra bits of writing (wait, what color were the eyes of that side character we did six years ago, because I just had a great idea about what he did two years later).
I would buy the writing reference book. Your insight has been helpful. Looking forward to the novella.
I’d recommend personalizing it a tad heavily before publishing as an “tips and tricks for writing Urban Fantasy in the style of Ilona Andrews” or “Ilona Andrews writing tips and tricks” or something of that nature. Only reason I recommend doing that is because it informs the reader that it won’t be “This is how to write.” All the master classes by writers are set up similarly. Some get a little egocentric, but I’ve never known you guys to be like that over the past fifteen years I’ve been a member of the horde.
Yes! We want it all! I’d love the ebook! I will be p*tient… I am very CHALANT about the new novella!!
I am so very excited for Augustine’s novella! I would also like to extend my “yes, please and I will pay” vote to a bundled electronic references of “how-to” writing topics from HA. I am proud to be a member of the BDH who will buy anything that HA publishes.
I can’t overstate this- I will purchase ANYTHING published by House Andrews. You could staple your grocery lists together and I’d throw money at it.
I’m not a writer, but would love to buy an ebook bundling your how-to writing articles! I always find your behind-the-scenes posts interesting.
Seriously you’re always so patient with us lol
To answer your question, I would be interested in buying something like that. I am not going to limit you on the topics though. Sorry, not sorry.
I would be interested in the ebook writing “IA Class”
No magic to please everyone … Zooterkins, I am shocked! Or maybe not … I’m sure I will love it, even if something varies from my mental image.
First, I’d happily pay for a writing ebook from IA! You two have a crisp writing style that still feels like real life, which is a really hard balance to strike.
And SQEEEEEEE!!!! I can hardly w*it for BB and anything more in the HL world, my number one comfort read series. Augustine, Arabella, Leon….. and who knows where else the Author Lords might segue to?
Also trying hard to practice p*tience for More Maud!
(More Maud! More MAUD! MORE MAUD!!!)
My Ch*lantness is completely blown anticipating This Kingdom and I truly appreciate these snippets and novellas to keep us going. I don’t know how you do it all, so please don’t burn yourselves out!!!
Honestly, I learned more from your teaching about writing than I did in 2 semesters of great writing at Texas A&M. I would be happy to pay you for a copy.
I would be interested in buying a collection of your “how to” articles. any of the subjects you listed or have available. I find it interesting to see some of the “behind the scenes” of writing and my husband is also working on becoming a writer/improving his writing.
I’d be interested in an ebook gathering the writing articles. And chalantly await Arabella’s trilogy. And every other book for every series in progress. And don’t acknowledge that any series isn’t in progress.
Not a writer or even really considering writing anything, but a book featuring behind the scenes on how the nuts and bolts work would be fascinating. I really enjoyed Stephen King’s book On Writing and would love to see a similar book from House Andrews and would totally buy it.
Me ten!
I have the Stephen King “On Writing” book… I also have several other authors who have written similar books on writing, science, math (blegh!), cooking, art, etc.
It’s like a window into their writing or profession/world and the books often include snippets about our favorite stories, etc., which explain otherwise “hidden” meanings and so much more!
I love reading and watching videos of “Behind the Scenes” about people, etc. It enhances my understanding.
I would definitely pay for an ebook:
“House Andrews Writes — Posts from our IA blog”
or something best titled by HA.
Cool beans!
❤️❤️❤️❤️
We BDH are so spoiled. I just hope Life doesn’t cause you to overwork
Thank you for the recent book recommendations
Is the beautiful cardigan meeting expectations?
I would definitely buy the reference book. It is always worth it to read any form of “how to do the thing” from people you think are doing “the thing” really really well.
Yay Kitty!
I would love to have a book with your writing advice, any and all topics, general story structure, world-building etc but also more specific ones like how do you start/finish chapters?
+1 would love that writing ref book – I loved sending those posts to aspiring writers in my life !
I would absolutely be interested in the ebook edition of Ilona Andrews’ Thoughts on Writing: YMMV and further offer my preferred range of $7-$12 for such a text. Less would be nice, but the Authors Have Bills, so $7 is my lowest comfortable offer.
Ooooh, great title!
Yes all the attentions!
A-hem, Yes please would you collect the writing posts into a handy dandy ebook format. I find them very helpful.
Thank you Benevolent Author Overlords!
I will also buy a writing book! Those are excellent and very helpful.
Thank you for the FAQs! I am SO excited we get a new novella! I know you guys are locked in to this huge deal with Tor, but I really appreciate you guys taking extra time to give us little goodies here and there, like with Sanctuary last year. I hope you guys are getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated!
I’d buy the how-to book, just to enjoy the writing in it.
I’d be interested in the folding time and writing chase scenes (and any other action) articles.
I am confused. I see the first commenter being excited about that. Why is that? I came late to the blog and have certainly missed things!
The first thing is just a game that started during one of the serials. People would hop on the blog, not see any comments and ask if they were first, and Mod-R started certifying who was actually first. It’s just quirky BDH fun!
I’d also like the how to book!
So where does ‘chalant’ come into play? Because I get that its an unpaired word based on ‘nonchalant’, so the opposite of calm and casual but where did that start? I only just started tuning into the blog and Im so very behind on inside jokes.
It’s a joke from a previous post here 🙂 https://ilona-andrews.com/blog/555-rumors/
Thank you Kaitrin. I probably came too late for it. I know I missed some of the serials. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Have a great weekend!
To clarify, the “First” thing is not an Ilona Andrews blog thing 🙂
It’s an internet cliché, a comment written by forum users to mark their initial discovery of a previously uncommented-on post.
It has existed as a practice since the 1990s.
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/first
I loved The Inheritance . Will there be another book ? The second time I reread it her finding a lees was great and him telling her about the off planet market place “I don’t want to mangle the spelling of Bah market” see what I mean. It’s hard waiting for your books but since I have all of them I have a lot to reread.
Thanks for putting up with all our questions! And answering many of them!
I’d buy a book with how to write articles from the blog. I always found the articles very interesting.
I originally thought it was a white tiger, but when I went back to look at it I could see it was light blue, on my screen (which is dark view). Might be darker blue on my computer, I’ll check that out.
“If only there was a novella… Thanks for the laugh!
W*iting for the end of the month!
We are interested in the reference book!
I’m a reader, not a writer but your process interests me. Plus I purchase everything from Ilona Andrews, usually in multiple formats. And sometimes multiple copies, because gifts!
I would pay for all the articles, I’m really interested in writing and I don’t know what to do first! 😀
I have loved everything that IA has published and enjoy whatever comes, whenever it comes – thank you so much!
I had no issues with the GA actor and am looking forward to Wildfire coming out in a few days so plenty to tide me over until the novella comes out!
Actually you are a fantastic teacher! if I had any desire to write, I would gain a great deal from your experience and examples
. as it is i just enjoy reading them, and would even buy it if you put them together and published them :-
As I sit, wa-ting for the next lovely addictive piece of joy from IA I have found a a small bit of comfort.
I discovered that there a bits of IA joy that I had not known about! Our beloved Authors have participated in Anthologies! With other authors!
So far I have found HEX APPEAL, NIGHT SHIFT, and ANGELS OF DARKNESS. I wish that I had a more complete list, and rejoiced that my holiday gifts included gift cards.
If you go to the menu on this site it gives you all that information. All goodies right here, just browse through the menu. There’s also some free fiction.
As I dug further I learned that (so far) the stories I found were also published individually as novellas. (Nasty Words, NASTIER WORDS).
Should anyone find or know of some that were not also released as novellas please share?
Hi Robin,
There is a handy Complete Book List on the Release Schedule page that contains everything ever published (even just on the blog). It’s organised by series and chronological order.
Here is the direct link https://ilona-andrews.com/release-schedule/#booklist
Every single title on there is clickable and will take you to a page where it is described and retailer options are given 🙂
Also, the listing on this site does not include older positions. For example, I found Magic Tests in “An Apple For The Creature”. I did buy an older print anthology because; as it was not available as an ebook, there was no way for me to check the table of contents for possible duplications.
Magic Tests is on the list 🙂 . It is available in all formats, including ebook, in the Small Magics anthology – as explained and included on the list https://ilona-andrews.com/katie-daniels-books/#small
Anthologies, where still commercially available, are included in the retail options if you click on the title you’re interested in and go to its page.
I am so excited for Beast Business!!
I am a reader not a writer, but I would love to read about writing from the HA perspective. So I would purchase that ebook. And if you flipped it over like a manga book and made the flip side a cookbook w all the blog related recipes that would totally rock! 😊😂
Want two copies – one for each child! And then one for me. Please.
Yes to the reference book, please.
So excited for Beast Business. Thank you for fitting it in
Any chance Arabella will get a book of her own in 2027? Or will there be a novella on where the girls are now? revisiting Nevada and Rogan?
I would definitely pay money for a writing article compendium of everything done so far!
Yes please. I would love to have all your writing posts (and anything more you write) about writing in an ebook. Or even paper book, now that I actually have room for physical books. While I do know how to write, have taken a gazillion writing classes, etc., my fiction skills and knowledge are flabby. I’ve written technical docs for decades and let my fiction just kind of drift away. But I have been feeling writerly as of late. Also, your writing is enjoyable period. Yes, I would buy and read this.
An ebook with your advice would be good.
I love this series and anything new in it is always devoured!
Please publish the writing book. I am interested in any and all topics you want to include.
yes, What I remember of the articles got me thinking, so I would buy an ebook or an audio
Thank you for the explanations! Looking forward to the novella 😄
You once did a blog post on what makes Romance, Romance (the whole “if you leave out the love story, do you have any book left” angle). I’ve actually used your explanation in real life situations to explain stuff, so thank you for that, and if that one were included it’d basically make it worth the price of admission to me.
Not sure if this is the “alphahole” one, but you also did one on the structure of Romance novels and how generally elements are ordered from The Meet Cute through The Misunderstanding, The Grovel and finally The HEA/HFN (might even be the same blog post I mentioned above – sure, I remember it as two separate ones, but my memory is a famously unreliable narrator). Anyway, same holds: would definitely be worth the price of admission to me.
Thank you for all that you do!
How-to writing articles, for a couple of bucks (more or less) I would buy it just because you wrote it. I don’t ever see myself writing anything of worth, but I have always had a fascination with the idea of writing. It doesn’t help that I am grammatically deficient.
Side note: “but it cannot possibly match the mental image of every Hidden Legacy reader”, encapsulates why I have never been able to enjoy audio books. It can be done perfectly, but the voices and pronunciations will never match what I have built up in my mind from reading the book.
Would love (and will pay for) an ebook of writing tips from you! ✍️
Would buy the writing lesson e-book for my daughter. She’s found all the posts she’s seen very helpful.
thank you for clarifying the age question, I think as I get older (mid 40s)everyone just looks a lot younger then I’m expecting 😂
I want it! I definitely want the ebook on writing.
“We made a conscious decision to keep Kitty as tiger-like as we could and gave that description to Helena, because if Kitty was drawn with four nostrils, some people would assume it was an AI-generated image gone wrong. The potential fallout to the art and to the book was not worth it.”
Reason 483910 I hate generative AI
yes please to the how to write book bundle.
I want that writing article ebook please!
Oh!!! I’d love the ebook about writing! even if I’m not a real writer, those glance in the writing world made me a better reader. So please do!
I’m gonna love the 2026 in the reading ( and listening mode) it’s so full og IA stuff!!!
In a world of growing AI, I prefer the IA, always.
^pure gold^
Interested into the reference book too,…
… slightly confused about the pre-order for the audio version of The Inheritance, as I bought (not pre-ordered) that one at 31 October 2025, but maybe I misunderstood something in this post here?
The Inheritance audio was first released in October when you bought it – as an Audible exclusive, for reasons explained here https://ilona-andrews.com/blog/the-audiobook-of-the-inheritance-is-live-on-audible/. If you already have it, you don’t need to do anything 🙂
After the 3 months of exclusivity clause ran out, which just happened in January, the distributor made the audiobook available to all major audio retailers.
From my understanding, the automatic distribution system works by sending the title to bundles of platforms at once , without a real option to selectively include or exclude individual storefronts. This made it appear as a duplicate listing on the one platform it was already on.
When are the next Innkeeper Chronicles books/novellas/installments coming our way?
Keep an eye on the Release Schedule page for official announcements 🙂
Just here to + 1 for the writing book!
Yes please to the writing ebook! I think your style is very clear that you are passing on your experience and it may not work for everyone. I got a lot out of it and would love to pay a bit to have it all in one spot.
Yes, please! I’d buy that ebook.
I’d definitely pay for that reference e-book
It would be wonderful to have all your tips in one place.
Maybe it’s possible to add a short recap of the alphahole article?
You guys write the best “actually dangerous, yes also to the protagonist” love interests, and I’d love a glimpse behind the screen to see how the magic is made
I’m really looking forward to the new book and plan to get the print edition from amazon Germany. However, while previous books sold like this were all fine quality, The Inheritance wasn’t. The printing was slightly blurry, which made it harder for me to read. (I’ve got eye issues.) The same happened with an ACE title from the US, which clearly wasn’t imported as usual, but printed on demand here in below average quality. Is there anything you can do to make sure that Beast Business has the print quality of your previous pod titles? I don’t know if it’s possible and will buy it either way, but thought I’d mention it. You might not even be aware that there has been a quality issue with pod here lately.
Hi Stephanie,
Thank you so much for letting us know and I’m sorry you had quality issues with your copy. I will flag this with the agency and see if anything can be done. The printing of the PODs is done through the Ingram or Amazon KDP systems and they will usually replace it for you through the retailer Customer Services if you send proof of bad issue 🙂
In respect to the Ace Book – I will have to check, but it seems like a local publisher had the foreign rights. They have absolute control over quality, translation, printing, dates etc, and should be the ones to raise this with.
Hi,
Thank you very much for looking into the pod thing. I hope that will help. With more than one pod book being like that it looks like a general issue where asking for a replacement wouldn’t help. I also didn’t want to cause Ilona Andrews expenses – I’ve been told that replacements come out of the author’s budget.
And just to clarify: The ACE book wasn’t one of yours but the latest Patricia Briggs, then I got her first book in the series for a friend and that was the same. It was the exact same poor quality like The Inheritance, and it was a bit of a shock that I didn’t get a proper import but what was clearly a local pod copy. I ended up buying an original American paperback on amazon US instead. I only mentioned it here since this looks like a general decrease in print on demand quality here, but not for everyone, I think. Other pod books I recently got (Caimh McDonnell’s novels) are still fine, so I did wonder if you maybe had different options. That’s why I mentioned it here.
Again, thank you. I appreciate that you’re looking into this and replied to me.
If you put together a reference book, I’d pay for it. As an aspiring writer, I’m always looking to learn. Plus, you two are among my favorite writers. I’d probably buy it for that alone.
Yes, I would be very interested in that writing book. I like the ideas you already brought up. Other topics of interest would be pacing/tempo. How to get necessary info across without bogging down the story.
Also, where do you start your story? Is it planned in advance, or do you find yourself moving the start based on how the story progresses?
And just for curiosity, do you feel it’s more important to get words in on a daily basis or get edit as you go?
Either with or without these topics, I would find your thoughts on the writing process an interesting read.
Thanks.
“ I don’t think there will be enough interest in any of this”. I’m sorry, have you met us? I’d buy it!
😂
I don’t write fiction (and probably wouldn’t buy the e-book) , but I’ve always found the writing posts really interesting. I also think it helped me better understand the skill and decisions involved in other commercial writing; we learned a lot about themes and characterisation in English Lit at school, a lot less about plot and genre expectations.
I came into the Ilonadrew verse with Kate, but Hidden Legacy became my absolute favorite and I’m so thrilled to see that this series chives on.
If you collated the writing ebook I’d buy it, specifically chase scenes and show/don’t tell aspects.
Cheers!
I would also buy the reference ebook.
I would happily shell out more than a buck or two for the convenience of having all of the writing blog posts in one place instead of in multiple open tabs in my browser. Put me down for a yes please vote.
Definitely would love the reference articles!
YES PLEASE! I will pay good money for your how-to insights. I will inhale everything you’re willing to share! I am a former technology analyst who’s written over 50 research notes, and the editor of a best-selling CIO Desk Reference (800 pages oufff). Have been reading science-fiction/fantasy since 8 years old, have always wanted to write but just can’t get started. All I’ve been able to do is this; “ Ilona flicked her hair. Its tendrils of fire snaked out to the attacking demons, and speared them to the walls of the castle. “Mwahaha, take that evil demons” she spit at them. And watched with glee as that dissolved them, and the goo ran into the drain”. So I am looking for inspiration from the BEST – YOU!
yay! and Im interested in the ebook about writing (especially if you have any advice on making the middle of the book interesting because mine is like The Two Towers “theyre walking, theyre walking, EXCITING, THEYRE RUNNING, and blah”)
I’d be interested in the article how-to ebook.
I would buy the How To!
I would be interested in the writing articles bundled together.
Same as everyone above. I would definitely buy the ebook. After 57 years I finally started writing down all the scenes and snippets of stories that have been floating around in my head. Hopefully someday they will coalesce into a decent book. House Andrews are my favorite authors and any and all advice is welcome. Can’t wait to read the Augustine novella and This Kingdom!
Yes, please, take my money for all the teaching things. Thank you!
I have saved many of your writing articles over the years but would love to see them in an ebook. It would also be personally enjoyable if you had small anecdotes, like a paragraph introduction to each topic, about how you came about your insights. I love the success stories of authors figuring it out over their careers, it can be quite inspiring, even if no author does it exactly the same way. 🙂
Here, here!
[clapping chalantly]
Cheers!
Your writing about writing? I‘d snap that up in a heartbeat!
I‘m not a writer. But I love the peeks behind the curtain and you are very, very good at letting us in on your thought process and craft. Metacognition for the win.
Yes, I would love to have a collection of your how-to articles about writing (and happy to pay a few bucks for the privilege). I still refer to my copy about folding time when I struggle with this issue. You write clear explanations that are helpful while I learn to stretch my skills. Many times, the articles provoke an “Oh! I get it now.” reaction.
I can add begging if it would help 🙂
So excited and thankful for Augustine’s book to escape the current times. Thank you!!!!! I’m praying that despite being a novella, his and Diana’s story finishes in one book because I am still waiting to find out what happens to Arabella, Julie, Roman, Hugh, and now Maggie. I can’t handle adding another one to the list! But I’m still so excited 🙂
Who is the BDH world asked “I’m lost, which series is Augustine from?/ I’ve read everything I don’t remember an Augustine? /Is Augustine someone from This Kingdom?” ???????
The BDH welcomes all, including newcommers and people who may have skipped a series 🙂
I would buy the how to book.
I definitely appreciate your writing and publishing blogs. I would buy the ebook if you put it out
Thank you for Al the answers to questions. And yes I would love the how-to book and I would love all the topics that you could cover!
Oops *all the answers!
So I’m the only one who wasn’t wondering why the tiger didn’t look like Zeus, but instead jumped immediately to “ooh, look…baby Derpy tiger!” Curse you K-Pop Demon Hunters for overwriting my brain!
And as stated before…mmmmm paaaancakes!
Nope, you’re not alone, totally went there earlier but can’t say I mind 😂
I would love to see the collected writing articles in an ebook.
Yes, please, the ‘how to write’ collection!
Yes, I would pay for the reference book.
I like your how to write posts and would buy the book. You had a blog post on passive voice that I shared with my kids’ Middle School teachers, and I think they saved it and are still using it now. I’m very excited for All The Books.
I’d love to have all your instructional blogs in one place.
Also I have a question that I don’t know if it was addressed in your blog. I was curious what all parts of the author life the magnificent Mod R handles for you? Also, what parts you like to control and what parts you tolerate because you love writing?
Thanks, you’re the best!
Hello Ilona, I’d pay for a reference book. All the topics you mentioned sound good. I remember reading some of these posts and thought they were clear and insightful, with a friendly and helpful tone.
You and Gordon have been super generous with your time and thoughts, and I think it’s more than fair for us of the horde to support your efforts.
(As long as it doesn’t get in the way of your upcoming stories, of course!)
Re- write the phone book, attach your name to it, and I’ll be pre-ordering that sucker just because you wrote it. Much love.
I’d pay for and enjoy the how to write reference posts in one book.
I am interested in everything you two have written about writing in whatever format you put it in. So please let us know how you proceed with this and when it is available and where to get it.
Thanks and hugs,
Patti
I would love to have the collection of posts on ebook form. Happy to pay you for your time.
Ilona, you are a better teacher than you think. When I write, I still hear your voice in my head, “Why did he do that?” “What does he stand to lose?” “What will he gain?” You taught me most of what I know about character motivation, even if you didn’t set out to do so. That short time we spent as critique partners has influenced me all of these years. Thank you.
Baby Kitty, baby Kitty, baby Kitty!!!!! Helena!!! Kudos!!! Baby Kitty!! I am swooning here with Kitty covetousness!!! That little Kitty needs to be cuddled!!!
HA absolutely rules.
Oh wow, please make a book put of your real life wisdom pertaining to writing. I would pay for a textbook-like offering from you. Great qna.
Yes I’d be interested in a how-to ebook! All the examples you gave sound very helpful, I want it all!
Yes, I would purchase your guides.
When I’m reading other works, I sometimes find myself thinking that the author should consult them! The show instead of tell is a skill that often needs development.
You have set the quality bar high. Thank you for sharing the methods so generously.
*raises hand* one more for the “I would be interested in this ebook” group! All of the topics but basic story structure in particular. I honestly find the basics most elusive (or maybe it’s more that they have the biggest impact if one is not solid on them?) I’m not a writer but I do training and I find storytelling skills go a long, long way towards making training less painful for all involved 😅
(Also, just, yay more IA things to read, fiction or advice or otherwise it’s bound to be time well and happily spent!)
Have loved the articles about writing and would indeed purchase the ebook, in fact, several copies to give to two family members who are interested in writing.
This Kingdom #2? What about Iron and Magic#2 (soft, pitiful whimpering noises here)…. Will it be published before I die (my birthday, I’m old and feeling my mortality).
I ordered this from my local bookstore. Very exciting!!!! I appreciate all the work you do, juggling all the series and trying to write what you want also. Does Tor have access to all your work so can re-publicize for new readers or are Kate and the Baylors still with Ace and Avon?
The previous series don’t change publisher, no 🙂
Thanks!
I would buy the reference e-book. Like some others on here, I have a creative writing masters. I think you guys give yourselves too little credit as educators. I’ve read and enjoyed the teaching articles. They are helpful! I request anything about world-building. Also, your thoughts on humor and voice. Thank you!
Publish it. I’ll pay for a copy.
+ Whatever number it’s up to.
I would be interested in a compilation of your “how to” posts, and I don’t mind paying for it.
I would be interested in the reference book.
Yes, to the writing reference book.
As each writer has their own voice, method of writing/organizing, etc., each contribution to the pool of knowledge is valuable. You never know when a specific work or phrase will strike someone’s inspiration. The writer (aspiring or not) might be struggling to start, or stuck in the middle, or flailing to tie up the final scenes. Your words could be the exact spark.
Lovely blue kittie!
Please may we have all the writing articles? Everything, like the one helping the NaNoWriMo person think of 5 different plots for their overall book? Thank you!!
Yes, a new book of whatever length! Happy to get it, Augustine and Diana should be interesting along with Arabella. Here in SD we are having weird weather, I left work yesterday and just walking 200 yards to my car I almost got blown over twice. Winds gusting between 50 and 70 mph, scary stuff! I just got the roof mended from the last blow but happily no shingles in the yard. Hope all is well in your world.
yes please, to the writing reference materials in an eBook format 🙂
Hello,
Is it too late to wish you a Happy New Year?
I would love an ebook of all the writing articles you had on your site, please.
The time folding one would be amazing to read again. I think you had one on dialogue and one on sentence structure that showed examples of ‘tightening up’ prose to give it more impact.
However, any wise words would be appreciated. Thanks for thinking of it. I wouldn’t have been forward enough to ask.
I have a question that isn’t related. Apologies!
I just got done listening to GA’s Night Huntress #7 and Jeaniene Frost had a voice appearance (not sure if that’s what it’s called) in it. Will Ilona, Gordon, or Mod R be doing any voices in any of the books? It would be so fun to hear that! 🤞🏻😄
Thank you! 🤗
I shall not rest if GA do Sanctuary until Ilona records Evdokia! She *MUST*!
+1000000000000000000000000000! All the plus ones!
Seconded! It is so moved. 😄
I would be willing to pay a few dollars for an ebook of how-to blog posts (or most any other themed collection of your blog posts).
(Don’t have thoughts on specific topics. Other than whatever you think would be most interesting and/or useful for the BDH.)
Yaaaaas I will buy the book on writing! I have found the online articles to be helpful, thought provoking and instructive. Thank you! 😃
Ilona, I just want to say thank for all the care and feeding you do for the BDH. You are by far and away the best at engaging your readers and making us feel seen, heard and loved. Thank you. Many blessings to you, Gordon and all the family (fuzzy or not) for 2026 and beyond. Also thank you Mod R. You rock! ❤️
I’m definitely interested in the reference book! My best friend is in the middle of ariting his first novel, and I’m one of his editors. The articles you posted about writing have been a big help!
Oh golly, nobody asked about Hugh. I really got into the story and should have saved them to read again. Kingdom is pre ordered but my hungry eyes crave Hugh, Kate’s Wilmington years, more of Inheritance. Kinda wanting cake, cookies, donuts, ice cream with peanuts on top or any kind of cream pie with whip cream on top. But the desire for two crust pie with ice cream would work too. I am flexible.
Yes, I really want Hugh 2. But it’s on the list, just not first. Apparently.
Yes please and thank you (the folder of articles on how to write and become famous)
Yes, please, for the writing wisdom packaged in a book!!
Can’t wait for Augustine and Diana!
Yes, I want the how-to-write book. My daughter is a writer and she has found your advice helpful.
Yes. I am always interested in how writers work. I would definitely purchase!
As for the “how to write” idea, I think it’s fabulous. My genre is academic lol, as I teach beginning writers in college most often. Believe me, I’ve learned a heck of a lot teaching it and you never know when your method clicks for someone. Those who are serious about the writing will search for the info that clicks for them. Creatively I write poetry most often and if that isn’t a bear when it comes to critique from folks. I’m published in an online magazine here in my home town, but not everything I write shines. Poetry is a very tough nut to crack, but hopefully before I exchange planetary existence for one out in the ether I’ll get at least one book out. Maybe. If I don’t chicken out. lol
You are both so super amazing. I love y’all both so much! You have helped me with my sanity so often. I just jump into your worlds. They are another reality for me to live in for awhile.
Looong time BDH reader, blog consumer and lurker of the comments section… first time poster.
I love your work and would devour a craft book of collected writing advice, no matter the specific topics covered (e.g., business advice, tone and character voice, staying motivated to write, plot mapping, fight and chase scenes, managing a worldbuilding project sustainably, etc.). You guys are incredibly inspiring authors and each release is a highlight for me.
Seriously, I’ll take anything I can get. Your creativity, your consistency, the sheer polish of your craft and the way you centre the heart and humanity of each piece front and centre are what I aspire to in my own writing.
House IA publishes a craft book? Sold! And I’d pay full-price for it 🙂
The moment you hit send and “see” that typo lol 😆
+1 for the writing book!!
Kitty is adorable. 😀
Yesterday evening while out for a walk with hot hubby, we ran into one of our neighbors, and neighbor’s friend. We start chatting. Neighbor’s friend and I realize we both read books. NF and I then discover we both read urban fantasy. THEN we realize we are both part of the BDH. We proceeded to completely ignore hot hubby and neighbor in favor of talking the sun down. I learned NF has yet to read the Edge series but is in love with Hidden Legacy and Innkeeper and Ryder. We were out there for an hour in the dark, talking plot and quotes and favorite authors, and it was just what I needed to destress from the day. Thank you both so much for telling stories that give us new friends!
+1; your voice (as it were) adds so much color to the subject. Worldbuilding/economics very much yes!
Sure, I would pay a couple of bucks for the writing ebook.
Honestly I buy anything you write but I have not been disappointed yet. I like the parts I have read on the blog.
Creating a compelling villain is a topic I like. You do such a nice job of making them interesting and a good match for the protagonist.
I am interested in all those writing topics, and would buy an ebook with the related posts/class notes in it.
Also the list of publishing people you may or may not interact with directly, what their job is and isn’t.
I’d also love a reference/writing advice book. I have zero ambitions of becoming a published writer, but I do like to write as a hobby, and also DM a Pathfinder campaign (think DnD). Even if I have no intentions of earning any money from it, I still want my stories to be the best they can be, or in the case of the pathfinder campaign, my players to have fun and feel immersed. The self-doubt is real.
A book to just remind me that, hey, this is hard for everyone, here are some tips that may possibly, but maybe not help, would be awesome.
Why is it Augustine Montgomery in the excerpt? I could not get past that…
Because Beast Business is the new Augustine Montgomery novella 🙂
I would happily buy the writing ebook.
A little late to add my “please compile an ebook reference” comment! Your way of writing is unique which tells me how you think is equally different. The insights are worth the investment.
Yes please, I’d buy that reference book!
Your blog is where I first learned of alphaholes. Loved that article. it crystalized a lot I had thought; reading bad romance books with male protagonists that were assholes pretending to be alphaholes. I do not enjoy books where women fall in love with guys that mistreat them.
Grumpy guys with hearts of gold – 👍.
Hot assholes – 👎
Seconded.
Just finishing Inheritance. Every book you have ever written is on my favorites list. I’ve listened to them all several times. Of course Kate is my favorite, but inheritance may just very well surpass it. I can’t wait for the next one not sure if it’s only gonna be a two book or more but you never ever disappoint the two of you. Thank you so much for a wonderful reading.
Umm just a thought the hoard wants all the books. Sort of goes with the devouring name….
and love the kitten!
Stephen King wrote a book about writing called “On Writing” its amazing and I recommend it when ever someone says they are interested in writing but would like a reference book.
I highly suspect I would love reading your reference articles in a book format just as much as King’s. Please publish the series as a book, I’ll happily pay.
Interested in the chase scene, fight / battle scenes, the worldbuilding class would be awesome too. Also, not sure if you ever had one but if you had an article on foreshadowing without being too blatant I’d love to read it.
Thanks for everything you all do, its appreciated!
I’m sooo excited about Augustine’s novella, and I’d be happy to pay for the writing book. As a cheap New Englander, it’s very interesting – I never mind giving IA money – it makes me happy that you have it.
Now… pushing it…. any chance the writing book is also an audiobook READ BY AUTHOR?!!! Hearing and reading the snark would both be excellent.
Ditto!
[old, old, old school reference…]
Cheers!
I would definitely buy your book on writing!
I would love to have a copy of your how to articles! I always forward them to my son as he is an aspiring author and graphic artist.
Augustin is similar to what i pictured but better looking in Helena’s image. So happy to finally get Augustine’s and Diana’s story! and kitties!!! I’d be interested in purchasing the writer’s tips book. Especially directly from your store.
I would buy it 🙂
Yes, I would be interested in your how-to writing articles, as your writing style is delightful. Reading and reading your books continues to be one of my favorite pastimes.
Re: reference book
I will buy whatever you publish. My granddaughter is a newbie writer and it will be a wonderful birthday gift for her.
I am re-reading the Hidden Legacy and when I encountered Zeus, the image that flashed in my mind was the blue tiger in Kpop Demon Hunters (aka Derpy). Derby doesn’t have a frill of tentacles nor four nostrils, but could we imagine Zeus as a visual cousin?
Looking forward to Augustine’s novella!!
I would definitely purchase an ebook of your writing articles. Interested in all of them including the business related ones. 🙂
I would be happy to have the writing posts in one ebook. Of course I’d pay for that.
I was one of the recent searchers, so yes, very interested in the writing articles! =) And absolutely willing to pay $3-4 for the wisdom.
Def interested in learning world building – truly any aspects
ooooh yes please for the how-to book. pacing , world building, chase scene, story structure, folding time… please please please.. and also more HL and more Kate and Curran and more Dena and more of everything…. please!!! pretty please!!! more for the BDH!!!
I would be interested in any and all of the writing how-to topics in ebook form! Especially story structure. Thank you for showering us with awesome, HA! I’m so stoked for Augustine & Diana.
+1 book on writing! and yay, Augustine and Diana! (and Kitty!)
Yay! Augustine’s and Diana’s story is coming so much sooner than I thought.
+1 to publishing your writing articles. I’d be especially interested in world building articles and stories of how you crafted your current series’ worlds and magic system. And any insights that you have on writing trilogies and longer book series (like Kate Daniels).
I would be interested in purchasing an ebook! Many of the writing articles have stuck with me over time because your candid way of breaking down these broader topics really resonates, and it’d be incredible to have it all in one book!
My heart almost stopped when you did “push to summer” for release. Akkkkkk! January, January is the hope.
I would be very interested in not having to use the wayback machine to find the writing posts, yes. absolutely $5-$7 worth of interested
I like all the topics you mentioned PLUS I love the articles where you explain the publishing process and/or your experience with the publishing process, traditional vs self-pub etc. I also appreciate when you identify each of the players and what a good one should be doing for you: agent, copy editor, beta readers etc.
Why am I interested? The number of people who suggest I write a book is slowly increasing. Unfortunately my career and real life are getting in the way. I do still think of my stories fairly often but they are not distracting me from career yet aka forcibly grabbing my attention until I put them down on a page. So my compromise to those who suggest I write is “maybe as my semi-retirement gig or as a hobby”, maybe I self publish or maybe I just pay to get 15 copies printed and hand them to friends & family. But I digress, I’d rather learn/bookmark tips and shared knowledge from one of favourite authors of all time (held my attention through HS, college, young adult hood and 30s) than to only take notes from “Self Publishing for Dummies or Writing for Dummies”. Eventually I’ll take a few creative writing courses and do my own research but I’d love to combine that with IA/HA’s first-hand knowledge.
+1 to first paragraph.
I found your writing articles very helpful and would buy them as ebook.
I would buy the ebook on how to write. As to what topics — anything you want to share!
I’d love the how to in an e-book format
I’d love the reference book. I talk about you and misquote something you said about how great authors are really great revisers to my students every semester.
Grocery lists and sticky notes aside, I would definitely enjoy paying for an ebook from your “How To” blog posts.
Most of the Book Devouring Horde (BDH) — um, not hoard as in a pile of valuables, though, perhaps, we are? — listed here seems to want the “House Andrews Writes: The blog post guide to our success” cobbled together into an ebook of some sort.
My caveat would be:
Upsell it! Add your favorite recipes and charge for a “Author Tips and BDH Favorite Recipes” book (per previous BDH comments).
My cousin’s husband recently wrote a cookbook that sells for $59.99 a pop!
(Yes, it is printed in color. Yes, it includes photos. Yes, it’s more like a coffee table book. Yes, it is a hardcover. Yes, it has 330 pages… but, it’s not a writing guide! And, it’s not written by my favorite author!)
I’d pay $5 to $9.99 for your insights and recipes in ebook format… more for a print-on-demand, obviously.
Mmm… Apple Cake, or Mango Salsa? Hm.
Cheers!
I remember that you used Red Riding Hood (I think) as an example in one of the “how to” articles and I really wanted that book! Just from those few scenes. Magic.
I would definitely buy the reference book!
Thank you for putting together this list.
I have a lot of books about writing (that I’ve bought over the years, not that I wrote), majored in English in college and have dual minors in creative writing and history from a state university that has center of excellence for writing and even got one of their scholarships for it while attending.
I say this not to toot my own horn but to give my opinion context. It’s not like I went into the field with same degree, besides writing too-long comments on blogs.
I’ve been through the classes, and they were good ones. So is your writing advice. Your storytelling is solid, worlds relatable (especially important since they’re also fantastical), and have improved over time.
You clearly tell us not everyone is the same, and these are simply the things you’ve learned and have worked for you. Your insights show through. I’d buy a writing book from you even if I still never write again in my life. Even just being an avid reader, the writing “behind-the-scenes” give us more depth, understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation.
So, please keep it coming. And publish the damn book. 🙂
I would absolutely buy the writing compilation if it was available.
When my husband was 16 he was so inspired by David Eddings he wrote a novel, and still (proudly) has his rejection letter from a publisher.
Life caught him up, and though he had two original musicals being performed in Austin Texas this Holiday season, he hasn’t tackled a novel since.
He is a new horde member, just working his way through Kate and the gang, and loves HA’s writing style.
I would buy two copies on preorder.
Writing craft book, yes, please. I first found this site from the alphahole article and have enjoyed every single craft post.
I’m interested in your book of writing lessons!
Thak you. I am so interested in the ‘how to’ write. I would be happy to pay. But I get that it needs to be worth the bother.
I love the idea of a writer/writing ebook, and I would have zero angst about paying for it, even tho you are not pro teachers. I would want any topics regarding fantasy world stuff, and generally applicable stuff like diff between show/tell, pacing, how much description & where. I know how busy you are, so I appreciate that you’re even considering this.
I would love a writing tips book. How you outline a book would be fantastic
I’ve been reading all the blog posts on writing and would for sure buy any craft book you write (on top
Of just buying any book you write, I’m pretty sure I have the all by now)
I will buy anything you write, nonfiction included. I’ve spent more than I want to admit on writing guides from writers I like a lot less. I would certainly love a compilation of your writing advice. I am one of the people who failed to bookmark the advice posts and has spent time searching the archives for your advice. If you and J.F. team up, you could probably do a mass market advice book in your sleep. But even just a basic epub of old posts will have a home on my ereader. Sidenote: thank you for the unexpected gift of a novella while we wait for Maggie.
I would definitely buy and read the reference book.
I read the excerpt in which Diana says Matilda is a 9 year old child. But Matilda’s age was given as 10 in Ruby Fire. Does this novella happen before Ruby Fire or was this something I only noticed because I’m a psycho who has read these books too many times?
Either way, I’m excited since I just finished my 10th or so Hidden Legacy re-read and wanting more
The novella happens about 4 months before the body of Ruby Fever, yes. Matilda has a birthday in between 🙂
+1 for buying and reading the reference book. As others said, it has also helped me be a better reader!
Yes please to the ebook!!
Yes, I would happily buy an ebook on your writing tips. You may not consider yourself a teacher, but I’ve taken several writing classes and none of them were as helpful to me as that one article showing the value of editing that you wrote.
I am rereading the series (because I love it and because I’m excited for the Augustine book) and I am trying to get a better handle on how the magic is classified. I found the “World of Hidden Legacy” page that explained that there are three broad types (arcane, elemental and mental), but I wasn’t sure how some of the classifications from the book fit in with them (e.g. Sagittarius, Anti-stasi, Exemplaria, illusionist, siren, metamorph, plant mages, shield mages, oracle, etc.). Also, what is an Enerkinesis? If magic levels are equal but the classifications different, are some weaker/stronger depending on the type (I just remember that Nevada found it more difficult to use her magic against the summoner because they both had will-based magic).
Thank you for writing some of my favourite series! I love exploring the worlds you craft.
I also want to add that I have thoroughly enjoyed the GA dramatizations of Kate Daniels and Hidden Legacy. I normally avoid audiobooks, but the way you write really does make “a movie in your head”. It forced me to slow down an absorb each word, especially during the action scenes where I tend to read really fast because I get tense (even when I know what is a out to happen).
Anyways, it sounds like Catalina’s books may get a GA rendition– so fingers crossed.
I also love your collaborators with arcane society. I sadly missed the Hugh and Julie books, but I got the box set of Hidden Legacy (1-3).
Catalina’s books are definitely getting the GA treatment! 🥰
As for the magic, there will be a recap at the beginning of Beast Business, Augustine’s novella which comes out next week – to refresh and hopefully clarify.
In general, it’s easier if you think of it as…well, magic. Sometimes it will just be a whatthefuckery, to quote Bug. Some powers are just “arcane” and no one can really categorise them. Antistasi for example. Only a handful of people have it in the world and it just does things ™.
The idea is that magic is interested in protecting and keeping its user alive. And it does that in really weird and seemingly chaotic ways, because magic operates by its own rules that don’t match human ideas of reasonable or understandable.
Thank you! I really appreciate this community you guys have built. It really helps me deal with the magical world withdrawals when I finish rereading the series too quickly.
*hugs*
I would love the how-to-write articles
I would like something on this. I like to think I have a book in me and one day when i retire I will sit and write.
Topics like: how to fold time, how to write a chase scene, difference between show don’t tell and passive voice, basic story structure, would be excellent.
Ross
I too would pay for a reference book.
First of all, yes, please bundle your articles on writing! You bring the daily/weekly/monthly/yearly process to life. I especially appreciate the blogs that remind that writers — even the exceptional ones that turn into wildly exceptional authors who keep readers coming back — are human beings who have real lives. Those life experiences show up in the books, helping make characters seem so real it is hard to return to our own daily lives. Instruction in “how to teach” is highly over-rated. You do great at explaining processes, background, and so much more. So looking forward to the release of “Beast Business.” It will be fun to revisit Zeus and friends. Trying so much to be patient waiting for Maggie. Your books are definitely worth waiting for. Take care of your health. Take whatever time you need. You write it, the BDH will read it.
I’d be interested in buying the writing articles.
Catching up on all the blogs – I am so behind – and please please publish all the how-to-writing articles. I would happily pay for them.
I’d pay for the book. The insights you provide are fascinating. I have shared your posts with writer friends to help them.
As for topics, we’re the BDH. All the things.
Do you say em-eye-eye or em-two?
M- ontgomery I -nternational I- nvestigations.
There is no 2 🙂, it’s an abbreviation.
Thank you so much. Just finished beast business and I really really can’t wait for more.
